“Unsafe For Morons But Safe For Everyone Else”: 40 Examples Of Architecture And Design That Don’t Prioritize Safety
Architecture and design are fascinating topics. There’s a seemingly never-ending discussion about the right balance between function and form, and we’ve recently written about the importance of ordinary beauty, as well as the disturbing trend of design homogenization. So naturally, we believe that aesthetics and artistic expression are definitely worth protecting. Here’s the issue though: should aesthetics trump safety?
To help you ponder this question, we’re featuring some of the very best posts from the r/ArchitectureForAdults subreddit (and a select few from elsewhere). It’s a niche online community that has a very unique perspective on the world. The members share photos and videos of truly gorgeous architectural and engineering designs that flirt with the line between safe and unsafe.
Scroll down and upvote your fave pics! Let us know which of these designs wowed you the most… and which scared the bejesus outta ya! If you’re anything like me and have a not-so-subtle fear of heights and falling, then you might want to hang on to your hats, Pandas. You’re about to get a big dose of vertigo. Go on ahead, I’ll be right with you, I just need to collect myself for a bit.
Bored Panda got in touch with an urban planner and designer from Sweden to get her opinion about the r/ArchitectureForAdults subreddit. She was kind enough to share her thoughts about safety and security in public spaces, as well as why the sub's tagline might not work in real life.

I assure you he HATES it with a passion. Primarily because he's gotten a flat faceful while watching the road runner speed off into the distance of the painting. Which makes selective sense given that they're both cartoons.

Load More Replies...The Swedish urban planner and designer asked Bored Panda to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of her job but was otherwise happy to shed some light on the entire debate regarding safety and security. Bored Panda was interested to get her opinion as to where safety lies in the hierarchy of priorities for someone like her.
"Safety is self-evidently a top priority to an urban designer. I doubt this hierarchy is ever questioned besides the occasional self-centered architect and designer who de-prioritize safety in favor of an original design. However, if a space is to be usable and livable, at least a threshold of safety compliance has to be achieved," she told us.
At the same time, the expert noted that there may be instances where governments might decide that, unfortunately, safety 'should' be overlooked for a "more cost-effective choice."
"Each government establishes and enforces safety guidelines that the built environment must follow," the expert told us, adding that the discussion then moves on to what safety entails to different governments and societies.

"The concept of safety and security in urban design conversations usually primarily refers to crime prevention (for example, decent night-time lighting, CCTV cameras), transportation infrastructure safety ( traffic accident prevention, walkability), or more social aspects like livability (how the environment can foster a healthier and more inclusive society)."
According to the urban planner, small-scale objects like railings on a bridge or warning signs "usually follow straightforward building regulations and do not generate much debate."
The expert stressed that the perception of whether or not something is 'safe enough' will differ from government to government and society to society.

All These Houses Are Connected By A Pool
On the one hand, this is really cool. On the other, maintenance and changing water must be hell, and stupidly wasteful.

The urban planner and designer also added that she sees an issue with the tagline that the r/ArchitectureForAdults subreddit uses, about how only 'morons' would feel unsafe. "Adults, too, can suffer from clumsiness. Even intelligent adults are not safe from this curse."

When I was a kid, my grandparents lived in this little fishing village about 2 hours outside of Rio de Janeiro. To get to the village you would have to cross a stream that was about 2 meters deep. There was no bridge, instead there were two wooden planks. In the village there was a bar, and grocery store. Both of them needed to get deliveries, and sure enough large trucks were driving over the planks. Visibility for those trucks was poor, so villagers would help out by shifting the planks so the drivers could just go straight across. FYI, I checked on google maps, there's a paved bridge now, and the village has grown significantly. But I remember trying to get the planks just right to help the drivers out.

Paddled across this a couple of times and being in a kayak or canoe was nowhere near as worrying as steering a narrow boat across. In the kayak you are below the level of the edge, stood on the back of a narrow boat you can easily step off the boat and plummet to your death.
At the time of writing, r/ArchitectureForAdults had exactly 3,761 members. We hope that the community grows and expands over time because the content they share is very interesting. It’s also good mental prep for when you go traveling abroad!
You can’t expect every single place to have the exact same safety standards that you’re used to. You have to focus and not wander about daydreaming when you’ve got tiny stone steps in front of you, railings that don’t even come up to your knees, and double-decker buses that you can just hop on by grabbing the pole.
From the perspective of r/ArchitectureForAdults, we shouldn’t have to sacrifice beauty and ingenuity for the sake of safety. The subreddit claims that all of these designs are “unsafe for morons but safe for everyone else.”
Though, personally, I feel like it’s ridiculous to have railings too low. Safety and beauty can coexist, you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice one for the other, I feel. And, to be honest, just because a design is unique doesn't automatically make it beautiful.

