With so many discussions about why women don't choose to work in male-dominated fields, one reason often gets overlooked. Frequently women who end up working a job surrounded only by men experience all sorts of diminishing behavior from their colleagues. The lack of respect, harassment, and blatant sexism hold women back from taking jobs in any male-dominated industry. Recently a Twitter user asked women to share their experiences while working only with men. This thread perfectly highlights the problem women face while trying their strengths in 'boys club' workplaces. Scroll below to read them!

You have to be careful. I was working at Chase when they hired on a guy I had worked with previously. He was let go from his former job for pulling a chef's knife out of his briefcase and coming at someone. I went to HR. But because there was no absolute proof, they told me I couldn't warn people. I could get fired for that. I left an anonymous note in his bosses mailbox. Risked my job to warn him, but it seemed like a good risk / reward at the time.

I was in school in 7th grade and this (a*****e, sexist, etc) guy repeated the same thing that my (female) friend said, and the teacher said what a great idea it was. I raised my hand and said "Cristina actually said that first." The teacher told me to not disrespect her classroom.

I had a biochemistry professor who refused to answer my questions, and would just tell me I was stupid and shouldn't interrupt him. So I farmed my questions out to the men sitting next to me, where they became AMAZING, THANKS FOR ASKING THAT REALLY SMART QUESTION! Joke's on him though - six months later I was teaching in his department.

We had a problem with some broadcast equipment, a little while back, that required service and technical support from the local cable companies to come out to correct. One guy, i'll call "Bill", I've worked with on a few other occasions. Great guy, who knows that I know more about my system than pretty much anyone else. So, me, Bill, and three other guys from different companies are in the mechanical room trying to fix this problem. Bill happens to know the others, and introduced me as the one that knew the system. The rest of the meeting went pretty much as follows: Guy 1: "this isn't working" Me: "we should try xyz solution" Guy 2: "i don't know about that" Guy 1: "that would never work" Bill (looks at me, looks back at them): "(repeats word for word what I just said)" Guy 1: "That's a brilliant idea!" *solution works* Lots of eye rolling Bill did apologize to me afterwards. I told him he had nothing to apologize for, and thanked him for translating.

I've had that happen too. In a small problem-solving group of only 3 people. I suggested something, was looked at like I was too stupid for words. 5 minutes later one of the guys suggested the exact same thing (in almost exactly the same words) and the other guy was all "Great idea! We're doing that"

I worked in a lumber yard for a couple of years when I was in school, and the managers were actually pretty good, it was the customers that were creeps. One day I was working in the warehouse when a guy drove up and asked me to find "one of the guys" to load his truck. He was building a shed, so there was a lot of stuff, but someone had already bundled it on to a pallet and tied it down, so that left me with the easy job. ...///... He had a flat bed pickup, so when he went inside I checked the tie downs on his truck, then walked toward the forklift (operating a forklift is not particularly complicated and requires NO muscle). ...///... He grabbed my arm and said no, he wanted one of the GUYS to load his truck. Then he started ranting and screaming at me. My boss heard the hubbub and came out to see what was going on (in the meantime, people were lining up to pick up their orders, so there was an audience), and they guy yelled at him that he wanted "one of the guys" to load him up. ...

The manager looked at him, then looked at me and said, "So load his truck." I got the forklift and did just that. As I was walking to the forklift, I heard my manager say, "SHE is one of the guys. YOU are not." We never saw him again.

