We often hear about the biggest animals that would easily tower over humans twice, thrice, and some even ten times. But how big, exactly, are they?

Let’s take the blue whale, which is known as one of the largest animals ever to exist. Imagine: the largest ever measured 110 feet long. If that doesn’t ring a bell just yet, think of it as longer than 2 packed school buses that seat 40 people each. It’s also longer than 18 grown men of 6 feet laid head to toe with each other.

If your head is spinning, right down below is a collection of animal photos that put their size into perspective and do the "just imagine" part for us. From very large Maine coons to gigantic Siberian tigers, these are the big boys and girls of the animal kingdom.

Yup. Had to have. The average Clyd is 17-18 hands at the withers. The tallest horse known right now is 20 hands 2.75 inches. This is either photoshopped or she is about 4'6"

First they find the largest Clydesdales they can, then the littlest person they can find. Shires are the largest horse breed in the world.

Yes, I tend to agree with you.... I've seen many Clydesdales, and while they are huge they are not as large as in comparison with this human..... I think some 'tinkering' has been done here . . . .

In order to get the accurate picture, we should probably know how tall she is. If she's 5'10", the size of those horses are impressive. If she's 4'11", not so much.

We usually imagine felines as cute little furballs who, no matter how fast they grow up, still fit into our lap just fine. But there’s one cat breed known as the Maine coon that can easily reach up to 40 inches. In comparison, the average size of an adult domestic cat comes in at as little as 8 to 10 inches.

In order to find out more about the scale of these massive felines, Bored Panda reached out to Jess Beckwith, a professional Maine coon breeder based in the United Kingdom from RudyCats.co.uk. Jess told us that Maine coons are referred to “as the dogs of the cat world, not only because of their incredible personalities, but also because of their size.”

They’re the biggest domestic cats and can range from 11 to 33 pounds when fully grown. Two of Jess’s “young neutered boys currently hit the scales at around 21 pounds.” Meanwhile, the largest Maine coon is named Barivel and he measures a whopping 3 feet and 11.2 inches from head to tail tip. That makes him longer than a baseball bat.

However impressive the scale of Maine coons may be, it’s not the most important feature when it comes to exhibitions. Jess said that “good bone structure, features, and the ‘not too extreme’ look is best, as well as temperament and health, of course,” are more important for winning a title in the big game.

This photo is a little misleading--note how big the person's hand is compared to her body. It's a weird camera angle that makes the hand (and therefore the snail) appear much larger than it actually is. However, that's STILL a snail that's the size of your hand. Hold out your hand and imagine a snail that size sitting in it!

This big boy who resembles an oversized guinea pig is, in fact, a nocturnal marsupial known as a wombat (Vombatus ursinus). Patrick has stolen people's hearts by being both incredibly cute and gigantic. Weighing 84 pounds, he is one of the largest (and oldest) wombats ever to have lived.

Only quite recently, a new, wombat-like species was discovered in Australia called Makupirna nambensis, which literally translates to “big bones” in the aboriginal language. The creature’s remains are now one of the oldest fossils found in the area, thought to date back to 25 million years ago. This boy could have weighed 330 pounds, which is more than five adult wombats living today.

Yet, Makupirna is still not the biggest. The absolute record-breaking wombat-like creature was called Diprotodon and it weighed over two tons. This powerful beast could have lived until 11,700 years ago.

Once, at the rabbit festival in Mexico City (Xochimilco, to be exact) the Tuxpan Rabbit Farm was there. They brought their family pet, Aquiles, with them, to show off to the crowds. Aquiles was a Flemish Giant the size of the bunny in the photo. He lived in the family's house, hopped around freely, and his best friend was their terrier (of some type) dog. I want one so much.

Marine mammals should never have to live their lives theme park attractions. Even the rescued ones who can't be returned to the wild have better things to do than act as a roadside attraction. Do what's best for them. Leave them alone in the wild, and keep any unreleasable animals in accredited sanctuary habitats that allow them to enjoy as many of their normal species behaviors as possible--away from gawking crowds of humans.

Such a domestic unique animal...no more respect than letting it die in an aquarium; so us people can go look at it, and than offcourse we go home. But not this fella, this was his life. Same species, I'd say, as the ridges aren't pronounced enough on the bottom for it to be an alligator snapper

I have a local thing by my house it is kind of like a mini mini zoo (snakes, frogs, skunk, and turtles) and it also has a wildlife viewing trail. Anyways, they have a 2 foot snapping turtle in a 3 foot thing with no place to rest because the whole thing is only water. It disappoints me to think that people would keep such an animal but won’t give it the proper care it needs.

