Company and office politics can get very nasty, very quickly. And employees are usually at a disadvantage when negotiating for a livable wage, better working conditions, and the bare amount of basic respect from their superiors.
While many workers tend to quietly accept whatever their entitled bosses tell them, everyone has a breaking point. And all it takes is one last act of rudeness to spur even the shyest employees to finally stand up for themselves.
We’ve collected some of the most powerful conversations showing employees putting their bad bosses in place from the r/antiwork subreddit, and they show just how bad things can get at work. However, there’s a flip side: some people are willing to fight for justice and their own dignity. Scroll down, upvote the pics that impressed you the most, and let us know in the comments if you’ve ever confronted your manager, dear Pandas.
Bored Panda got in touch with workplace expert Lynn Taylor who answered our questions about diplomacy and communication in the workplace, as well as what everyone should keep in mind when quitting. When you decide to quit, you should consider how you want to be remembered. Lynn is the author of ‘Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant’ and the CEO of the fashion brand ‘Behind the Buckle.’ Read on for our full interview with her.

When You’re So Antiwork You End Up Working
And that's how you do it. Strikes should inconvenience the people you want/need to make the change. Not every day innocent *powerless* bystanders. Piss off people who cannot do anything to make the change you need and you very quickly lose their support; one extra opponent.
I used to mention that here in Brazil a couple years ago. People protested the government by...burning buses. It damaged them as badly as the companies (and employees). These companies would later raise the fares because of the losses and drivers quitting out of fear. Meanwhile, politicians in their private planes/ships/cars...
Load More Replies...This is an excellent plan... and probably worked as well or better than a typical work stoppage. Good thinking!
Winnipeg Transit did this one day in protest of the lack of security and safety. I think it came right after a driver was stabbed to death over a fare dispute.
This is not exclusive to japan, in many cities over e.g. Europe bus drivers have done the exact same thing over the years.
They did something similar in Morocco. The toll booth workers still showed up, but we didn’t have to pay.
Workplace expert Lynn stressed that any employee thinking of quitting should think about their future prospects. Sometimes, it's best to hide your anger and put all of your energy into finding a new, better job. However, bullying should never be tolerated and, in cases where the boss is very much acting like a bully, it's best to consult with a lawyer.
"The best way to quit is to think about how you want to be remembered. Every industry in a given city has a relatively small network of good people. We have all heard 'it’s a small world' and the '6 degrees of separation.' As satisfying as it feels to 'put a bad boss in their place' upon departure, leave those fantasies in your mind. You never want to burn your bridges or get a reputation for being a troublemaker. It will get around and hurt your career," she stressed that the worker should think about what is best for them in the long run.
"Your best bet is to thank your boss for the opportunity at the company and limit the number of negative comments you offer. It is unlikely to change behavior in a significant way. Be glad that you’ve decided to take the difficult step of moving on," Lynn said that the reward is moving on with your career.
"Very few people want to engage in lawsuits against a bully boss, for example, unless they feel they it will most certainly be a win. When in doubt, of course, you should always consult an employment attorney. And while the idea can be tempting, you may want to place more of your energy in your next, better job—or career pursuit."
Employer Gave Me A 4$ Raise Today
That’s what I’m talking about.
I work as a welder and today my employer individuallly talked to all the welders and offered us a raise because they want to keep employees and they also want to attract new people, when he told me my hourly pay rate when up by 4$ hour l almost couldnt believe it. I work a lot of OT and I work the Night shift. I was feeling burned out from the hours but once I got the raise I was so happy I went right back to work and now I’m working all the OT I can get. I’ve been with this company three months they have bought me a pair of boots, uniforms, prescription safety glasses, and give me a lot of free equipment for protection, and my morale just keeps getting higher while I work till 3 am with a smile on my face.
Invest in your employees, when you treat them like an asset and not a cost, you get better as a business.
Welders earn well. 50k a year during apprenticeship right out of training school and earn about 90 after apprenticeship. After 5 years earn between 120k-200k a year depending on the type of welding, region, and hours you are willing to work (earn between 70-120 an hour depending on region and type of welding). I met a welder works just 30 hours a week, for only 50 weeks a year at 95 an hour for construction site. Met a welder in a ship repair yard, got paid 110 an hour for a standard 40 hour work week with 6 weeks of vacation. Really good blue collar money and a job in shortage
So all it took to go from burned out, to not burned out was $4 more per hour ?
I'm also a welder. Good welders are hard to come by. If you don't pay them well somebody else will.
So... this really is a "positive" story??? 4 more dollars an hour??? Is that really a significant raise??? When I read the story, I thought the OP was being sarcastic... 4 more dollars doesn't sound much... 😕
I would say it's a good raise. My last raise before maternity leave was 50$/month (get paid per month 40hr work week). But social work isn't really the field to earn money... 640$ is definitely significant imo.

