Yea. One of the several reasons I ended things with my last partner and got divorced is that if I ever had trouble that would lead me to needing to talk to him about my problem(s), or me being upset, it then immediately become about how terrible his life is because I'm so upset and it upsets him so much. He couldn't just be there for me, he had to turn it around to me having to shove things down and now sorry him and console him because my problems were so hard for him. -_-

When my dad died my uncle (mum's brother) and aunt came to visit us. My uncle hugged my mum and my aunt hugged my two elder sisters and they all walked past me and my younger sister without a glance. Never forgotten that and I'm the same age range. People can really and truly be inconsiderate bstards.

The people in charge of the system are evil. Politicians get lifetime health insurance with the job and between that and legalized bribery, they have no incentive to change anything. They got theirs. Make them pay for their own healthcare and outlaw lobbying and watch how fast we get universal health care. We'd have it in under a year.

It's even worse once you retire and go on Medicare (not Medicaid, that pays better).

It's not U.S. healthCARE , it's the insurance companies that are making people's lives miserable. Doctors are struggling to practice medicine these days, they aren't being allowed to.

Especially United Health Care. Stay away!

As an American who's lived in Belgium for 20 years, I have to agree. We are so lucky to have very affordable healthcare. Our co-pay at a regular dr. appt is €4,00. We both had hip replacements (I'm just over 70) and our out of pocket maximum is about €750/year for both of us.

Actually ALL insurance is evil. They only look out for themselves and each other. It’s a racket that should totally face RICO charges!!!

Universal healthcare wouldn't benefit the huge insurance companies and HMOs, who would then stop contributing vast sums of money to members of Congress. Another horrendous situation caused by the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court. (That decision, by the way, granted first amendment rights to corporations, on the grounds that they are "people".)

The US government DOES know this, but it would involve raising taxes. And yes, the increased taxes would actually be, for any individual, less than they're paying an insurance company, but .... Meanwhile, if you're elected to Congress even once, you and your dependents have lifetime, full healthcare coverage, no deductible, no limits, no pre-auths, etc. The whole problem would be fixed in no time if Congress were forced to go on standard Medicare.

Ok, I somewhat understand but hear me out. Not all disabled have the same level of disability. So why lump all disabled into the assumption that they will all be "lower functioning/less contributing?" Before I sold my practice, I had 2 young men with down syndrome working with me. Their mother came in and asked if there was anything they could do as "busy work," & I said absolutely! But I insisted that they be paid the same as my other staff, even though their mother didn't think it necessary. They did all the laundry & dishes (a large veterinary hospital/grooming/boarding facility uses a ton of laundry/dishes) and they were amazing! Always on time, hard workers, SO compassionate & loving to all the animals. Clients would even ask if they were working because they knew their pets were going to get so many snuggles if they were. Just because someone is disabled doesn't mean they shouldn't be valued & we shouldn't assume that what they contribute "isn't that valuable" to a company.

In the U.S. companies can actually get a tax credit for hiring disabled people. I know several companies that use that credit (to the point of only hiring within the benefit range.) Most of these jobs don't pay enough as it is, so letting them get away with paying even less is unconscionable.

I've seen disabled absolutely outshine normal fabled in a work place. Why? Because they have to constantly prove they are worthy because people like you sweep them with b******t like that.

But its still their time and an equal level of effort regardless. They should make equal pay as anyone else.

Here in Italy every business need to employ a person with disabled every X employees (I think 45). Guess what? They find something for them every time and no business ever went under for a couple of people...

Disabled people can be as efficient as the abled folks, depending on the job. You can be physically incapable and sharp as a laser mentally. You can be slower to learn but terrific at repetitive tasks. Some people have a long learning curve but become amazingly efficient. Many folks with disabilities (probably from necessity) learn patience and compassion which can be a great asset. Disabled people are not useless. And, if they work, they deserve the same living age the rest of us should get if we work.

There is so much wrong with this statement. First you already assume disabled people will be less productive - can you back it up with data? Because I've never seen any on it. Disability comes with many flavours - from being inconvenient to requiring daily assistance. How would a cook be affected by a hearing impaired or a call center employee by a stoma bag? Instead of low wages, there should be mechanism encouraging employment of disabled people - e.g. tax deduction for the the employers..in the long run it's easier and cheaper for the state to provide an incentive over dealing with mental health issues coming from being marginalized as a disabled person Noone - teenager working over vacation, parent workign part time or a disable person should be paid below the market value. Otherwise it's exploitation

Here's a fact: a person's worth is not determined by their productivity, nor is whether they deserve to survive.

