30 Actors Who’ve Made A Career Off Of Playing The Same Person Over And Over, As Pointed Out By Folks In This Online Group
Do you ever get that feeling of getting new and fresh opportunities in life, only to find out that they are just more of the same?
Well, turns out, this happens more often than you might think. And it’s especially visible in the film industry. But we’re not talking about films, though they are guilty of this, but about particular actors and the roles they are cast in.
People online have been listing famous names in the movie industry and the same-y roles they keep getting cast in, where effectively only names change, but you’re always either that macho dude, or an ex-cop, or the comic relief or whatever.
Check out the most spot-on observations from Redditors across multiple AskReddit posts (here, here, and here) on the topic in the curated list below, and why not upvote and share some big names who keep getting picked for the same old roles movie after movie.

Dwayne Johnson plays "The Rock" in every one of his movies.

The Rock is always a tough badass good guy.
I would like to see him in negative role, with Ryan Reynold in positive in a proper action movie 😂 [Edit: Guys I have seen Red Notice, I want a 'serious' Ryan Reynold fight]
Funny you should ask, and not to spoil anything? But go watch Red Notice, the movie they just put out together ;)
Load More Replies...That was acrually CGI. Hard to miss because it looked so real.
Load More Replies...Be Cool. He may be an annoying d**k. But that movie was definitely not about him being a tough badass. In fact, I think it was making fun of his behavior as being one.

I love him, but in the last ten to fifteen years Morgan Freeman is basically just Morgan Freeman in everything.

Morgan Freeman is always the older advisor to the protagonist, from being God, to Red, to Vitruvius.
There's a film, The Intern, where the protagonist is a senior intern. So.... yeah, depends on the storyline.
Load More Replies...I feel like it’s because he looks like a mentor or guide to the protagonist. Possibly due to his age it brings a sense of knowledge
He did switch it up in the movie 'Wanted' with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie. You think he's that good, fatherly mentor through the whole movie then find out at the end that he's not. I love that movie!
I think I'll skip it now, considering I can't unknow that fact. Thanks, I guess?
Load More Replies...(Morgan's narration) Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of s**t smelling foulness I can't even imagine, or maybe I just don't want to. Five hundred yards... that's the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile.
I absolutely loved him as "God" in Bruce Almighty! He's exactly how I imagine God would be.
so he got old and has to play older men's roles and you're mad? That's like being mad 50+ year old actresses don't get to play the ingenue anymore.
Adam Freaking Sandler....
Make some weird voices, scream a coupe times. All with a m***nic, lost facial expression. Rinse, Repeat
He does his silly stuff and then he does: Punch Drunk Love, Reign Over Me, Uncut Gems, and Spanglish. - As a viewer you are really doing yourself a disservice by only watching the money makers that go into big theaters. A lot of actors have their bread and butter work that pays the bills, and then they have side projects to do indie projects that will let them have range.
That dude is really smart, he made a calculated cost to earn ratio of the m noovies he produced, did it several times i succession. Yeah, most of them were directly bad, yet i cannot but ponder how did he managed to get something so unpredictable right that many times.
He actually can act but chooses not to. Punch Drunk Love is outstanding
Bruce Willis is pretty much always some retired cop/military guy who is forced to return to a life of justice/military s**t after some bad s**t happens.
Love this film - watched it the other day 😃 Also loved Bruce in Moonlighting, not a film but a great character
Load More Replies...Unbreakable, Sixth Sense?.. you haven't watched enough of his movies.
but how many unbreakables? how many six senses?? poster is right. he will always be the retired someone that comes back when sht goes wrong. lol
Load More Replies...Come on! Not true! He has even played in Christmas movie😅😅😅 ( for whoever gets it)
And here is the great debate....is die hard a Christmas movie ? 😁😉
Load More Replies...Bruce is a guy who just doesn't give a sh*t anymore. He was great in 12 monkeys, but somewhere along the line got bored. Maybe if someone would give him a good role he actually wanted to do and wasn't a low budget action flick.

