The RSPCA told Bored Panda that one of the positives to come out of the countless Covid-19 lockdowns is an increased interest in rehoming and adopting pets in shelters. "We have seen a huge increase," a representative of RSPCA told us. "Since lockdown started, on March 23, to December 31 the RSPCA’s Find a Pet section of the website had 39,835,657 views compared to 23,681,542 in the same period the previous year. This is a rise of 68%. Our fostering page had 470,933 visits in the same period compared to 136,705 during the same period in 2019 which is a staggering 244% increase."

Mine is a purebred, AND a rescue. He's been through at least 2 other owners until he met me. He's in his forever home now.
The RSPCA explained that the data shows there's been a surge in pet ownership during lockdown. "Google keyword searches for ‘Puppies near me’ increased 650% between Jan-Jul 2020. ‘Adopting a dog’ saw a 204% increase in searches, ‘kittens near me’ an 188% increase from the previous year," they shared. "Government figures show that the numbers of licenses issued for the commercial import of dogs rose 87% from 14,075 (May-September 2019) to 26,4461 (for the same period this year)."

My Recently Adopted Senior Cat, Grandpa Todd
The rise in pet ownership has also been confirmed by the UK's Pet Food Manufacturers' Association in their Covid-19 Pet Survey. According to the survey, 35 percent of young adults (that is to say people aged 24 to 35) confirmed they got a new pet or were planning to get one. That means that around 2.1 million (aka 19 percent) of young people have already got themselves a pet while in lockdown while a further 1.8 million Brits (16 percent) were planning to do so.
Meanwhile, the online marketplace Pets4Homes said that the demand for puppies rose by 104 percent compared to the prior year at the peak of lockdown (i.e. May 2020).

I am not actively looking for a dog but have vowed to adopt a lost dog I come across in a situation like this... At the very least I would rescue it and bring it to the local Dogs Trust.

The head of the RSPCA's animal rescue teams, Dermot Murphy, said that even though it's wonderful that so many people are adopting pets, there are still some issues with this. "Whilst it’s great that so many people have become pet owners and have found their pet to be a real source of comfort during these challenging times, we are concerned that some people may have bought a pet on impulse without considering how their lifestyle might change once the pandemic ends. On top of that, we are facing real economic uncertainties, and, as in previous recessions, people may simply find themselves unable to afford their pet," he warned.

Not necessarily. We got our (now 15 year old senior cat) when she was 5 weeks. I had to teach her to drink from a bowl. (Mom had become road pizza.) I just milked/watered down kitten puree, and had no problems. Of course, she had the older cats to emulate.

I can only acknowledge due to a similar situation. Taking care of a 10 year old rescue cat from Spain literally lifted me over the edge. He has been my best bud until he passed away of old age 10 years later
Meanwhile, across the pond, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) puts the number of cats and dogs entering the country’s shelters each year (pre-Covid) at around 6 to 8 million. While the numbers have gone down dramatically from a whopping 13 million in 1973, they’re still incredibly large and point to how deeply throwaway culture is engrained in society.

If he's from a puppy mill, the nose sores are probably from poking his snout through the cage. The back paw might have been damaged by the small confinement space.

Awwww....my dog Chopper (black and tan German Shepherd mix) passed away November 2019 at almost 16 yrs old. We called him Chop Chop and Pork Chop (and Chuleta, which is Pork Chop in Spanish) sometimes, too! He was the absolute best dog and also started as a foster that failed in a couple of homes before his humans (us) caught on that his foster home was meant to be his forever home. Keep the tradition going!

I am a foster fail candidate as I would find it too hard to raise any animal then have to send them off to another home no matter HOW wonderful they might be. I admire all animal foster carers so much too. Chopper Pork Chop golden boy.
According to HSUS, there are around 3.5k brick-and-mortar animal shelters in the US and around 10k animal sanctuaries and rescue groups in the entirety of North America.
So while we can be upset that so many wonderful pets are left without a home, we can also be thankful that volunteers take them in from the cold and help them find a better, more stable home. The 4 million cats and dogs adopted from shelters annually are a testament to that. However, the situation isn’t as great for everyone else.

