Common knowledge isn't that common. Sure, you can't know everything, and excelling in one area often means neglecting another, but things like first aid and the definition (and use) of free speech should be universally understood. At least, in the perfect world — it's in everyone's best interest.

But, again, they're not. So when Reddit user CasualBeers made a post on the platform, asking its users to share basic facts that they've noticed a surprisingly large number of people don't know, folks immediately started listing their suggestions. Here are some of the most popular ones.

35 People Who Noticed An Alarming Number Of Individuals Not Knowing Basic Facts Share What They Were that freedom of speech doesn't mean you can say whatever you want without consequences or other people giving you s**t about it. it just means you can't go to jail for criticizing the government.

(1) Besides the gov't Not being able to censor what citizens say (with a few exceptions), Freedom of Speech also means the gov't can not compel citizens to say something (like the Pledge of Allegiance in the US).

True freedom does not include freedom from consequences. Unfortunately, we see all the time that this rule does not apply equally.

Also, that explanation is not justification. As a teacher, I have a massive number of students who think that having an explanation for not meeting a deadline or getting a failing grade they are entitled to extensions or extra credits. The worst is when those excuses are on the tone of "I did not have time" or "I made a really big effort, can you pass me please?" Dude, I hate to break it to you, but that's just not how the world works. Still, many adults think like that too...

35 People Who Noticed An Alarming Number Of Individuals Not Knowing Basic Facts Share What They Were How vaccines work. If they “make you sick,” it’s because they’re working! Your body is mounting a defense and creating antibodies to help fight off infection. A lot of really smart scientists have devoted their entire lives to keep us safe against life-threatening infection and people who have no medical training refuse them. It seems pretty idiotic and cavalier to me

"I have to say that pandemic has plummeted my judgement of human, and it wasn't high to begin with." .....omg dude, same!! The pandemic was a real eye opener. I never would've guessed in a million years that in 2020 there could be (a surprising amount of) people calling a worldwide, deadly pandemic "fake." Flat out refusing to wear a mask. And turning the whole thing political. At least I got to make it to my mid 30s, before losing all faith in humanity. My kids are in their late teens, and they already have seen enough to lose all faith.

I told him by that logic, I shouldn't use the ice from my fridge since it was Artificial. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Pretty interesting that in its natural form, sugar, I'm perfectly fine and can consume copious amounts with no issue (ignoring health issues that can arise from high sugar consumption) but once it's processed and chlorinated then I react to it. Sure it's derived from sugar, which is natural, but it's chemically altered in such a way that it's completely different and causes me a serious health issue

My mother-in-law would annoy when she was driving because she would need to get into another lane during busy traffic hours, and complain that nobody is letting her in, and we'd have to tell her "Maybe if you turned on your signal, they'll understand your intent to change lanes." Also, she would merge into the lane and turn her signal on .. I guess to let people know that she intended to change lanes that time?

I have a friend who used to let her turn signal blink ONCE before she'd merge/change lanes, claiming it was "plenty" for the person in the next lane to see it. No amount of "What if they're looking in their rear-view mirror, or distracted changing the radio station?" could convince her otherwise. I'm not sure what changed her mind, but thankfully she no longer has this belief.

So nowadays there's no excuse but when I first learnt about reproductive anatomy the room was split in half. Girls went to one room to learn about female anatomy, boys went to the other room to learn about male anatomy. This is why so many men don't get taught it. For them there are only 2 holes. Also I know quite a few kids pulled out of the class all together for religious reasons.

I wonder if changing the name would make a difference for some people? We learnt it as puberty education and boys and girls were taught together, at 11 or 12 years old (though this wasn't mandatory). Then we had a similar section for all students at 13-14 years old. It wasn't until 15-16 years old it was called 'sex ed' and that was more about more in depth lessons on contraception and STDs.

Oooooh several years ago at a zoo in the USA (sorry I can’t remember where, I’ll Google) a woman let her child sneak into a restricted area where there were several members of an endangered wolf family and. Child got hurt. Wolves were put down. Still makes my blood boil to think about. Edit: I can’t find it because everything is about current efforts to destroy the wolf population. Why do humans suck so much.

