Who wouldn't like to achieve financial stability? However, in a world that encourages instant gratification, many of us succumb to the allure of overspending, accumulating debt, and therefore end up living beyond our means.
Interested in what are the biggest pitfalls to avoid, one Reddit user made a post on the platform, asking everyone to share what they believe to be the biggest money mistakes. And to their delight, many responded.
Retirement might seem far away, but the longer we ignore our personal budget, the harder it will be to catch up down the line.

Buying designer shoes and expensive jewelry for your baby. eliettgrace replied: I've heard seen stories where parents send their kid to daycare in Gucci and other designer s**t like that and then get mad when the clothes are messed up cause the kid had fun. 1lilhedgehog replied: I once saw a meme that showed tiny preschooler feet in Jordan’s and it said, 'You spend all that money for your preschooler to go to school in Jordan’s...just for them to be jealous of all the kids who have the light-up Paw Patrol shoes. lol too true.
Why buy designer clothes for children? They don’t understand what it is in order to appreciate it and they grow so fast, they’ll have outgrown them in a few months/weeks. Get them something they’ll actually need!
Buying designer clothes for a little kid is 100% for the parents not the kid. It's about showing off their wealth not actually giving their kid better clothes.
Load More Replies...I told my now 15-year-old she could get Doc Martens when her feet stopped growing. I put away the cash and found what looks like a new pair but was second-hand at a flea market. Our feet are the same size, so it was a total surprise. I got a rib-crunching hug. They will last forever. I've had mine 20+ years
Why do people care about how expensive the shoes are, all you should need are shoes that fit and don’t fall apart, it shouldn’t matter how expensive they are
It’s totally to show off your wealth. Being able to afford a fancy car or designer clothing is seen a status symbol in some social circles. It’s a way to rub your wealth in the faces of other people.
Load More Replies...A former in-law once worked in a day care that had a pair of clients like that. They'd drop their little girl off dolled up to the eyeballs in expensive frou-frou dresses and demand that she not be allowed to play with the other children because "It will get her clothes dirty". ___ The daycare staff would wait until they left, change her into some ordinary clothes that were left behind, let her play to her heart's content, then change her back into the frou-frou stuff 30 minutes before mom and dad arrived to pick her up.
So true! My daughter won't wear shoes unless they are light up! They can be whatever, but they need to have lights 😂
When my brother and SIL got married, I bought the wedding clothes for their three children (6, 4 and 1 at the time). We agreed we wouldn’t even go designer for that occasion. Just nice high street clothes that the two older kids picked out themselves (they also picked the outfit for their baby brother). They looked adorable and no stress about stains or rips.
Expensive designer clothes? No. But Oshkosh, Gerber and others? Well made, wears well and is washable? PERFECT!
True, but also one of my favorite parenting hacks is to go to the children's consignment shops in the wealthy neighborhoods. I don't care about Gucci or anything like that, but I can find Gap and Gymboree stuff that I would never spring for new but that I know is good quality, sometimes with the tags still on, and pay like $5 for it. Win!
Going into debt for a wedding.