We call it getting "dresscoded" when somebody is given different clothes to wear at school by the office because their clothes are too "distracting". I have a friend who was wearing a tanktop and shorts, and she was given a jacket by the office that she had to wear all day (it was like 90 degrees). I wore a skirt to school one day (without tights: *gasp*!) and boys wouldn't stop telling me how I was going to get dresscoded. It was pretty embarrassing, and I've avoided wearing skirts/dresses since :/ I have a friend who was groped by a boy in the middle of class, and I know of a few girls who have had their bra straps flinged. Meanwhile, the school has done close to nothing to stop any of this :(

You should start a petition, get your parents involved, get local NGOs involved, your local church or University, someone should stop this madness! Since when wearing a skirt or a dress is not appropriate for a female? How come the majority of men don't revolt against the assumption they are not capable of controlling their "urges", when they are ? If we were all to wear black Burkas would we still be "distracting" ?!? :(( in 2019

Having worked in male dominated fields, I can stay there are certain challenges, but harassment has not been a regular occurrence (for me). There should not be anything normal or acceptable about harassment. People who do that are scum, regardless of the industry they are in.

I worked as a senior security officer several years ago, one night I was training a new male guard, so I had to be with him, about half way through the shift he offered to take me to his place so he could train me in a few things, to which I replied no, he then said if that is not to your liking we could have a threesome, I again told him no, a reminded him they we were on shift and this was inappropriate behaviour , and if he did it again I would be reporting him for sexual harassment, he didn't even skip a beat, and said don't be like that love, perhaps a swingers club would be more to your liking, I turned around got on my radio, called the Security manager above me, reported him, he got sent home, and an investigation was done, he was subsequently fired, as I was not the only woman to put in a complaint. But it never should have happened, it was a public venue, we were working the door, and customers and staff were in full view and within hearing distance.

Female, qualified welder ,for years it's been the same, "where are the men at, I need some welding done" sexual harrassment from co workers who would randomly come to my home, not invited and they had partners with children, then upon refusal of there advances turned into out right bullying, tired of the industry treatment ,my last boss told me qualifications didn't mean anything and that any idiot could weld while he paid male white workers more and gave me all the crappy work he could find, including building a new fence for his house, which he drove me to, probably over 20 KMs away from my work place which made me feel very uncomfortable. I have emphysema now and I can no longer weld, I'm sad because I was an excellent welder managing with a child and had to overcome some many obstacles and problems, feels like I should never had tried in the end I have nothing to show for all the blood , sweat and tears

I completely agree. It makes me rethink my career and if I should get my law degree in employment law with a focus on defending the women (and men) who have had to deal with abuse and the companies who basically allow it (but first I need to pay off my first Master's degree :-/

Every time my male boss and I are in meetings, he always says "what's your name again?"- typically it's when we are in meetings with vendors or people he views of authority. Its belittling. Now when he says it, I reply with some random name like George, Ralph or Biggie "Z". He looks more foolish than me now.

I ran into a friend who asked what I was doing lately. I told him I was working at the sawmill. Later his wife said he told her "that's the first time that girl ever lied to me" Soon after he saw my mom, asked her "What's Jane been up to?" She said "She's working at the sawmill" lol

Here's my best story about working with all guys: I did wrestling in High School, and since I live in North Carolina I was the only girl. I was really nervous my first day, since it was my first time ever wrestling. However, none of the guys acted that weird, they were really patient with me and taught me the different moves. A lot of them became like older brothers to me and were really encouraging. Even though I haven't done wrestling since, I still have really good memories of working with those guys. I love my wrestling brothers!

1) Worked a roadside hot dog stand one summer and was repeatedly asked to wear a bikini to attract more business. I was 15. 2) Worked at a sawmill one summer during uni and was called into the office and told not to wear a tank top (it was HOT in the mill) to work because it was a liability to the men with saws. 3) Coach baseball for my son's team. Other team's coaches would assume my husband (bench dad) was the coach EVERY GAME, even though I wore my league hat and my jersey said COACH.

I was asked to wear a bathing suit and work in a store window. I told the genius, "I have a terrible body." His look of disappointment was priceless."You do?" I nodded mournfully back. I was old enough to stand up for myself. Asking a kid to wear a bikini -- and asking repeatedly -- is pretty disgusting.