I live in bear country and someone came up here to do some hiking, saw a bear and decided to get a selfie with it. Last one he ever took. Last pic on his camera was of the bear charging him. Respect wildlife, people. Getting mauled to death is a horrible way to die and it's not worth risking it for attention from internet strangers.

I’ve walked up fairly close to a number of wild animals, but they were almost all in areas that have a lot of human traffic. Think birds, squirrels, etc. I did get rather close to some does once, about 20 feet. I didn’t notice them until I was already pretty close, they’re like ninjas. We just stood and looked at each other for a minute or so and then I went back to walking and they went back to grazing. The owner of a nearby plant nursery told me that a lot of the deer knew they were in a safe area and had gotten used to people somewhat. Would I do that if I was far from where other people live, hell no. I’m pink and squishy and not very large and a lot of animals are none of those things and being beaten to death by a deer just isn’t on my top ways to die list.

Last week I had to say “excuse me” like 7 times in the same aisle in the SAME TINY SECTION just to grab a few different kinds of pasta and canned stuff because a mom and dad and aunt and uncle and niece and nephew and grandma and grandpa and 3 kids and 2 teenagers had all decided to go shopping together with one cart & then stop and talk to mom’s friend for 10 mins - there’s not enough room in the aisle for that 😅 I don’t want downvotes for his but I wish people would leave their families at home when reasonable (except for kids who are too young to be left alone or when the shopper needs a family member’s help (or if you can get babysitting but even then, those who can afford babysitting doing it would save a lot of traffic for those who can’t lol) but the whole crew does not need to come, when every family does it it gets really hard to shop!) (I understand there are reasons but I also know a lot of people do it needlessly because my mum used to ask for help with the bags but insist that myself and all 5 of my siblings came along when we only needed 1 or 2 🙃)

If the cart's not "manned" I push it aside, otherwise it's a loud "excuse me". And I've got nothing against elderly people but they do have the tendency of blocking the whole aisle while telling each other their latest hospital trip/grandkids news/aches and pains.... and giving you a very dirty look when you "interrupt" their conversation because you want to get through or take something off the shelf they happen to be standing in front of.

It would be even easier if the aisles didn't have a bunch of freestanding stands of whatever they're trying to push that week. I have to zig-zag just to navigate around them. They're just as bad as people just standing there with their carts.

It's because people are careless and are too much focused on their own issues, daily life, or whatever and they are mostly not attentive - which under any circumstance is not okay - and if by any chance I glance into the void and do the same, I can not appologise enough if they draw my attention, because it is fair enough, I think, to be reminded and snapped out of my thoughts. But usually people don't apologise, they are even rather irritated that you let them know they are not attentive.

Yes! Not only can it be dangerous but you can also set back their training, people should not allow others to pet their dog if they aren't trained either even if your dog loves people and wants to go up to people and get petted - make sure your dog is trained to behave and listens to your command before you allow especially strangers to touch or talk to your dog.

At one point I was putting a fluorescent yellow "Do not pet" vest on my dog when we were out on a walk, and *numerous* people would still try to pet her without asking. But if someone gets bitten, it's the dog and the owner's fault.

And don't insist you are great with dogs when the dog is deaf and the owner objects no matter how cute the dog is. You could get bitten easily. If it is wearing a deaf dog sign that means don't pet it. Or talk to it like it understands you. They can't read lips or body language. But they may know basic sign language. Our girl used to jump up and snap in the air in front of adults to make them back off. Now she knows being petted is a good thing and isn't afraid. It took a lot of training to get her there.

A child most likely won’t have the same awareness, coordination, or strength as an adult might have to grab something in that moment. So what do you do? Try to scoop them with something? I’m grateful we’ve never been in this situation.

Not true. I'm a rescue instructor. More often than not the person will not have the strength to fight you or maybe even use a floatation device. The standard advice is to approach from the back, if they attempt to grab you then you just swim under the water. A drowning person doesn't want to go down, you as the rescuer are not bothered about being underwater. Just keep going down till they let go. They are not controlling their breath and are exhausted, they will last 30 secs maximum. Grabbing someone when drowning is a completely normal and understandable reaction, it's upto you as a rescuer to control the situation. If you do not feel proficient then you should not attempt any type of rescue or you will make it worse. That should have been the moral here not just don't bother helping or you will die.