This is so true. A close friend is still paying off her wedding but the marriage ended last year.
Fancy, over the top weddings are nice, but the point of weddings is to display your love to you partner, and it shouldn’t cost thousands to do that!
According to the bridezilla posts some brides do seem to be more in love with the wedding itself.
Load More Replies...I’ve been to a lot of weddings in my time (these days, it’s more divorces and funerals) but tbh they all blend into one - even my own. It’s just one day and is given way too much importance compared to what else you will do in your marriage. You go because you care about the couple - not the price of the meal or decorations. I blame wedding planners’ BS for making people spunk so much cash unnecessarily.
there should only be two people who decide the wedding and planning....the bride and groom
Load More Replies...Yeah, I don't get expensive weddings. Finances are often the biggest point of tension for couples, why start a new chapter of your lives together with a giant bill? My husband and I spent $800, got married on a cliffside in Muir Woods, overlooking the Pacific, while whales screamed their whale-songs and then we (and our whopping 10 guests) celebrated and camped together afterwards! We both grew up dirt poor so doing things on the cheap come naturally.
Mine, 32 years ago was my parent's back yard. I wore a $39 dress from Penneys.
My mom made my dress. We had the reception in the church fellowship hall. We got trays from the local grocery store. An ipod was our DJ. We had so much fun and loved it so much!
Load More Replies...It's been shown that the more expensive the wedding, the shorter the marriage will be. I've seen this several times. Get married in something comfortable with a few close friends and family in attendance. It's a civil ceremony, not the coronation of the queen. Those big weddings are nothing but unneeded stress and expense.
I would like to have a simple courthouse wedding. But it's a big NO in my culture.
You can go against your culture..what's it going to do?
Load More Replies...As we sat in the waiting room, the couple before us came out of the judge's chambers looking radiant. The couple after us was a remarkable couple. The groom was a Native American man in dress military uniform. The bride was a gorgeous Native American woman, dressed in stunning Native American garments. They were such a striking pair that we could barely avoid staring at them. The other couples were a big part of what made that day unforgettable for us, and it didn't cost a dime. We're still going strong after 25 years... The wedding does not make the marriage.
When they have designer clothes and get their hair and nails done every 2 weeks but can't afford to pay the rent.
That depends on the service provider. Very few people actually buy their phone outright - it usually comes free or very low cost with a longer service contract. Some providers give their clients an upgrade phone every one or two years if they've paid for the long term contract.
Load More Replies...I knew someone like this. She was at the hairdressers and there was nothing - literally - nothing for the kids to eat. The cupboards were empty.
When I was at my absolute poorest I would find ways to get my nails done if I could. Bills always came first, but if I could make $20 tutoring my neighbors kid for a test or whatever, that money went to a manicure. Even if it wasn't anything fancy and I just got my nails shaped and polished, it was the one little that made me feel a little less terrible about my situation. Even if you're broke, you are still allowed to be kind to yourself when you can. I do my best not to judge people when I know they're broke and I see they have something nice. I've been there and that nice thing may be the only thing helping them hold on to their sanity.
I'm slowly learning this. It's taken me a long time to get my head around the idea. i can pamper myself because it just feels good, and as long as the essential things are paid, I should make myself feel better.

On this specific episode there was a guy who was as close to being bald as you possibly can without being 100% bald. The few hairs on his head were super short. And he was in huge debt. But he still insisted on going to the hairdresser every 2 weeks. Because he felt it made him look better. Lol. In the end he taught his gf to cut it and she would do it for free. But... he was bald! And he spent money each month at the hairdresser's while he was so deep in debt he had to get help figuring out how to get a healthy financial situation again. (This is just one of the gems from that show. Lol)
I’m sure if those people saw my crusty musty damaged, banged up and un-painted nails they would faint XD

