Professional Photographer Captures Perfectly Posed Birds, And Here Are The Best 58 Photos
Professional photographer Leila Jeffreys is quite well known in the world of bird photography, as she takes amazing and intricate photos of birds close up as we’ve never seen before. The Sydney-based photographer began her journey over a decade ago and never stopped. She is most well known for her photo series called “High Society.”
As a child, Jeffreys was taught by her father how to rescue birds and took bird-focused nursing classes, an experience that resulted in a deep understanding of wildlife and helped her take these incredible photos. Her elegant photographs of owls, eagles, cockatiels, and even colorful doves seem to capture the essence of each animal's personality, portraying many of them with surprisingly human characteristics.

I love how the feather colors don’t gradually change from one to the next but come in nice big blocks!
I hate it when they don't post the name of the animal.
Load More Replies...A Marvel of nature! Yet we can't even get the infrastructure bill with environmental protections passed! I am feeling so ashamed of my species in the face of beauty like this bird. We've ruined so much of earth's beauty with our greed.
No, it’s a glossy tailed black cockatoo. I get them all around my house and black tailed cockatoos don’t have the yellow spots.
Load More Replies...Wow, they look like they are covered in little speckles of gold or something..
What an stunning bird. It's feathers look like a starry night sky.
Golden Eagle...found in countries all over the world, unlike most birds, which tend to be regional.
🐥Yeah, a full picture would help with identifying some of these because many birds are so very similar you can only tell them apart by wing shape or tail colors, etc.🐣🐤
Load More Replies...It’s a wedge tail eagle. Named for the shape of their tail as they soar overhead (in north central Victoria)
exactly, the same expression than a villain in James Bond :D
Load More Replies...FUN FACT: There are no structurally blue feathers...the blue comes from reflective light hitting the otherwise gray feather.
This is a type of Southeast Asian oriole, but I no longer remember which one. They’re really common in Malaysia and southern Thailand
this is a Regent’s Bowerbird. check out their beautiful and elaborately woven and decorated ‘love nests!’
🎼🎶Yeah, Uh-Huh, You Know What it is. Black and Yellow, Black and Yellow, Black and Yellow🎵🎶
In my book, the most beautiful pigeon in the world!

I wonder why some birds have those growths at the base of their beaks?
He's giving that look like "really Janet, you want to see the manager because I won't accept your expired coupon from a different store?"
Load More Replies...FUN FACT: Owls’ eyes are fixed in place, which is why they can turn their heads 280° to either side.
It’s a type of barn owl, but I wasn’t able to track down which one or where they’re found.
Load More Replies...They’re way too big to be classified as beady!
Load More Replies...The Budgerigar (budgie for short) or Parakeet are native to Australia, but enough have escaped in Florida to create a wild population. They're the most popular pet bird in the world (especially in the UK) and are the #3 pet after cats & dogs. They have about 3,000 feathers on that tiny body and 3 eyelids. They can be taught to whistle, sing and talk. They can live 8-12yrs but have relatively fragile health, & are especially susceptible to temperature changes. They are very social animals that can become depressed when alone.
BUDGIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🦅I'm guessing Kestrel 🤔 a type of falcon that eats small mammals, lizards and large insects 🐀🐦🐿🐍🦎🪳🦗🪲🪱
Where I used to live they'd have a nest in the back yard and every now and then a fledgling would fly into the house and I'd have to rescue them by moving them outside before they panicked and hurt themselves inside. They're smaller than they seem - somewhere between a Senegal and an Amazon. The nails weren't as bad as my yellow nape's either - I swear he hides a file and sharpens his toes every night.
Load More Replies...Major Mitchell's. Great picture, but the impressively colored crest is hidden.
There’s a little sneak-preview from the upper one!
Load More Replies...Does his crest only go up when he lands? Or does he raise it for mood expression the way sulfur cresteds do?
Load More Replies...The Budgerigar on the left is a male, you can tell by the blue cere (skin around nostrils, blue or lavender for males). The female's have a cere that's colored from white to brown, as on the right. It shows at around 1yr old.