If absolutely necessary to save a life and you're already in the water, approach from behind, and "hug" them with one hand, resting their head on your upper arm, with the same arm incapacitate their flailing arm that is closer to your body so they don't hit you or fail your attempts to swim to safety

Same goes for every form of transportation, as well as for any kind of doors that connect "in" with "out", may it be a building, a store, a classroom or whatever. It's not just about manners, but logic too .

With respect to trains, that is due to design and budget constraints lingering from an earlier era. Witness how Disney World engineered their monorail system… when the train pulls into their central transportation center, passengers exit on one side, then the doors close. Then the doors on the opposite side open to welcome new riders. There are two platforms, not one.

I think the idea is that gay men do stuff in the butt therefore if that feels good to them that means they like butt stuff, which means they are gay. It's still stupid but it's the only "logic" I can see.

Easy solution is to just say "not gay" out loud before you do anything. Then it's automatically not gay. I saw it on the internet, so it must be true.

So many people don’t seem to understand grey area or nuance. I see it a lot with politics and opinions. I learned early on growing up with my siblings that sometimes you can both be kinda right or wrong and that just because someone did something hurtful doesn’t necessarily mean it was their intent to hurt, but so many people are so quick to vilify others for deeds or opinions (obviously this isn’t counting objectively wrong stuff like most crime or bigotry)

    Catherine Graffham

But even then, there can be redemption or a change of mind, so someone who did a crime can be redeemed and shouldn’t be vilified for the rest of their life (I know some crimes are less redeemable than others, but I mean the more redeemable ones), or someone who had a previously closed minded or bigoted viewpoint can change, and dragging it up or refusing to accept the change only tends to cause them to stubbornly hold onto the old beliefs or go back to the communities that led to those beliefs. Edit: corrected spelling

This is why I'm a retired social justice warrior. In sociology I learned that gender is a social construct, and in evolutionary biology I learned that gender is innate in our DNA through evolution. It's both, like nature/nurture, and it's generalized. I'm too tired for revolution, and, to quote Billy Joel, "I found that just surviving was a noble fight." If I spend all my time worrying about all the wrongs in the world, it's ultimately a waste of time. I spend my time instead taking care of my meaningful relationships, bettering myself, and helping when I have the power and ability to do so. If I don't have the power, not the ability (time, resources, etc.), to help right the wrongs, I let that weight go

If you have to fill some documents in a hospital, where you're asked about your sēx - write down the actual sēx. --- That one which you were born with. You're born female, but your gender is male? > Write down female even/especially when you're on hormones already and look male. (Same procedure the other way around) --- e.g.: A male won't get uterial cancer, just like a female won't get prostata cancer.

This is true, generally. But someone born looking female, could actually have a prostate. Some bodies don't respond to testosterone... at all... The person may not even be aware. At some point medicine needs to be aware that people may not know what's going on inside of them and just do ALL the tests. Making assumptions is how some people end up living impaired

This would depend at what stage on her period she was. For example the fertilised egg will not implant onto a wall which is breaking down, nor will expired egg fertilise. The probability is exceptionally low, so many environmental factors have to align at the same time that the odds drop off. The main things that must happen to allow this are, the vagina must have finished breaking down the old lining and be actively seeding the next, the egg must have been released already and be inbound to meet the sperm, the antibodies designed to keep out infection must be calm or they will kill the sperms long before it gets near an egg, the woman's hormones must have changed or implantation would not be possible. This sounds like a stretch, so much so that you would say it to a 10 year old to scare them off sex.

And can get pregnant on the pill/depo shot. I got pregnant on both while using them correctly! After my third child my mom made an off-hand comment that my half sister was conceived while she was on the pill...i then learned that it can be genetic for hormonal birth control to fail! Ask your mom, ladies. If she got pregnant while using birth control correctly you are more likely for it to fail for you as well. (By correctly i mean taking the pill every day at the same time, not randomly, and having the depo shots overlapped)

You can eat chicken raw. Torisashi (essentially chicken sashimi) is a delicacy in Japan. I’m not saying all freshly killed chicken is safe to eat, bc there are guidelines on what is safe or not safe, and which part to eat, but just pointing out that when the right practices are followed, chicken can be eaten uncooked.