True! I remember all of the random, small things me and my siblings did in summer vacation like going to the park or pool more than any big thing years later
I grew up on three different continents, between two divorced parents & having visited an almost 1/4 of the nations of the world. My absolute fondest & most vivid mentored of the trips we took 30 miles down the peninsula to stay at the Marriott hotel, which at the time owned the Great America Amusement Park. In the middle of what is now Silicon Valley & adjacent to Levi’s Stadium. I recall so much about these trips, but the hotel’s indoor/outdoor pool brings the warmest & fondest memories.
Load More Replies...I mean, it's true they probably will remember it forever. But $25k goes a heck of a long way towards other things. I'd probably rather have a $5,000 vacation five years in a row than one $25k one.
That's what I was thinking. My parents worked in higher education and we never took any big extravagant trips when I was a kid, but we took lots of fun little ones. I have a lot of fond memories and looking back now, I can't imagine how a trip to Disney would have made our lives any better.
Load More Replies...We usually go camping with a tent. Not even abroad (living in the Netherlands). Even with a 30 minute drive, the kids love it. When the campsite has a pool and a playground, they'll have the time of their lives. And a tent is superspecial because it is such a different way of sleeping and living than we normally do. And it is really affordable!
SIL took her 5yr old to Disney (who won't rember it anyway) and is now $20k in debt... did I mention that she moved into her Mom's house a year prior to "save money" to buy a bigger house? She's the poster child for dumbass decisions.
So sad. I went to Disneyland when I was 8 and sister was 5. I vaguely remember it but sister says she doesn’t remember any of it. I also remember being scared on most of the rides. I liked them better when I went as a teen. Pretty sure parents take little kids because they want to go themselves or have cute photos.
Load More Replies...When you're adults saying "remember that time..." it's not the theme parks you bring up, IME, it's the place you always went to ride bikes or skate, the tree you always climbed at the park, and the holiday where you camped in tents, and made toast over a campfire, and swam in a stream.
I liked Disneyland as a kid up to a point where my memories also involve being hot, tired of standing in lines and my parents being stressed about the airport/hotel situation. Camping at National Parks had a greater impression on me. I still seek out national parks and don’t have any interest in carnival rides
I never went to Disney and I don't feel deprived. Kid me was happy anywhere I could read and/or swim. Adult me is too.
My STBXH. - Quit his job 2 weeks after we bought our house, and then didn't tell me for 2 months. - Has been unemployed for a minimum of 6 months every consecutive year since 2019. - Forgot to transfer his (very small) portion of money to our joint account on payday last month, causing several of our bills to bounce. Got all defensive when I tried to explain why forgetting something like that is extremely risky, and when I tried to explore ideas on how we can prevent recurrence from something like that happening again. - Bailed/ghosted on our tax appointment last year. As in, never showed up in the first place, and refused to answer phone calls and text messages, leaving me to fend for myself during the tax appointment. - Suggested we take out a personal loan to cover our escrow shortage. But remember, he's unemployed. So GUESS WHO would be paying back the loan, even though we're already paycheck to paycheck? That's right, yours truly. I could go on and on, but I'll stop there. I can't wait to be divorced from this deadbeat.

Seeing a a behemoth of a pickup truck with all the bells and whistles parked in front of a mobile home in a trailer park.
Absolutely! I live in a trailer home on a lot in the country. My mortgage is hilariously low and I have my nice cars parked out front. It works perfectly for us.
Load More Replies...no, highly disagree on this one. I know a few folks who live in trailer parks because they like it. They own the trailer, like paying to have someone else take care of the land around it and it saves them a ton of money so they can buy nicer vehicles that they like. This one is wrong and stupid.
There's a guy up the street here who has a big shiny pickup with AR-15 stickers and all kinds of anti-government/libertarian bumper stickers. "Defund Government" "Don't Tread on Me" One of them reads "F#** Joe Biden" but the F has been replaced with an assault rifle. The dude lives in SUBSIDIZED HOUSING. Yeah, our tax dollars are paying for this guy's house so he can complain about how the government is ripping him off.

The stigma attached to mobile homes is the half the reason I didn't invite people to my house after school and during the summer. Definitely impacted making friends.
As a social worker, I am always encouraging people to work toward home ownership and it’s often going to be a mobile home. Having an affordable mortgage for 30 years is way better than being homeless every time a landlord decides to double the rent on your crappy apartment like they have been doing the past few years.
Load More Replies...A trailer is a home. Mine is paid off. Land and all. Don't knock it while you're paying 1k for rent!
My filthy rich uncle lived in a trailer his entire life. He came here from China, married my aunt, and they stayed in her trailer. Even after having my four cousins. He said he would rather save that money for his kids because he doesn't care about it as long as he has food and a roof over his head!
since no one it seems can afford a home the rent apartments. no yard, no privacy, restrictions on redecorating the interior, and little parking. you can buy a mobile home and have a yard, privacy parking and usually a clubhouse with activities and a pool. the rent on your space is rent controlled at least in California and you can renovate or redecorate all you want.
C'mon man, if they're satisfied with their current housing situation why can't they spend their fun money on something they find fun?
Because paying for a double-wide is throwing money in the wind. A site built home builds actual wealth.

I am child free by choice. Mainly because I have no desire to have kids (and now I’m too old). In the past when people asked me why, I usually said I simply could not afford them. It is amazing how many people thought that was an unacceptable answer, and surely I could make it work. Well, yeah, I would have had to, but I don’t want to. I cannot afford a second house worth of human, you know.