🦅Kestrels are known for the ability to "hover" at around 10-20 meters over open fields and swoop down on prey🦅
That's a problem with a few of these pictures, so many birds are similar and you need to see "the whole picture" to differentiate 🐥🐣🐤
Load More Replies...Purple Ground Dove, found in Papua/New Guinea and the Solomon Islands
I agree about those rich red hues too! Made me so appreciative of my vision and the photographer's skill.
Load More Replies...🐧🐧Puffins (auks) aren't considered strictly monogamous but rarely change partners and tend to return to their same nest each year🐣🐣🐣
I KNEW there was a reason I was so drawn to Puffins! Show me a cute guy that's faithful and you've caught my interest! And if he's kind & affectionate, ...wow! :)
Load More Replies...Puffin fact - they dive to catch fish, and in doing so can have 10+ in their beaks as they collect them. They are very careful to have each fish facing the opposite direction in their beaks, to maximize room., So, head, to the right, tail to the right, head to the right, on and on. Most puffins have a "handedness" as to which way their first fish is caught, then they stack them from there. And they moo like cows!
He's a very handsome specimen, isn't he? (Females don't have the "hairdo".)
Load More Replies...First thing that went through my min? Gosh, bet he'd be a fun date! He just looks like that kind of spirit!
🦅Hawks have "fingers" on their wingtips and Falcons have slender, pointed wings. It's the easiest way to tell them apart🦅
Animal Lady you are very knowledgeable and I love reading your educational tidbits under posts. What kind of bird is this? I see them frequently in my backyard.
Load More Replies...Thanks, that one was stuck on the tip of my tongue, so frustrating 😫
Load More Replies...Did you know that as pets lorikeets can live up to 25 years, in the wild it is likely that their life span is much shorter (around 10 years).
"HAPPY NEW YEAR, hiccup, Oh geez, and I've got to go to work in the morning"
There's a funny clip on YouTube with one trying to mate with a human. Search Stephen Fry kakapo. Sadly these birds are critically endangered.
Fortunately, thanks to a lot of dedicated conservationists not to mention a lot off money, their numbers are beginning to increase. I have never seen one in the flesh but I think they are wonderful. (How come you know so much about birds?)
Load More Replies...I love Kakapo parrots! They look like a character straight out Doctor Seuss.
Kinda looks like a sloth with a beak... Utterly adorable! 🥰 I think I found a new favorite bird
He is a bird native to NZ. They are so naughty but utterly gorgeous.
Load More Replies...Red's don't have the blue beak though, only Cooper's do from what I understand.
Load More Replies...🪞(Not gonna say it, not gonna say it, GOT TO SAY IT... Aargh) It's actually "MAGIC mirror on the wall...🪞
Load More Replies..."Look! Is it a pigeon? Is it a plane? No! It's 'Banana-Birb'!"
Lutino is the yellow version of albino, so without the red eyes she's just a beautifully colored yellow with minimal markings.
Load More Replies...Why does this bird look like a wise old man? He has the wisdom in his eyes
Orange bellied parrot. Critically endangered, from Vic/Tas, Australia
🐦There are soooo many types but I'm guessing it's a young Spectacled Parrotlet🐦
We have one, she came named Rosie. Not real bright, but sweet. Doesn't talk, just goes fhtt, fhtt. She was sold back to the bird store and we knew it was meant to be.
🕊I wonder if this is one of the pigeons that Sher Singh guy was dyeing pink? (Don't worry, the idiot promised to stop.)🕊
So, I can make the eep noise and make all the finch in the pet store eep back! They think someone got out and they are cheering him on! I also see how far I can get from them and they will continue to eep back!
🦓Zebra Finch🐥 are native to Australia, males have a brighter beak that's a deeper red-orange than females', so I'm guessing it's a him🐓
Is this a Zebra Finch? Had some once. Cute little devils and they make a cool sound.
This parrot has a nickname in Spanish, "little Spanish flag", "banderita española", because it has the flag's colours on the crest: red, yellow and red stripes. (I know it comes from Australia though).
Is he as needy as other cockatoos? My U2 is like a powdery ball of Velcro that never wants to get off me.
Load More Replies...We've also got the bird named, Titmouse. (I am also not making that up)
Load More Replies...Like a dragon with a missing scale! I call my husband kaka all the time too!
Have you ever seen the movie "There's something about Mary?"
