A business that has a physical place where people can come in is within their rights to establish their own rules that don’t contradict federal laws because it’s their property. For example, they can ban certain people from entering if they suspect they are a shoplifter or a troublemaker, but not because of their race or gender.

Apparently, getting banned from places is a real thing that happens not only in movies and people had some interesting stories to share when Reddit user PsycheAsHell asked “People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere for Life, What Happened?”

Which stories did you find the most amusing? Has someone banned you from a place before? What did you do to receive such a punishment? Share with us your stories in the comments!

I was once in Barnes and Noble , the 50 shades trilogy was in the college prep section. Right next to actual college prep books.

All I know about 50 Shades of Grey is that it exists (I just have no interest in it), so the significance of this is lost on me.

It's a very dirty, "sexy" book targeted for women.

“People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere For Life, What Happened?” (30 Answers) In college, at the local college book store, I attempted to sell some books back to the store. After hearing what the buyback value was, a guy behind me said he'd pay $20 more for my books (he was taking the same course the next semester sand the store's mark up would by 100%). The bookstore owner warned me if I sold to this other dude, I'd be banned for life. I told him money makes the world go round and took my extra twenty.

This benefits both of the parties (buyer and seller) ; the only thing the seller has done 'wrong' is to deprive the vile little s**t of a corporate rapist (bookseller) out of a bit of extra profit - good for you, more students should set up their own book swaps / sales and kick the bastards off campuses.

I did this around 2 months ago but unlike selling something, I offered the guy a better deal. If you are in the retro video games scene, you would know that the Jungle Green N64 with 2 controllers is worth around 200 at minimum and it's pretty valuable. So what happened was that the guy brought it in and tried to trade it in for a Gamecube. The store looked at it and said "We'll give you $80 for it but if you want a Gamecube, we'll give you the Gamecube but you'll have to pay extra $80 to cover up everything." I was pissed that the guy is getting ripped off and when he was looking for some other games, I sneakily told him about a better deal that I am willing to give him since I am looking for an N64 back then. I think the clerk knew what the hell I was doing when I walked out. The guy later told me that the clerk decided to give him the Gamecube and a game for the Green N64 because he knew he messed up. In the end, he got the Gamecube and I got away from trouble lol.

College books are ridiculous. I bought the older versions on eBay, most of which only had minor edits. Saved about 90% that way, and they still had all of the same information.

The local bookstores did the same thing with buybacks. I usually ended up selling my books online since I got more for them that way.

Would that even be actually legal? He purchased the book, therefore is the owner, and can do what he wants with said book. How can a university store ban him? What does he tell his profs next semester if he can't get books. Sounds like b.s. to me.

Yes...? Within the last few years, a book publisher conned a judge into agreeing that the publisher retained all rights to the book in order to ensure . Whether that held or not, there's now precedent for claiming the resale is piracy.

That’s why you first try to sell your course books privately, even when I went to university in the late 90’s (before the internet was huge, and before all these sale sites existed) there were ways to sell your course books. It probably way easier now. Also, any one who got banned from the uni bookstore just had to ask a friend to go in and buy their books for them.

There is nothing more corrupt that college bookstores and the deals made with instructors. 'Yes, this is the same book this class used last semester but it has a new preface so you need to buy the new edition at the 60% price increase.'

“People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere For Life, What Happened?” (30 Answers) I'm banned from a cafe in a town in North Wales; neither of which I'd been to prior to this experience. I walked in and the guy behind the counter said "You! I've told you before! You're banned!" I said, confusedly "I've never been here before", but he just pointed at the door, so I turned around and left. Almost 30 years ago.

Ah, been in this situation, but it was justified ; I used to be a freelance Chef and travelled the World, but based myself in the UK. Came back from a longish working trip to the Caribbean, rented a place to live (short term) in the South West, settled in and on my 3rd or 4th night back, went to the local pub, ordered a pint, only to be told 10 minutes later that I wasn't welcome .... turns out that the landlord of a pub in a town that I'd lived in 5 years previously had taken over this particular pub and as I'd had quite a torrid, brief fling with his Wife (still on the scene apparently), he wasn't too happy to see me ..... Hey ho, I spent quite a lot of my brief time there drinking at home or heading off to local towns for a beer or three !!

