There was a time when I was so inspired by my grandmother’s knitting that I decided to give it a shot and follow in her footsteps. I was going to become a crochet grandmaster and I’d never have to buy a scarf or a pair of socks ever again! After all, I’d make the coolest patterns this side of the Atlantic and everyone would be super jealous. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that I quickly gave up my lofty aspirations when I realized just how bad at everything I really was. And, sadly, I wasn’t willing to put in the time and effort to get better.
However, what stayed with me is my admiration for anyone who can crochet, knit, or sew something incredibly well. It’s not just the aesthetics but also the dedication to the craft that wins over my heart. Luckily for me (and for quite a few of you Pandas), there’s a lot of support online for anyone interested in learning how to make stunning designs. One of these online communities is r/crochet, a subreddit that’s home to nearly 257k people who love the art of crochet.

It's beautiful & in a way, reminds me of the "crazy quilt" designs from the late 1800's (I THINK that's the era but it might have been during the Great Depression when Crazy Quilts became popular). It's a stunning piece of work, IMHO.

This is masterful. I mean I know how to crochet a granny square and have made things, but dayummm!! The eye for color, the meticulous shading, it's a wonderful thing and should be higher than that damn bunny at the top.

1=Hang it 2=Use bright lights like spots 3=move the lights until you get the look you want. BTW, it is really pretty even without those steps, that's just the way I've seen them displayed in museums & shows.

The moderator from r/crochet shared with Bored Panda that the story of how the subreddit was founded is actually shrouded in mystery. "No one currently on the moderation team knows how the sub began in 2008," they said.
I was curious to learn about the link between crochet, knitting, and sewing, as well as just how beginner-friendly the former really is, overall. "Crochet is definitely the most beginner-friendly between crochet, knitting, and sewing. This is because, in part, it’s the easiest to rip apart (called frogging) and go back to fix a mistake," the moderator told Bored Panda that one of the biggest upsides of crochet is the ability to start over if you feel like you've messed up a tad.
It's not without its challenges, however. "Most beginners often find difficulty in knowing where to place the hook in each stitch and figuring out how to coordinate holding the yarn, hook, and work all at the same time!"

As for how similar crochet, knitting, and sewing are, the mod noted that there's some crossover with knitting. "They’re both yarn crafts that create fabric. Other similarities include knowing how to count stitches and read written patterns. There is no real crossover with sewing, except perhaps that advanced sewers may have an advantage in understanding how garments drape and fit," they were kind enough to explain to me.
Though you'll have to put in the time and effort to get good at crochet, it's actually a very easy activity to pick up and be on your merry way into the land of yarn. "Learning to crochet, like everything else, has a learning curve! Luckily, it’s pretty easy to get started—all you really need is a hook and a skein of yarn," the mod said.
Like with most things, the internet holds a wealth of information that's useful for anyone just starting out. "Most people find it easiest to learn from YouTube videos, and they are a fantastic resource for learning new stitches and patterns. There are also some wonderful books out there that can teach every conceivable stitch—you want to look for something called a 'crochet stitch dictionary' or similar. My mom crochetes all day long. Donated 36 blankets in the spring to children in care/foster/hospitals. She sorta follows patrerns where I look at what she's made an can do them that way. Also we are left handed and books are for right handed people. But micheals delivers yarn so I stock her up an help pull colors for about two projects ahead when she finishes one. Also any new baby's get one. 100% acrylic so they are hypoallergenic and machine washable too.
Y’all should sell some of this stuff on Etsy or something cause it’s amazing and I know people would love it!

The only thing I've been able to successfully crochet are jellyfish. They're actually quite easy (and fun!) to make and there's tons of free patterns and tutorials for them online. Might be a good place to start. Teaches you to crochet in the round, which you'd need to crochet a Rilakkuma bear.

Was in hospital often due to childhood polio, so learned to knit in my early teens, mostly outfits for my dolls. Mum used to knit our school cardigans, so later as an adult, I started knitting them as well, instead of buying them. Also knitted umpteen tops. Then I learned to crochet, so more tops appeared, also waistcoats, love them. At 79, I'm busy on a new jersey, also knitting somebody some bedsocks, it's winter here.
My Mom would crochet blankets for all her friend's babies. Those blankets always ended up being the "blankie" the kids would drag around for years. I think they could sense the love that blended into every knot.
I'm impressed by all of these... and simultaneously feel like poop that all my crochet'd stuffs look... well... awful in comparison...

I'm a crochet fanatic II am a member of a few online groups. It used to be a bunch of online groups but I got REALLY tired of people creating something absolutely incredible and saying, "I'm just a beginner," or "I've only crocheted for 3 weeks" or "Isn't this horrible, it's so imperfect?" or "My (gift recipient) didn't even like it" or "It took me nearly 3 hours to complete". There seems to be a whole lot of attention seeking and bullshit in some of these communities and I saw it a bit in this post. Lots of beautiful work, but no, you didn't create a masterpiece on your second try, or in 2 hours.

I've always wanted to learn how to crochet, I've tried YouTube videos, but I can't find one that goes slow enough for me to actually see wth they're doing and HOW they're doing it. I have 4 sons, and I've always dreamed about making them all blankets to pass down. Was in hospital often due to childhood polio, so learned to knit in my early teens, mostly outfits for my dolls. Mum used to knit our school cardigans, so later as an adult, I started knitting them as well, instead of buying them. Also knitted umpteen tops. Then I learned to crochet, so more tops appeared, also waistcoats, love them. At 79, I'm busy on a new jersey, also knitting somebody some bedsocks, it's winter here.
My Mom would crochet blankets for all her friend's babies. Those blankets always ended up being the "blankie" the kids would drag around for years. I think they could sense the love that blended into every knot.
I'm impressed by all of these... and simultaneously feel like poop that all my crochet'd stuffs look... well... awful in comparison...

I'm a crochet fanatic II am a member of a few online groups. It used to be a bunch of online groups but I got REALLY tired of people creating something absolutely incredible and saying, "I'm just a beginner," or "I've only crocheted for 3 weeks" or "Isn't this horrible, it's so imperfect?" or "My (gift recipient) didn't even like it" or "It took me nearly 3 hours to complete". There seems to be a whole lot of attention seeking and bullshit in some of these communities and I saw it a bit in this post. Lots of beautiful work, but no, you didn't create a masterpiece on your second try, or in 2 hours.
