I rely heavily on lip reading, specially if people have an unfamiliar accent (I'm not a native English speaker) so mask does affect comprehension, not hearing; still, masks all the way!

I think it either muffles the sound a bit or prevents our nasal passages or facial bones from picking up the subtle vibrations of speech. Hell of a lot better than Covid though

That's exactly what it is... you didn't realize how much you were lip reading prior. This is very common with early hearing loss; dealt with it all the time in nursing prior to Covid... I have the same issue. It's not that the mask is causing the issue, it's that your brain was compensating in a way you weren't aware of prior to people wearing them. Additionally, voices can be muffled.

I kind of like the masks, actually. Some people have bad breath, some people have no dental insurance (me). I'm hugely awkward about my dental situation, but there's nothing I can do about it and still live indoors. So the mask was a blessing in disguise, as I was able to interact with a confidence that I don't normally have. So yes, I found something to like about covid, lol. But it doesn't excuse a lifetime of employers from neglecting my ability to take care of myself. I'm 56, have a good job, and never had insurance. My jeep is better insured than I am, lol.

Too many people harbor a basic misunderstanding of how the immune system works. You don't develop antibodies until AFTER you've encountered a pathogen. Vaccines are intended to expose you to a harmless form of the pathogen, so you can develop antibodies without actually having the disease.

Fun fact: studying science will NOT make you immune to believing nonsense. And uh, don't be so quick to ridicule fear over 5G. No, it probably doesn't give anyone cancer. But it's kinda creepy that we're globally implementing something the side-effects of which are fairly poorly researched. The fault is we need to change our educational model (this includes grown-ups) to teach how to think instead of what to know. I am a master of trivia but it doesn't matter if I know the wrong things and don''t know how to unlearn them. In the age of internet where every post is possibly true, too much of our population doesn't have the tools to determine veracity. There are 43 million videos on YouTube saying the Earth is flat. If I watch 1, the algorithm will show me more of the same. Many of the people who believe it aren't stupid - they were never taught how to think critically and without that lesson, you don't have the skills to find the right video to teach you how to think critically.

The amount of ignorance about vaccines has saddened me deeply. FYI, if you ever got exposed to chickenpox, you *want* that shingles vax. You really do. If you travel, you want vaccinations for diseases you are still unlikely to get but don't want (yellow fever, anyone?). If you think a vaccine somehow ruins your life or makes you contagious or whatever? Then you do not understand the science, and I invite you to be educated on the evolution of vaccines, vaccine technology, and the eradication of disease in general. If you react to these words by immediately saying, "I won't trust that source/info!"... Then please do not ask for medical attention for a disease you could have avoided getting and/or spreading. You can't trust us medical types, after all, right? (that last sentence was, indeed, sarcastic.) I'm so tired of this BS... my friend has been on anti psychotics and anti depression meds for years and years, he trusts them fully knowing the side effects; like not being able to get it up. He knows what happens when he tries to lower his dosage or stop taking them in order to try and get it up. Euclid was wrong. There are no straight lines; everything is curved. It’s just that the curve is so slight (because of the size of the Earth) it’s imperceptible to our eyes. So this level only looks like it’s on a flat and level surface. But it’s actually reading such a tiny curve that, to our eyes, it looks flat and level. My mind was blown when I read that, but then I thought about it, and it actually makes sense.

I was born with a rare disease that causes my body to produce too low of an enzyme level. I go to have an infusion every two weeks which gives my body the enzymes it is not NATURALLY producing. If I don't, it causes me to be in more pain and my organs to shut down and then I die. I'm not about to refuse the infusions because they aren't naturally produced by my body.

Because the force of gravity pulling on the bug is less than the strength of the bug's body. This isn't all that amazing. Gravity is funny in that the force of gravity is proportional to the mass of the thing it acts on. A bug has very little mass, so the force of gravity acting on it is very small. Yes and no. Even reading "trash" fiction can help you develop empathy and critical thinking skills which are good thing. Reading some things isn't healthy but, like extreme comspiracy theories and sites the reinforce things like homophobia and racism, misogyny, but lets face it, the folks that read those kinds of things that gets them in this Bored Panda list aren't reading a lot of books.

A live or attenuated virus does not produce virus in the respiratory system. There are no live virus molecules to cough or sneeze out of the body. There is absolutely no way to spread influenza with any sort of vaccine, live or not.

In fairness to this post and I hate to say it but. there are two kinds of flu vacines : Inactivated influenza vaccines that contain flu viruses that have been killed, so they can’t cause the flu. Live influenza vaccine (LAIV or FluMist) nasal sprays that contain a live but weakened form of the virus. However in life, if you are showing symptoms of being sick take a few days away from people if you can.. as for advertising your vacinated status or two weeks isolation I would say if its needed the medical person would advise on the day.

