When we go to see a doctor, we can rest assured knowing that they are qualified to be treating illnesses, prescribing medicine and diagnosing diseases. They have completed at least a decade of education after high school and have endured rigorous training and testing to ensure that they know what they’re doing.

When we log onto the internet, however, anyone with a keyboard and an opinion can feel free to spout whatever medical misinformation they like, so we should take everything we read online with a grain of salt. Thankfully, there is one page that’s dedicated to calling out irresponsible and inaccurate medical advice that’s shared online: the Bad Medical Takes Twitter account.

We’ve gathered some of the most ridiculous, hilarious and alarming posts Bad Medical Takes has shared down below, so you too can enjoy hearing all of the wacky ideas ignorant people felt the need to share online. Be sure to upvote the claims you wish were posted satirically, and then let us know in the comments what the worst medical advice you’ve ever received was. And then if you’re interested in another Bored Panda article featuring medical takes that are definitely not doctor approved, you can find our last story on the same Twitter account right here.

So nobody's ever died in childbirth or from pregnancy complications? Nobody has ended their life from post-partum depression?

Isn’t one of the big causes for death in pregnant people in the US homicide? These Twitter twats forget a lot of risks.

I think I see the source of the confusion. All these foolish commenters thinking women count as people. Obviously when he says "nobody" he means no men. /s/

That's good news! We can remove the word 'matricide' from the dictionary to free up space for more words meaning 'confidently stupid'.

In case anyone here is confused, I'll clarify: everyone has a set of chromosomes, it's different between men and women - all women have two X chromosomes, whilst all men have an X chromosome and a Y chromosome. Whilst there are occasional mutations (some men have XXY instead of XY and so on), this is an immutable biological fact. What "High Marx" said was that women don't have the X chromosome, however it's actually the Y chromosome they're missing.

I am an EMT we see it all the time, the worst part is that it is not a quick death. It is insulin rationing leading to chronic high blood sugar leading to kidney failure. It is years of suffering.

I'm a type 1 Diabetic, fortunately I live in the UK so my insulin prescription is free at point of issue, if I lived in the US I'd have died from Hyperglycaemia many, many years ago through no fault of my own as I just would not have been able to afford something that costs very little to manufacture. The greed in the US healthcare* system is absolutely mind boggling to someone used to the NHS and having never had to pay a single penny for a prescription in my life, nor any visits to hospital (or my GP) *LOL US and Healthcare do not go, it's more No care.

Worked in property management for years. I was always the one sent to deal with "wellness checks." This is what happened: Stage one of the "Affordable Care Act" kicked in, and many insurance companies took disgusting advantage of the fact they could suddenly deny coverage for many very basic medications. Lots of people unalived in a very short period of time from lack of basic meds, which suddenly had become unaffordable for them here in the us. Insulin is one of those basic meds.

The Bad Medical Takes Twitter account initially launched in March 2020, which I can only assume came in response to all of the misinformation that was rapidly being spread about the COVID-19 virus. When the pandemic began, everyone on the internet suddenly turned into a medical professional, and with billions of desperate people around the world searching for hope and answers, false claims spread like wildfire.

But I can’t put all of the blame for bad medical advice running rampant online on the pandemic. The internet has been saturated with fake news long before 2020, so it only made sense for medical advice to make its way into the same category. But the difference between reading fake news about a politician and being told to shoot bleach into your veins is that the latter is extremely dangerous. So false medical claims deserve to be called out and shut down even more than your run-of-the-mill fake news.

They dont really teach sex ed in USA anymore. I was taught by someone who had a heath science degree and i still ended up reading " everything you want to know about sex but were afraid to ask". Now, they separate the boys and the girls and teach the girls " keep your legs closed, no one wants a used woman" . They teach the boys abstinance too, but not that it will decrease their value, but that they might catch something. They also teach masturbation is wrong too.