When will managers realize that THEIR being short staffed is a THEM problem. Not an employee's problem. They apparently did not hire enough people for their business to remain fully staffed if a couple of people can not work. Their unpreparedness and crappy hiring practices are NOT the workers fault. I am so glad to see all this pushback against these toxic work expectations!
39.75 for "exp." Dayumn. I personally call it "extra time" and ask if people know what "overtime" means and when they say yes. I say "extra time is 2x my base wage for last minute coverage or else no dice.." Turns out they really can't afford me sometimes. Sux for "them."
you can't just DEMAND someone come in when they're not on the rota ahead of time! you are paying someone to provide a service, they aren't obligated to provide it at short notice, if they're not available.
Lynn was kind enough to give us some pointers about how employees should approach communicating with their bosses. "Know your objective. If you’re acting defensively, that won’t move the needle on enhancing your relationship. Think about how you would react as the recipient," she said.
The expert suggested using 'positive bookends' when tackling sensitive conversations. Here's one example of how to approach this: "'I really enjoy my job, but there’s something that set me back a bit recently.' Enter: your beef. Wrap with: 'Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to me… I very much appreciate your efforts in trying to work better together.'"
The author and workplace expert also believes that employees should consider using positive and negative reinforcement, as they would when disciplining a small child. She also suggested using the 'CALM' (communicate, anticipate, levity, manage up) technique which works with difficult bosses and coworkers.
"C—Communicate—often, clearly, concisely… and know how your boss prefers to communicate. A—Anticipate—Anticipate problems before they worsen and try to nip them in the bud. Know your timing when you need to have difficult conversations. L—Levity—A little well-placed humor can tamp down tensions. It can give your boss a better, lighter perspective on the issue at hand. M—Manage up—Be the voice of reason with your boss and be a problem solver. But also, set boundaries. You must be able to speak up for yourself if your work product or mental state is suffering," Lynn explained to Bored Panda.
So This Just Happened And I’m Almost Numb ATM. I Hope I Don’t Regret This Tomorrow As I Do Enjoy My Job, But Management Is Rough
So, because the guy is single, he has no right to a private life? This smells like discrimination.
Yeah. I had a boss tell me I wasn't entitled to a raise after I had picked up a whole bunch of higher grade duties because I didn't have children. A couple weeks later I had a new job and new, much more lucrative career.
Load More Replies...Woah, that threat there is nasty. I can't believe the things some people are comfortable saying to others. "Choose your words carefully, I can hurt your financial situation"... Jeez man... That's just nasty.
"no" is a complete and polite answer. Don't give reasons as people tend to start hassling about those.
I spent my entire career convincing my bosses that those of us who chose not to have children do not exist just to make life easier for those with kids. I think it should be illegal for your employer to ask if you have children, because it is so often used to penalize the child free. Asking you WHY you can't work your day off should be illegal too. I once had a supervisor who refused to give us our paychecks when they were issued... she'd make us wait and have people begging for their checks. One day, I asked for my check and she said no. I asked her on what grounds she was withholding them, and she said " I don't think you need it right now". I went to HR the next morning (I worked night shift) and asked for my check. They told me my supervisor had it and I said, exactly ... she's unwilling to give it to me so I'd like a duplicate check issued. It's my money, I earned every penny of it, and I would like it now. I will accept cash. That supervisor was fired.
mwahaha - that entitled supervisor sure did get her come-uppance, and boy, am I here for it!
Load More Replies..."Brian chose to have a kid, so he gets special treatment and his time gets respected." wtf kind of mentality is that? That would have pissed me off more than anything. I would have said, "Yeah, Brian has a kid, so he needs the extra money, call him." Also, don't answer texts from work on your off time. Just tell them you were busy and didn't see it. They'll get madder if you respond and don't do what they want than if they got no response from you.
Unwise to disclose financial status with your boss when he is already underpaying you 😄
Just Rotten To The Core
If the customer wanted to tip everyone he would have specified that. She earned the tip, she keeps it
No joke, they never had pool tips and now when she gets something nice she has to share it, and the owner wants in on it too!!!???? This shows that the owner only cares about money and not staff since she was fired...she has to deal with the IRS taking half and still has to deal with the place!? Man, pisses me off that people take advantage of others...
Load More Replies...Lucky excellent worker. Instead of wanting a share the boss should tell staff to follow her lead
Wait a minute. Im not sure I understand. It says that she was fired for "NOT" sharing the tip. and also that they never pooled their tips. If it never happens, then why'd she get fired?
Quit My Job Last Night, It Was Nice To Be Home To Make The Kids Breakfast And Take Them To School Today! Off To Hunt For A New Opportunity, Wish Me Luck
I love when they threaten firing someone, but once they realize the employee doesn't care, they quickly backpedal. Hipocrisy and fear culture, live!
Ya, I used to talk back to managers, supervisors, etc. when they would ask me to do completely dumb s**t, I got in trouble a few times sure, and a few of the people didn't like me as much (some of the ones I clapped back on actually liked me more, oddly?) but never got in any serious trouble. And man did it feel good to make those people feel dumb. :) I was Maintenance at a Costco, driving a floor scrubber, so I got to make them look and feel dumb over a walky talky!

