Every day, some annoyance begs the question, “How is this still a thing?” From superfluous charges attached to normal transactions to absolutely predatory social media stars, there is a long list of norms that are way beyond their expiration date. So the new year is a good time to sit down and take stock.

Someone asked the internet “What should die in 2024?” and folks shared all the things that need to remain in the past. So get comfortable as you read through, upvote your favorite examples, and share what you hope is going to finally die out this year in the comments section below.

What happened that fast food restaurants now demand tips... tipping at a full service restaurant I'm cool with, if the wait staff deserves it, but fast food is crazy. Honestly surprised retail stores aren't doing this too.

anyone working a full time job should be able to afford housing, food, utilities, transportation, clothing, healthcare, vacations, self care, entertainment,/fun, family functions AND be able to put some back for savings as well as retirement, with some left over. 40 hours for fast food workers is the same amount of time as anyone else's 40 hours. No one should have to work multiple jobs just to be able to live. Also if you're being asked to tip (regardless of the type of establishment), there's a 99.999989% chance that the employees are not getting minimum wage. Just like servers, bartenders, and hosts. Because corporations want you to not only pay for the goods but pay the employees too.

It’s the business’ way of avoiding raising their employees’ pay. They’re just making consumers pick up their slack—-like double dipping by getting our money for their products AND cutting their payroll by using our money for tips instead of their money for raises—-and they’re probably laughing about it all the way to the bank. The f*****s.

I'm not American, but I've been there often enough to be up to speed with the tipping. In August, we visited our daughter in Fort Lauderdale and she took us to our first baseball game. During the game, we went to a counter for some food and ran into this spin-the-iPad routine. I thought "B******t!", looked the woman in the eye and hit the "skip" button. I'll tip the waitress who gives us the full service in a restaurant or diner, but some iPad spinner is going to miss out every time..

This is for the people who make the food not the person who punched it in. They probably don’t deserve a tip either way, but more deserved then this makes it out to be.

I refuse to use DoorDash or GrubHub because they expect a tip BEFORE they provide a service. I don't f*cking think so. Our favorite pizza place got rid of all their drivers and now use these instead. So, I order our pizza and then drive to pick it up. Girl at the counter literally takes 4 steps, grabs my pizza out of the warmer & takes 4 steps back to hand it to me. I swipe my debit card and she turns the terminal around for a tip. I said, "You've got to be joking. A trained monkey could do what you just did & I refuse to tip you for actually DOING YOUR JOB". A sit down restaurant, sure. Walking up to the counter and being HANDED a pizza? I don't f*cking think so. Tipping culture is WAY out of control.

I order a lot of pizza (can't help it, we love pizza). I have an understanding with the shop that when my name comes up on the order, I expect the pizza quality to commensurate with the tip. So far for 15 or 20% tips, I get doubles and triples on the main ingredients without asking for them. This is a one off case though.

Cashiers aren't making anything....and guess what? Neither are the people in the kitchen. Fast food is par-cooked and flash frozen before being distributed to franchises. It's not being cooked so much as heated up. It's so undemanding and simple that the entire industry was preeminently populated by stoned teenagers 20 years ago. No one argues that it doesn't suck, or it isn't horrible....but that's why you do those no-skill jobs when you're a kid....so you get it in your head fast and early that doing that BS isn't, nor should it be, sustainable.

Housing should primarily be in the hands of the state, not private companies. Everyone needs to live somewhere and for a society it's better to have it's members live in a home rather than on the streets with all the other problems attached to it. Private companies can play a role in the higher segments of housing, but everyone should be able to live under a roof.