Gynecologist had explained that women roughly go through menopause around the same age as their mothers. My mother said she had her last period when she was 62. I remember being in my thirties and saying there is no way in the hell I want that to last that long.. luckily I had my last period at 57. Still roughly around the same general ages of my mother, and my aunt. We don't know when my great-grandmother had hers last, because she never told anybody

You might be wondering how anyone in the world could possibly believe the claims shared on this list in the first place, and I’ll be honest, I’m wondering too. So to try to gain some insight on the topic, I consulted an article from Medical News Today exploring just how these false claims are perceived as credible information. And it turns out that there are certain factors that can cause a person to be more or less susceptible to believing medical misinformation.

One 2021 study found that people with a lower education level and individuals who have less knowledge of healthcare issues are more likely to believe inaccurate medical claims. Also, people who have a lack of trust in the healthcare system are more inclined to view alternative treatments positively and more likely to believe false medical claims. The study also found that participants who believed one false medical claim were likely to fall for even more as well, so perhaps they are just more gullible than the average person.

The treatment IS simple. It's termination. First, it's not a fetus yet. If it was to that point, she'd be dead from a ruptured fallopian tube. Second, its not in the uterus yet. Third, it cannot be transplanted into the uterus. That's not a thing.

This guy is a conservative a*s-wipe, who loves to re-tweet BS from the likes of Lauren Boebert. So, there's that. I'd like to add: after a decade of infertility and miscarriage, my second pregnancy was ectopic, which ended up rupturing my fallopian tube. To anyone thinking that situation can be remedied and result in a healthy pregnancy, please pull your head out of your a*s - it can't.

Lead author of the study, Dr. Laura D. Scherer of the University of Colorado School of Medicine shed some light on the value of this study’s findings. “Inaccurate information is a barrier to good healthcare because it can discourage people from taking preventive measures to head off illness and make them hesitant to seek care when they get sick,” she explained. “Identifying who is most susceptible to misinformation might lend considerable insight into how such information spreads and provide us with new avenues for intervention.”

One of the most notable factors contributing to the spread of medical misinformation online is distrust in the healthcare system, and it might be becoming worse and worse over time. One survey reported that between 2017 and 2018, there was a 20% drop in the amount of trust the American public holds in their healthcare system. And globally, there was a 4% decrease in citizens’ trust in their healthcare systems. When people don’t trust the professionals, they start seeking outside, unverified information, which is likely informed by their own views and biases.

“We have witnessed a concerning shift over the last several decades where policy decisions seem to be driven by ideology and politics instead of facts and evidence,” American Medical Association president Dr. Patrice A. Harris said during a national address. “The result is a growing mistrust in American institutions — in science — and in the counsel of leading experts who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of evidence and reason.”

There has been a rise in bacterial infections in very newborn babies, especially the eyes. Most of those babies were born at home, using birthing tubs. Most people buy inflatable kiddie pools, don't clean and sanitize them properly. If they manage that, very few replace the water and sanitize it in the correct intervals. Now imagine all of those problems but at a beach where the only sanitizer is sunlight. Plus salt water in those sensitive little eyes...

I feel women who do this dramatic stuff think they’re a goddess giving birth. I wonder who they’re trying to impress, because giving birth isn’t an instagram competition. It’s more about them than the safety of their baby. Plus your body often has a different agenda than your mind. I did all the Lamaze and natural childbirth classes, and wanted a drug free birth. Then baby got stuck, I was in back labor, and I started projectile vomiting. I finally agreed to an epidermal, and my baby was born just fine. Pictures like this also make me chuckle because I wonder how glamorous it will look when baby keeps them up all night screaming, poopy diapers, spit up, etc. You know, normal baby behavior.

Another factor that might be exacerbating the issue of false medical claims online is the appetite that social media platforms have for fake news. While social media can be great a tool for sharing news and awareness of social issues, it can also be extremely hard to fact check what is being spread, and the more outlandish a claim is, the faster it will be circulated. In fact, one 2021 study from the NYU School of Global Health found that people who were primarily or exclusively using social media to track pandemic-related information were less likely to be practicing the most up-to-date public health safety practices. And another study from GoodRx found that being exposed to false medical claims online can negatively affect a patient’s health literacy.