any decent workplace would have been like BOSS: why were you sitting down during your shift? WORKER: Broken foot bones. I have a doctor's note and LEAD cleared me to sit at work. BOSS: Holy s&*t, why the eff were you even at work at all with a broken foot? Get your butt home till you've healed up. BTW I also noticed you packed 240 UPH. Congrats. we'll discuss that outstanding performance when you return from injury leave.
Any decent workplace would not expect an employee to stand at all for hours when it's obviously not neccessary to do the job right.
Load More Replies...control. people with little power/control tend to flex it as much as they can. that's why middle management s***s so bad.
Load More Replies...""F**k you and your company. I quit," works perfectly in this case.
Amazon, right? Dude, I'd have intentionally broken my foot if it meant I could sit on a stool for that 12 hour shift.
Mid level Managers (with the ability to fire) have had way too much power in the last few years. They pretend to be your buddy until you say no to something, then you're enemy #1. I wonder how many higher ups are aware of how much personnel they've lost. The MLM tells them they were a terrible worker and it won't affect the numbers. Meanwhile, they lost a good worker who got tired of being dinged for all the small things that happened, but never recognized for a superior performance.
We were curious about how best to react if a difficult boss demands too much and unloads lots of additional work on employees. The expert stressed that it's important to help the boss see priorities.
"For example, if your supervisor says you need to do A, B, and C by tomorrow, diplomatically explain that it will hurt all projects to get them done the next day because (then explain very briefly what’s involved or the potential negative outcomes). Then explain the positives of an alternative approach, such as, 'If I focus on 'project A' today, we will likely land the Smith account.'"
"As I describe in my book, 'Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant,' this is similar to telling 'Johnny' he can’t go to the zoo, a play date and for pizza all in the same day, e.g., he will be sad, because he won’t have fun at any of them. 'Which one do you really want to have fun doing, Johnny?'
Lynn explained to us why she thinks it's useful to create analogies between bosses and toddlers, like in her book. "It makes you realize that badly behaving bosses are very much like angry toddlers, especially when are either stressed or frustrated. All mortal beings can act out when we are pushed to the limit. When you know where the boss is coming from, such as the stock plummeting 5% that day, your approach will be more effective," she said.
My Boss Said To Me "You're So Skinny!"
I replied, "Yeah I don't really eat a lot."
She asked Why??
So I looked her dead in the eye and said "I can't afford a lot of food."
The resulting 5 minute awkward silence was the best five minutes of my life.
I feel just slightly envious. I don't get to eat a lot and I'm flabby. Not skinny. Weight doesn't imply eating well. At least for an American. It usually means they can only afford fat saturated garbage food.

Any "tone" in that first text response was placed there by the boss.
Seriously, what's with the "tone" comment? I thought the employee's response was fine. My only guess it that the boss took offence becuase there was no groveling and pleading, just a polite and concise statement of facts.
Load More Replies...I don't appreciate the tone? I didn't get one ounce of attitude from the text message, I got a very legitimate response for saying no. No snarky response at all.
Have had disciplinary letters "put on my file" for a similar response and told my tone was "unprofessional and unauthorised" when they texted me at 2200hrs the night before to tell me my pre-planned and months in advance approved 1 week leave was unapproved and I was needed in the next day and extra early because they had reduced staffing levels as a budget measure and they had forgotten that they had approved my leave and not rostered anyone. I ended up coming in because otherwise there would have been only 1 nurse on the ward and that would have been unsafe for them with the patients we had there at the time. Quitting and finding somewhere else took a long while as I had to use them for a reference to get anywhere else, as that is how nursing is set up here, and they kept deliberately giving a poor reference to prevent me leaving. Eventually walked and went FIFO agency for about 3 times the money