And it is delicious. Futher more, temp is more important than colour. You can have slight pink chicken if the internal temp is high enough. You can have overcooked chicken or in some cases under temp chicken even if it is white.

This definitely needs a caveat: I understand that a very few places (Japan, I think?) will serve rare chicken but it is incredibly strictly handled. Bird to table in less than 30 minuted, all surfaces and utensils sterilized between birds, etc.

Scientific theory, definition: explanation of an aspect of the natural world and universe that has been repeatedly tested and corroborated in accordance with the scientific method, using accepted protocols of observation, measurement, and evaluation of results. Where possible, theories are tested under controlled conditions in an experiment. In circumstances not amenable to experimental testing, theories are evaluated through principles of abductive reasoning. Established scientific theories have withstood rigorous scrutiny and embody scientific knowledge.

People saying the don't believe science, but believe in religion. Religion is also called faith, you either believe or not, you can choose which part do you believe, reject another one and it still will make sense - at least to you. Science is based on data and facts, they are either right or wrong. You cannot choose to ignore or reject one part just to make sense for the whole. It will fall apart. Do not mix up the completely different approach to perception.

There's nothing wrong with faith. There's nothing wrong with reading the Bible/Koran, etc. and recognizing their contents as stories and possible lessons on how to behave as a human being. Problems start occurring when you try to force your faith on others who are not being responsive to your efforts and BIG problems occur when you interpret everything in holy books as literal evidence of how you think the world and your fellow man should be, without question. No good comes from attitudes such these and frequently, more harm is inflicted because of those attitudes.

Another issue is that some religious doctrines (as in... almost all of them... except those adopted from lenient representations of said religion) DICTATE that you must either force your beliefs on others, or must AT LEAST strongly insist to people that *insert literally any religious text* is the one true word of God.

And neither is America. Some people use it as short hand for the United States but there’s two American continents and a vast array of countries, cultures and dialects. It’s silly enough to generalise a country as big and variable as the US, but to generalise a whole continent (or two, but in my experience when someone says America, they either mean US or North America) is just ridiculous. I’m not even from anywhere in North or South America, but I always cringe when people say something like ‘Americans do xyz’ as if the entire country or continent is a monoculture

In general usage, America is always taken to mean the United States of America. It's not that often that we need to say USA and Canada together, but that would be North America, and as there are only two countries, it's as easy to name them as to name the continent. The rest we refer to as Central America and South America if we aren't referring to a single country. If we need to refer to both continents, that would be The Americas.

One, the youngest one, follows them in their politic ideas. Their oldest one went to "the other side, but we still respect him and he can make his own choices..." Regular soap is not antibacterial (does not kill bacteria). Bacteria can live on soap. But soap and water is excellent at mechanically washing away bacteria.

As I understand it, no amount of soap will kill bacteria, but soap reduces surface tension of water, effectively making it wetter and better at scooping up bacteria and allowing you to rinse it down the drain. The key is to rub your soap hands together for 30 seconds to sweep most of the bacteria up, then rinse. Properly washing your hands is much better than using antibacterial soap because the bacteria can't evolve to withstand it the same way bacteria evolves to withstand antibiotics and antibacterial soaps and such. Also, antibacterial things and antibiotics do diddly against a virus, but proper handwashing is effective at removing viruses from hands as well.

Most bacteria have a lipid cell wall. Soap molecules adhere to water on one end, and to lipids on the other. With rubbing and sufficient time, the bacteria are removed, and the cell walls destroyed as well, thus killing the bacteria.

I make soap from all natural products. I deliberately crafted my recipe to make an extra foamy soap. Fun fact: Soap DOES NOT need to be foamy to clean your skin. But in our minds, it does make it better.

No, but rubbing creates friction necessary to destroy bacterial and viral outer coating as well as lifting diet and oil from the skin to rinse away. Sudsing is just a visual metaphor for it.