Willfully. They are willfully ignorant. They lack empathy and cannot and will not conceive of a scenario outside their own world view and experience. Plus, if it gives them an opportunity to feel superior, that's a key aspect.

My mom is like this. So in that way I am very much looking forward to tell her in a few weeks that I've been diagnosed with asperger's. I am nearly 40 years old and my mom talks about autism and adhd as if it's something lazy parents label their kids in order to let them roam free and never teach them how to be polite and a lovable person (my mom hates everybody so to her everybody is unlovable persons). Oh, and when my grandma lived and one of her friends got a severe depression she simply could not understand how her friend got so lazy. Because, you know, "depression is just lazy people trying to get away with being lazy". So.... I never told her about my depressions. She wouldn't even look at my cousin when she got treatment for depression. My grandma was super cool and we all loved her to bits.... but she was also very much an a-hole. Sometimes more an a-hole than a loving old woman. She was super complicated, actually.... ok I'll stop this rant. Lol.

Inaccurate medical information being circulated online is not only relating to COVID-19 and the vaccines being used to prevent it. Users might find misinformation about anything from smoking and drug use to claims about other vaccines, like the HPV vaccine, causing various health issues. Thankfully, many users don’t actually trust the claims they see, as only 6% of people said they trust information about COVID on social media sites in one survey, but it is still concerning how rapidly these claims spread. In fact, medical misinformation sometimes makes it to 87% of users’ feeds on social media sites. Even if only 5% of these people believe the claims, that could lead to devastating consequences.

I can see where this could stem; women produce more antibodies during pregnancy which can make it harder to match with a patient (Source: https://www.blood.co.uk/news-and-campaigns/the-donor/call-for-more-men-to-give-blood/). But making a statement like this without a source or even proper clarification is wrong and can be dangerous.

Yeah, they do. High school athletes can. Whether substance abuse (including doping) is involved, or they just run outta luck, or have a specific heart rhythm issue... they die. Apparently they have no idea what a heart attack is. The heart itself isn't the issue. It's a lack of blood flow to the arteries that cause damage to the heart. Enough damage, the heart stops.

The confusion here is the common misuse of the term heart attack instead of cardiac arrest. They are not the same thing. The media often confuse the terms. Young athletic people needing resuscitation i.e. footballers during a game are typically having a cardiac arrest due to structural or genetic changes to their hearts leading to life-threatening arrhythmia (these are often triggered by strenuous exertion). A heart attack is a myocardial infarction caused by blockage or plaque rupture of a coronary artery.

In the last 5 years two 18yr olds died in my country, because they catched an infection and needed to take meds. They thought they beat the disease and went to training. In both cases they had an inflammation of their heart muscle, because their bodies still fought the disease. Both were aspiring football (soccer) players.

So what are public health agencies supposed to do to limit the spread of false claims online? Is it their responsibility to monitor social media? Well, it’s a delicate issue. “Social media can also be volatile: false information, sometimes maliciously created, spreads rapidly,” the Frontiers in Public Health authors wrote. “Thus, measures to counter misinformation and disinformation on social media channels during an emergency are necessary. Given that government censorship can deeply aggravate already existing mistrust, measures other than content removal is needed, as the public shares and reacts positively to factual information, especially if posted by public health agencies.”

In 2021, US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued an advisory on medical misinformation, calling for actual healthcare professionals to use their own social media platforms to cut through the false claims and spread truth online. He also asked that healthcare agencies partner with trusted community members like church leaders and clinicians to make sure that the public hears accurate information from people they trust. He also noted that this issue cannot be solved overnight. Combatting medical misinformation online will be a long-term effort, so hopefully, over time, the public’s health literacy will be increased. And false claims online will become a thing of the past.

It's a click bait headline. To be fair on this one, the author (a doctor) is in favor of low cost insulin and the title is misleading. The gist of the article "Because insulin prices and efficacy levels are decreasing, doctors are forced daily to decide between the best medication for our patients and the medication that our patients can afford," Dr. Rose wrote.