I especially loved the movie in which he played the cocky young guy.
He doesn't have an acting range as an actor! He is mediocre at least and wouldn't have this career if it wasn't for his looks
"His looks..." I know this is accurate, but it's also baffling. I don't find most men attractive, so I get that there may just be something that I'm not seeing. However, I feel like he just isn't that good looking (I can acknowledge someone is pretty though I feel no personal attraction) and I've never met anyone in person with a different opinion except straight men who enjoy action movies*. *Lestat is the exception. The one and only character Tom Cruise has played that I have personally observed genuine thirst for, and I doubt it has much to do with Tom. Please note that I say this as a human who is old enough to have watched his movies in the 80s.
Load More Replies...And then there was Tropic Thunder. I didn't know it was him until the credits.
Look, you can love him or hate him for his Scientology activities all you want, but this argument is bullsh!t. If you think his characters in Interview With The Vampire, Tropic Thunder, and Rock Of Ages were the same, then there's something wrong with you.
Fun fact: to draw the veins of the actors the makeup, they had to hang upside down

Ryan Reynolds. Sure he's a good looking guy with a smoking wife, but I mean come on people. I don't think I've ever seen him actually embrace a character - I just feel like "hey, that's how ryan acts in the real world"

Ryan Reynolds has made a career of being the wise cracking quick witted quipper. He’s literally Deadpool in every movie now, just sans the Uber violence, mutant abilities and 4th wall breaking.
That’s not a complaint, just the niche he has been able to very successfully embrace.
or the Voices, that's a weird movie, Reynolds portraits serious mental illness in main character.
Load More Replies...Obviously haven't seen 'Buried' 2010. He's a very versatile actor but at the moment he's doing what people want to see and what pays the money.
Watch "Burried" and then get back and let us know if you still feel the same.
Check him out in: Chaos Theory, The Amityville Horror, The Nines, The Voices, Mississippi Grind, and the Woman in Gold.
Ryan Reynolds was a child actor in one of the worst child tv soap opera shows ever. He's come a long way since then. He had to. The guy has a bigger sense of humor than anything else. And he's not into standup so he's not broken.

Another idiotic one. If you think his characters in Django Unchained, Kingsman: The Secret Service, and the Marvel movies are the same, you should probably go back to watching the Teletubbies, where the characters are colour coded.

True! I think his best movies were during 90's and early 00's! After that he had a lot of financial problems and was accepting any script no matter how horrible it was! I mean in some movies i really prefered to have THE BEES take me out of my misery

Kevin Hart. Always the little guy that acts like he’s tough and is then shown being scared of everything.
He was different in the American adaptation of the French movie untouchables! (Untouchables is a lot better though)
I agree! But the original, The Intouchables, is the best for sure. Hands down.

Will Ferrell is a bit of a one-trick pony. Sure his character has major differences based on the story-line, but at the end of the day, his version of an anchorman, pro-ice skater, basketball player, wedding/funeral crasher, nascar racer, etc.. is pretty much the same character every time..
Oh boy! If you want to torture me put me down to see a movie with him and Adam Sandler! Painful
Only movie I liked him in. It was a pretty good movie, some good acting from him.