I have it on very good authority that ponys are any cartoon style horse, unicorn or pegasus, think my little pony. If it looks like a real life horse it's a horse or maybe a baby horse. Narwhales are pony whales since they have horns like ponys. This is based on my four year old nieces extensive knowledge on the subject.

I worked on a horse farm a summer when I was 16. It was awesome! I learned very quickly that the Shetland pony was 100% attitude my first day. I had my back to her feeding another horse and she decided she wanted my attention so the little s**t bit my left buttcheek! Left one heck of a bruise too! She also stepped on my feet more times than I can count also. I'd much rather care for draft horses. They were gentle giants.

This area is such a minefield these days. One thing I've never got a comprehensive answer to - perhaps pandas can help here - is when someone "identifies as" something else, what does that actually mean, and in doing so, are they stereotyping? As a simple (yet highly complex) example, if a biological male identifies as a female, what actually are they identifying *as*? What are they, that they were not before? How do they think or feel different? I'd really like to know, because as an older person from a simpler age, I am struggling to understand what this all means to people, and I would genuinely like to know.

Good questions all. I've searched for and found a few descriptions by mtf trans people of their transition, written by very intelligent and articulate people. They focused on appearances - clothes, hair, make-up. They were concerned to meet their own expectations of how they should look as a woman and they seemed to sort of dote on their appearance in a way that most women don't. Then when they started hormone treatment they were amazed at how different it made them feel. Overall, the descriptions I read were more of a wanting to be something they coveted (and to look like that thing) rather than a description of someone being that thing already and wanting to look the way they felt. I'm sure there are all variations of experience. These were just the ones I read.

Simplified: biological sex = biological parts (including intersex), gender = your inner understanding of yourself in relation to your sex, sexuality/sexual orientation = which biological parts on others you feel the urge to interact with (including the option of none). And none of these things are capable of being chosen. You're born with them. Also gender is the only one that can appear to be fluid or "changeable" from an outsiders perspective - because your understanding of your inner self can and does change over time. (Or it SHOULD if you are a healthily self-aware individual.) Not only in matters of gender, but in all things that make up your Self.

I don't see why this truth is difficult to understand? Gender is cultural, so it can change anytime when you identify yourself differently from your sex, either by personal thinking or peer pressure.

Not true, they are all part of the same group of internal organs and bodily functions. There is no gender without sex and no sex without sexuality. These three topics make a triangle the same way distance, time and speed do. They are all dependant on each other. The ratio of which they are applied is what is unique to each person. Don't spread this confusing woke tripe. It doesn't help people to understand the situation at all. In order to understand people need the fact as they are not presented to them in a way that you think makes it easy to understand. The simplification just further confused the situation. Take a look. You have a male(sex) who identifies as a woman (gender) who likes women(homosexual). ALL THREE STATEMENTS MUST BE PRESENT. Therefore they ARE NOT seperate. In order for a male to identify as a female he must be male in the first place then in order for her to like women she must be homosexual.

Remember this when you are shocked by people "identyfing" as dream-sexual, amongus-sexual, puppy-sexual etc. and immediatelly following with a set of pronouns that matches the "gender identity". Because, between trans people and those mocking them, there is only one group who knows so much about lgbt that they would create a gender ending in "-sexual"

If a package of juice or milk is swollen with air fit to burst...toss it! If your bag of chips has little air in it, squeeze gently and see if it deflates further. If it does...toss it. here where i live, Sweden, there is always date on the food when it was packed and estimation date on how long they expect the product to last. Usually the estimation date is way wrong though as it depends a lot on temperature, air, moisture etc. But very often, most products can last way past their date if properly treated. Either way, my point is - date is just an indicator, not guarantee. Even if you put the date yourself. You should always look - smell - taste. In that order. If the product fails on of them on the way, toss it.