Makes no sense. People are dying now. Exactly what are these "newer, better treatments" that apparently don't involve insulin? I'm sure they'll be even more affordable than insulin is now, right?

Metformin. Metformin is usually the first medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes. ... SGLT2 inhibitors. ... GLP-1 agonists. ... Sulphonylureas. ... Pioglitazone. ... Gliptins (DPP-4 inhibitors) ... These are the current excellent treatrments for type 2 diabetes. Type 1 is insulin only.

Actually, insulin is the 'second (or last) line' of treatment for type 2 diabetes. The main ones - tablets - try to stimulate the pancreas to make more natural insulin. Once you start giving/taking insulin in the longer term, the pancreas packs up completely, and you have a 'worse' variation. Taking metformin (plus other similar meds) plus diet and exercise, is far more likely to keep you stable and stave off the nasty complications than insulin. In the US, I understand that ALL diabetes treatments are expensive, but in the UK 56 x 500mg metformin tablets are £13.99. If you have cheap insulin but expensive metformin, people will not learn to manage the diabetes and yes, are more likely to die. So, strongly disagree. I quote from the actual article "But for the 90 percent of Americans with diabetes who have type 2, it should not routinely be the first-, second-, or even third-line treatment. The reasons for this are many:" etc

But for those of us with Type 1, or Type 2 that has progressed to the point that their pancreas can no longer supply the same amount of insulin that their body needs, Insulin is currently the ONLY way we can stay alive, without giving ourselves Insulin, either by multiple daily injections or via a continuous insulin pump, we WILL either end up in Hospital with a a condition known as Diabetic Ketoacidosis (really painful and can cause permanent damage as it turns the blood acidic) or we will die, neither option is something we want.

This doesn't belong here. I've read the article and he has a good point. There are better treatments coming. We need to focus on making those affordable too or many people on insulin will be left behind with what will soon be considered substandard treatment for them. If you want more info read the article. Also Peter Attia MD has a great podcast The Drive that hits on this topic with active research scientists quite often in molecular detail. I'm really surprised that there are so many commenters on Bored Panda bashing this without looking into it at least a little bit, usually this group is pretty well educated, but there's a lot to learn about out there. It's exciting to think there may be better things coming for these patients.

I agree that the article is being misrepresented. But the real issue is that whatever medication is the best one for a person's type of diabetes should be affordable, regardless of whether it is insulin or a newer medication.

This article was about people with type 2 diabetes who are not insulin dependent (witch is technically most people with "diabetes".) The argument is by making insulin cheaper people who have other, sometimes better drug options will be more likely to be just prescribe insulin. Its my understanding that people who are type 2 are at higher risk of adverse side effects that type 1. Type 1 diabetics need insulin to survive and the rationing of insulin has killed a lot of people. But the the article writer was arguing that b/c significantly more people have type 2 over type 1 more people overall could die. What is not address is the core issue, Dr.s prescribing the most affordable drug, is b/c US pharmaceutical companies are allowed to charge astronomically high prices for meds that cost pennies to make for huge mark ups.

Extract from Wikipedia : Hexagonal water, also known as gel water, structured water, cluster water, H3O2 or H3O2 is a term used in a marketing scam that claims the ability to create a certain configuration of water that is better for the body. The term "hexagonal water" refers to a cluster of water molecules forming a hexagonal shape that supposedly enhances nutrient absorption, removes metabolic wastes, and enhances cellular communication, among other things. The scam takes advantage of the consumer's limited knowledge of chemistry, physics, and physiology. Gel water is referenced in the version of the hoax in which plants or animal fascia are said to create or contain a "fourth phase" of water with an extra hydrogen and an extra oxygen, despite the simple reality that this compound is neither water, nor stable—in other words it doesn't exist in any practical sense

These three realities DO NOT exist in their country. Then there's the hair thing, I mean, look at him, it's the 'Emperor's New Clothes' of hair.