The Arwyn spelling is strictly masculine in Wales. Originally a Welsh name, which came into use at the end of the 19th century - derived from the Welsh intensifying prefix ar- + gwyn "white." Its adoption may have been influenced by the old Welsh name Arianwen.

HSUS also points out that even though lots of pet owners adore their furry and fluffy companions, far from everyone has proper access to vet care, as well as spay/neuter services. The sad reality is that most pets don’t enjoy the quality of life that they could be.

Handsome Rescue
There are approximately 23 million pets living in such underserved communities which translates to a jaw-dropping 77 percent of all US pets who have never ever seen a vet and 87 percent who have not been spayed/neutered. The numbers really are shocking and it suddenly makes sense why so many pets are abandoned.

It is actually a very common feature on rabbits. I have two, one has the face stripe, and if you go to a pet store a lot of them have it. It could just be a common breed.

Rescued In Puerto Rico, Adopted In New York, Passed Out On The Way Home.
Animal shelters and organizations do what they can to help pets get rescued. However, having a big heart and a strong desire to help aren’t always enough. Sadly, housing, feeding, and treating animals is expensive. HSUS states that humane organizations spend around 2.5 billion dollars each (that’s around 8 dollars per capita) while animal control organizations spend 800 million to 1 billion dollars (aka 4 dollars per capita).

Personally i have had such bad experiences with blue heelers! Bitten and my dad had one that killed livestock and any small animal. My friend also had one they had to put down due to his aggression! This one looks like a sweetheart though

We have the old-fashioned steam heat coil radiators. Guess where the cats line to sleep in winter. We drape thick folded fleece blankets on them to make them softer and more comfy.

Oh Honey, just love him, feed him, keep him warm in winter and cool in summer, take him for some off-leash runs, and make sure he has a place on your couch when you get home, because Greyhounds become total lovable couch potatoes in retirement.

Crates are not cruel. In fact, they should be considered your dog’s best friend. By confining the dog to a crate when you are unable to keep a close eye on him, you prevent him from making house training mistakes or engaging in destructive behavior. You set him up for success and not failure. Let’s face it, it would be nice if we all had two weeks to take off and devote solely to helping our new dog adjust to its new home, however, most of us must work or be away from home at some time. You can’t always be there. The crate can.

So great to see black cats! My own beautiful boy was rescued from a drain then diagnosed with FIV... the vet assumed I wouldn't want a sick, black stray but he had my heart from the first purr 🐾♥️

My doggo got picked up by my dad, who bought him a whole pack of hot dogs on the way home to calm him down. He wouldn't leave my dads side until he realized that I would actually let him sleep on my bed. Now the only person he lays on top of is me. (H'es a German Shepherd, 90 pounds. He's a big boy, definitely too big to be a lap dog but I'm not gonna move his pure face)

All of my pets are rescues, technically, & with the exception of missing not knowing what they looked like as babies i regret nothing! 1 cat was part of an abandoned barn litter. I have 1, my sister has his bro & the rest (including mom) were adopted also. My 2nd cat was a Craigslist rescue. Abandoned by the woman's neighbor. We got her & someone took her bro. She was preggers when we took her but made sure her 3 babies got good homes. Our dog was found in the desert. Its been almost 2yrs & hes perfect! A bit anxious & clingy but doing great! We love him to pieces! My only thing is that, since we can never really know who (if anyone but unlikely) owned them before us, i wish i could let them know they had a great home. Like, we tried hard to see if anyone was looking for our pup but found nothing. If someone was i wish i could tell then hes spoiled & very much ok. Ive lost pets & that was my biggest worry!

If they come across this article, then you just did tell them. Not knowing the circumstances that led the animals to you, I only hope their previous families appreciate you taking these fur babies in and giving them so much love and a fun full life.

When I was ready to add a new pup to my family, I went looking for the dog who needed me the most and wound up with a heartworm-positive senior that the shelter had named Noah. Best dog I ever had and it feels great to be able to give him a great life for whatever time he has left.

I am so happy to see these animals got a home like my cat did he was on the streets for 4 years then my step dd adopted him and the cat even got to graduated from collage then my step dad got married to my mom and then he was with us for 4 more years until he died on march 5 this little guy was Iñigo