John Wayne pretty much played John Wayne in every movie he was in even though the names of his character was different.
He was also a draft dodger who capitalized on the fact that most Hollywood leading men voluntarily went to war. Like Jimmy Stewart who gained weight after initially being rejected for being too slight—legend. https://www.wearethemighty.com/mighty-trending/hollywood-legend-jimmy-stewart-was-a-world-war-ii-hero/
Though a bit problematic, I suggest "The Searchers". Wayne plays Confederate veteran Ethan Edwards hunting for his kidnapped niece. Edwards is racist, violent, at times maniacal. But he is also tough, rock steady and incredibly brave. It shows that great moral character isn't necessary for courageous, even outright heroic action. And in the end? His very nature sets him sadly (or not) apart. Wayne and Ford's best. It's a glimpse into the psyche of the men who created the United States, and maybe just a little of the American character, warts and all.
John Wayne wearing different clothes. That was the only difference. My favorite JW movie is "The Quiet Man." At least the clothes were more interesting.
This is the only one on this list that is actually accurate. All the others have played different roles. Pity most people dont check out their careers and see that.
Obligatory Michael Cera, always the quiet awkward guy.
Except in the 5 minutes in the movie "This the end" where he's a coke snorting, women screwing asshole
Oh my God, you're right! I hated that character. He was supposed to be playing himself as well.
Load More Replies...Except in "This is the End". He is really not quiet shy guy in that movie.
Seth rogan... bumbling stoner buffoon.
that's really who he is in real life but he's super nice. He's one of those people who sees the humor in everything and laughs a lot. I love that his parents drive him every time he interviews on Ellen. He's actually doing meatier roles and trying to be taken more seriously lately.
Seth Rogan is cool when you watch 2-3 of his movies. After a while it's just recycled humor
as Benzoate Ostylezene Bicarbonate (B.O.B.) in Monsters vs Aliens, the laugh was infectious
Zooey Deschanel always plays the quirky quasi nerd hipster.
She was really bad in "The happening", but then again, that movie was so bad itself that everyone in it was bad. "500 days of Summer" is better, that was like Zooey playing woman who is not Manic Pixy Dream Girl but the main character thinks she is.
I listened to a podcast interview to see how similar her real personality is to the characters she plays. My conclusion - pretty similar, but she may have been acting during the interview, too.
I've seen Zoe in 2 things: New Girl and The Happening. I didn't care at all for her character in The Happening. She plays quirky much better
Mark Wahlberg is always pissed and chasing someone. Swears a lot.
Maybe they placed rock on top rock, repeated a few times and built a 'Wall'berg.. I'll see myself out..
Load More Replies...One of the most overrated (as in: getting main roles) actors I can think of, I really don´t know why. His brother Donnie is by far the better actor.
Remember when Mark Wahlberg nearly beat a Vietnamese man to death in a hate crime? I do!
I liked him in I Heart Huckabees. I saw that before I learned about the attempted murder he committed.

Amazed this guy survived cancel culture due to all of his hate crimes.
Mark ends up in a lot of the same type roles but I love most of them. Deepwater Horizon is my absolute favorite, but I greatly enjoyed Patriots Day too
Vince Vaughn has played a wacky underachiever from Chicago so many times it makes me sick.
I like when he plays a funny character. His serial killer roles are played a little too well

Seriously! One twitchy, angsty, but thinks she's cooler than everyone else and oh so edgy chick coming up.
I like her 🤷♀️ don't know why she gets a ton of hate ..I really think people are just following a trend for hating on her now.
Tbh I think that there was a change after she publicly came out. I was always SO annoyed with her in the Twilight heyday. She was so flat and boring and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why anyone liked her even a little. Then, when she came out and it was all in the news some article posted a current picture of her and it made me emotional because I realized that I'd never seen a single image of her smiling before in which she actually looked happy. If she smiled at all it was always an uncomfortable expression that didn't reach her eyes. She had dead eyes in movies and off set every time I saw her until that picture. It seems like her acting has changed. She might have more range than she used to. Maybe it's maturity, maybe it's a sense of emotional freedom. I'm reserving judgement for at least a couple more movies.
You don't like any of her acting but suddenly like her after she publicly announced she was gay? That has nothing to do with her movies just so you know.
Load More Replies...You know the poor woman made the vampire movie that should not be named. Even Harrison ford had trouble to get away from some roles, i still dont like her, but most of the time is more about the casting people, than what they want to do, remember jonh Travolta
Sarah Jessica Parker is Carrie Bradshaw in every movie. Even in the movies she made before Sex and the City. Even the witch she plays in Hocus Pocus is Carrie Bradshaw.
I'm not a fan of SATC, but I can't help but finding her charming in interviews. Joking about her looks is both old and mean. I really admire her for not changing her looks despite being bullied. Staying true to yourself is my definition of beautiful. I find society's idea of perfect to be boring. Plus I like her personal style.
I don't remember the witch being so stylish! But it would be interesting to see if she will be stylish in the sequel
I take your comment about Hocus Pocus, and flip it on it's head...every movie she is a ditzy witch, bought back to life by a virgin lighting the black flame candle. Carrie Bradshaw is just that witch