As a matter of fact, i studied societal psychology and many mental illnesses are expessed differently though cultural lens. For instance in a lot of cultures, an eating disorders may affect the litteral muscles of person. In some asian countries for instance, whereas in north america the ill person eats but purges, the asian person litterally cannot eat. So even if there is no "word" for that illness, or it "doesn't exist", the fact this person is NOT okay is irrefuyable, but the symptoms may vary. Mental illnesses are so fascinating and they are very hard to identify. North Korea doesn't have depression? They do, it's just called "that dude killed himself". They may not recognise it, culturally speaking.

What really struck me about this is the last line, which is complete and utter horseshit. To kill a demon, you have to name it. Naming something pins it down, gives it boundaries, makes it finite. To name something is to take power over it.

If a child is beginning to get caught up in gender ideology, the best thing to do IS to get them off the internet. Get them away from the groomers, the echo chambers, the endless insistence that they are "trans" or some other ridiculous, nonsensical and delusional label that impressionable kids adapt. However, I believe they should see medical professionals and / or therapists - but NOT the one that will affirms the child's delusion. They should explore underlying issues - history of sexual abuse, substance abuse, mental illness, the like. Shame that most therapists that don't immediately affirm delusion are fired and berated.

And this is where we see how transphobes are similar in attitudes to homophobes, who also insisted for centuries that homosexuality was a mental illness rather than just another mode of being.

Wasn't there a police officer in the US who touched something in a suspect's car and got a nearly fatal dose of fentanyl poisoning? It was captured by the other officer's bodycam. They had to narcan him twice? Although I do concede that there may be a psychogenic aspect to some poisonings.

My partner uses fentanyl patches for pain and has never acted like that. The fentanyl is absorbed slowly over three days. It is not an instant transfer the second it touches your skin.

This garbage is everywhere. There's even a video of a police officer staggering around complaining he was poisoned by fentanyl. Doesn't happen. Fentanyl patches are a thing, where the drug is absorbed through the skin; but it isn't enough to poison a person.

This comment is almost as stupid as the post. It is totally enough to poison a person. Those patches have to be handled and used very carefully or the patient can die. If it gets torn, worn, ingested or if a young child gets ahold of one, they could die from overdose. Yes, the cop video is exaggerated but that stuff is lethal if handled wrong

Actually.... there ARE Fentanyl patches made that are to be absorbed thru the skin; many of these drugs can be and are produced to do this! We had to be super careful of the Fentanyl ones in the hospital. Heck, I even heard of a poor pregnant woman who was reported to children's services for doing meth; turned out her landlord never told her the former tenants were cooking... she was exposed via environmental. She never did the drug. If and only if, someone stored their patches in a wallet with their money (you don't do that, but people are dumb), could I see this happening; those patches are meant to easily cross the skin barrier, so any residue from them will be fast acting.

What you call "aggressively and inhumanly abused/traumatized to the point of giving up on one's gender identity" is what some may call "telling a girl that she is a girl and not a Trigender Non-Binary Pansexual Quausiromantic Chipmunk." As well as this, there are a variety of studies showing that if you do not affirm a child's insistence that they are of the opposite sex then they will just flat-out grow out of it. It happened to my sister. In Year 4 of Primary School, she wanted to be a boy and wished to be called by male pronouns. We talked to her about it and it turns out she just simply wanted to play football with the boys and they were not letting her because she was a girl. Likewise, a lot of young kids believe that if someone wears a dress then they're actually a girl, that's why a bunch of young boys say they're girls if they just simply like the colour pink or wearing skirts and other stereotypically feminine things.

The latest research shows that the theory of low serotonin levels being a cause of depression is false. This doesn't mean that SSRIs don't work, it just means that we don't understand the mechanism behind them like we thought we did.

Yes. Unfortunately many have seized on the part of the research that found they don't increase serotonin levels and declared that that means they don't work, when the research specifically finds that they do work, just not in the way they thought. Sorry, I know that's what you're saying - I just wanted to emphasize that the research found that they do work.

