These skills and knowledge are acquired by experience or are taught, but even if you need them, you don’t necessarily have them.

Idk if this is considered basic knowledge but it's really good to know:
If your car gets stuck in snow, take out the floor mats and stick them under your tires as best you can, in the direction you are wanting to go (so the tires can drive on them). This helps give you some traction. You can reuse this technique as far as needed, just parking, getting out, and moving the floor mats back to right in front/behind your tires.
It irks me when I watch TV shows where the characters get stuck and can't get out of the snow, when they clearly have floor mats in their car. It has come to my attention over the past couple years that a lot of people don't know this, so now I try and bring it up every time it remotely comes up in a convo.
Also, keep emergency supplies in your vehicle. Jumper cables, a flashlight and batteries (keep them stored separately because corrosion), food/water, gloves, winter boots if applicable where you are, etc. Also, look up the underwater car episode of Mythbusters, just good to know :)
EDIT: as u/ruetheblue says below, if the snow is covering the tailpipe TURN THE CAR OFF. (Carbon monoxide)
Better yet, if you live on a heavy Snow prone área, buy tire chains. ( Oh..... And be sure to know what are your car's drive wheels lol, i laugh my a*s off because some One got the chains in the rear wheels of a VW Golf. Which is a front wheel drive car )
There are some states in the US where chains are illegal. I live in Iowa and we get snow every winter but tire chains are illegal because they tear up the roads. I keep a large bag of kitty litter in my trunk in the event I get stuck and the floor mat trick doesn't work. The litter provides good traction and if I don't need it to get unstuck, then it gives me the extra weight in the back to keep my wheels in contact with road

I've done the carmat traction before. No matter how slow you go, it shoots the mat right out.
I've had it work only on more wet snow so the mat doesn't slide against the snow as easily. I suspect some mats are better than others, too, like the ones that have a bit of texture.
Load More Replies... Buy a rechargeable charging device for your car. They cost about $100, which I know is expensive, but being able to charge your own car when you are by yourself is a life saver.
Sometimes you can get out of a slippy spot on an icy and snowy road without putting anything under the tyres, but it's not the easiest. You need to go as slow as possible and if your tyres are in a hole, you can try to get a forwards-backwards swinging motion going. Also if you have regular snowy winters, investing in a separate set of winter tyres to use is a smart move. Just remember to switch to them _before_ the first snowstorm hits.
My husband, sitting next to me right now....was going to tell him this tidbit of info re the floor mats, but I can just hear his answer now..."oh yeah, didn't you know that?" There's NOTHING he does not know. Just ask him. haha

I have a pair of "snow socks" for my car, which I can use if I get stuck. I've not had cause to use them yet, but it gives me something to try before having to call for a tow. My car is not terribly happy in the snow, being rear wheel drive, and I have previously had it stuck in very minor conditions. Winter tyres might help, but we don't get snow very often.
If you live in an area where it is a possibility to get stranded in the snow, keep a pack of tea candles and matches in the car. A single tea candle can warm up a car so that you don't freeze to death.
Same goes for very hot weather. All the stuff listed is a good idea but add a few gallons of water. Do not EVER travel in a very hot region without water. If you don't need it your car will.

that's actually good to know. I live in Texas where we don't get a lot of snow so I actually don't know a lot about dealing with it. Most people here don't. That's why the whole state shuts down! But now that I know this if I ever need it I am set! The more ya know!!!!
Also, never floor the gas pedal, it will either sink your tires deeper in the snow or polish the ice and you lose traction. Gently rock the car back and forth and you'll go furter in both direction and eventually get out of the spot you're stuck in.

Also, if you don't want to sacrifice floor mats old roof shingles (check for nails obviously) are good to keep for that purpose, snow or ice.
If this works, I'm gonna be REALLY angry at myself for never having thought of trying it! Those mats grip into the floor below quite well!
We have a thick and tough blanket in the car, partly for this purpose. It's good for a lot of other things too; if you buy plants with soil on them, or if you are freezing.