Load More Replies...Whatever your feelings towards safety, you can’t deny that there are certain minimalist trends sweeping the world. Designs are starting to look and feel homogenized. Not just in architecture and in corporate art but also in urban spaces, as well as corporate logos. Everything’s starting to feel a bit too functional, with less emphasis on the form.
Consumer psychology specialist Matt Johnson, a professor at Hult International Business School and Harvard University, very recently explained to us why we’re seeing a certain level of design homogenization, especially in terms of brand logos. He saw a few reasons for this trend that has led to fewer unique designs being used.
“The first is that as we move towards a more digital environment, there’s a need to make brand logos as legible and as easy to identify as possible. The consumer’s attention is strained even more in the online world, so logos can’t afford to be disfluent or challenging to process,” he told Bored Panda earlier.

“Secondly, there also may be a growing realization of the ‘fluency effect’: the relatively robust behavioral science phenomenon that the more fluent a font is written in, the more likable and trustworthy the message. As more brands become familiar with this phenomenon, they may want to test new, more fluently written logos to capitalize on this effect,” the professor told us.

This Architect Accidentally Built A Death Ray That Melts Cars And Fries Eggs... Again
If I remember correctly the first time was in Las Vegas, where the death ray hit an area around some pool (hotel?) and welded people's molten flip flop soles to the floor. The one in London was dubbed "walkie scorchie" for its brick like aesthetics and the ability to fry eggs /partly melt at least one door mat and a Jaguar's dashboard. Many architects like to see themselves as artists with visions - practicality is for plebs.

The Cannonball Loop Waterslide, A Slide So Dangerous It Was Shutdown Almost Immediately After Opening
Everyone I know who grew up in NJ always adds "Good times!" to "Action Park". Apparently it was good fun if you didn't end the day in the hospital.
Load More Replies...You gotta watch the doc called Class Action Park. As someone who grew up in NJ and knew of the lore of this park, I definitely didn't realize just HOW bad it all was. Basically run lawlessly by undertrained teens. Adult oversight was sparse, if any. Several preventable deaths occurred there. As much as I love talking about the craziness that was action park (and was even brought there as a kid), the interview with the family of one of victims was so heart-wrenching. The Cannonball was not opened to the public for long (or at all? Can't remember. But it's in the doc), but employees tried it. When they eventually dismantled the slide, they found teeth stuck in the top of the loop. ::vomit::
If memory serves, I think the loop was open for about a month.
Load More Replies...Christ! "Action Park's popularity went hand-in-hand with a reputation for poorly designed rides, under-trained and under-aged staff, intoxicated guests and staff, and a consequently poor safety record. At least six people are known to have died as a result of mishaps on rides at the park (...) Little effort was made by state regulators to address those issues, despite the park's history of repeat violations. GAR's management resorted to illegal financial schemes to keep itself solvent, which led to indictments of its executives, some of whom, like founder Gene Mulvihill, pled guilty to some charges."
My in-house New Jersey-ite who experienced Action Park in person says that they avoided severe oversight because it brought in huge money to the area in visitors, taxes, etc. People apparently came from New England, New York, Pennsylvania, etc. to visit Action Park and spent money. The gov't officials of the time didn't want to upset that cash cow. She also points out that the Wave Pool avoided the scrutiny and regulations of a "ride" because it was labelled a "pool" and thus only needed lifeguards...who would rescue multiple people pretty much every day. Despite all this, she says "I'd go again in a heartbeat". I am truly SMH at that.

“While this logo trend is seen across a wide array of industries, there may be only one or two within each industry that may make this change, since if everyone did, they would not be differentiating as well. There may be a broader implication of this: if companies begin to recognize that consumers, at least in digital environments, prefer more basic logo designs, brands will rush to be the first in their industry to do so to plant their flag first. While all brands want to be at the razor’s edge of consumer preferences, no brand wants to be seen as the copycat of their competitor,” Professor Johnson noted.

