In case you didn't know, 26 January is the national day of Australia. And what could be a more beautiful way to celebrate the occasion than by honoring all the little things that make this country the beautiful, interesting and absolutely bizarre place that it is. That’s A Blue Ring Octopus, Whose Venom Can Result In Death Within Minutes
A good question - the bright yellow colour and the blue rings aren't usually visible unless it feels frightened or threatened. It's a 'leave me alone or I will poison you' warnng. The octopus is yellow and the rings are visible here, that poor octopus is terrified and about to sting them.

To be fair, if this guy is careful then maybe the little guy won't bite. Still dangerous ofc, but venom is only harmful if its injected in to your bloodstream through a bite. That's why you could drink venom and be fine, unless something is wrong and there's a cut somewhere in your body.
Actually, drinking venom can be risky, because some creatures (like the Asian Giant Hornet) has venom that burns through skin. If it burns through your stomach or esophagus, you may be injured and possibly die. Also it's venom

I remember this from last year sometime. I believe there's a video of this, too. Just a simple case of not knowing what you're playing with. Luckily, it didn't bite.
I am guessing he doesn't know what he was holding at the time, If he is still alive, he should know by now, don't pick up everything that looks pretty that is in the water.
Extremely venemous. And the blue rings only show when it's angry. Maybe 2 or 3 deaths a year? You DON'T PICK THEM UP! We do have lots of dangerous animals but generally, if you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. I suspect that all of our wildlife combined kill fewer people than bears in America/Canada.

The scary thing is that the bites of these deadly creatures are painless, so you won't even know that you're about to die.

fun fact: in austria's middle school englisch books, there is a unit about the blue ring ocotpus and how dangerous it is. every 13 year old austrian knows the blue ring octopus! :D

as long as you don't scare or try to hurt them....as usual with animals.
And it's flashing its warning colours... Note that there's no anti-venom for the blue ringed octopus. Treatment involves artificial respiration until the paralysis wears off - maybe 24 hours - that is, if you can signal for help before total paralysis overcomes you.
I thought that its venom was a neurotoxin , and if you got bitten whilst you were in water you'd drown. But still, I imagine it's still nasty even if you're not drowning
Strictly speaking, you asphyxiate because you're paralysed. Slipping under the water unable to breathe is not really drowning, but certainly nasty.

It's funny as an Australian seeing all these non-Australians freak out over all this stuff. For real, the chances of seeing the actual dangerous animals is pretty slim, I live on a property in rural Queensland and I rarely see any of the actual dangerous animals.

I feel like ireland is the polar opposite. It's cold, raining, and our spiders are tiny, also, no snakes.
No snakes in Ireland and it's cold, if I move I'll gladly come to live there. I don't support the high heat in summer and don't want to a have a snake in my toilet.

I actually wanted to visit Australia. but now I have seen those photos that Australia I actually don't want to visit anymore. from snakes, hot weather, many bugs and even those green things. look. I will stay in Athens! I have made my decision
Someone should have showed a picture of that scary as hell funnel web spider! I couldn't go to sleep at night unless it was in a clear locked box!!!
I wonder is australian jails are full of criminal animals cause surely there not going to let them animals get away with the theft and the breaking and entering gotta show dem animals whose boss

To be hones, the show Border Patrol is a much bigger deterrent than the bugs / other scary wildlife. The show makes it seem as if they think that there are 100% good guys in A and 100% bad guys everywhere else, (You took LSD once fifteen years ago? We might want to hold you back for half a day to discuss if we risk the downfall of our nation by letting you stay for your holiday), I quite like snakes, so I would need somebody to follow me and say "NO, do NOT try to pet it idiot, it might kill you"