When I was 18 and working in a pub, one of the owners called me over as I was coming away from clearing a table of plates so my hands were full. He wanted to order a drink and decided since I couldn't carry the money, it would somehow be impossible for me to just come back for the money, so the only solution would be to tuck the note into my top over my boobs. He then said "Oh that doesn't look right" so then REMOVED THE MONEY from my top, and put it in my back pocket!!! All while I just stood there stunned insisting I could just come back for the money when I bring the drink over. Considering he usually never paid for his drinks I was convinced it was just an excuse to touch me. So rank.

I was the only female age 20 amongst 30 guys. Wasnt easy - but I made myself an honorary guy. Within a year I could match them in physical performance. 40kg with one hand - no problem. - shift 2 tons of steel on and off a machine - - 4 tons in total in a day -- - I did it. We had visitors looking round sometimes watching us work. One couldnt believe the stuff I was lifting - 40kg coils of metal strip - like it was nothing. He asked to lift it - and couldnt. Was so proud the day I managed to cut 5mm thick mild steel by hand with tin-snips without having to ask for help from a man.

I kind of made the effort to not act female in that environment (early 80's). Laughed at their jokes, even made comments about the obligatory nude pin-ups inside their locker doors. Perfected a walk that one described as "gliding" so they would have no reason to watch me from behind. Could do anything the guys could and they respected that. They were great guys. No harassment, no sexual intimidation. Kind of felt like a guest in a male environment. and loved the job.

I work in a female dominated field (therapy and counseling) but I happen to work at a jail where about 90% of the CO's are male. I don't have any specific stories, but there is a lot of little comments here and there about them being surprised a little white girl can handle working with criminals. It took me about 6 months to get the point where they would even talk to me because they didn't think I could handle it. For the most part now, it's okay cause I've proven to them that I won't take their s**t, but once in awhile I hear a comment or two.

I worked in a little shop a while ago. Every now and then a representative or salesman would walk in and asked "where's your boss". I got really tired of it and started saying things like "Why do you think I am not the boss?" One time a salesWOMAN walked in and asked "are you the shopmanager?" Its peanuts compared to other things I read here but still.

in my mid-20s I was helping out my dad at the bowling alley he owned and I grew up in. Working there was second nature to me. Manager hired new guy who comes in and starts mansplaining to me and "assigning" me tasks (I was supposed to train him). I said "look boy, my dad owns this place and I've worked here all my life. I know what my tasks are and what yours are". He grabs his crotch saying "you call me boy? I'll have you know I'm a MAN". I walked away and did my work. Reported it to the manager who hired him, my dad told me the next day new guy was fired.

I'm a man. In my office, 30 minutes before we leave one of the female workers (any one of 3) will come in to my room and ask if I have any cups or pkates, then take it away and fill the dishwasher up. It's always one of the girls, never the guys. I assume they were specifically asked to do the cleaning up. But this isn't their job. They are office managers, programmers and designers. I don't think they see the sexism in it, infact I even tried to clean away my own cups and I was told by one of them not too that because they'll clean it up later. I'm trying to be a modern man but it appears I have to adhere to sexism in the office. I'm so confused about 2019!!

Sadly, men aren't the only ones caught up in sexist roles. It's so ingrained into society men and women don't realise how they come across. My husband, who is wonderful to me and who I love dearly is still sexist. He would walk home from a night out but I'm not 'allowed', little things like that which come from a position of caring but are quite belittling, a bit like women always clearing up dishes. It's a strange world we live in.

When I was young I was living in a group home and we had to do counseling. One of my counselors (after I had been talking about my terrible problems, being abused, etc) said to me "Well at least you're pretty you could be a model or something". I gave up on counselors that day. Made me feel like s***, just one more person I couldn't talk to!

I work with trade shops- one incident that made me the most uncomfortable was when a project manager kept referring to me as various foremen's "lady friend." In business emails. I've also had to stop ordering from companies because the sales reps liked to come in later in the day when I was the only one left working to "personally" deliver parts and check me out in a very obvious manner.