Load More Replies...🕊Pigeons, doves, rock pigeons and rock doves are all the same thing. Some people differentiate them by size, but scientifically they are the same species🕊
I found one of these in my yard this summer. They're sold as pets, and some jerk let it go to fend for itself. He lived in my bathroom until I could find a rehabber. He was so sweet. They have a melodic "coo" that I'm still humming, as it was so sweet and catchy. It was awesome getting to know one.
Load More Replies...So I had one too many, I still made it home without getting an "FUI (flying under the Influence)"
Yes, can you believe that thing can actually fly? They have one of the craziest tongues too. Can you guess why they're called "Sea Parrots" & "Clown of the Sea"?
Load More Replies...Puffins!! My favorite! I'd love to have a Puffin on my shoulder.
She is silently scheming to poop on your keyboard and monitor at the same exact time…
Once upon a time, there was a little egg about to hatch... Already asleep? Sweet dreams.
This is a very handsome male, you can tell by the blue cere (skin around nostrils, blue or lavender = male & female = white to brown... after 1yr old).
Any guesses on English or regular? I am leaning towards English because of that prideful puffed chest and the large black face dots. We should set him up with #46 - she's definitely ready to mate with the flaking cere.
Load More Replies...He is anxiously awaiting the results of the aforementioned poop challenge
My "Founder looked just like him, the only difference is that "founders black dots were in the shape of hearts.
Cockatoos love to chew and get into trouble, so yup he's probably planning to knock something off a table when the humans turn their backs.
Load More Replies...We have a Lessor Sulphur. Total a s s. I do all the work and the little f'er would just as soon kill me. If something happens to hubby, this little b a s t e r e d is GONE!
No, do it right, Jay, draw me like one of your finch birls
Load More Replies...Check out the Victoria pigeon. Lovely "crown" of feathers on the head. Even regular city dwelling pigeons have some nice iridescence. If you want a laugh, Google for pictures of baby pigeons. They look like fuzzy shrunken pelicans.
Load More Replies...I watched a documentary where they provided wild birds with some plastic thingies to make the nest, ones red, others blue and green. What they wanted to know was if certain colors had more success in attracting female birds to their nests, and they did. There was one bird whose color didn't appeal any and didn't get a girlfriend...
Bowerbirds (which I think this is a subtype of) like doing that. The nests can get quite fancy.
Load More Replies...Ornithology is my favorite thing in the world. My number 1 hobby. The last few years has been difficult and the birds have always helped but I haven't gone to seek them out lately. I haven't gone over my books like I usually do... this portfolio of photographs has rekindled that fire in me, the passion I have for birds is ever lasting. Such beautiful photos by this woman. I'm so happy to have gotten to view them.
These are really nice pictures. I love all things bird as well. If you can, I suggest putting up a bird feeder (just make sure to carefully sanitize it often so you're not spreading diseases). I have one a few feet from my bedroom window and I'll just sit with my dog and watch them. It's so relaxing. Eventually a few will get used to you and interact. I have some that know when the feeder is empty, if they come tap on the window glass I'll come out and fill it up again. They have trained me well, lol.
Load More Replies...It's amazing to me how many different colored and type of eyes that birds can have.
These photos were exceptional. I came here to upvote my new fav birb, the peregrine falcon, and while I enjoyed seeing all the beautiful raptors, I didn't recognize any peregrines. Still, I was not disappointed!
🧞♂️Your wish is our command🧞♂️ (Mary Rose, Nicole & I have been working on it.)
Load More Replies...I love all of these, astounding pictures, good job! Birds have a special spot in my heart, I have had many bird pets (cockatiels, a lovebird and canaries) and every single one had a different personality. Nowadays I have a lovebird who is a little rascal and every day comes up with a new mischief, but he is super affectionated and loves kisses and being petted. I also have two cockatiels, the three of them are free to fly around the living room for many hours a day, but they go to sleep in their cage at night. I had a cockatiel that loved me a lot (and I loved her) and would wake me up from naps with kisses, I miss her so much, she was very special. For me they are family.
Some of the birds you pictured are endanegered, by the way, i love the birdies even though i can never see them in real life, i will always love the species that live in my country.
I would kill for some pigeons. I love them. Wish they would move in and push the doves out.
Technically pigeons are a subspecies of dove if I remember my avian biology correctly.