Load More Replies...Yep bosses like this can f**k themselves with a spiky dildo. When my dad’s mom passed I went to ask for the day of her service off. My manager asked if it was my mom‘s mom or my dad‘s mom. I thought nothing of it so I said “my dad‘s mom”. Her response to that was “oh so it’s not important you can work that day.” Yep, I wish nothing but bad things for them.
Not your victim anymore, am I? And the best part, you're not my boss anymore, are you? Hah!
Wow.. Just wow.... Wth is wrong with some people?! Getting sick reading all these boss'es replies. Fck this ahole.. This boss can do the ducking work himself...
"You can’t be oblivious to what someone else is going through and behave correctly. You also can’t assume that an angry boss is angry at you, per se. Chances are other people are getting the same treatment. Don’t take it all personally, but never allow anyone to be abusive, ever, to you in the workplace. No bullying should ever be tolerated."
However, Lynn believes that this approach doesn't mean that employees should try to be patronizing. She thinks that this would actually be a career-limiting move. "Just know that human nature is, at its core, no different at five or 55," she told Bored Panda. "Looking at a difficult boss through the lens of a parent can be useful in another way. Humor is a good way to view tough situations more objectively: 'Johnny is having a bad day. And it’s 11:30 AM, so I should not go in there, as he is hungry.' This assumes that the bad behavior is episodic and not a pattern. Nobody should ever tolerate toxic behavior."
She added: "Most bad bosses can be charmers a lot of the time, but then act out unexpectedly, occasionally and seemingly for no reason."
Proved My Boss Wrong (By Getting A 40k Raise)
For almost a year, my boss has been constantly letting me know how lucky I am that I have a job at this company. He would have me do tasks way outside of my job description (and comfort zone), tell me to work overtime off the clock, ignore every suggestion I've made, micromanage everything I do, and undermine me at every step. I currently get anxiety attacks every time I see his name on my phone because there's a good chance he's about to yell at me about something that's his fault.
I asked them to change the work environment and treat me with respect. He told me "no". He reemphasized that I should be grateful for this role, I need to try harder, and I won't find a job elsewhere.
I just proved him wrong. I've been secretely applying and interviewing for the past 5 weeks and have received about 10 offers at this time. I'm about to sign the paperwork to officially accept one for a much better job that pays 40k more. The interviewer will be my future boss, and he actually treated me with respect and as if I was a person *gasp*!
Drafting up my resignation letter now and I can't stop smiling.
I hope you're drafting up your resignation letter at work. Use their time and resources to get the hell out of there!
You should draft it there and just wait the whole time on ur shift and then give ur boss the letter when you "go on lunch"
I'd be tempted to make it a list of all the OTHER times he's been wrong, too...
Same just happened to my husband. Doing extra work working alone in a position that requires multiple people. Still not making the current starting wage for us position despite being there 10 yrs. Was offered a promotion but the owners son s**t it down. Fed up he started applying in under a week he landed a job that will have hime making more then anyone at that place including the owners son. YES. I work for two stores out of a group of 11. Had a head office meeting with all the coordinators and COULDNT BELIEVE how respectful and helpful everyone was to each other. Like people were actually telling me “hey good job on this or that” and actually replying to my questions when I needed something from them. (Instead of begging/whining/harassing me to do something for them and then totally going silent the instant I need info from them before i continue the project because they “don’t have time for this s**t”). My stores apparently have a culture problem.

Never Told A Boss Off Like This. And It Felt Amazing
It's amazing to me that these "bosses" think they are the boss of their employees all the time, no matter if they're on the clock or not.
I think there is some sort of brain damage affecting almost all the middle managers I have ever known... they really do believe that they OWN employees. I had a horrible boss who wanted a coworker to give up her scheduled time off... she said "I can't. It's my sister's wedding, I am maid of honor" the boss said "you need to decide what is important to you, your job or parties". She replied "this is my FAMILY" boss said "we are your family now." I have no idea why that coworker quit! /s
"We are your family now"?! Holy s**t, I think your sister may have escaped from a cult! Or a procedural TV show where they have no time to show lives outside of work so they pretend that claiming your coworkers are family is a normal thing to do (and I speak as someone who really likes her coworkers, boss and job. Just in a healthy way.)

Manager Steals Tips; One Upvote And He Gets My 2 Weeks Today
Edit: I am going to quit tonight. Not even finish my shift. He’s getting my keys and uniform and im gone. Thank you guys for the words and the help! I’ve been working since I was 14 under incredibly [lousy] bosses so I never realized how illegal his actions were. I’m going to call him out tonight and leave during my shift. I truly do appreciate you guys. Ill update it when i do quit :)! Sorry for the format, I am on a phone. Your guys’ favorite thing to hear. I recently started work at a pizza place in Washington state. I should’ve known my interview was a red flag when the entire time my manager talked about his medical issues. A delivery driver ended up quitting a few weeks after I started because of the verbal degradation our manager was giving him. ‘This boy went to college but is too dumb to remember what’s garlic butter’ type stuff. he verbally insults everyone that walks into the shop to or behind there face. I should’ve left then but I stayed. I made 30 cents more than Min wage for being a TL. (which he took away january first) and I thought everything was okay. until it was me and him working one night and we made over 1k in food. I received $105 worth of tips that night and my manager gave me 45$ which really made me mad since he was told not to take tips by his boss. My final straw was last night. from 11am to 9 pm we made 34$ in tips total. At 7pm when my manager left we had made 24$ in tips and he decided to take 30$ out of the till leaving me with a 2$ tip at 9 pm. He stole money from the store. He continued to take tips when he didn’t do any work. The entire crew is quitting because of how [lousy] he treats us.
I would have also called his boss and asked if they know hes a thief... after all, if he'll steal from you, he'll steal from them.
tell HIS boss, ffs... hes been told to not do something and hes still doing it. TATTLE on his dumb thieving ass
Report him to management for stealing your tips. Can you report him to the police for theft?
“It is very important to keep everything in writing. Over time, we tend to forget our interactions. By keeping things in writing, we can better remember situations and better argue for ourselves when it comes to asking for a raise and a promotion,” Sam stressed that leaving a paper trail is very important and can help avoid a lot of potential headaches.
According to Eddy Ng, the Smith Professor of Equity and Inclusion at Queen’s University, there are certain traits that can help workers distinguish between a good leader and a bad boss. Strong leaders are humble and always try to do the right thing. Weak leaders are insecure, ego-driven, and change their minds. In short, what can set apart a good, capable boss is that they focus on supporting their employees.

