Approximately 3.2 million cats enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year, of which about 1.6 million are adopted. By adopting, people are providing these majestic animals with the second chance they deserve. After all, many of them have been rescued from terrible circumstances such as cruelty, neglect, and abandonment, or their owners were simply no longer able to look after them.

One of the places that celebrate pets finding their new homes is the subreddit r/BeforeNAfterAdoption. There, owners share their heartwarming stories, often providing pictures of their new family members as well. Taken before and after their adoption, these images accentuate the amazing difference a loving family can make for an abandoned or mistreated animal.

Here are some of the cats featured on the subreddit.

Experts estimate that about 35% of all households in the United States have a cat. So my question to the rest of you is this: what are you waiting for? I'm joking, of course. Bringing home an animal is a big responsibility (which comes with many rewards), and should not be something you rush into. If you are unsure whether or not you are ready to make this move, check out this cat adoption checklist by American Humane and this cat care guide by ASPCA. They should give you the information you need to make up your mind.

I wish more could be done to prevent healthy (*edit*) and unhealthy animals from unnecessarily being put down. All animals deserve the right to live and love somebody they can trust, whether human or animal. Thank you for giving him a chance!

The best thing you can do is adopt and support trap-neuter-return programs. :) Find a local shelter and send them some money every month, a little goes a long way.

I did the same thing. Took what I thought was a 3 mon old, Mange covered kitten to the shelter for help bc she was so sweet while I was feeding her. They didn't have fosters to rehab her so wanted to put her down. Took a chance & quarantined her on my outside patio. She never ran away. Shelter gave her treatment & sent me home with carrier & kitten food at no charge. Turns out she was 6mon old, neglected & malnourished. 2 years later still the sweetest furball ever but couldn't have done it without the help from the Shelter, and Aquaphor. Who knew Aquaphor helped heal scarring on animals?

In the meantime, check out other posts Bored Panda has done on the topic: in the past, we published before-and-after adoption photos of not only cats, but also dogs, and pretty much any pet that can end up in a shelter.

Let's end things off with a quote from Matthew Bershadker, ASPCA President and CEO, that really puts things into perspective: "Helping vulnerable animals and keeping pets in safe and loving homes requires a commitment from all of us—advocates, pet owners, shelters, leaders, and entire communities. When we work together under a common cause, we're both saving lives and elevating our society and its laws to ensure cruelty victims and other at-risk animals receive the protection and care they deserve."

How could the person in charge of the deceased person’s estate just leave the cat in the house? Thus isn’t something new, btw. A friend of mine rescued a purebred schnauzer puppy from a cage with no food or water in an empty house for sale. Fritz lived a long and happy life with my friend. He loved all people, all animals (his best friend was a cat), and beachcombing (I’d find a shell, he’d sniff it, and go find a shell of his own). He died in his sleep, a very content and happy little old man.

No pet should be left behind. If you love them, and they are part of your family, you need to make arrangements for their care, in anticipation of anything happening to you. But, as one person wrote, some people can't be bothered.

I fostered an FIV+ cat for a couple years because nobody wanted him. He is the best cat I’ve had, his memory is with me for life. I really truly loved him. He died in 2015 and idk if I’ll ever really “get over it.” I miss him. FIV isn’t contagious to humans and it doesn’t mean they’re walking around on the edge of death. Just that you might not get many years with them..

it stands for feline immuntodeficiency virus, it causes the cat to have an immune system that attacks itself, making the cat much more vulnerable to dieseases. cats without fiv can catch it from cats with fiv, so they should never be housed together.

My hubby and I only adopt FIV cats. We've two little terrors atm. We take them because very few others will. One of our previous lads was in the shelter for almost 4 years. He got 5 with us. Treated like the little Prince he was. Although it's hard to lose them sooner than a healthy cat, we take solace in the fact that the short time they have with us is filled with love and toys and the best food we can spoil them with.

2 Years Ago Today I Walked Into A Petsmart And Met A Cat Named Sonny

No one would adopt because he was 13 years old, covered in fleas, underweight, and had a mouth full of rotten teeth that had to be removed. He came home with me that night and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

I had a cat "Houdini" that I took from a PetSmart. He was a huge tiger tabby, 10 years old, blind in one eye and missing a fang. I saw him hiding in his litter box. And older man had him and he passed. A young girl adopted him and they did well but she lost her apartment and went to live with her mother who hated cats. Kicked him, locked him in the basement, and back to the shelter he went. I took him and he hid under my bed for like two months. I had to feed him under the bed and keep a cat box in my room that he would use when no one was around. He migrated to under my dresser because as it got colder, the heater duct was there. He would spit at you if you went near him and even as I tried to feed him. He never lashed out though. One night I was sitting on the floor watching TV and all of a sudden... this big lug comes running out from under the dresser and right into my lap! After 3 months! Had him for another 7 years. My granddaughter called him "Dino." She couldn't say "Houdini."

Possible if she has some Siamese in her, or one of the breeds derived from them. They are born cream colored and gradually get their points as they get older. And given she has blue eyes, highly likely. If you look closely at the kitten picture you can see the shadows of where her points came in.

Why would anyone euthanize a newborn kitten, when kittens are so much easier to adopt out than older cats? Hope the mama cat was fixed (and not euthanized too) and adopted out after this one’s birth.

Kittens are more difficult to care for with the bottle/syringe feedings every four hours and whatnot, and some county shelters don't have those resources.

I rescued my calico three years ago from daily temperatures of -30 degrees celcius ( -22 degrees fahrenheit). I think that she ran away from home. I fed her twice a day, built her a shelter and filled it with cushions and blankets, expecting her owner to come around and inquire about her. When no one came after a week of frigid temperatures, I let her into my house for temporary refuge. She never left. And, I made a promise to take of her for the rest of her life.

While I am fully aware that some people are just that cruel to animals, I cannot understand why would someone just throw away an expensive pedigreed cat, which one in four of those in the post are.

Or a tiny kitten who shouldn’t even be away from its mother! Our youngest was dumped, all alone, in our yard. She was 5 to 6 weeks old, weighed less than a ound, and completely terrified. Now she’s 7 months, 7 pounds, fearless p, bright-eyed, and full of energy.