Men are Jack asses. And can’t think about anything but sex. Also, when this happens, they blame their lack of control on the woman who did nothing to earn that comment! Also, we don’t say rude and sexist comments when they go commando, and we don’t point or stare when they do. And we certainly don’t give them such amazing “power” over their behavior of their bodies, when they do this crude and rude s**t. They can’t even keep the work place safe for women! What if it were their own daughters or so s being harassed, and having rude and sexually explicit comments said to them? It’s no different than when any other young girl or boy gets hit with that rude c**p. I say, if they can’t even control their bodies, their mouths or how they speak to a woman at work, or try and demean her, then hey need to be let go, or just fired. I wouldn’t want such an unsafe work environment in my company, or risk a lawsuit because they couldn’t control themselves! That are sick, poor impulse control, cont.

I work in IT along with several other very capable women. One of the nicest (female) coworkers that I have ever had the pleasure of working with went to take her car to get a standard service/oil change done and these 5 guys on her team started telling her how they could teach her because it is something so simple she should be able to do it herself. When she said she did know how but still had free oil changes at the dealership where she bought her car, they started quizzing her on exactly how to check and change oil or how to change a tire. It went on until she mistook the timing belt for the accessory drive belt and they all laughed.

I ran a male dominated business for a few years. One time had an interviewee come in for an interview, he explained that he was there to see the "guy in charge about a job that he was basically already promised", I offered him a seat and a drink, I sat down and proceeded to start the interview, he shut me down immediately, explaining that his interview was with the "guy in charge", refused to be interviewed by me. He actually sat there for 21/2 hours waiting for his interview with the man in charge, he finally stopped another employee and asked where the man in charge was, employee explained that there was no man in charge that the place was run by a woman. He was mortified, he had been accepting drink refills and waiting for his interview while I interviewed 4 other candidates and found the right one. He actually called back the next day to speak with a manager because our staff had been "unprofessional and had screwed him out of his interview".

While working in a 50s diner, which was my absolute FIRST job, not only was it strictly forbidden that we sit down (even with zero customers in the restaurant) unless we were on our 30 minute lunch break (despite it being totally okay for the male managers to sit whenever and wherever), but one manager, who was old enough to be my father, would constantly say sexually suggestive things to me. One time, while decorating a paper hat for a kid's birthday, I was bent over a counter while I worked on it (as I said, we weren't allowed to sit EVER), said manager comes up behind me and says "You shouldn't bend over like that, it makes me want to just PLUG IT IN." I was not ever flirtatious with him in any stretch of the imagination, but I was a damn kid working my first job and this was downright predatory. Be better, folks.

I work in a male dominated factory. Some guys have been creeps with their smiles but most of them just say dirty things about the few girls that work there, but they've never said anything to me like that..at first. They joke about my big boobs like when running down the stairs they have said i need to slow down before i knock myself out. But I've been there for 14 years. Everyone that's been there with me treat me like the little sister that acts like a tomboy. One thing that does stick out was when i applied for a forklift job somewhere else. The interviewer literally laughed at me and said, "you know how to drive a forklift? Yeah well, i think i have some office jobs for you." I had 3 years forklift experience and zero office knowledge. i told him no thanks. I told my co-workers and they laughed at the guy saying they missed out on hiring someone fully capable. I didn't apply anywhere else again.

It's 1990 and I'm applying for the job of systems analyst/programmer. The plant manager is interviewing me. I have a systems engineering degree. He asks "You have an engineering degree? Isn't that unusual? Women aren't as good at math as men." I replied, "I made A's and B's in my math classes and I DIDN'T sleep with the professor to get those grades. Besides, SHE would have been upset if I had suggested it." And I figured that was it, no job. But I got it anyway and avoided the creep from then on.

I worked in a male-dominated industry for over a decade and was subject to hundreds of inappropriate sexist comments and sexual harassment. If I, or any other women, complained about the comment or treatment we were labeled a "b***h" and were told we couldn't take a joke.