Stop glorifying idiots with multiple children. I DO NOT mean merged families, I mean the ones who pop out a child every ten months and moan about how poor they are. Then the children start having babies.
I also made sure two was the limit… not really because it’s unaffordable but because two is more than we can deal with already!
Load More Replies...Knew I didn't want the two-legged kind of kids when I was under 10 years old! Now many decades later I still feel the same way. The problem is by the time you have anough money to afford kids, you are too old, or don't have the patience to take care of them
My uncles did this. My father (who was/is not rich) paid for most of their expenses. My cousins aren't happy with my father as they think he should've done more and my siblings and I aren't happy with the way things went. We were or are not rich but my father had a fixed income. We had to restrict our expenses so that our cousins could have their expenses paid for.
Signing up for a payment plan...for tattoos. I met a woman on a dating app once that had her whole body almost covered of tattoos. She had a low income job so I wondered how she could afford them. Turns out she was on a payment plan with the tattoo studio and I was like 'yeah, no thanks.'
I had a friend who had borrowed money from me, I thought she was in deep s**t at the end of the month, that it was to pay for food for her children. But no, it was for a new tattoo. Fortunately, she refunded me. We're not friends anymore, not because of that, but it didn't weigh in his favor.
That's weird that the client would do this and that the tattoo parlor would allow this.. I'd hate to know the interest on such a payment plan

My wife’s siblings each just received a 117k disbursement from their mothers trust. So far one brother who doesn’t own a home nor a pension plan and is 55 went out and bought a brand new Harley Davidson Full bagger bike. The other brother, who was homeless three months ago is shopping for a Dodge Charger. He is 65 and can’t afford to retire. Her three sisters haven’t made any big purchases yet.It is tough to watch knowing how hard my in-laws worked to leave a little money for the siblings.
Hmm, at least the bike one the bike is around $30k. That still leaves around $87k. Doesn't say what sort of Dodge Charger so can't really tell how much the other brother is aiming to spend. But if he's got himself back into a place and set some money aside, maybe that's not a terrible thing either. Get a car he loves, keep working til he dies. If he's enjoying himself and happy...
and if he buys a classic Charger, it probably won't go down in price that much, or perhaps even get mot expencive? Also they where 6 siblings? totals to $702k, is that "a little money"? 😑 We also don't know any of the back story. Two homeless sons? always having the latest iPhone
I don't get how people have a desire to get used to a new phone every year. I just upgraded my Samsung phone. The new one is more fragile, and took me a while to get used to. Just like my old one. It's a pain the a**e. I'm keeping this new one for as long as I can.
Mine's second hand and I've had it for 6 years and I am going to wring every last drop of useful out of it before I even look at a "new" (second hand) one.

My work takes the old phone back when I get an upgrade 🙁
Load More Replies...A lot of people’s mobile plan includes an automatic update. Apple & Samsung even off them directly. What drives me crazy is the cost of “renting/leasing” a phone from a mobile provider. It’s so not economical. I know not everyone can fork over $1300 for a new iPhone or $1600 for a new a Galaxy, but buying the phone outright saves ~$25-50 per month. I bought my iPhone 11 for $800, used it for 4 years. My mobile provider would have included $27/mo on my bill had I leased it. That’s about $400 more than I paid. I’d it’s doable, always buy and use it for as long as possible vs lease. Unless you want that automatic upgrade.
Or latest Android flagship for that matter. I try to buy a flagship but I also try to skip as many generations as possible. I'm currently on a Note 20 Ultra and hoping to keep it until at least Note 25 or 26 are a thing.
This one is a bit of a cliché and can be misleading. Many service providers give a high priced phone for nothing with the longer term, pricier service contracts.Sometimes that contract includes an upgrade to a newer model from time to time. So it's not as if the person is going out and *buying* a brand new phone for $1000 or more.
I am upgrading my phone on average every ~5 years. Not because I can't afford it (I am earning 3.5x my country average) but because I want to use it as long as possible.
Same here. I've had the same Samsung Note for years. I just don't see the need for a new one.