She's funny, seems pretty down-to-earth, and doesn't take herself too seriously. I'll take Jen over Gwyneth any day.
Did you forget about her roles in Cake, Management, and The Good Girl? Many actors take parts that will pay the bills so they can also take roles in indie movies and have roles with range.
Sigh, bc she’s a “girl”. Women always have to put up with that crap (“she was fantastic, deserves an award, but that DRESS”). Huge eye roll
Load More Replies...Yeah, she's way overrated. I've never liked her movies. They're pretty generic and she doesn't come across as a good actor. I really hope she stops the overtanning that she has indulged in the last few years because it makes her look like she's one step away from Donald Trump orange.
When she's trying to be "serious" or "intense" she clenches her teeth and talks through them. Made a whole career out of 1 good haircut. Awful as an actress.

Benedict Cumberbatch is forever the genius character.
Maybe, but he's a fantastic actor. Just because a character is a genius doesn't mean they're the same character...
Look up the recording for Smaug with body sensors. He's amazing.
Load More Replies...I love that you can google anything remotely close to his name and he comes up. I just tried "bedictot cumbebund" and he's the only thing that came up.
You folks need to listen to Cabin Pressure. Wherein Cumberbatch plays a short, anxious pilot with zero self confidence. You're in for a treat.
Smaug was a genius dragon. I just started watching Sherlock (I know, I´m late to the show), and I LOVE it! But sometimes I just see Dr. Strange...
I do not agree with this one. Benedict in my opinion truly is a remarkable actor. From his Sherlock Holmes - Doctor Strange - The imitation game - The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (weird but completely different in character) even this new one out ( not my cup of tea but brilliant acting) The power of the dog. An extraordinary actor to me is when I watch something I completely forget who that actor played before while watching the current film. If I can get lost in their character in different films then to me they are brilliant actresses - actors.
That's fine by me. He's a brilliant actor. We all know it's cumberbatch but we still enjoy the quirks

Judy Greer always plays the best friend/sidekick.
I have a feeling they don't offer her something else! She is very underrated
That's truly not her doing. She wants to work, and those are the only roles she's offered. She's really quite talented.
Utterly hilarious. Should have been a leading comedic actor 20 years ago.
What about Jaw Breaker, Arrested Development, and the Descendants (Clooney movie)?
I agree with Vicky Z I really like her and feel she really hasn't gotten her chance
Aubrey Plaza. I love her but she can only do the sarcastic eye rolling act for so many movies.

Can you BE more wrong?Matthew has so many issues that it's shocking he can still act! I hope he gets over his problems, he is my favourite from friends! He is a very talented comedian in my opinion even though Chandler was indeed Matthew for sure

As Good As it Gets is fantastic!! But DAMN it didn’t age well!! My son and I had seen this a dozen times years ago and re-watched it recently and it would NOT have been made today.
Stephen Tobolowsky

Load More Replies...I will say that, because of American Pie, I've enjoyed many years of being called "Stiffler's Mom".
Jon Bernthal. Always the tough guy. Although he does do it well. Liked him a lot in Fury.
John Bernthal is amazing precisely because he plays tough guys BUT he brings a unique sensibility and vulnerability to them.
Love Jon Bernthal. Now... Can someone tell me how in hell Jeff Goldblum isn't KING of this list?!
I love Jon. My vote goes to Ben Stiller who always plays the bumbling idiot or over the top guy who thinks he is amazing! Him and Vince V always have some stupid speech in their movies also. I enjoy VV a bit more.
There's a handful of guys that basically just play mobsters. Tony Sirico and Vincent Pastors (Paulie and Big P**sy from the Sopranos) are good examples.
Jennifer Lawrence plays a twenty something year old actress who has the same acting skills and range of someone overacting their way through a community college play.

