Every day, some annoyance begs the question, “How is this still a thing?” From superfluous charges attached to normal transactions to absolutely predatory social media stars, there is a long list of norms that are way beyond their expiration date. So the new year is a good time to sit down and take stock.

Someone asked the internet “What should die in 2024?” and folks shared all the things that need to remain in the past. So get comfortable as you read through, upvote your favorite examples, and share what you hope is going to finally die out this year in the comments section below.

Being deaf I'm so worried a video will start playing and I won't notice and just subject everyone around me to some random advert, I spend half my time browsing either checking my phone is properly on silent or feeling my speakers for vibration!

Housing should primarily be in the hands of the state, not private companies. Everyone needs to live somewhere and for a society it's better to have it's members live in a home rather than on the streets with all the other problems attached to it. Private companies can play a role in the higher segments of housing, but everyone should be able to live under a roof.

I have never heard of autism levels. It was certainly never discussed during my son’s assessments and diagnosis. Having had a look, my son falls into all 3 levels. But then the one thing I have learned is that the spectrum is not linear.

It’s not new. I used to follow some autistic people on twitter so I could learn how to best help my son. They were all on the mind that self diagnosis was just as valid as that of is medical specialist. They did not like it when challenged or even questioned about that view point.

I am a psychologist. If you were diagnosed some time ago, you may not be familiar with a “level”. The current DSM-V criteria include levels of severity for the social-communication and for the repetitive behavior criteria, based on the level of support a person needs related to such.

I only partially agree, yes people should talk to a professional and prevent false diagnosis, and some people lie to get attention. But there are people who aren't able to get a proper diagnosis. This can be the result of a variety of variables in each individual person's life. I, for example, am currently not "officially" diagnosed because my autism was undetectable due to my heightened angsiety during the time of my exam. I am unfiagnosed despite all of the many proffessionals I was ABLE to talk to agreeing that I have autism. And I am one of a lucky few examples that was ABLE to talk to my parents, ABLE to talk to my doctor, and ABLE to afford those types of appointments. Women are harder to diagnose because mental illness isn't studied nearly as much in us. So yes, people should be cautious to diagnose themselves, as well as be cautious of believing people online who self-diagnose, but sometimes that isn't an option.

I'm curious. Why the desire to have that particular label? You had an exam and it was negative. Even if you do have some mild traits. What does having this "diagnosis" provide. You don't need to be autistic to have permission to have whatever quirks you have. And getting the diagnosis doesn't help you with medication. Is there a specific type of therapy you're hoping to get by having this label? I just don't understand why people get so invested in having a particular MH diagnosis.

ASD is a spectrum - some are on the lower end and require 24/7 support, but some are on the higher functioning end and may seem "normal" to most but still struggle with life. Don't judge - some disabilities are truly invisible.

I absolutely disagree with this. I realised I have ADHD after finding out more about the condition. I went to my GP, got referred for an assessment and was diagnosed with ADHD and possibly autism (need a different assessment). I'm now on medication which is making my life easier and reducing the trouble I'm getting into at work. So I dispute this opinion wholeheartedly. It was a huge relief to be diagnosed and to know that I had something that made me the way I am and that it wasn't character flaws.

I always just thought I was being a weird one. Over the years and after having kids it got worse and worse. Last year I was examined for autism, which I have not. Instead I'm gifted and with autistic traits. Things are still shtty and I am on a waiting list to be examined for ADHD. My doctor thinks I'm being silly that I think I might have ADHD. But there are just sooooo many things in my behaviour and way of thinking that could be linked to ADHD as far as I can tell. I may not be ADHD but I am very sure I have strong traits of it at least. Oh yeah... my appointment to be examined is 2.5 years out in the future... 😕

Yeah... let's stop making autism/psychological issues a 'trend'. Seriously... it's becoming a trend - and it's ridiculous. I know someone (maybe a few someones) who are constantly messaging me sh** like 'I think I might be [autistic/neurodivergent/something]" then immediately denying that a doctor has the ability to diagnose them because they're just too special... and all I can think is "So are you really, or did you just do something selfish/insensitive/harmful to someone else and you're trying to avoid responsibility.... again?"

As someone with diagnosed ADHD and many symptoms of ASD, I'd like to point out that ADHD and ASD have enough in common that there's talk of AuDHD being a thing. And Self Diagnosis is 'valid' to the extent that you're using it to help yourself find strategies to help yourself, and if possible, realizing you should look into a formal diagnosis, and getting one. Though they can be very difficult to get in some places. Gal I was forced to go through didn't believe you could have ASD and emotional range and expressiveness. -___- Unlike my actual therapist. But apparently therapists aren't qualified to diagnose a person with ASD where I live.

Honestly, we all have some form of mental illness. No one is okay. And psychiatrists are probably about as accurate as diagnosing you as any test you can take online. Cause in many things in psychiatry it's a PRACTICE, and many things are open to INTERPRETATION. AI is better at diagnosing then doctors at this point supposedly.