“People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere For Life, What Happened?” (30 Answers) The prison I used to work at. I had tried numerous times to receive therapy to treat PTSD I gained while working the job and thanks to the HR taking their vacation was not able to get it and the administrative assistant warden told me, quite literally, "officers don't need therapy and if they do then they aren't cut out to be officers" and refused to help me find help. When they learned (somehow) that I had sought therapy on my own, they attempted to place me on "indefinite administrative leave" citing "officer has conducted themselves in a manner unfitting their position" So yeah. I sued them and quit and they banned me for life... from their prison. Okay.

Police were viewed the same way. If you were having a hard time dealing with one particular case or just the accumulation of cases you worked, you were viewed as less than masculine. A lot of times there would be a department chaplain to help the officers but you were a wuss if you went to them.

Yeah this doesn’t seem like a loss to me lol. Gyms are kind of a ripoff tbh, my goal is just to stay fit and I’ve always worked out from home, in my living room or back yard FOR FREE with free YouTube videos/programs and never had an issue. Spent $50 on a few weights to help. Even grew abs. If you’re a body builder this wouldn’t work, but honestly, if you are an average human with 10 square feet of room and you’re also allowed to go outdoors, don’t waste your money on a gym. Would rather save my $200 a month and just do free squats and lift free small weights in my free living room, in 2022 gyms are such a money-grabbing scam for most ordinary people when you guys could get the same physical education for free, don’t be a sucker!

That seems to be pretty common, they make business estimating that most of the people dont actually eat that much so that covers the few that do, but when competitive eaters or "normal" people who eat massive amounts come in they decline service next time because they lose money if they let them eat there :D

I sort of agree with bans like this when a person hogs one particular food. Eating most or all of one thing by yourself is not how buffets are supposed to work.

Went to a breakfast buffet and watched a guy, guessing about 16 years old, grab the very large container of bacon and dump ALL OF IT on his plate. Restaurant had more and eventually brought it out, but still. Don't think anybody got banned though. Just rude and selfish behavior. It is all you can eat, but pace yourself a bit and let others have a chance.

All you can eat was actually a waste of money for my family- our appetites were too small to justify the entrance cost! I never really like the greasy food they served either, though the dessert was good so that's all I ate the last couple of times I had to go there for a friend's birthday.

In most jurisdictions in the USA, if you abandon a vehicle on a public street or a private property and that vehicle is towed away after it sits unclaimed for some length of time (which varies by state) the towing company can file a lien against the title for the vehicle and after some further length of time foreclose on the vehicle, take legal ownership of it and either send it to auction or scrap it. That sounds complicated but it's all simple paperwork that towing companies do all the time. If your car breaks down and has no value, the cost of you paying to have it towed away might even exceed its value as scrap metal. This way after some time passes and some paperwork gets filed the towing company gets their money anyway without you having to do any extra work. Alternatively a few towing companies around here will tow at no added cost in exchange for the title to the vehicle.

Same here when I was 10 years old, but it was my friend who shoplifted and I was banned by association. My mom asked me once why I never wanted to go into the store with her. I just told her that it smelled funny.

“People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere For Life, What Happened?” (30 Answers) Not me, but an ex. He walked into a Best Buy to look at Fitbits. He picked one up, concealed it and walked into the restroom to steal it. What he didn't know was that a Best Buy employee was in the restroom and heard him opening the package. He walked out of the stall, Fitbit on his wrist and came fact to face with the employee. They charged him and he spent a night in jail. He was most assuredly banned after that.

This must have been a while ago. I keep seeing/hearing/reading about people walking into big box stores and walking out with power saws, tvs and other high end merchandise. The stores and police won't do anything about it these days.

“People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere For Life, What Happened?” (30 Answers) Got fired and banned from Lowe’s for not working hard enough. Honestly, if I was gonna lose my job for something, it was climbing the shelves, making myself a little cubicle in the shelves I could sleep in…and stealing hundreds worth of cold brew coffee. In my defense, however, I had 11-hour overnight shifts. Never again.

If he didn't want to comply with Lowe's shift schedule, he should'nt work there. He's a lazy opportunist employee who want free stuff without paying his due. How come you think of it as a good think just because the victim is a big corporation? That's the poor-minded people's way of thinking: 'Oh, it's ok if rich people being frauded because they are rich. It's social justice. And my opinion is right because I'm poorer than them. I am the victim'

It's true. I've taught my kid about not taking things and not touching things in stores. She's not stolen anything yet (to my knowledge), but I've noticed that at home, her little hands can grab something and hide it ridiculously fast. One minute something is there and the next it's hidden in box inside the stuffed animal bin two rooms over. I feel it's only a matter of time before I have to take her to return something to store somewhere. She doesn't yet understand the difference between putting something in the cart (acceptable) and putting something in my bag (unacceptable).