I'm not really a movie buff so correct me if I'm wrong. I haven't seen Denzel Washington mentioned yet. He seems to always play the badass guy who kicks ass every time. Sure, he has been a crooked cop, a gangster, etc. but he's still always the same badass guy. I mean, can you imagine him playing some awkward nerd? I don't think he can pull off any other type of role
sounds mean, but in this case it shows that most people aren't acquainted with older good movies...like anything pre 2005

Denzel is a legend! In 'The Bone Collector' he made Angelina Jolie look like she could act and he wasn't kicking any ass in that film. In 'Fallen', 'The Preachers Wife', 'The Pelican Brief', 'Crimson Tide', 'Remember The Titans', (I could go on for about 40 films), Denzel has shown a versatility that would make a chameleon cry. Sorry but OP seems to have only seen 2 Denzel films.
Gary Oldman. He always play a character that isn't recognizable since he always looks and act so differently.
Isn't that... the exact opposite of what this post is about? Or is there sarcasm here that I just didn't get?
“He plays someone completely different every time! So tired of his schtick!” Lol, okay pal
Are you f*****g Sirius???? (sorry for the Potter-joke. I had to do it!)
Gary Oldman is a consummate actor. He most certainly does NOT belong on this list.
How is not Sylvester stallone on the list? And almost all these tough fighters? Arnold, Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, Jackie Chan
Well, Jackie Chan has a whole slew of movies that even though involve fighting, are more about him singing. He's more of a stuntman with a character type.
Load More Replies...Can't believe nobody said Jason Statham. He's either a British tough guy or a British tough guy doing a bad American accent.
because we all know he is always Jason freaking Statham and that's ok. That man is DRIPPING testosterone and I will watch anything he's in.
Load More Replies...I guess according to this list it would be harder to identify an actor who doesn't play themselves in each movie.
Johnny Depp. His character is always strange, but it's a different character each time. If I didn't know he was each movie, I wouldn't recognize him.
Load More Replies...So, hang on. You mean to say people don't know that roles are written for actors, playing to their quirks and attributes that made them recognise able and famous in the first place? But, if they cast "wrong" and an actor isn't right for the role, the whole film takes a Swan dive! Stop shitting on the actors, they're doing what they're good at, and what they're known for. I don't go to a film with Jim Carrey headlining for a serious gangster film!
I gave up after the first few, because though some have merit, most of them are so idiotic they are an insult to the reader as well as the actor. This kind of juvenile, acidic criticism is nothing but malignant spite.
Seems most people posting have little knowledge of roles these actors/actresses played that are older than 10 years.
As much as I like her, Meg Ryan. Also, with the exception of Erin Brockovich and Sleeping with the Enemy, Julia Roberts is the same in every other movie.
Many actors take roles to pay the bills and then find indie projects that let them show range. Brendan Fraser did "George of the Jungle" so he could go and do "Gods and Monsters". Jennifer Aniston does rom coms and then does "Cake" or "The Good Girl". Granted, a lot of actors play the same role over and over again but that is sometimes all they are offered. But check out their IMDB lists and choose some of their other films you may not have heard of.
And Matthew McConaughy always plays the pretentious cynical bastard, while Eva Green and Helena Bonham Carter are the slightly creepy quirky Johnny-Depp-in-a-Burton-movie like women.
Ice Cube. He plays the same guy in everything hes in looks, sounds, dresses, and acts the same in every movie.