Critical Thinking skills are helpful with this - Problem is, Critical Thinking is 1) Uncomfortable to most people because it require time and working on yourself in ONLY the interest in truly caring/knowing what is objectively true/real 2) Much more difficult than just believing what you want to [takes effort] and 3) often results in having to admit you might be wrong about something which, to most people, means accepting a feeling of not being able to save face, even when you don't tell anyone you realized you were wrong. We are a very very very lazy and inconsiderate species and I'm genuinely ashamed to be a part of the human race with this being, quite possible, my CORE reason. Human laziness makes it so that even people who aren't sociopaths are still typically pieces of garbage. Someday we'll all nuke ourselves because of this phenomenon and we will all deserve it on some major level.

this is why I have multiple email addresses. I have one that I use only for online shopping, throwaway things, or social media, because all those types of sites and activities result in the sharing of your email address. I have a different address just for the more official aspects of my life, aka, healthcare, job applications, etc

I fell for one once. It looked just like a regular shop, and the prices was just 10 dollars less, then another shop I had looked into. I ordered a washing machine. it never came, but the money disappeared, so I complained to my bank, and the bank paid the money back into my account. This happened about a year ago, but just the other day I was asked by a man, who told me he was working for the police, to give him more information, because the bank had not reported it. Naturally I looked up the policestation on Google and called him that way, to make sure, he really was a policeman. Once tricked I am much more careful. Especially since they had the audacity to send me a reminder letter in january, claiming, that I hadn't paid, though my account statement proved the money was sent on 6th of december.

I must also add that not just that most people don't know how to give first aid, but in majority of the movies it is totally wrong how they represent for example a mouth-to-mouth and how to press the chest, which could be crucial and if wrongly done, could do more harm.

I once heard from emt staff that "a a a stayin' alive" is not the ideal rhythm. But since it's so easy to remember and a lot of people associate this song with cpr, as long as they keep rhythmically pressing - they are still saving a life! Edit: apparently the best rhythm is just a tiny bit faster.

Yes, you should "hot the pot", but not put the kettle back on the boil. The few minutes it cools is perfect to make the tea. So, warm your tea pot with a small amount of water after the kettle boils, swirl the water in the pot, pour out that water, put the tea in the pot and add the rest of the water. Then enjoy!

This is just barbaric madness. Not only should the water be boiling, you preheat the pot and you bring the pot to the kettle so you lose as little heat as possible.

It depends entirely on the tea itself. Some tea will have compounds destroyed if the water is too hot and that will change the flavor. Most teas are actually recommended to steep just below boiling point, and a lot of herbals recommend even lower than that

It entirely depends on the kind of tea you're drinking. As far as I know, green or white tea shouldn't be brewed with boiling water, but nobody's ever criticised my father for boiling water for his peppermint tea. Do what you want, and don't divulge your secrets!

The egg is just a really big cell. In the yolk you can find a little white disk, called germinal disc, and it contains the nucleus and other cell organelles like mitochondria, golgi, etc.

As far as I know, the little red is not the embryo either but blood or tissue from the hens digestive system. Especially with older hens such particles can enter the egg during the internal development of said egg. It is more common in brown eggs as eggs with a white shell can be illuminated (not sure if that's the correct word here) and the particle can be spotted. the egg will then be discharged. But the eggs can still be consumed without any concern.

35 People Who Noticed An Alarming Number Of Individuals Not Knowing Basic Facts Share What They Were That pretty much every machine requires maintenance. Think dishwashers, washing machines, cars, mowers, etc. They aren't magic boxes. And they will last longer if you know how to maintain them. My mother in law is in her 80s and until recently didn't know that the dishwasher needs its filters cleaning every so often. Edit: since this blew up a bit, for those that would like to locate their dishwasher's filters, they're different for every make and model. You'd do well to Google the make and model of the unit and see if you can find a manual. Maybe even YouTube will have some information (YouTube is a great resource for learning about things). Taking my dishwasher as an example, there are some reasonably obvious plastic pieces in the bottom of the washing area that can be slid out/unscrewed (there are 3 parts to my filter). Rubber gloves when touching them might be a good idea. Cleaning them is as simple as taking a brush and some soapy water to them to remove all the gunk before reinstalling. You can also buy a plastic bottle full of chemicals that you put into the dishwasher. You run a cycle and the chemicals clean throughout the unit. I do both because I like a clean dishwasher. I do it every month or so, or whenever I notice that dishes aren't getting as clean as they should or some 'not clean' smell. Edit: thanks for the awards. Now clean your dishwashers!

