Multiple celebrities are using their platforms to protest the push for harsher abortion regulations in a handful of southern states. 'The Good Place' actress Jameela Jamil shared her abortion story in response to Georgia's newest law and now T.V personality Busy Philipps of 'Busy Tonight' has done the same - introducing the hashtag #YouKnowMe.

Philipps has been openly pro-choice and decided to first share the story of her abortion on her show after Georgia signed their "fetal heartbeat" bill into law. "The statistic is that one in four women will have an abortion before age 45. That statistic sometimes surprises people," she said to her audience, "and maybe you’re sitting there thinking, ‘I don’t know a woman who would have an abortion,’ well, you know me I had an abortion when I was 15 years old and I’m telling you this because I’m genuinely really scared for women and girls all over the country.”

The phrase 'you know me' struck a chord with her producer Tina Fey, who encouraged her to start the hashtag. Philipps told The New York Times,"She said, 'I think you hit on something, which is you know me,'" but admitted to the outlet she felt too "overwhelmed" to do it right after opening up about her story. After the Alabama Senate passed another restrictive abortion bill, effectively completely banning it, which has since been signed into law, she tweeted out against it and used #YouKnowMe. She encouraged women to use the hashtag to share their own abortion stories to "end the shame" that surrounds the procedure. Like the similar hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion, it quickly went viral.

That was the more merciful thing to do, It's crazy that after Ireland changes it laws, America is going backwards. We had a citizens assembly first to get all of the information then we voted.

I was bleeding to death in my third month. Dr said I was miscarryng and I will pass. IT DIDNT, I as gettng weaker and weaker and bleeding. Finally Dr told me to go to planned parenthood a get an abortion. My sister helped me pay for it. I was married but we both had been looking for jobs, just out of high school. I was better instantly. Dr told me fetus would have been deformed. A miscarriage usually means something is wrong. I have a wonderful life and had 4 more children. And now I have 7 grandchildren. Don't tap this decision from the woman or the Drs.

When I met my boyfriend, very early into our relationship, one of the FIRST questions I asked was: "Are you ok with abortion"? I was happy to hear that he was. Many people wouldn't begin to ask questions like that early on in a relationship... for fear of being perceived as "a clingy one" or "crazy". But sometimes, the best time to ask is as soon as possible. My boyfriend did not bat an eyelash, change expression, or accuse me of asking a serious question "too soon" and develop commitment issues. I hope other couples can have a similar experience.

In 1973 Roe v Wade was passed by the Supreme Court to legalize abortion, but in 1992 they were faced with Casey v Planned Parenthood which is what ultimately gave individual states more control over how they regulated these abortions. According to the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive health research and policy organisation, the first quarter of 2019 saw at least 28 state legislatures introduce some form of abortion ban. So far seven states introduced restrictive abortion bans, with Alabama being the most recent.

My poor grandma told me of the "female curse", and how she relied to "wise women" to end unwanted pregnancies during her 57 years long marriage. Her narrative was about men being careless and women being expected to "take care of it" somehow. In silence and shame, in pain and often risking their lives with improvised hooks, knitting needles or venomous potions.

This is the unfortunate case where the life of the mother is at stake. Even though it's sad that one human being had to die to save another (otherwise they would both be dead), I don't think that any pro-life person objects to this.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed the controversial abortion bill passed by The Alabama Senate passed the bill 25-6, that could punish doctors who perform abortions with a 99-year or lifetime prison sentence. The law does not allow exceptions for rape and incest, which even some religious supporters like Evangelical leader Pat Robertson said "has gone too far." The law only allows exceptions "to avoid a serious health risk to the unborn child's mother," for ectopic pregnancy and if the "unborn child has a lethal anomaly."

When i was in elementary school, i didn't know the old guard was a pedophile, until one of my school mate pregnant (but adults in school be like "we shouldn't let everyone know this, it will ruin school's fame", so none of the pupils know that old guard is a pervert, we just be told that girl had to quit school because she was "sick"). Then when my period came when i 12 - 13 yr old, he put his filthy hands on me, and he treatened me "Don't u dare to tell anyone", but i tell, so i don't have to end up like this poor girl.

Georgia's governor Brian Kemp signed a "heartbeat bill", that bans abortion once a fetal heartbeat has been detected, which is possible as early as six weeks. Heartbeats can be detected before many women even know that they're pregnant. Unlike Alabama there are exceptions in the case of rape and incest if a police report has been filed. Other exceptions include if an abortion is essential to saving the mother's life or if the fetus is not viable due to a serious medical issue. The ACLU has plans to challenge this legislation.

