It's estimated that 625,000 adoptable dogs and cats were euthanized in the United States in 2019. There are simply too many animals coming into shelters and too few people considering adoption when looking for a pet.
But this gruesome number could be reduced dramatically. All it would take is two things: more responsible pet owners so that fewer critters end up in shelters in the first place and more people adopting pets instead of buying them.
When you adopt, you not only get a friend for life but you also open up shelter space for another animal who might desperately need it. Continuing our tradition, we at Bored Panda scrolled through the subreddit r/BeforeNAfterAdoption and hand-picked the most wholesome photos that were uploaded this month, showing adorable animals enjoying their second chance at life.
If you're done with the selection but your heart craves more, check out our earlier rescue pet compilations: December, November, October.

The Shelter Made A Rule That These Siblings Had To Be Adopted Together Because They Were Inseparable. They Sleep Like This Every Night
AAAAHHHH MY EYESSSSS. I FEEL LIKE I AM LOOKING INTO THE ARK AT THE END OF INDIANA JONES
Owning a companion animal such as a dog or a cat has benefits for good mental health, and has really helped people during the pandemic. After all, interactions with animals may help with depression and anxiety, particularly under stress-prone conditions (human-animal interactions may even improve peer-to-peer social relationships as well as enhance feelings of respect, trust, and empathy between people).
However, some researchers have been worrying that a dramatic increase in dog abandonment could potentially occur due to COVID-19 related health, economic, and social stresses as well as due to inconclusive reports of companion animals being potential COVID-19 carriers.
Adopted A Cat But Left Her Brother So I Had To Go Back A Few Days Later And Get Him Too
We had a fluffy black cat when I was a teen. My dad would say, "Ollie! Close your eyes and disappear!" And he'd do a long-suffering blink and POOF - just a fuzzy black void.
Load More Replies...Best decision you've ever made! 2002 we rescued two fluffy black brothers. Lost them within a few months of each other at 16years old.
I'm so sorry for your loss. You were so lucky to have had them for 16 years, though it sure goes by fast.
Load More Replies...I actually wouldn't mind. They both look so silly but serious at the same time! I love the one chilling in the sink too XD
But one study found that the stricter the social isolation became during the COVID-19 pandemic, the greater the interest in dog adoption. It concluded that the adoption rate increased significantly, while dog abandonment did not change. Moreover, there was a clear association between individual's quality of life and their perception of their dog’s quality of life and behavior—as humans and dogs are both social animals, these findings suggest that human-dog relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic have only gotten stronger.
This My New Pupper Sanoi! She’s About 14 Weeks Old And Can’t Figure Out What To Do With Her Ears
Public Relations Manager at Best Friends Animal Society, Temma Martin, said there is now a silver lining when it comes to pets in shelters. "People have stepped up like never before to adopt and foster, both for Best Friends and for shelters across the country," Martin told Bored Panda.
"Shelters and rescue groups adapted quickly to continue saving lives through virtual adoptions, and many shelters report even greater success with virtual adoptions than traditional ones because pets show far better in foster homes than they do in kennels or cages. This offers adopters a chance to meet a dog or cat virtually, in a home or on a couch rather than in a shelter environment, and to see their true personality shine in a foster home."
Just Thought I’d Share My Blind Rescue Being Her Adorable Self
Ill bet she doesn’t know that she’s blind! My blind kitty doesn’t have a clue. Does zoomies around the house and everything! I did put baby bumpers on sharp corners but that was probably more for my peace of mind than hers!
She still sees but in a different way. Whiskers work kind of like sonar, but instead of using sound they take in information from the air currents. (Did you know that cats can even have whiskers on the back of their front legs: just above the foot? I didn’t until a couple years ago when I saw a veterinarian talking about them on television. I checked my cat’s feet and there they were!)
Load More Replies...Sweetheart! I have one too! My husky rushed in the bush and came out with a sickly kitten in her mouth and put it at my feet. The vet couldn't save his eye, but right now he is 14 and thriving!
Hooray for the rescue! One of my cats was born without eyes, too. He was a rescue from the streets of Athens. Best decision ever. :)
awww all the cats there are so sweet there!! i tooooooooooatly would have broght one home :3
Load More Replies...According to Martin, foster parents also have more first-hand knowledge of the animals and are able to participate directly in the virtual adoption process, sharing with potential adopters how the pets get along with other animals and family members, and their individual likes and dislikes, quirks, skills, and behaviors.
"For example, looking just at numbers from Best Friends' Lifesaving Center in Salt Lake City as an example, in 2020, through late December, nearly 5,000 animals were placed in foster homes, and 3,050 were adopted, compared to 2,740 foster placements and 2,514 adoptions in 2019."
The good news is that these figures represent a broader situation as well. Martin highlighted that nationally, a remarkable number of COVID-19 cats and pandemic pups have been adopted from shelters and rescue groups since the virus took over our world. "According to shelter pet data sources, Shelter Animals Count and PetPoint, which receive shelter intake and outcome data from thousands of shelters across the country, at least a million pets have been adopted over the last eight months, and tens of thousands more are currently in foster homes."
Was Hesitant When The Shelter Said We Had To Get Two, Think I Understand Why Now
You could NEVER part these 2, or else it would literally break my heart. Although, them hugging is also MELTING my heart!
I am so glad you did! Very few cats do well alone, especially the siblings and bonded pairs!
Years ago, I adopted 2 kittens from a shelter, not littermates, though. They were the best of buddies until they died. Then I took in a pregnant cat, kept her and two of her kittens. Mama died, but I still have "the kittens" who are now 13. They HATE each other. Weird, huh?
"It's not surprising that so many people are looking to acquire a pet amid the [pandemic]," Martin added. "During this difficult time, our pets serve as companions, provide emotional support, help us cope with social isolation and—in the case of dogs—get us outside for exercise and fresh air."
This is also a fantastic time to adopt because pets are just good for us. "Numerous studies have determined that the presence of pets is beneficial for our physical and mental health. The companionship of animals has been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and lessen depression and anxiety, helping people to feel calmer and more secure when the news from the outside world is distressing."
Rescued Tiny Dog. No More Worries Little Guy. You Will Forever Be Warm Now
I have a rescue that we got when she was about a year old. She was terrified when we got her. We've had her 5 years now. Still looks terrified. Shakes at thunderstorms and loud noises. If you make too quick of a movement near her, she yelps. And she is the most pampered little princess. I figure just about the time she's ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge, she might calm down. But, I think (I hope) she knows she's loved.
Some things from a traumatic past can't be erased no matter how much love they now have. She will know that she is loved and no doubt she shows you love in return, in her own little way.
Load More Replies...I think you just adopted my dog's sibling. We've had her about 8 years now. She has made herself at home. B573E802-D...3-jpeg.jpg
If you too have both the desire and the possibility to get a companion animal, Best Friends Animal Society encourages you to choose the adoption option by taking in a homeless pet from a local animal shelter or rescue group, rather than buying from a breeder, pet store or online retailer.
While there are many benefits of adopting, one of the most important is knowing that you’re saving a life. Purebreds, mutts, and cats—animals of all tails and paws lose their homes due to issues that are no fault of their own, like financial crisis, divorce, or a death in the family.
"These pets are waiting in shelters and rescue groups for someone to fall in love with them and take them home," Martin said. "Adopted pets seem to know that they have been given a second chance, and they are most likely to repay their families with a lifetime of unconditional love. Adopters often express that their shelter and rescue pets show a dedication, love, and loyalty to their people that pets acquired from other sources simply can't rival."
My Boyfriend Said Belle's Different Colored Eyes Creeped Him Out When We Adopted Her, But I Think They Are Beautiful
She is beautiful. I don't see how you can find that little fur ball creepy. Belle is a Khao Manee they are very rare and people pay somewhere between $7,000–$11,000.
Tell your BF the cat confided in you that he creeps HER out. So they're even.
My Grandparents Adopted A Kitten And They Sent Me This Pic In The Mail
Old school; no computer or phone. I remember doing it; it was all we had in the 70's!
Load More Replies...I know I'm the "Debbie Downer" but please when you are a "up there in age senior", have a back up plan for kitten after you pass. I volunteer in a no-kill shelter and have seen far to often cats come, in that were adopted by seniors who have died or gone into a home, and their 10+ year old cat needs to be rehomed. Unfortunately if they pass 5 years they are almost always unadoptable and they become "lifers". Just an honest reality.
Yeah, I didn't want to be that person. Thank you for having the courage to say that. I got into an argument with a friend whose father was denied a puppy at the local shelter. I thought the shelter was correct. The man was 75. They offered several really sweet older dogs. But he was having none of it. Bought a puppy, and he died a year later. Luckily a family friend took the dog, but it was a near miss for it being put into a shelter.

