As his name is Ali, I'm thinking most likely he is Muslim and those are subha, Islamic prayer beads....apart from Catholicism, many different faiths have prayer beads...

Its tasbih or praying beads. Similar to rosary but its for moslems. Hope this helps ^^

It's kind of traditional toy, actually. Based on prayer beads; but number of beads are less than Mishaba, or tasbih. So, not useful for pray, actually. It's a traditional and old-fashioned symbol of being man in Turkey.
