33 Before and After Italian Earthquake: Heartbreaking Photos Show Destroyed Towns In Italy
At least 247 people are so far reported to have been killed in the devastating earthquake that hit Italy on Wednesday. The epicenter of the recent earthquake of 6.2 magnitudes was in Norcia, Umbria, approximately 100km north-east of Rome, and towns including Amatrice, Accumoli, and Pescara del Tronto have been severely damaged by the natural disaster. It's only when you look at these before and after pictures however that you can really begin to understand the true level of destruction.
"My town isn't here anymore," said the mayor of Accumoli, Stefano Petrucci, as he surveyed what remains of his hometown. Most of Amatrice's historic old town has been reduced to rubble, and the biggest earthquake of a decade caused houses to collapse down the hillside in Pescara del Tronto. Tremors rocked buildings as far away as Rome and survivors have described 'apocalyptic' scenes near Perugia, the capital of the Umbrian region popular with holidaymakers. Scroll below to see the Italy earthquake damage for yourself.

Corso Umberto I, Looking Back Towards The Belltower
Interesting to see red brick building and maybe centuries old church tower survive while new buildings around collapsed to nothing.
Those aint' new buildings. Actually, the red bricks one is the most recent.

looking at the sky in both pictures is pretty weird....grey before the earthquake and blue after
What is weird? Any correlation between earthquake and color of the sky? Anyway, the "before" one has been taken even months before.

At least you can see the view now (still terrible though in terms of the damage)

Please, don't tell me that person standing there is looking at the spot someone dear fell down when the protective bar has broken..... ó_ò
if you look just pass near the light pole on the road I can see there is a crack on the road also it looks like that the earth crust has moved before and that where it all got up lifted and most of the damages was there and beyond also the other side but the initial part was where I said but most of the damages was on the other side of the road.

The shining flowers on the balcony form a very odd contrast...beauty and devastation so close together...
Not really the right time to be all artsy and all
Load More Replies...it's odd the right side survived pretty much unscathed whereas the left one, built of stone, collapsed like a house of cards

Behind the clouds. When mountains are distant, yet near enough, you can only see them on sunny days, or when the cloud formation makes them visible. Also, sometimes you can see just their silhouette, depending on how clear the sky is. Same phenomenon happens in my hometown, Umag (Croatia) too - you can see the Alps in the distance when the weather allows you to. Although "our" Alps are further than this mountain here. Well, it happens to closer ones too. Witnessed that as normal in Seoul as well. But the mountains I could see from the neighbourhood I was living in were pretty close, so they wouldn't entirely disappear, it was just a matter of silhouette vs beautiful clear image of the mountain.

There is a crack on the road before the earth quake. Mother nature gave hidden warning sign. The Italian government should more alert.
That crack is not there because of mother nature. it could be from the heat of the sun or the humidity that freeze at night. Italy's roads are full of crack and holes because there's not enough money for the streets mainteinance

Lost my 2 closest friends next to the bell tower. Paola and Fabrizio.
This is so sad :( That sounds so trite to say it's sad. It's heartbreakingly horrible.
La mia bella Italia... My beautiful Italy, where my heart lies. It saddens me to see these photos. My thoughts with all Italians... Much love and respect to this beautiful, beautiful country.
With all the widespread damage its a miracle more lives weren't lost. What a sad sight. Most of those buildings are older than our country!
Those people will need help to get their lives back on. I stay in north-east Italy and we felt it in the middle of the night, it was so devastating :(