They cannot withhold pay, even if they say you weren't a good worker/etc. If you were really a bad worker, they can pay you and fire you, but they cannot withhold the pay. 3. You can discuss wages! Don't ever let an employer tell you different! 4. Look EXTRA CLOSELY at your responsibilities if you are classified as an "independent contractor" vs. "employee". The former benefits companies, so many try to incorrectly class employees. 5. Know the difference between being an "exempt" and "unexempt" employee. Again, employers will often try to class people as exempt when they don't actually qualify, because then they don't have to offer overtime.
I read this one before and this isn't actually on the employer, but the ex-employee. The whole thing played out online and was later removed. The employee thought she should only have to go in "when she feels like it", having missed more time than they actually worked, unrelated t the aforementioned illness. She also walked out on a shift, multiple times, the last one when she quit, and absolutely refused to return the keys and uniforms (uniforms being less important, of course) for weeks. It is NOT against the law to withhold pay while waiting for company property to be returned in OH (most states). This was just some entitled spoiled brat who got called out for being a bad employee and thought she could make it go viral. When it backfired, she removed the whole thing, lol.
It does sound a bit dodgy, but that's why in my country we have precise rules for that. Are you, or are you not allowed to quit/fire someone on the spot? Over here it's not a thing, so no confusion about it. Seems like in the US it's easy to fire someone on the spot, but quitting like that can get tricky. When expensive trainings are offered, there is usually a stipulation in the contract, that you then have to keep working for a company for X amount of time or pay off the training (I'm not talking about essential work training, just some extras, of course). And keeping someone's wage hostage is not allowed over here, no matter what they do as two wrongs don't make a right.

After several months of having my vacation time off requests denied, my staff being fired and not replaced and my work hours increased without my consent, I walked into my boss' office and handed her my resignation letter. I was giving 4 weeks notice, which I thought was nice. She looks at me, says "No. I can't deal with this today.", packed her stuff and left for a day of shopping on company time.
I went to my office, cleaned it out, finished off a day's work and put my keys in her mailbox.
The next day I got a call from HR saying they were giving me the day off without pay to think about what I did and that I was expected to be at work the next day.
No thanks.
2 years later i'm living my dream life.

If you're company gives 3% when inflation is 1%, and they still give 3% today then I'm okay with that. On average they are giving you a raise. They wouldn't give a negative raise if inflation were negative either. However, if a company gives a 1% raise when inflation is 1%, then I expect them to give 7.8% when inflation is 7.8%!
I posted a jokey comment on one of our boards and management had someone go through the video footage for a day or so to find out who did it. I didn't get in real trouble but was talked to about how "no one" found my comment funny and that it was contributed to getting the other shifts spun up. Everyone I told about my comment thought it was funny. It was only management who didn't think it was funny. Plus, now I've been warning people that management will review the video for stupid stuff.
While people certainly deserve raises fairly regularly assuming they aren't just skating by, you can't just throw raises as people and expect all the problems to go away. Everyones wages at a grocery store shoot.up? So do prices. Guess where the staff shop? Its needed but its not a one shot fix all. Change has to start at the top down. Inflation out of control? Top 3 people at the company could in most cases take a 3% pay cut and cover maybe ALL employees 5% raise.... inflation is not your bosses fault, they are affected by it too in the costs of goods/time etc.
That is an excellent point. A relatively tiny pay cut for a lot of the upper executive levels across the globe redistributed to give many more people at lower frontline levels in the same companies, across the globe resulting in an actual decent wage rise, will mean more jobs stay viable in an economy because people living on/below poverty line and without any discretionary money do not go out for meals or to the cinema or grab a coffee or buy insurance. You need extra money circulating to keep things afloat. The covid support payments thrown around in 2020 showed that quite clearly
Load More Replies...Inflation affects business costs too. Perhaps in a big corporation, but there are some small businesses that would be struggling to pay existing bills with their rising costs. That line "I allow you to see your family once a week" is a huge red flag.
"I allow you to see your family once a week?!" Why didn't you quit sooner?
I don't understand these bosses. Employees are scheduled to work when they are scheduled to work. You can ask if someone can come in on their day off, but you cannot force them. The DEFAULT is that they are not working except for the hours they are in - not that they are working unless you give them time off. These managers are godawful.
This is another text that HR and CEO need to see. I know a lot of people in my organization used to suffer in silence... either afraid of repercussions or with the "it won't make any difference" fatalism. I was known in my company as "Mr.Roberts" because I was willing to fight... I got a lot of concessions from mgmt... not all, but enough. I got a 25% raise, and I got pay raises for our entire department to bring us up to market value. I got us more PTO and a more flexible schedule. You never know if you don't try, and even if the worst happens, you lost a crappy job but gained valuable experience.