Yes, my immunosuppressed friend couldn't see her grandkids for a couple of weeks after they had the live flu vaccine (it's a nasal spray I think) because they could potentially pass the live virus on to her. Most people get the inactive virus jab though so there's no issue with passing that on. Staying home when sick is always the best course of action (not always possible for some people though).

I lived in a neighborhood with a large dolphin population. They were nothing but sweet and courteous and polite. Once when my grandma was sick our neighbors (dolphins)cooked her dinner every night for a week. These kinds of blanket statements about dolphins are not only ugly and wrong, but they encourage bigots to harrass and even harm innocent dolphins just trying to live their lives. Be better.

True (mainly groups of young males that do this iirc), but they've also been known to protect people in the oceans from sharks. I met a former federal agent who was involved in the Elian Gonzalez case who said that Gonzalez had been surrounded by a group of dolphins when he was picked up and it was believed that they were being protective. I don't know the Gonzalez story to be true obviously, but that is what the agent told me.

I think those faces are just shade creating screens and not actually solid, though they will impair vision. The sign obviously will block. However, solid door vans don't have rear view mirrors - having driven them it's not that difficult. Must have door mirrors though.

Related, but off-topic situation: While kayaking with my dog for the first time, she moved too far in one direction and flipped us in about two feet of water. I landed pretty hard on barnacle covered rocks (I live on an island in The Puget Sound). When I got us situated on the kayak again, I realized just how badly my knee was torn up… and I thought, “Eh. It’s salt water. It’s supposed to be good for you and healing. I’ll be fine.” Not fine. It took both oral and topical antibiotics to be “fine” again. Lesson learned!

I'm going out on a limb here and saying this post isn't actually DRASTICALLY stupid. This is because A: She's right in that if the sun were actually made of fire, it couldn't burn because there is no oxygen in space. Now as to WHY she might not know the sun is plasma: A lot of children's books do in fact portray the sun as being a fireball. Even some animated cartoons refer to the sun as a great fire. So right off the bat we have children who can easily think the sun is fire. Then ADULT media. Adult movies and books rarely refer to the sun as made of plasma, if at all. So, while she should have learned in science class what plasma is and how it makes up the sun, she has grown up in a world of media that says "Fire." It doesn't matter how old you are, if something has been ingrained in your mind since toddlerhood, it's there to stay.

The sun isn't on fire, it's constantly collapsing in on itself under its own gravity, which fuels nuclear fusion, which exerts an explosive expansion. The two forces cancel each other out so long as the sun (or any star) still has fuel.

Totally related, refers to colloidal silver, which is useless to drink and makes you skin blue if you take it for long. evolution is based on the necessity for adaptation, to say that someone is 'technically' less evolved is actually incorrect as an assumption. the skin of people native to tropical zones would not adapt to the temperate sunlight because it made no impact anyway. just as having blue or brown eyes doesn't make you so (blue eyes evolved primarily due to a lack of vitamin d)

My parents both caught covid, survived. They are vaccinated. Mum 79 yrs with several comorbidities, diabetes, heart failure outpatient. Dad 84 yrs old stroke survivor, with vascular dementia and constant aspiration issues, seizures etc. I am their carer, 54 didn't get covid at all. Also fully vaccinated. I thank God I still have them and for the amazing science and doctors plus nursing staff that made it possible for them to survive.

Absurdly this is not as wrong as it could be. Tomatoes are a prime source of potassium, which can regulate some heart problems, ginger has been a traditonal remedy for congestions for centuries, walnuts are rich in unsaturated fat acids, which, in small amounts, are a kind of "brain food", and carrots do contain lots of vitamin B2, which does play a role in sight, and beta-caroten, which also is good for the eyes. Unfortunately whoever wrote this chart felt the need to fill in the blanks with different vegetables just by looks, thus turning a useful chart into a nonsense one.

Oranges have been proven in studies to help prevent breast cancer, carrots contain beta-carotene, a substance that the body converts to vitamin A, an important nutrient for eye health. etc... Autism has not magically become more common. It's just become more commonly recognised. When I was a kid back in the 90s, if you had autism there was a very good chance you'd just be written off as "slow" or "badly behaved". I would know - I'm on the spectrum and before I was finally diagnosed at 16 I was just seen as "difficult".

