History (and sometimes, unfortunately, current events) shows us just how easily international borders can change, but we still like to think that they are permanent fixtures. These photos of different country borders around the world show you how both friendly and hostile nations like to fence off their turf.
Borders will often say much about countries' relationships. On the borders between friendly nations, especially those in the European Union's Schengen zone, the separations seem almost non-existent, marked by no more than a line or a road sign. Other borders are delineated by natural markers like rivers, or by man-made markers, like guard posts and demilitarized zones.

A few years ago (2008) there was a complicated murdercase in one of these borderhouses. The body of a woman who had been missing for 10 months was found hidden in her house on the exact border of Belgium and the Netherlands. A land surveyor had to determine if her body was primarily in the Netherlands or Belgium to determine which country should look for the killer. It was the Netherlands and her husband has since been convicted.

When the slaves won their was with the French, the settlement, for the loss of slave labor income, was that Haiti had to pay France for compensation!?!? They had to cover these payments (until 1949), by cutting down their trees to make charcoal. It destroyed their country.

Nothing changes all over the world. I saw relatives speaking, at the borderline between San Diego and Tijuana, and interchanging letters and cash through small openings in the fence while being watched closely by a Border Patrol officer.

This makes no sense- The woman in the red skirt is standing in a GRAVEYARD. You can see the crosses here. Just because there is a guy in a military uniform, doesn't mean this is a border and she is speaking to her relatives! We all draw lines and pay dividends; you just need a broader understanding of borders and currency. We're not the only territorial animals and we're not the only animals that make sacrifices, become defensive and even get greedy in securing that territory. The fact that we can specify, document and even (for the most part) agree upon our territories is a marvel of our species.

If your goal is a healthy forest, intentional neglect is better, from long-term perspective. You can already see that the Czech side has higher number of naturally grown tree species, while German only has manually planted spruces. In 50 years, the Czech forest will be much stronger and resistant against winds and infestations. Forests and bark beetle have coexisted for milions of years without us. The only problem with the beetle is that it destroys monoculture forest that we would otherwise exploit for wood (=money). Nature doesn't need us, so don't mess with it.

It's Egypt, Israel and Gaza. Gaza is not occupied, it's the only part of Arab Palestine not under direct Israeli control. Unfortunately, it is not ruled by the proper Palestinian Authority either and is shelling Israel with granades for no apparent reason.

There were no Scots in Scotland when this was built so the heading is totally incorrect. The Picts roamed this land the wall was purely built as a tax boundary for any goods that entered the Roman Empire rather than a wall to keep out marauding armies.

No, they never fully conquered the territory now known as Germany. They lost all territory east of the Rhine, for example, after losing a single battle to the Germans. They reconquered part of it but never fully.

"And the rest of the world"? Seems a bit of a stretch - the borders of the EU towards the rest of the world aren't all quite like this. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, this is Melilla - a tiny enclave of Spain in Morocco - that is flooded by thousands of (economic) refugees sometimes in a rush of hundreds at a time. They have little options but to build a fence and are rather unique "in Europe" even though they are on the African continent.

The border is between Jordan and the Occupied Palestinian Territories and the Occupied Golani Heights. It's virtually impossible to get a photo of Israel's borders as no Israeli government since 1947 (when they agreed to a much smaller territory) has EVER acquire land legally nor been willing to state what they believe the borders to be.

@htcer The border(s) are quit clean and quiet. The inland of Syria is full of blood, killings, hunger and you name it. However, Because the country is not "ISRAEL", no one gives a f**k... So take a moment and think about it. Since March 2011 there are over 190K of man, women and children got killed in Syria. I live in Panama and on the border town you can walk into a store that is in Panama and out the back door which is in Costa Rica. There are no signs and you get totally turned around. No one seems to care. But don't get caught in Costa Rica without being stamped out of Panama and vice versa.