Very funny.
“I imagine the general trend will persist, especially in the digital environment. If it turns out to be the case that more basic, legible logos are more suitable for online preferences, we may also move to a system where each major brand has at least two distinct brand logos: one in the digital world, and one for the physical world. This is already happening to a certain extent since many brands that have gone to a more basic font haven’t completely jettisoned their originals and retained them for specific uses,” the consumer psychology specialist said.
A Footbridge With Knee-High Sides
Or do, but crawl across ...... Don't, whatever you do, do what I did in Winchester (UK) when I was 25 ish and go for a great night out with friends, sit on a bridge over the fast flowing (and very cold as it was February) River Itchen whilst they were having a smooch a little way back, lean back and sober up very, very quickly as I hit the water. Thankfully, my best mate had a menswear shop in town, so I stripped off, dried up and chose replacement clothes - sadly this was at 2 in the morning and understandably the two policemen who turned up whilst I was half naked in the shop took some convincing that nothing nefarious was going on ....... I was a Captain in the Army at the time. Happy days.

Load More Replies...I don’t think this belongs here. These steps are actually practical because these step wells are mostly dug below the surface level and the water level fluctuates highly depending on the season. The water could very well cover all the steps and reach the top during rainy season or be at the very bottom during summers. Plus the steps on all sides ensure that a large number of people are able to access it at the same time without the danger of a stampede considering these sometimes supported entire villages during severe droughts. I have lived near one of these and they are surprisingly easy to climb up and down.
Considering when these were built, compared to all the other dangers people faced these were relatively speaking …safe. There were tigers in those trees! And of course the multitude of wars, famine and diseases. The people that decided that these should be built really helped the local populations by giving them a source of year round water.
I said that about another pic...but I agree, this does, too!

“Since branding is fundamentally about differentiation, there will be an upper limit to how much brand logos can homogenize and go together on a single dimension. It’s great to adapt to new consumer preferences, but if every brand does that in the same way, it fails to differentiate in a significant way. This is why I think there is a ‘race’ within each industry to be the first to do so, which then makes things more difficult for their competitors: should they persist in making their logo more basic, at the risk of looking like a copycat? Or should they cede that positioning and devise a way to differentiate by some other means?” he mused.

What Kind Of Stairs Is That Even????
These stairs are great. Instead of each tread using up the width of the staircase, you can fit in two steps. This is wonderful for confined spaces. It takes up about the same space as a ladder, but it's steps instead of rungs. The photograph has been taken from the top of the stairs, looking down. The steps are flat triangles. Start of with your right foot, then left on the next step down, continue until the bottom of the stairs.
It's the angangle of the photo that's throwing you off. We are looking down the flight where each tread has been cut in half forming to triangles(in this case) the top tread is for your right foot and the next step down is for the left and so forth. The risers are at 90% angles to the treadboards and will visually disappear as you move down the stairs.
I have big feet. I'd have to walk down those stairs like a sumo wrestler!
If it helps, the view is from the *top*, looking down. It's called a captain's stair, intended to minimize space used on the first floor. Just enough room for a foot on each tread and somewhat terrifying to go down in the usual manner. I recommend going down backwards.
When I was a kid, we lived in a converted Victorian mansion for a couple years. The stairs to the attic where the former servant's quarters were located looked just like this (except the treads were 1 piece of wood). The stairwell was only 20 inches wide so the stairs had to be offset to be big enough to be functional. The stairwell was between two chimneys (3 floors worth of fireplaces) so the depth was set to use the space between rooms. The house had no closets so this was an effective use of the space if you had servants. The attic was converted to 2 apartment with 2-5 people living there. Large furniture and appliances were moved in/out through a window.
Train To Machu Picchu With A Balcony
Ever held your hand out the car window and it smacked into a bug? Magnify that times a thousand and it's not your arm but every part of your body up for offering to the trickster gods of good and bad luck.

This is not very dangerous at all. The train to Machu Picchu takes about 3hrs 15mins. It travels 65.8 kilometers, which roughly breaks breaks down to 20.89kmph. For those of us in the U.S. that is around 13mph.

We went on it when we lived in LA. I’m scared of heights, but I found it completely underwhelming, som I’m not surprised it closed. We booked online after hearing the hype, so we would’ve canceled when we saw it in person, but figured we’d just do it anyway since we fought LA traffic to get there.