Makes me sad to see the scientific community's absolutely heroic effort to come up with covid vaccines reduced in this way. It was such a monumental success that resulted from the efforts of so many unsung heroes, but so many people have reduced it to something Fauci himself whipped up to ... exert control for some reason? Not that Fauci doesn't deserve a ton of credit for his work on this and for his entire career of service to the cause of human health, but it's maddening how so many black and white shallow thinkers reduce and simplify things, usually in some type of blame game while laughing as if they're smarter than everyone else and "see" the big picture.

"Trans Women" are men, "Trans men" are women. The definition of a woman is an adult human female - female meaning denoting to or of the sex that should have the capacity to produce offspring. "Trans women" are NOT of the sex that can produce offspring - the female sex - and therefore are men. Likewise goes for "Trans men", aka delusional women.

This does not mean that a particular someone is your soul mate or even sociologically, emotionally, intellectually, etc compatible; just that the two who found each others' odours palatable would have the highest chance of a genetically healthy child.

no really, this is a real, and repeatable, double blind study where the woman's preferred partner's smell is perceived differently when the woman is on and while off the pill.

Maybe this is good advice if your sole interest in life is procreating with the most biologically compatible person (assuming this is true), but it does give short shrift to every other consideration a woman may have in choosing who they want to partner with. Humans have the gift of reason and it's a useful gift.

Not sure I'd want to be in any relationship where I found my partner stank. Was seeing a guy once and his natural scent was so disgusting to me I couldn't handle it. Took about an hour after he took a shower for the scent to resurface 🤢 He's had gfs since me so I know it was just me who smells it

I get why this is included, it fits the brief, but come on BP, do you really want us to laugh and poke fun at the under pressure mother of an autistic child? Not cool.

I can’t help but wonder if this person has been reading stuff from Autisim Speaks. The problematic terminology used seems similar. Edit just to say that as someone with many friends on the spectrum and who’s awaiting testing myself, the way some people treat autisim as a “disease” makes my skin crawl. It’s literally just a term for when someone’s brain works differently (hense the terms “Neurodivergent” and “Neurotypical”, though the former doesn’t just apply to autisim. Sorry for going on too much)

I think the movement toward acceptance for neurodivergent people of all types is a wonderful thing. I also understand why parents of kids on the most severe end of the autism spectrum would want a cure. I personally know one autism family that supports Autism Speaks. Their young adult son is in his early 20's. He must be brought to adult daycare daily. He speaks in 1-2 word sentences at at most. He will never have a job, he will never live independently. He has no friends. He has seriously injured his mother on several occasions, because he has toddler like meltdowns but is a 6ft tall man. They love their son dearly, and have spent his entire life trying to provide him with the education and therapies that will help him live the fullest life possible.

Well, sometimes it’s a personality trait, sometimes a gift, sometimes it’s a disability. It just depends on what strengths and weaknesses you get, and the intensity of them. Sometimes our needs really do make neurotypical parents lives hard. Sometimes we become innovators who make everyone’s lives better. But hating us, and wanting us gone, will not make the world a better place. Neurotypicals may not admit it, but their antisocial behavior towards us is a burden. It keeps us from becoming the best we can be. I think I know now the root cause of autism, but I also finally see it’s directly related to the root cause of neurotypicality. This knowledge should be used to enhance neurodiversity, not erase it. What’s seemingly convenient is not always right. It can be hard to be an autism parent. I won’t deny it. But acceptance eases the worst part of it, so you can see the best part.

I don’t care what’s politically correct in autism politics, because more important is doing the right thing, both for individuals, and society. Do we need radical acceptance? YES! But does autism need a cure? Not a cure to erase us, but a treatment to optimize the strengths and reduce the impact of the weaknesses. Our life has value, but our enjoyment of it matters. Those who want to destroy us are barking up the wrong tree. Enhancing us is the better answer to our problems. Imagine if relying on our unhindered strengths, we used our innovation prowess to bring humanity to a whole different level?

After reading that, I don't think her child has Autism. They have her for a mom.