Recently I saw a bird of prey (not sure what sort of hawk it was) take off with prey in its talons... I felt equally horrified and fascinated. I know nature is often brutal by human standards but then I think about all the abhorrent and cruel things people do to animals and other human beings and I readjust my way of seeing such natural things.

It's all out of proportions due to forced perpective of the cell phone camera. With a flipper as long as his body, the turtle could not swim.

I loved the story about the whale who scared the c**p out of a lady while it and it's pod mates were trying to protect her from either killer whales or sharks. Whales are amazing creatures.

Those claws are sharp as blades, and cassowaries can jump quite high before striking. No wonder their attacks, though rare, can easily be lethal to humans. Better leave them alone anyways, claw or no claw.

Not to worry. The only effect of one dose of Hymenoptera venom is a short period of pain and unless you have an allergy, it's not that dangerous at all. But beware the warrior wasp. A man compared the sting to being chained in the flow of an active volcano. Although if you get swarmed by those beasts, it's game over.

Vespa Mandarinia Japonica don't get quite that big (though they are impressively big) and they're black and yellow. These look quite different from the ones I've seen. In Japan, Asian Hornets are very docile. They're like cows with wings. Many people are afraid of them, but if you move gently and don't threaten them, they're not a problem. I've helped dozens of them out the windows when they get inside, and haven't been stung yet.

It's quite common for vets to do this. Horses are known for snorting dirt, which in turns gets captured in their lungs. It's a well known practice for vets to remove the horse's lungs, give them a good hoover, then return them to the horse's body. This picture must have been taken mid-hoover, since they don't look dirty but you can still see some of the dirt at the bottom of the lungs!! You learn something new every day :)!

Ok, this is a training session, you only see one arm but there are a bunch of vet interns behind the camera, getting the lowdown on how horses breathe. The doc is a very dramatic teacher, she has them mesmerized. We see them int he winter along the Arkansas River west of Tulsa, Oklahoma in their winter roosts. Our lakes are full of chad, small mouth bass and migratory waterfowl in winter time so the eagles travel down to nest and enjoy the relatively mild winters compared to the great Lakes and Canada. They really surprise you when they take off from a tree if you are close because of the 6-8 feet of wingspan the full grown adults have.

I thought you might want to know that in that Claw display (it's from the company Bone Clones), the two cheetah claws are reversed... mislabeled. The Cheetah Dew Claw should be the more heavily curved one, and the Cheetah Front Claw should be the straighter one. I alerted Bone Clones of their error in 2018, and they have sinnce changed it in all their catalogs. But the older incorrect ones are still out there... confusing everyone. Use only Bone Clone catalog pics that are dated 2018 or later.

Fun fact: lobsters don't stop growing. That is, they don't have a size cap. They constantly have to develop a new exoskeleton and shed the old one every few years or so. This one that this claw once belonged to was super old, it's amazing

Matthew Chapman - didn't say people that eat lobsters are evil, not sure how you derived that from what I said. The point here being it's such an old creature and rare large size it would be nice to have in an aquarium for the public to see and learn about crustaceans. Not for 1 guy to smash it up and eat it

In many parts of the country they are over populated with rattlesnakes and the older ones have to be killed to help other species survive. This snake looks like it has lived a long life and in killing this one it helps other species, including its own, survive.

For me there's a basic principle. We humans have populated lots of areas that we aren't at home in. If you come against something "nasty", guess what, it was there first. Learn to adapt or step back. If you get bitten by a snake/shark/giant snapping turtle thing, it's YOUR fault- you are in their habitat. You are prey.

You didn’t have to kill it. There’s other ways to safely move snakes. They are good for killing other pests like mice, the kind of animals that actually do damage your crops

Lots of people here upset about this catch and his satisfaction with it. Do none of you eat fish? As long as people eat fish, other people will be catching them to make a living, and a big and/or rare catch like this means more money in their pockets. Millions of other fish dying like this all the time - welcome to humans. :\

According to Waiopai Sport Fishing Charters, it is the biggest blue marlin caught in Kona in 25 years. They said it took two men over an hour to land the 14-and-and-half foot marlin on their 20-foot boat. The group also said that judging by it’s size, the fish was probably aged between 25 and 35 years. They added the angler was not sports fishing, nor was the fish caught for trophy, noting that marlin is a “very prized food fish in Hawaii” and this particularly fish will be eaten.

Listen, I get that you all care about animals, I do too, but this man will probably eat this fish and not just take a pic and leave it for the gulls. It's okay to hunt as long as it is within reason and you respect the animal's life. This man is proud of this catch. There is really no need to wish him ill, and say that you wish he was dead. It just makes you sound judgmental and mean. And if it was really just for the pic, yeah, f*ck him.