I guess every person with disability is very good at some things and very bad at others... exactly like the rest of us. I don't think companies should be allowed to pay them less, as if they had less rights. That was (and still is) the sad excuse to pay women lower salaries then men's: lower productivity, less commitment to the company, all that s**t. If they were not productive enough they would not be hired. It's big business for some companies, or do you think they hire them out of kindness and social justice? If the governments want to encourage companies to hire people with disabilities, they should reduce the taxes the companies pay, or give them some other perks, depending on the country, but every worker should get at least the minimum. That's why it's called *minimum*. Paying them less means they are considered third class citizens, or lesser humans. And they are not.

Are you kidding me? Disability doesn't mean someone with a disability has the inability to work and work hard. They're very hard workers, full of ambitions and eager to do a good job. They're most vulnerable and should be protected from exploitation. It's not true, at all. Got my blood boiling now. I have disabled co-workers of varying disabilities and severities. I work in a warehouse with a mute lady, an intellectually disabled man and some people have chronic ailments. They all get treated the same as everyone else, work hard as anyone else and get paid the same as everyone else. They're not some brownie point tokens for employers.

Yes, it's more for the disabled person to get out of the house, get a sense of accomplishment doing small tasks, that don't actually carry any responsibility, or value to the firm. Lots of disabled people would be happy to have a "job" for a few hours, while still on full disabled benefits. Unfortunately its hard to distinguish between the generous business owners, and the ones who would really exploit the workers.

That's when we, as a society, come together and support the hiring of disabled people. Yes, it will cost us an extra Dollar yearly in taxes, but likely we'll save that Dollar in some other way. I can already hear the chorus of "but I am able bodied and I can't find a job" or "Someone with Down Syndrome took my job". We love punching down, don't we?

There are already major tax breaks for hiring people with disabilities. They amount to money in the employers pocket but do not take anything away from the workers.

If you have to bribe companies with the right to pay below the minimum wage, then there is something wrong with the companies.

Most disabled people I've crossed paths with and worked with were actually some of the most optimistic, determined people who put everything they had into succeeding despite their circumstances.

I can tell a whole lot about not only the kind of person you are but the kind of worker you are, and I wouldn't hire you.

In Australia, often workplaces get a fee from disability employment agencies for hiring people with disabilities, so the person gets a full wage and the agency pays the gap between what others earn and they get paid.

I’ve been a cancer survivor for a decade as of this writing, and an epilepsy survivor for almost 3 years. I still manage to get tasks done at least just as efficiently as my coworkers- without sacrificing quality.

Using stereotypes, generalizations, and assumptions to support decisions is the issue here. It’s not about the pay. Every individual deserves to be treated equally, and with respect. If individuals are treated as “less than” then their performance scores will most likely reflect the same.

That's why, in Denmark we have something called Flex Job. This is aimed at people with any kind of disability. Employers pay a percentage of their wages, and the state pays the rest. This is how a fair society works.

Tell me you don't know about disabilities without telling me. I'm disabled. I'm not going to get paid less than my co-workers because of it. Take your abelist s**t out of here. (https://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/AdultListings.htm here's a list of all the disabilities. Because it seems you know about maybe 2 of them)

Minimum wage is minimum wage; it isn't about worth, it's about affording the cost of living. If you have more productive and hard working employees, then you pay THOSE people more. The problem with this goes back to corporations not paying people for what they're worth. Minimum wage SHOULD be an easy task. It's the freaking minimum.

I've hired soooo many perfectly able bodied/minded people that turned out to be as useful as snake mittens. How much worse could a disabled person that actually wants to work perform???

I remember this debate - the picture and title don't give a clear idea. Due to a lot of closures of remploy (factories well equipped and suited to employ a massive range of abilities) lots of places in the UK had little sensible opportunities to be paid for what you do rather than how long it took for many who appreciated that model. By allowing any time for a task, some disabled people felt the pressure was off and work less stressful. It would mean a person with disabilities might even seem a better option, as more likely to stay with a job long term. Unfortunately, most agreed the potential to exploit vulnerable people was going to be too hard to prevent. Its sad - no idea why remploy closed down.

The downside to any kind of minimum wage (for anybody) is that everybody's value can be compared to other people, and the typical employer wants the best person they can get for whatever they pay them. The reality is that even at the pathetic $7.25/hr current minimum wage there are plenty of people who aren't worth that much based on the other people that are available. The disabled people who work for less than minimum wage are mostly people who can't get by on their own, and are receiving some kind of public assistance that supplements the low wages they're paid. In many cases that includes free housing in a group home. Rent in my area (about 100 miles north of NYC) starts at $1500 or more, so compared to 4 people sharing a place free housing is worth about $10 an hour for a 40 hour work week.