My first dryer i bought brand new almost burned my apartment down. The lint was getting stuck on the inside walls (I cleaned the filter EVERY LOAD. I still do). But i just happened to be home and I smelled something burning. I worked at sears (where I bought it this was like 1999) and the guy who sold me the dryer came over to look at it and the whole inside of the square was covered in singed lint. Somehow it was getting in all that empty space around the main part.

Make sure that every time when you are using washing machine you dry bottom of gummy seal on machine door when machine is finished washing, there is always some left if you look underneath. Water disolves that gum and you can prolong working life of machine. Dont use paper towels because of small pieces, use cotton towel.

When I had a car youtube was great for small maintenance. I normally prefer written instructions but when you have to disassemble half your car to switch a light bulb a video is great. It wasn't really half the car, but still a ludacrios amount for one tiny bulb.

How a 4 way stop works. Every hurricane in Florida we've several traffic lights go out. People are supposed to treat it like a 4 way stop, but instead they do this nonsense, "oh, he went? 10 more of us will go! It's fine!!" I actually saw ONE light where people were doing it correctly after Ian and I nearly s**t myself I was so shocked.

I'm only going to partially agree here. Elective safety yes, basic electrical theory? Most people have no need. Is it really going to benefit me understanding the impact of resistance on current flow? I don't need the why of it to understand use the right size fuse. Don't plug too many things into an outlet. If you only have one thing plugged in and the breaker keeps tripping have an electrician look into it

The more important one in everyday is to be able to work out the current from the power draw, using I=W/V. This way you _know_ how many devices you can have on the same circuit.

In the UK it used to be the case that stamp duty (a tax on property purchases) did NOT work like this. If you exceeded the threshold, you paid a percentage of the full purchase price, and not the amount over the threshold. I got stung by this when I bought my first apartment, as I opted to have carpets, tiling and alarm installed, and it pushed me over the threshold, and my idiot solicitor neglected to tell me about it until afterwards. Thankfully things have now changed and it works the same as income tax banding now.

Here is another thing...People were freaking out about Bernie Sanders saying he was going to raise the tax rate on high earners by 2%. Everyone starts losing their minds. But they forgot to read the part on that tax being applied to people that earn between $50 million and $250 million a year...basically the 1% of the population that is uber rich. Yep..that ain't the upper middle class.

I always thought this should be emphasized more. Everyone pays the same amount on the first x amount of dollars they make, then the same amount on the next x amount, etc. But those who get up to those high tiers that are more highly taxed will take the whole amount of taxes they pay and apply it as a percentage of their entire income, and complain that it isn't fair their percentage is higher than people who made less. I realize in effect it's no different, but if more people looked at it the way it's actually designed, it may not seem as "unfair." (This is just a straight comparison and is entirely disregarding the argument about whether people with higher incomes should pay more in taxes.)

I myself only found out from one of my science electives in year 11/12 and even then it was a topic that only came up after a student asked my teacher about an incident that popped up on the news so chances are it would never have been mentioned otherwise. Schools should at least have a lesson/program highlighting the common risks at home and the methods to avoid/contain them. Homeroom class would have been a perfect time - we spent the majority of that twiddling our fingers until the bell rang

It depends on the car, not every car has this. A long time ago when I worked at a car rental European car brands seemed to have the cap on the left side of the vehicle whereas Asian car brands generally had it on the right. But it’s been some time and I think it now can differ between models of the same manufacturer.

I strongly suspect that those who don't know how to change a tire are those who actively don't *want* to know how to change a tire. That the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth, is directly related to the health of your heart and how much inflammation exists in your body.

There is *some* relationship between the health of your teeth and gums and the rest of your body (not necessarily your heart). Saying "direct relationship" is overstating it because it is saying that your tooth/gum health is always in proportion to the health of your heart, which is clearly not true (I currently have an ulcer on my gum and a perfectly healthy heart).