“Employees need to communicate what they need (tools) or work conditions (autonomy) in order for them to perform optimally when working with a controlling boss. Employees need to convey what they can and are able to perform,” he said.

Managers who can't manage doing the "low-level" work, should not be managing the people who CAN manage to do that work.
The last few years have shown just how much the world depends on what they call "low-level" work.
Load More Replies...Managers should be the first to do low level work if it needs doing, and thats me speaking from experience, doing "low level work" daily as someone with a management title..
Yes. It's good for business, morale, and keeps managers humble and they relate better to their staff. Our staff is always surprised when the managers jump in when short, busy, or give a break. We're happy to do it, we are nothing without our staff.
Load More Replies..."You don't force the managers to do the low level work" I call BS. If there aren't enough employees working at the time, a good manager will help them unless they literally can't. I work as a cashier and I have seen two or three of my managers at once on register during busy hours.
Yep. It's a pretty consistent theme in this thread. Managers are short staffed because someone called out and they try to force people to come in on their day off or cancel their vacation. Sure, no harm in calling around and asking people if they want to pick up a shift. If the answer is no, then guess who needs to work that extra shift? The manager. That's what a good manager does. You got extra pay for that promotion and it came with extra responsibilities. If you want your ICs to respect you, you have to work harder than they do. Another one I see often that boils my blood: managers that expect the employee to find someone to cover their shift. No my dude. That's a manager job. Earn your pay.
Load More Replies..."force the managers to do low-level work." You'd think he'd have a little more respect after seeing what his employees go through.
You can rest assured that the managers didn't do any "low-level work". They just delegated more work to fewer employees.

Boss Ate Half Of My Lunch While I Was In The Bathroom
I went to the bathroom and came back to find my lunch box open and half of my meal missing. Confused, I asked about what happened from an older lady who sits next to me. She responded that our boss came in, noticed the food on the table, took half of it on a plate, and left for a meeting. I got angry and complained about how unacceptable that was, but she told me to just shrug it off and that it’s “to be expected”. I mean..???

At my old insurance company stealing lunches was a firing offense. Report this lunatic lunch thief to his manager.
I probably wouldn't have had the nerve, but my first thought was going straight into that meeting and asking the boss in front of everyone if I could kindly have my lunch back? It probably wouldn't do much for MY reputation, but it also wouldn't do much for his, either.
Apparently it's to be expected that your boss is a thief, but also expected that no one of any quality would be working for someone like that so find a better place to work asap.
I can't even comprehend doing this. Say the lunch was worth $10. There is no difference in doing this and seeing two $5s on your desk and stealing one. It's flat out theft.
Unfortunately, just because someone is incredibly skilled and talented at work doesn’t automatically make them a good leader. Managing people well is another ball game entirely. Alas, not all bosses are true leaders, even if they have all the power. Similarly, you might find leaders lower down in the company’s hierarchy who inspire their coworkers but don’t have much official authority.

Mine's a keeper too. My boss is the same (though she modestly claims to not be a "boss"). Different company, but similar. She will call us and check up on us regularily to see if we think we should come back to the station. It's usually only ever snow and ice related. The call is ours to make on individual happenstances whether or not we feel safe to deliver (ex. localized flooding, unplowed/sanded, washouts, etc) If it's an anticipated weather system, the company will make the call ahead of time. All that is expected of us is to make the attempt. Tomorrow is another day quite frankly.
Load More Replies..."Warning" means there's a tornado Close and you are in imminent danger. These people are disgusting.
The sirens are a warning alright! To get the heck off the street and in a basement to protect yourself. Sirens only go off when a funnel has been spotted! Who is this person communicating with him?
This reminds me of the recent tornado deaths in the Amazon facility where they were told to continue working or be fired.
This Amazon place was in Edwardsville, IL, just up the road from me. The side of the warehouse that was sheared off is still being repaired. To this day I wonder what the warehouse management was thinking. Tornados were touching down all over the place and there was plenty of warning they were headed our way. Sirens going off means funnel cloud detected seek shelter NOW. So many people shrug off warnings like it’s no big deal. This happened in December so all I can think of was Amazon wanted those Christmas packages out fast.
Im Not Allowed To Quit
hi everyone! basically what the title says. im 17 years old, still in high school, and working 40+ hours a week. i just put in my letter of resignation (NOT my two weeks) and my boss spammed called me saying that i wasn’t allowed to quit and if i do i’ll never be allowed to work at another insert fast food place here again. im so pissed
Utter BS. Most fast food franchises are FRANCHISES. Corporate does not have any interest in a hiring blacklist because that's what the franchisees are meant to deal with. So yeah, you might not get a job at another of this idiot's places, but would you really want to work for this idiot? He holds no power over the hiring practices of any other franchisee (he might be able to influence, but he certainly can't outright tell them no). He also holds no power over you. You are allowed to quit. If the only threat he has is to not allow you to work for him again, that's his loss. You will move on to better things (including rival fast food places if that's the direction you wish to go in)
My wife got blacklisted from a franchise store of her current company because she put in 30 days of notice and left on the 30th day instead of coming in for three days extra, which would have prevented me from getting necessary and, as it turned out, life saving medical care. Her boss didn't care that I needed this medical care on the appointed date because, get this, her subordinate driver who she was dating had his birthday party during those three days and she wanted to spend it with him. She tried to threaten that she would give my wife a bad reference but she's spent her entire career networking and building loyalty, so the corporate managers knew her ahead of time and knew about the situation. They didn't care for the franchise store's attitude much after that, and now the old boss is angry because nobody believes her when she tells them my wife didn't give notice before quitting. Gee, I wonder why.