This was probably in Australia. I havent smoked in years but a pack of 50 cigarettes here is about $100.
Load More Replies...A pack of cigarettes on the admittedly high side is ~10 bucks. Assume a rent of $1000 and he would have to buy over 100 packs of smokes a week or 14 packs a day. That makes 280 cigs a day and at 4 minutes per cig equates to her smoking nonstop for 18+ hours a day. Seems like a bit of hyperbole to me.
Addiction is not a "financial choice". Cigarettes are not a "bad habit", it's a very serious addiction. I've talked to people that have had an easier time stopping heroin than cigarettes.
It’s not easy to stop smoking. Ask any of the millions of people who want to but can’t.

I have a car payment. I don't regret it at all. Now I have a decent credit score. But I also got really lucky and got a 2006 Honda Accord (one of the most reliable cars from 2006) with only 30k miles on it for only $10,000, and I paid $4,500 up front and my grandpa also chipped in $2,000.
Load More Replies...On the other hand, a car payment is buying a tangible asset. Rent is money that is gone forever.
Sort of, but you’re paying 30-50% more than the true value of a vehicle just for the privilege of someday owning that “asset” once it’s depreciated after years of accumulating mileage and paying it off. I get what you’re saying, but paying $60K to eventually own a 5-year-old depreciated $30K “asset” isn’t much better than “wasting money” renting. The truth is a lot more complex than just claiming one option is better than the other.

I know several people who do this because they don't know how to cook or how to use the internet to teach themselves things. The amount of money they waste is shocking. They’re millennials like me so the problem is not lack of resources or education. I have noted they all have wealthy parents. This is just my anecdotal experience so take it with a grain of salt :)
I mostly eat/cook at home but there are some places where I can order a $6.49 lunch for takeout, take it home and have 2-3 meals worth of food.
I have a Mexican restaurant close to me that has a special for $9.99 and I can make 3-4 meals off of just one order. I rarely go because I'm on such a tight budget being on disability.

My mom loved her timeshare through RCI and Bluegreen. I've stayed at some amazing hotels by having her use her points. The reason they get bad reps is because not everyone knows how to say no to the sales rep at the little dinner they throw for members. Were the maintenance fees high? Ya, but if you travel a lot, it does pay for itself. My mom left after her divorce but said she'd definitely do it again if she could.

Bottled water. It costs more per gallon than gasoline and most people have been told that city water is sucky even though a ton of bottled water companies get it from municipal sources anyways. And if you care, filter it at home.

This has to be location related. Nestle own the majority California’s water because they bottle it. From municipal water sources. In Cali, brands like Arrowhead & Crystal Geyser are bottled “at the source” which means municipal water bottled in the region the brand claims to be from. As in, not from a geyser, but the local tap water in a town near a geyser. So, you may not be able to trust your local municipal water, but bottled water is some locations municipal water. You

I have well water and have a 4 filter in-line system before it reaches any of the taps in the house. Then I have an additional counter top filter for the kitchen sink. So that's 5 filters. My water is still corrosive and will leave orange stains after a while because of the high iron content. So, yeah, I'm drinking bottled water at home and don't need to be judged for it.
Thank God for tap water. We (UK) may currently have sewage pouring into our waterways and sea, due to greedy private Water Companies, but, thankfully, our tap water is still excellent.
99% of the water i drink is tapwater. At work they have one of those big coolers and i ignore it and get tapwater. When im in the States, some of that tapwater is just absolutely disgusting. I had no problem in New York, but cant get over Chicago or Los Angeles.