When my oldest son was about 1 and a half, we were at the health department. When we got home I was pulling things out of the diaper bag and found about 5-6 pieces of a toy that was not ours. Wooden train tracks and big wooden puzzle pieces with County Health Department stamped on the back. Apparently, my son has been shoving them in there when I wasn't looking. We returned them of course and the front desk lady just cracked up about it.

This happened to me too. When I came home from shopping at the drugstore, I saw some make-up items in the storage rack under the seat of the stroller. My then 1,5 yo daughter must have put them there. I think that storage rack is below the reach of the alarm ports at the store's entrance, so that must be the reason they weren't set off. At that age she constantly took random items from shelves. Most of the times I would see it and put the items back, but not this time. Maybe it's not totally right, but I ended up just using the make-up stuff. My daughter accidentally picked the right color concealer! 😁

Having jobs as a babysitter/nanny when younger and taking said sat children with you when you had to do shopping I found out quickly little kids are kleptomaniacs mostly. Either they are too little to realise when they see others taking stuff off the shelf and putting it in the cart it does not mean they too can follow suit. Or they do work out there is the checkout process and money exchange (usually after getting found out with stolen items from before then) and realise they do not have said money so they get more ingenious at stashing stuff. A few of the kids I used to have to almost strip search before we would leave a place to make sure nothing was going out that was not purchased

We were leaving a bookstore in a mall and had just stepped out. They got these stuffed animals around the checkout counter at perfect height for a little kid. My daughter, who was about 2 or 3 at the time decided to just take one as I was busy paying. We had gotten a few feet out of the store and I noticed she was holding one of the plushies. I immediately told her she can't just take things without paying and brought her back to the store and got her to apologize. The store clerk told her "You're lucky we're not calling the police this time." I'm guessing they were trying to scare her out of stealing again. It sort of scared me cos I know who would be the one penalized and it ain't the tot. She got a good scolding from me, too. And, no, she never stole again.

I got banned from the local library for "being there too often." The crazy logic was no kid would actually read that many books so I clearly was using the library for some other purpose. When I went to check out the latest round, the librarian cut up my library card and made a massive deal of having me removed from the building. I was 14. When I moved back to town in my late 20s I tried to get a library card and found out I WAS STILL BANNED!!!! They had me down as "conducting illicit activities on property" in the system. Luckily the librarian at Central got it overturned in under a month. Still nuts.

Banned from 3 places for shoplifting before i finally realized i was a terrible thief. One place i tried to steal an orange. Put it under my shirt and pretended to be fat. Didn't work.

I stole at Sears also forty years ago and after they let me go told me that I was welcome back to shop. It took my years to show my face again.

Sears is practically out of business now, so you can take comfort in that.

“People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere For Life, What Happened?” (30 Answers) I was banned for 99 years while my cousin was banned for life at knott’s berry farm in California after he jokingly asked the staff what they’ll do if he had hydrogen napalm in his water bottle.. They had to shut down the theme park for the rest of the day due to a bomb threat and bomb squad escorted us out. Good thing we weren’t asked to go to a police station, but that was one hell of an experience for me. I’ve never gone to any theme parks with him after that. [2011]

Is there a practical difference between being banned for 99 years and being banned for life?

Yes, after 99 you can go back for centuries untill you die. Even if you are 300 years old you still wouldn’t be allowed in the case of a lifetime ban

Some things you can't joke about. Like if you are on a plane and you spot your friend Jack, you can't yell "Hi, Jack!" This will not turn out well for you.

“People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere For Life, What Happened?” (30 Answers) A local non-name brand dvd store when I was a kid. I tripped and knocked over a shelf of dvds near the entrance. Banned for life. The store closed a few years later so it ended up being for the duration of their life.

“People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere For Life, What Happened?” (30 Answers) I started asking silly prompt questions on the WoW off-topic forum. The kind you occasionally see on askreddit or the other ask subs, but this was way before reddit took off. A mod deemed them to be spam and permabanned me.

“People Who've Been Banned From Somewhere For Life, What Happened?” (30 Answers) I was banned from a discord server for having a profile picture they identified as an anime profile picture, and that meant that I was a weeb, but it was not from an anime, but from a video game.