The Statue Of Liberty’s Torch, New York, NY
The torch has been closed since the "Black Tom" explosion of July 30, 1916, which was one of the largest acts of sabotage to our nation prior to the event of pearl harbor on December 7, 1941
It was closed because shrapnel from the explosion struck the statue, and caused damage to the arm. Visitors were putting undue stress on that part of the statue anyway, and the decision was made to close it off. You can visit the original torch (replaced in 1986) in the museum.

They Put A Trampoline In The Sky
This ones actually not that bad, they built the largest trampoline in the world and if you look at a video in which they use the trampoline the rails are actually pretty high. (it's Drew Dirkson's trampoline btw if u want to look it up)
Weeee ... Weeee... Weee .....WeeeeAHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... Splat!
As a child when I used to jump on a trampoline with my older brother, landing at the same time caused me to bounce extra high (one time causing my head to hit on the metal frame, before padding was a thing). If that happened on this trampoline it would make someone get flung off the edge. It's not like the rails are high.

Paternoster Lifts At Prague City Hall
I worked in a office in the UK in the early 80s and there was one of these. It covered 5 or 6 floors. Never remember anyone getting hurt using it.

Load More Replies...In spite of very strange feeling for the first time, they're actually very slow, so you can easily step in and out
The City Hall in Stuttgart has three of them. About 20 years ago they talked about shutting them down because they were supposed to be too dangerous. They investigated the number of accidents though, and the only incident they could find in the last ~50 years was an old woman with a cane tripping and getting some minor bruises... so the paternosters stayed. They are great, almost no waiting time, not that stuffy and closed feeling, no awkward staring at the door... there are normal elevators, too, of course for anyone who cant walk that well or is afraid. Best thing is staying in the cabin when it changes direction - which is forbidden but not really dangerous, it just gets dark for a second. When I was very young I was convinced though that the cabin will topple and you would fall from floor the the ceiling. Made the first trip quite exciting.
Same for the Finnish parliament, or at least they used to not sure if they're still in use.

It's a beautiful spot, very iconic and popular amongst Swiss and visitors as well. Not very scary. A lot scarier is the stream beneath. Let Me Show You Around The House.. Wait Don’t Go There!
Is it a house or a business? Way back it was pretty common to unload goods to a second-floor warehouse above a store. They would already be on a wagon or truck 1/4 of the way up and it was easier than hefting them down to ground level and then back up stairs.
In some parts of London you can see the echo of this on old buildings. Some even still have the iron bracket that would have held a winch for getting goods to the higher floors. I used to see quite a few on the bus around Borough

Walks off ledge. An hour later. Police officer " how did this happen exactly?" "Well, I was trying to tell him don't go out that door and he was busy looking at his clip board. And he was angry about prices and the stock, and......he fell off the ledge. I tryed to tell him but he wasn't listening." "And he owns this company and knew this was here?" "Yeah, but he don't come to this building a lot. He usually just works from home. I don't know why he don't come here more? But I gusse he forgot it was there or was to busy."
My last house had a door like this. The landlord had intended to build a balcony, but they never did. So it was a door to a 3 meter drop. I just kept it locked at all times.

Autobahn, Germany's Highways, Have No Speed Limits
As already mentioned, this is only partially true. It's also only safe because driving licenses are harder to come by than in other countries. Driving at night and on motorways are mandatory lessons and there has to be a proper eye test by a doctor or optician. Perhaps most importantly, a first aid course is mandatory and if you see an accident you're legally obligated to help.
Plus: you're only allowed to pass others on their left, and required to leave the left lane once you're done passing. If you don't feel like driving fast DO stick to the right lane.
Load More Replies...Yeah. A county where people actually learned how to drive can afford this.
We often drive through Germany on vacation trips. I find driving there more relxing than in the Netherlands; although some may want to drive really fast, people tend to keep their distance and allow others to take over other trafic. When a driver does not keep a distance, it is often a Dutch numerplate with a more expansive car, not a German. (In the Netherlands the limit during dayrime is 100 km/h)
And way fewer accidents than their neighbors who do have speed limits? Your case is invalid.
There is no general speedlimits. But 'drive as fast as you want' goes for only half of the autobahn network, where there is less trafic and longer stretches of highway without many exits/entrances. The rest has individual speedlimits, mostly between 100-130 kph.

Totally. It looks like it has traction on each step to prevent slips. Plus looks like a typical spiral staircase.
Load More Replies...About the only thing scary about this is that there are no backs to the treads, so you could slip your foot through the gap. Otherwise the handrail and central column provided adequate handholds for those less steady on their feet.