There are plenty such scams. Also magnets that rotate forever. That’s not how physics work though. Magnets have a field, it’s not linear. This means that the setup will have areas of resistance and atraction. These are always either balanced or on the negative side, means you need to put energy in to keep it running. Either via a battery, or other external source.

Temperature and Heat are 2 different things. As simply as I can put it: The Thermosphere is one of the highest points of our atmosphere. The pressure levels at the very top of it are so low that it is practically a vacuum (space), so there are very few molecules. Heat is created when molecules vibrate. So, while the temperature is very high, the heat is very low. Think like, your oven is on, but the door is open. You can't bake your cookies on the other side of the kitchen.

That's because of their misinterpretation of the bible. Or they listened to someone else's interpretation of the bible. NOWHERE in the bible* is homosexuality (or any orientation) mentioned as a sin. NOWHERE in the bible* is homosexuality described as an illness. That's why the prayers are not working, because even god was ok with it! I challenge anyone to show me different. *There are a few modern editions that clearly use the word 'homosexuals' but that is due to a mistranslation from earlier versions.

5 people on my moms side of the family, 3 on my dads. My wife has a couple family members, and a few more family friends who've died. The most aggravating part of this ongoing clusterfuck of human idiocy, is the fact that no matter how horrifying the death and infection count is shown to be, it's SOOO much higher. During the first 6 months of the pandemic studies found that, on average global deaths were 30-50K higher, per month than projected, and these didn't go towards the total. In NYC alone, the daily number of deaths was 229 per day, for months, while the number attributed to covid was 21-25, with non-pandemic numbers being 10-11. Deaths that didn't happen in a hospital, were not counted, because they weren't tested. Since test were unavailable for so long, even those happening in hospitals were uncounted. The most depressing thing however is given how stupid humanity has shown itself to be, covid has really, really underperformed, and it never goes where it should.

This is going to sound terrible but sometimes I wish that the virus was far more deadly amongst the ignorant and un-vaccinated. Basic evolution. The bubonic plague first came about in Europe in the mid 1300s. During its long deadly time it killed between 1/3 and 1/2 of the entire population, including the nobles. During this time the idea of "peasants" completely ended, and humanity blossomed. Art, music, science and the more true equality of humanity happened. No plague, no Mozart. No plague no Leonardo da Vinci.

I have been saying for most of the pandemic (as well as conveying it in a comment above) that the worst part of covid is that it has drastically underperformed, particularly given how f*****g stupid so many people insist on being. I feel zero guilt in having, nor expressing this view. Spanish flu wiped out 50-100 million before humanity has antibiotics, which was 5% of the global population. We ended up with a rounding error, despite a global unwillingness to take meaningful action to stop this nonsense.

Living with a severely suppressed immune system, wearing a mask in public has kept me healthy. Since the mask mandates went into effect, I've only been hospitalized ONCE. Between 2017 and 2021 I was hospitalized with one infection after another, for a total of 36 hospitalizations in a four year period. 17 of those times I had infection induced sepsis. Masks save lives.

Hm. My housemate verbally threatened a plant of mine that was looking pretty sickly and it not only got better it has quadrupled in size and looks amazing now. Now I’m so confused!

Well, "Red 40" (C18H14N2Na2O8S2), also knowns as Allura Red, indeed is under suspicion to impair activity and attention in children in high doses, and is known to trigger allergies in asthma and neurodermitis patients. For this reason, is currently illegal in some european countries, while in others warning labels are mandatory (as for most azo dyes). So while certainly being exaggerated, this post does really fit into the nonsense category, as there actually is a scientific base behind this (Also see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allura_Red_AC).

But it's pretty obvious by the lack of color in the stalks that they just recently put the celery into the water, using a shriveled stalk for the red. And if they used food coloring, it wasn't Red 40. Total hoax post, except for accurate reference to danger of Red 40.

Ignoring the fact that these are just pieces of celery removed from the plant that would die in plain water , the final message isn't wrong; artificial colourings can make people hyper active

This is actually kinda true. As a parent of a child with autism and ADHD we were told to avoid foods with red dye 40 because it can increase hyperactivity in children with ADHD. When she does consume red dye items she does get very hyperactive so we avoid them.

It’s very true. I have both ASD and ADD and all artificial colorings, at least all the ones used regularly, have a substantial effect. It’s not so much hyperactivity as that I can’t control my emotions anymore, while it’s in my system anything even remotely emotional or upsetting triggers a full-on tantrum. I will literally start crying at the acknowledgments section in a magazine. And it’s not like I’m tantrum age anymore, but apparently I had a terrible time as a child for unknown reasons, it’s probably because of eating dyes. It’s really annoying.