Soooo were you stupid enough to not use birth control after knowing you come from a family of young mothers? At 16 you're still a baby. Shouldn't even be having sex in the first place. I understand women who were raped having abortions or women who may have their lives threatened by keeping the pregnancy, but stuff like this is just stupid. You were careless and having sex at a young age. You got knocked up and didn't wanna be a young mom so you killed your baby. Wow.

Kentucky legislators have been going back and forth to pass abortion laws. The ACLU filed a lawsuit against a heartbeat law in the state and blocked it and earlier this month another judge struck down a 2018 abortion law that would have ended a common second-trimester abortion procedure known as“dilation and evacuation.” In response Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin’s administration has begun the appeal process of this 2018 ruling and filed it with the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Similar to Kentucky's legislation, Mississippi seeks to ban abortions after a fetal heartbeat has been detected. The law was set to take effect on July 1, but the state's only abortion clinic and the Center for Reproductive Rights have asked a federal judge to block it. Current Mississippi restrictions require a 24-hour wait between an in-person consultation and the procedure.

I don’t have the mental and emotional strength to have any more kids and it also wouldn’t be fair because a lot of my time is already taken. I know for a fact I could not cope having any more kids. Why is it so acceptable for people to literally ignore someone's choices over their own body?? if someone changes their mind, it's *their* responsibility!! No-one else's!! If she had the tubal ligation and later regretted it - that's *her* responsibility.

North Dakota's governor has signed legislation that makes it a crime for a doctor to perform a second-trimester abortion with the use of instruments i.e clamps, scissors and forceps in order to remove the fetus from the womb. If caught medical professionals would be faced with a felony charge, up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The bill would come into effect and be enforceable if a federal appeals court or the US Supreme Court allows it.

Ohio's governor signed a heartbeat bill this year which banned abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected. The law does not provide any exceptions for rape or incest. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit to challenge the six-week pregnancy ban, which is set to go into effect July 10 unless the ACLU court order is able to delay the start date while the lawsuit goes forward.

Don't be ashamed. He raped you. Yes, you consented to the sex (maybe?), but you did not consent to unprotected sex and an unwanted pregnancy. Removing the condom secretly without the partner's permission is considered rape. No shame for you. And, obviously, no punishment for him.

Heartbeat legislation started as a model bill passed around by fringe anti-abortion groups, until it was taken up by North Dakota in 2013 and ultimately struck down by the lower courts - who deemed it unconstitutional. While it is likely that these laws will continue to get struck down by lower courts, the hope of anti-abortion groups is that some will make it to the Supreme Court. Even if the justices do not overturn Roe v Wade there is the possibility that they can uphold these measures to make the procedure more difficult to obtain in these states.

A child binds a woman to an abusive partner. Women are raped by abusive partners... Let's make a law that perpetuates this cycle and pat ourselves on the back for saving lives... Because that's the only thing that matters right!?

And some out there think the child is more important than the type of environment will be raised in. They care about a fetus, but quit caring when they're born.

A baby isn't the end of your life pregnant woman can still do amazing things and a baby doesn't automatically give a man control over your life. I understand your decision and while I don't necessarily agree with it , it needs to be said that a baby does not ever equal ownership of the mother and because it is ultimately your choice never let someone else's be the reason you make such a big decision

My best friend died at 21 from bone cancer. About a year before she died, during her chemotherapy she found out she was pregnant. She was having such massive doses of chemotherapy and radiation there would have been no quality to the child's life had it not been aborted. I was never ever able to get pregnant but I absolutely stand by other women's rights to this even though I desperately wanted a child of my own.

Another example of it shouldn't even be an argument. Have an abortion or have a child who will likely come out deformed, diseased, or maybe even dead.

I was adopted at birth and I would like to assume that my biological mother, whom I have NEVER met, wasn’t FORCED into carrying me. I am grateful for her willingness to give me up after birth in order to give me a better life with my parents, who could not conceive. However, if I found out she had been FORCED to carry me to term, I would feel inherently guilty about my existence. Adoption is NOT a viable option if you DO NOT WANT TO BE PREGNANT. My body, my choice. My biological mother’s body, HER choice.

2 abortions! I'm sorry if I'm misreading this and you were using birth control that happened to fail on both occasions but can I just say that I feel people like you are the reason so many are against abortion. You are making it harder for women that are raped, at risk, or even just teens too young and stupid to think it can happen to them to get safe procedures..