I appreciate where people are coming from but this whole great resignation thing is a bit of a joke. Theres a lot of very legit stories from people being treated poorly at work but a lot of them are just egotistical, arrogant young boys who take everything as a sleight to their person, not realizing you will take your licks at 99% of the jobs out there in one form or another... and a lot of those stories they seek to do as much collateral damage as possible that they won't have to deal with, and brag about it. Absurd...
You know what’s really absurd? Your lack of understanding of the problem. You very clearly don’t understand this issue you’re trying to comment on. I would wager that you’re a Boomer and were raised with this message hammered into you, so you can’t comprehend any other message, even though it is no longer realistic in 2022. The only time I can see this being legal to ask is if there is a non-compete agreement. If you are quitting at one IT company to go work for another IT company or you are starting your own IT company that will be in direct competition with your former employer. That's why, whenever a company puts that into their hiring agreement, I pass.
That's a good point. But I'm guessing since the boss stopped asking, that's probably not the case here.

My Boss Is Asking Me To Come Into Work While On Vacation
I just received an early morning text from my manager asking me to come in. I politely responded that I am on vacation. She said that she knows but that they are short-staffed due to the recent snow storm, and that she knows that I live close enough to walk to work, even in the snow. I asked how me working today would work with me getting PTO, and she said, “an employee cannot work and get pto on the same day so you will not get pto for today”. I am just going to say no. This is silly. One time I texted her a question without realizing she was on vacation and she responded with, “I AM ON VACATION. DO NOT EVER CONTACT ME WHILE I AM ON VACATION. PLEASE RESPECT MY TIME”…I am tempted to say the same thing to her now
Update: damn, some people are mean. I got this message from somebody on here: “get a real job you gay loser, then your boss will respect you enough to not call you in on pto. Or as much as a person can respect a gay”. Uncalled for homophobia…Goddamn.
I ended up just saying “I can’t come in” and the only response I got was “K”. While I would love to throw her words back at her, I have to go in and deal with her as my manger when I get back to work. Next time, I will just not respond at all. LESSON LEARNED.
I'd use auto reply with "Dear Sender, I am on vacation from xx.xx.xx till xx.xx.xx and will be available only on xx.xx.xx.". Then the boss would spam you and you could say: "I quit as you spammed my mails WHILE VACATION."
I quit a job for almost exactly the same reason. I hadn't had a proper day off in months because I was helping with the "put together " and launch of a new facility. Two weeks after grand opening, I finally got to take a day off and then all afternoon, my manager was blowing up my phone to get my help with an emergency that was going down there at work. I never hesitated, walked her through all kinds of stuff, called her back to make sure things went okay, the whole 9 yards. Cut to her day off, and the new girl she hired didn't show up. I texted her just to see if by chance she had heard from her, and promptly received a text back telling me that it was her day off and that I needed to stop texting her and figure it out on my own. I did. I quit.
He ought to do what my coworkers and I did when I was working (thankfully I am finally retired). One guy blocked all of the work phone numbers including the boss’s on his phone, others had the recorder pick up all phone calls and some of the others instructed family members if work called to say the person wasn’t home and didn’t know when they’d be home.
I'm sorry I missed the part about some Boomer calling you a gay loser. Disgusting people..

In Europe you do not explain to your boss why you are calling in sick. It's illegal for the boss to ask you about your sickness.
I had a manager complain that I always used up my sick leave. My response was that I was sick. He ended up dying in his 40s of an easily preventable disease because he basically never went to the doctor (except for that one last time).
I had a manager who didn't like me coming in sick, who then also got mad when I called in. Apparently I was supposed to magically not get sick when exposed to germs.

Huh. That’s my state’s minimum wage, and somehow we’re running a budget surplus.

A Competing Company Is Offering Us 20 Percent More To Work For Them. Management's Response:
How to be offensive, petty and pathetic at the same time. Brilliant.

