Every day, some annoyance begs the question, “How is this still a thing?” From superfluous charges attached to normal transactions to absolutely predatory social media stars, there is a long list of norms that are way beyond their expiration date. So the new year is a good time to sit down and take stock.

Someone asked the internet “What should die in 2024?” and folks shared all the things that need to remain in the past. So get comfortable as you read through, upvote your favorite examples, and share what you hope is going to finally die out this year in the comments section below.

I have a mini heart attack anytime I'm in public like on a train etc and on a website that could do this. Being deaf I'm so worried a video will start playing and I won't notice and just subject everyone around me to some random advert, I spend half my time browsing either checking my phone is properly on silent or feeling my speakers for vibration!

A good speech would usually offend someone because a good speech states the truth...and the truth isn't always unicorns and rainbows. Someone will definitely get offended by this truth...

That's not the issue though. I agree with your statement but hate speech is a clear and concise topic. You can't call people racial slurs and then act buthurt when your posts with those racist slurs are removed. That's different than pointing out white Europeans were terrible to the native population of North America.

I feel like regardless of whether you think it's acceptable to call someone a Ginger when you're not a Ginger, we can all agree it's not hate speech until you also say something implying we're subhuman or that committing violence against us is perfectly fine because we happen to have been born with an unusual hair color. Just as an example.

A different opinion isn't hate or intended offense, which is why it's called an opinion. If you're of the opinion that you're offended, how is that any different than what you try to deny me of?

My understanding is that we have the freedom of speech, with very specific exceptions but that doesn't mean you can say whatever you want and not have any kind of consequences, just that nobody can stop you from saying it regardless of how ignorant. Say what you want but be ready to stand up for those convictions if there's a response. No crying about free speech, the other side has the same protection

It's a virtue, these days, to be offended by something that someone says – no matter how innocuous the statement might be, someone will get indignant about it. That's how social media "enriches" our lives.

I truly hate the word 'offend' because it is used so widely. Offend should be a bit rude about someone or group of people, such as the time Trevor Nelson joked about the novichok incident in Salisbury, UK, but implying that anyone that ate in a British restaurant shouldn't be surprised they got ill afterwards. It was untrue, annoying, and yes, offensive. But it wasn't punching down, it wasn't feeding a stereotype that truly harms people (our tourist industry seems fine, despite a reputation for bad food - completely undeserved but hey ho), my life nor any other British person's life has constantly been made worse by the belief that Brits can't cook. However comments that do feed and nurture stereotypes about different groups of people that harm their chances of a chance of fulfilling their potential and being happy in their own way also get called 'offensive' and they shouldn't. People jump about saying 'I was just saying what I thought, that doesn't make it hate speech'

That's why NO SPEECH should be criminalized. making noise by moving air in and out of your body should never be illegal. It is literally a natural given right you cannot take away from anyone except by ending their breathing and life. If noise offends you, pluck out thine ear drums.

Absolute rubbish. The classic example is shouting "fire" in a crowded theatre when there is no fire. When people are hurt in ensuing panic, should the person who shouted it be able to just say "free speech" and walk away? Or calling in a bomb threat, telling a subordinate that they must sleep with you or lose their job, telling people your new pill cures cancer when it doesn't, etc. How about if I went to where you live and told everybody you are a child molester? You're saying those things should have zero legal consequences?

Nah so like, if you say something that is labeled "hate speech" then you are probably in the wrong. People don't label things hate speech simply because it's offensive. It gets labeled that because it's probably hate speech but the speaker is too ignoranr to realize it.

You say so as to prove the OP's point. Lets take Trans people. Don't think trans women belong in female athletics? Well you're transphobic and spreading hate, and fear and all the poor little trans kids are going to end up dead because you're a LITERAL NAZI! Do you take issue with the "body positivity movement" by pointing out the sky rocketing rates of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, fatty liver disease and cancer all linked to the every expanding obesity rate? You're fat-phobic and spreading hate by trying to SHAME people! Doesn't matter which extra special little demographic it is, absolutely anyone who criticizes, disagree's or even makes a joke about something any aspect of them, you're sexist/racist/phobic and thus can be safely ignored. The funny thing is, that all the people normalizing this behavior....are too ignorant to realize that they're hypocrites. They are the highest example of what the claim to stand against.

Housing should primarily be in the hands of the state, not private companies. Everyone needs to live somewhere and for a society it's better to have it's members live in a home rather than on the streets with all the other problems attached to it. Private companies can play a role in the higher segments of housing, but everyone should be able to live under a roof.