Driving a very expensive car with tons of body damage because all their money is going to their $800 a month car payment and they can’t afford to fix the damage they caused with their s****y driving.
Windir666 replied:
I had this exact conversation with my friend today. If you cant afford to fix your car, you probably shouldn't be owning a 2022 $60,000 Mercedes.
tristanjones replied:
The financially responsible decision is driving a beat-up reliable car because you own it outright and most people intend to drive it into the ground before buying another one.
Firstly, this is why you get insurance. Even if you're the best driver ever and will never have an accident it doesn't mean someone won't smash into you. Secondly, you should be factoring insurance and basic maintenance into the costs. And most fancy cars cost way more than people expect. Even things like tyres cost double, triple or more than a "regular" car. My first car was second hand when I got it, and I drove it for roughly 20 years. In the end it was so worn out I sold it to a wrecker (it as 25ish years old by that point). Unless something drastic happens my current car will be the same.
People keep asking me when I'm going to replace my car, a 2012 Hyundai with 397,000 miles. It's paid for and runs well and I keep current on maintenance. So what if it has a couple of dings. It's not worth taking on a car payment of several hundred dollars a month just because of that.
I have a 2008 Volvo Station car, XC70, old type with actual independent 4x4. It gets the normal TLC and a yearly check at the dealer's garage. It was back then a decision for the future, to last at least 25 years. Technically it was way ahead of other cars, now it matches the features almost all cars come with. However, it looks old fashioned with all the buttons and knobs and no huge screen. But it does have this James Bond sunken display, which pops up out of the dashboard. In the meantime paid off, slightly dented and scratched from all the holiday adventures in rough areas and daily business for the stables. Did you know that 5 bales of hay/straw fit exactly in the back?
There is a Hungarian saying: If you want to keep horses, you should have money for hay. Some people like to buy used luxury cars eg. a 15 yo. Merc S Class for $20k, they the go bankrupted when a transmission replacement costs $10k.
Remember that woman who bought her dream car (a Ferrari) but could not afford insurance? She had an accident on her very first drive. Not sure if this was real or only show, but it fits here I think.
Never had a car I could trade in. Always then to the ground. My car has just clocked 400,000Km and I hoping to get an extra 50~ 80 thousands out if her.
Big rims and tires that cost 4K on a car that's worth 2K.
It's bad enough when they slap those rims on old beaters but seeing them on a new Camaro, Mustang, Charger, Challenger, etc. makes me want to cry.
I have a friend who's husband runs an auto and body shop that specializes in imports. Every time one of the Fast and Furious movies comes out he has kids dragging in their parents old Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc. or buying used cars and dragging them in wanting to turn them into tuners. Those 10 movies have put both of their kids through college and paid off their house.
They're getting the shaft. My truck came stock with 4 rims. 5 if you include the spare.
Honestly big rims and tires can start at AT LEAST $4K on almost any vehicle, even a $4,000 or $40,000 or $60,000 or $80,000 vehicle.
That's not the point here - it is about the relation 2k to 4k