I Just Quit My Job Because I Lost My Right To Lunch Break
Been working there for 4 months. I was never late and always ready like 15 min before my shift starts. Today I had a tough morning, in a bad mood and I was 6 minutes late for work. My manager called me to his office, complaining about why I didn't call him to say I'm going to be late. I told him that I didn't think about calling him as I knew that I'll only be late for a bit.
After going back and forth, he told me that I'm not allowed to take my lunch break because I'm late and it's super busy. I didn't bring my lunch, so I asked if I could at least grab a sandwich before starting my shift. He agreed, but only to cut half an hour of my pay..
I agreed and left "to grab a sandwich". It's been an hour and a half now since I left and I still haven't returned. My manager just called me and I told him I quit. I don't regret it (yet?)
Wish me luck!!
I’m A Caregiver/Dsp For Developmentally Disabled Adults. My Boss Just Scheduled Me A 20hr Shift Without My Consent So I Quit
I worked in this industry ten years ago and it was short staffed then. I can only imagine how bad it is now. In my experience low wages and no appreciation.
I hate the “guilt trip”. Just s**t up, you brought this on yourself.
My Boss Denied My Medical Request A Month In Advance, First Time Ever Even Requesting A Day Off
Laughing in European where you don't apply for paid time off for medical purposes but simply notify the employer that you'll be having an examination and won't be working on such and such day. The employer knows he can't even ask you why you are getting an examination.

Nope he just set his self up for a large lawsuit!!! One paragraph is about to change the whole trajectory of the companies and the "hiring manager" life.

I Was Told To Post This Here. I Worked At This Store For 4 Years (Longer Than Anyone In The Entire Store) And We Recently Got A New General Manager. This Is How She (Yellow) Speaks To Us In Our Work Group Chat (I Am Purple). I Quit After This Conversation
No kidding eh. Poor blue, “I was just wanting to know if anyone could cover my shift.” 😂

N drink all night but I kinda feel her not for the Covid call out but because of the one who admitted he calling out because he stayed up drinking all night. He clearly didn't care about his employment. All she did was make it known that she knew they were up partying and drinking all night. It's a three hour shift like Burgundy said u can have fun but be considerate. They not even working full schedules sounds like yellow listen to demands and actually tried to be supportive they got raises, what they need a three week break for when they work 3 hours a day???? I'm with yellow on this one I think I hopped off the fence.
Yes. I would like to try your job. Enjoy learning how it feels working under someone who does the same s**t as you. Because you'll be treated like that once you're gone
Oh my god i had a seizure seeing *yellow* speak like that and then be hypocritical and speak like that to them.
Never Told A Boss Off Like This. And It Felt Amazing

I absolutely believe it. I worked in IT at the corporate office for a large clothing manufacturer. There were 7 of us for nearly 2,000 in our building, so sometimes it took a bit to get to certain requests. And of course some requests also took longer because they had to go through multiple tiers of approval. Most of the time, we just took them in the order they were submitted. Far and away, the people who put up the most fuss that we weren't immediately working on their request were middle managers. It's like, yeah sure, there are 20 ppl ahead of you, but I'll drop everything and run to your desk. If they put in a request for a new monitor and they saw someone else get one before them, they'd complain. Well that person put their request in a month ago and it just came in. OK they must not need it that bad, so you can give me theirs and then they can have mine when it comes in. Um that's not how it works. Their request went through all the proper steps, you just put yours in an hour ag

I work remotely from home on a project an hour away from my city. She wants people to come into the office of my hometown to work... REMOTELY on the project from the office. Furthermore, my internet connection is far better at home than the crappy one at the office. Less interruptions for useless conversations which drains me (she might be an energy vampire when I think of it), better diet and my mental (and financial) health greatly improved since I started working from home. If she forces the move back to the office, I'll quit. I already looking at my options elsewhere and got some good vibes from three other places (a bit less $, but my mental health is more important).
Yep. Upper management at my company keeps pushing for people to come back because they can't get their boots licked on a conference call. I think part of it is also that it's become starkly apparent that most of them add no value. We could lose probably 80% of the managers where I work and we'd still be just fine. If we're in the office, they can pretend to be managing something.

I worked for Hello Fresh in a warehouse for one year and it was THE MOST MISERABLE JOB I have ever had. And I worked for AMAZON before that. The environment we worked in was refrigerated which by itself was very uncomfortable (no uniforms provided btw so had to buy my own, don't have a lot of cold weather clothes, I live in TX). We were only allowed a 15 minute break and a 45 minute break in a 10.5 hour shift which was not much time to warm up. If you were longer than ~5 minutes in the bathroom they'd yell at you, so no warming up there either. HR was practically nonexistent, they had no phone number you could call and were only open for you to speak with them a few hours per day despite the fact that it was a 24/7 operation. The training was practically nonexistent so new people frequently slowed everything down which of course we got in trouble for. We would be asked to stay over to meet demand constantly. They forked over nearly a 50% raise and it wasn't enough to keep people.
I used to work as a hostess at a restaurant for ten years. Everything ran smoothly when I was there during the busiest part of our week. I was organized, meticulous, customers and coworkers loved me. I came in last minute when they needed me at 5:00 a.m. I was to be off at 2:00 p.m. The guy who came in at 7:00 to assist me was not doing anything. The manager kept popping up asking why we were so behind I said - I can't do it all myself and John is standing over there doing nothing. I can't get him to move. The manager goes over and tells him to go home, now I was supposed to stay until 4:00. I told the manager you are rewarding him for being lazy and he said no - I'm rewarding you and punishing him.