Today We Adopted Toby, He Has Been In The Shelter For Nearly 6 Years. We Plan On Being His Furever Home!
Between the ear and expression, he was not left in the shelter, he was serving a sentence.
I agree. I volunteer in a no-kill and after about age 5 people stop looking at them unless they are newly admitted. Then people hear the heartbreaking story. I have so many above age 15 that have been at the shelter most of their life.

The Look Of This Cute Pittie After Being Rescued
There is a story behind this. The guy is a fireman who recused the dog from a collapsed drain or something. During the operation to get the doggo out the guy and the dog connected but he had to take the dog to the shelter. Cut to a few days later and he came back to give that doggo a forever home. There is a video somewhere of the whole story.
I've read you don't look a dog in the eyes. Obviously incorrect. They're looking at each other with their hearts.
You don't look a dog you don't know in the eyes. It can be seen as a threat. If it's a dog that loves you it will willingly look you in the eyes with compassion

I recently got a kitten from a shelter (sorry for poor photo quality) IMG_202101...16af24.jpg
I adopted my Bonneville twice. After a relationship breakdown I had to give her to a friend a long way away to look after. Friend's GF was a (expletive deleted) and was horrible to my kitty who ran away. Thankfully they'd never updated her chip details so I got a call to say she'd been found. 1 year after I had to give her up I got her back again. My BF "doesn't like cats" but he's the one worrying when she's 5 minutes late coming back in, he's the one sitting in the house freezing so she can have the window open to come in and out, and he's the one buying Felix Soup For Cats. He even lets her join in his zoom meetings although I'm not sure that's voluntary on his part.
I would strongly urge you to make Bonneville an "indoor" cat. She will adapt and both you and your BF can relax. No worries about outdoors when they remain indoors.

I absolutely love these kind of posts. 8 years ago my (now) ex saw a puppy get tossed from a car window on an interstate. The puppy was about 3 months old (large breed) and was wearing a collar that was too small to even fit my chihuahua and was cutting into her neck. This dog (we named her Justice. she is an American Pitbull Terrier/Bull Mastiff/Boxer mix) is now my daughter's best friend. She is large drooling and droopy mess, yet somehow never slimes my daughter (she has severe autism and a strong dislike of her hands or clothing being wet).
Couldn't do it. I got to about 12 before I started tearing up. I'm gonna go hug my dog.