Payday loans are predatory loans and would be forbidden in almost every other country. It's basically a loan shark business. But sometimes low income people need money for emergency purposes like the car broke down and they need to get to work.
nemesismkiii replied:
Oh this 100%. As someone who has worked in financial services, I HATE these places. I will always advocate if you have lower income or cannot seem to work up savings for whatever reason, try switching from a bank to a credit union for your banking needs. They may not be as large as banks or be as good for if you need to travel, but they are local and try to help their local communities since they are owned by them.
Agree with the commenters. It's not so much poor financial decisions as decisions made out of desperation (usually) and people don't think about what happens next when they are desperate to put food on the table today, or fix the truck they need to get to work.
And I get that mentality. You just think to yourself that you'll deal with any repercussions later. Right now, stomach rumbling and food is running low, the first of the month is coming up quick and the bills are overdue. That's all you can think of. It would be better to borrow from family, but that's not always guaranteed and can leave an awkward, uncomfortable vibe whenever you see them next. They may not be able/willing to help.
Load More Replies...I used a payday loan place ONCE. I needed $175 for an emergency and ended up paying them just over $400 for the privilege. I was lucky that I only needed it once, I feel awful thinking of those who really need quick cash services like this and just get absolutely gouged on the regular :( getting rich off poor people’s desperation is definitely a kind of low I’m glad I’ve never sunk to
I'll admit I have used these places, but never an online one. The 2 places I'll go to, the service is decent. I never feel ashamed. They tell me upfront what the payback is. My country has payday loan interest rates regulated and kept low enough that it doesn't cripple you, as long as you're not getting a big loan. From what I have experienced at these places, vs banks and credit card companies, there's not a big difference. If I borrow, say, $100 from a payday loan, one time. I'm paying back $117. If I take out a credit card and spend $100 then I could be paying back $129 if I don't pay it back within the timeline that may not line up with my payday. My last job screwed us over with hours cuts so bad, the payday lenders were what kept us fed and in staying put in our home. It took a bit to get out of the cycle but I did eventually when I got a better, stable job. Do I encourage people to use them? No, not at all. Do I think they're predatory? No, because I never felt pressured.
I once had 2 payday loans at once. It was stupid and I was younger and every pay day I had to go make the rounds to renew them. My husband (now my ex) said "just don't pay them! We'll take all the money out of the bank. We'll get the overdraft charge and we can just go in and pay them off as we get paid" I was nervous but decided to trust his idea. It worked! I was hemmed up in these stupid payday loans that one of the ladies at a payday loan place bought me a baby gift when I was pregnant! I was there so much she bought me a gift! It was so very easy and it didn't reflect on my credit score. I'm not sure if it's the same situation now , or if there would be more consequences now, but it worked for me. After they were paid off I put my money back in the bank and resumed direct deposit.
Car repairs are one of the few things you have to pay in full immediately. Almost everything else you can do a payment plan, get charity assistance, get a free or cheap one online or at a thrift store, etc. Medical providers usually don't even charge interest, so medical bills are never a reason to get one of those loans. But your car breaks down, you have to get to work and there is no public transportation; you are stuck.
It depends on the circumstances: are they desperate for food or for the new iPhone?
This depends on where you go. The place I used to use was amazing. Sometimes, I just needed a $100 bucks so I could get groc and gas because bills were more than budgeted. As long as you use them as a tool and not a solution to all problems, then it's better. Please do your research. Not all are the same. The place I used I'd usually borrow between $150-200 with the interest and fees it worked out to about $175-250. Easier to do that and know I can feed myself and get to and from work rather than worrying. I was never pressured. I was more pressured at a Title Loan place that used my car title as collateral now that is predatory.

Where I live we tend to brag, that we found it at a second hand shop or a flea market for only ... a much lower price than if it had been bought as new. It is sort of a sport with us.
The correlation is I spent so much so I must have that much. It’s the same as wearing or Owning expensive things, I must be able to afford it. This is for people who want to show off their money (or pretend). I get why it makes sense to them. But I would say most people don’t wanna listen to it or care.

I had an acquaintance who paid for most things with cash and would toss any coins he received as change into the bin in the center console of his car. After a year or so, the bin started overflowing. I pointed out that he probably had at least $100 in there. He said when it gets too full he just dumps the whole thing in the trash. It's too much bother to take the coins to the bank.
This is what I do with pennies. It takes so many to make any real $ so I usually just put them in the tip jar or take a penny leave a penny cup.

I love it when I see a woman with specialty nails (manicured with designs, etc.), a new phone, fake lashes, designer clothes, a new expensive car, lots of jewelry, but they pay for groceries with food stamps, while also buying beer/alcohol and cigarettes. And the groceries they buy are things like steak, fish, chicken, name brand items ( vs. store brands), all the things that are more expensive, and a massive load of junk food and sodas for the kids.
Beer and cigarettes aren't covered by EBT, she has to pay for those. Fish and chicken are healthy and covered. Steak? Well steak is also covered, it's healthier than most cuts of beef, AND you can feed 3-4 people with one steak. As for the snacks, whay, they should be miserable because mom's EMPLOYER pays her such a sh!tty wage that she needs to be on for stamps? Good car? Maybe she was fired or laid off the month after she bought it. Good hair and nails? Should she look raggedy while trying going on interviews? Jewelry? How do you know its real? Or maybe she tried to p**n it and they wouldn't offer a good price. YOU DON'T KNOW THIS WOMAN, mind your own business.

People sharing these stories only know a little snippet of the situation their probably exaggerating. I don't even know what the point of this is.
My favorite is coworkers complaining about not having any money, but as soon as VTO (voluntary time off [not paid]) is offered, they're out the door. You can forget about them volunteering for extra time/overtime.