Please note that it says "certain" studies. Oral health is extremely important: Certain studies suggest that the same bacteria in the mouth have been found in plaque and blockages of heart arteries, leading to heart attack and stroke. They also indicate that those with gum disease may be nearly twice as at risk for heart attack and stroke.

Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening disease that not only involves the heart, but can also affect other organs. Bacteria enter the bloodstream from a source such as a dental infection, and travel through the blood to form vegetations on compromised heart valves.

I hope everyone reads this because I got a time out for suggesting someone in a different thread get their teeth fixed. They assumed I was referring to their looks. I was referring to their health. THIS is exactly what I meant.

Unsolicited advice is generally going to be taken as criticism. Criticizing the people in your personal life creates distance. Butting in where you aren't wanted is going to harm your relationships with other people, and they're going to take your opinions and advice less seriously over time because they'll think of you as a noodgy know-it-all. Overbearing people get tuned out. Instead, first ask yourself if your advice is even needed. Does this affect you? Is this an emergency? Is anyone going to be harmed if you don't put your oar in? Are you being asked for advice? Or is this person just sharing information about their day and building their relationship with you? And if you do need to weigh in, try leading with, "May I make a suggestion?" Otherwise, you're going to rile the other person up. And on the flip side, if you have a noodgy know-it-all in your life, it's best to simply pause them with a calm and polite, "thanks, but I didn't ask." If you try to explain your life to them, they see it as an invitation to be even more overbearing.

If you have a friend who is having a fight with their SO, let them vent, offer sympathy, but DO NOT say anything derogatory about the SO. When the fight is over, they're gonna remember.

Wish I could up vote this a million times. I have a friend who ruined our relationship because of how she spoke about my husband when I was just venting about something.

May depend on how you word/formulate your advise and the tone you use. Try: "I know your circumstances are or may be different, but what worked for me..."

Giving advices can be dangerous since nobody can predict all the consequences. So give an advice only if asked to, and always be carefull on the advice you give.

Fun aside fact: I legit think I know where my organs are (or at least some of them). It might be a malfunction in my brain. But I once went to the doctor and told him "the cartilage between my ribs and my sternum hurts" and he was surprised to find that I indeed had inflammation in the cartilage between my ribs and my sternum. When I get ovulation pain I can say my left ovary or my right ovary hurts. In general I have a very precise idea of exactly where pain is coming from.

That in a lot of vehicles, when you turn on your hazard lights, it disables the brake lights. This is bad because I have seen in rain storms people will drive with their hazards on. They think they are being extra safe but in reality they are making it more dangerous, because now the person behind them won't know when the person in front is stopping. EDIT: spelling

I'm not sure that's true, I live in the USA and for the cars I've seen, the hazards operate the turn signals, leaving brake lights functioning the same

No, you've got it backwards. If you have your hazard lights on and you brake, the solid brake lights will override the blinking hazard lights.

Also, if you break down at night on a narrow or two lane road, do NOT turn on your bright headlights. They blind any oncoming traffic and they will NOT see you.

Please don't downvote this, but reply a comment if I am wrong.... Don't the hazards blink, and when the brake is activated they would be solid, not blinking?

Usa here. Just to clear some confusion, the amber lamps are the only ones that blink when hazards are engaged. What OP is saying is that this disables the red break lights on some vehicles. Many states actually prohibit them while driving, saying they are only to be used for stationary vehicles, and this is one of the reasons

I disagree. Even if someone doesn't know, it takes about 20 seconds to learn how. Even if someone is a programmer, something as silly as this shouldn't stop them from doing the job

Leave which job? Though I don't think I've had to manually extract a zip file this century, because application programs that use them usually take care of that, I think knowing how to type "extract a zip file" into a search engine and follow the instructions is more important because you'll also know how to find answers to other things "computer knowledgy". But for most jobs, things should just work, this isn't the 20th century anymore.

Does anyone think extracting a zipfile is difficult, and when last was it necessary to do this? It's a bit ... old? For me more important is to understand where you saved your files. Many people do not know how to just do this ... choose a folder (other than desktop) and classify/categorise... make subfolders, etc. Then they phone me all like "I can't find my file" ... sigh.