It's true the reason why I'm pro life in certain circumstances is because some people just use abortion as birth control instead of as a last resort and I can't possibly be behind someone who destroys a potential life simply because they didn't want to go get preventive measures. Planned parenthood is literally giving condoms and a variety of birth control away for free and the only step they need to take is to simply get some. All the other reasons I can absolutely understand and even get behind unless they wait clear until the baby can exist outside of the mother. The only other reason this is happening is because New York went too far by allowing it up until the child's birthday. If someone lives in a place as thoroughly saturated as NY and just doesn't bother until the baby is nearly full term regardless of the circumstances it's a baby once it can survive on its own

A tubal or ectopic pregnancy is life-threatening, not viable, and requires termination. That is not an abortion, that's a life-saving procedure. These yahoos passing laws do not understand that. The idiot senator in Ohio thinks an ectopic pregnancy can be removed and replanted into the uterus. FFS. That kind of medical procedure would change the world. It's not possible.

    Christine Holl
    Community Member
6 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

It's complicated. I know logically in my head that the treatment for an ectopic pregnancy isn't an abortion, but when I was lying in the hospital bed with the doctor explaining that they'd be injecting me with something to "dissolve the pregnancy" I was distraught because it felt like she was telling me I had to have an abortion. In hindsight, I was completely sleep deprived and emotional so possible wasn't able to make an informed decision anyway. Turned out my fallopian tube had ruptured and I was bleeding internally so required emergency surgery, thus taking the decision out of my hands entirely.

When the embryo attaches to the fallopian tube instead of the uterine wall. Never a viable pregnancy, without intervention i.e. an abortion, the woman's fallopian tube will basically explode and cause death to the both the fetus and the woman.

All Ectopic pregnancies which include tubal pregnancies require removal by surgery. That procedure is NOT and has NEVER been considered an abortion. Glad they caught it and you went on to have children. Stop saying it was an abortion. Incorrect information.

Your child wouldn't be a regret. And society is telling women that they can't have a child and finish a school, or be successful. Which is total lie. So many brave and strong women are out there who had a child during teen years (or rough time) and they succeeded. It is possible and we should focus more on helping teen moms, rather than to judge them

Don't be, ever, no matter what anyone says. My father was an abusive alcoholic. My childhood ..my home - I barely have happy memories. Could give more details but it's redundant . You did the right thing. I still have nightmares up to this day. Those who are blessed enough to not have been in this situation - keep you judgement to yourself . Plenty of a******s who are criminals and they are living life happy and free ; judge those who abuse innocents who are alive already , surely pedophiles and abusive a******s are worst than a women who's trying to make a sane choice for herself .

Antenor,, were you gonna pay for the hospital bills for when she’d give birth, were you gonna adopt that child and make sure they don’t slip through the cracks or gotten lost in the foster system, will you do that for the thousands of kids that are out there now waiting to be adopted? If not then keep your opinion to yourself.

Adoption is always an option... babies given up for adoption get adopted they don’t go into the foster care system and pregnant women qualify for Medicaid (unless they have a high income) which will cover all medical expenses. Stop making excuses.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the phrase 'compromising his SOBRIETY' suggests to me that he wanted to be sober & kick the habit & that dealing with both that & a newborn would have been too much for them both, plus she was on the pill which suggests they weren't intending to get pregnant at that time. I would also suggest that the fact she married him would lean towards being proof that he beat the alcoholism in order to have a healthy, stable relationship with her.

My upbringing was very "abstinence-only", and my school NEVER had sex-ed if any variety, but I still knew how pregnancy would be prevented. Especially now with the internet, how do people not know? Serious question, not trying to shame. I just don't understand where confusion can arise.

    Carrie de Luka
    Community Member

Just answering your question, not being critical of it. Maybe the parents caused the confusion? Some really don't like to think of their children knowing about sex even when the information is age appropriate. They think knowing sex exists makes sex inevitable instead of empowering young people and giving them the tools to make good choices. Parents might not allow the child any unsupervised access to the internet even when they are old enough to be given some leeway. Sadly, I can see how it might happen. Good sex education has proven to lower the rate of teenage pregnancies in the UK - it should be mandatory.

I shouldn't have to explain this, but not all of these are options. Birth control is really hard on some women and can have very bad side effects. The withdrawal method is only about 75% effective, so please don't use this method. Sterilization is a fun one... Try being under 40 and getting one... Many doctors won't because you "might change your mind" or they make a woman get permission from her husband, which is disgusting. IUDs hurt getting placed and used to and are not for everyone, and there can be serious side effects from them. Birth control apps... Not particularly effective... And a lot of these things cost money which the person may not have. You don't know a person's situation, or if they've ever been educated on these things. Get off your high horse.