Friend of mine schooled her drawing group. The men would draw the usual female superheroes--the sort that needed bracing fore and aft to be able to walk anywhere. So one day she drew the male equivalent: with a rolling cart in front to carry it all. When they objected, she smiled sweetly and said, "Shouldn't he be as well endowed as yours?"

Agrrr! These stories make me so mad! I was once sitting at a sports center with my laptop working in Photoshop, waiting for my daughter to finish practice. A guy walks from behind and says "Wow - I see some Photoshop action here!" Asked me what I was doing and then proceeded to tell me what was the right way to do the task. When I disagreed he said "Trust me, I do this for living!" Ugh! I've been doing this for living for over 20 years now and most likely started doing it while that guy was still in kindergarten!

In my work (an IT company) all was extremely great. Never had a better workplace. But the customers... Omg. Every single time they wouldn't understand troubleshooting or instructions to get their device working again, they'd ask to speak to "a Technical Team Agent", or "the manager", or "a man that knows his work". Dudes. I was the manager AND a Technical agent (actually expert). Too bad.

So many stories. This will never stop. The schools do nothing, the itnernet is full of stereotypes, female youtuber all act and look like Barbies - if anything, it's even worse than it was 30 years ago. Our planet will tunr into a wasteland before women are finally seen as full human beings.

I worked in a mostly female dominated field (country hotel and restaurant) and our male boss would call all the female workers b*tch, wh*re and sl*t all day long, telling us we needed a big D so that we would work better after. I often felt traumatised when leaving work, it was an absolute awful place to work in and ironically our customers would always tell us that we were lucky to be working in such an awesome place since they could only see the beautiful terrace overlooking the countryside and didn’t know about the atmosphere in the back.

We all have stories. Here’s one of mine: I am a little person. A guy started working maintenance and I was a housekeeper. He would literally pick me up. Just “joking” around. He asked if I wanted to hang out outside of work. I said maybe and headed home. Over the next few days “let’s hang out” turned into “let’s get coffee” turned into “let’s get dinner”. He even followed me to the edge of the property one day trying to get my number. I realize now how stupid it was but I kept brushing it off. Then I get called into my supervisors office and she says, “it’s not a good idea to date a coworker.” I’m like I have a date? Apparently he told people we were dating. I believe he was let go shortly after.

I work a lot as a hostess for a very well known car brand. I love cars and always know everything about them. But many, too many times have I been asked the same question: if I buy the car, do you come with it? I also had this happen: I was promoting two different cars at the same time, one was a super sports car and one was an electric city car. I was answering questions about the electric car and discussing it with a middle aged man dressed up in a suit. A cocky teenager comes up and asks the suit man if he can tell him more about the sporty car and turn it on for the sound. The man's reaction made me smile, as he told the teenager ''You're going to have to ask this young lady here, she's the car expert.'' And the boy was silent for the rest of my presentation of the car. But working with cars is the best worst job I ever had.

My niece when in HS took auto body at the local vocational school she then went to a school to get her associates in Auto Body repair and basic Mechanics. Now I'll be honest at the time she looked like she should work for Hooters, big chested and fairly petite. When she was done at school she tried to get a job in Auto Body so she could finish her ASE certification ... yeah she was told that they wouldn't hire her because she would be a distraction to them men. I hold a PhD in Educational technology and I do a lot of different things dealing with technology. My husband is a PhD in Computer Science (mostly theory) More often than not people with computer problems or wanting advice on website design look immediately to my husband for answers ... the look on their faces when he immediately tells them to talk to me as I am the one that does that stuff for him is priceless.

I used to work in a grocery store and one day a woman came in and asked if I knew of someone who could help her change a flat (woman was dressed in very expensive clothes) I said sure give me a minute... called someone up to take my place at the register and went outside, proceeded to start taking off the flat when a male coworker came out and said "Let me do that" I looked at him and says "no thanks I've got it" 10 minutes later I had the woman squared away and told her where to go to get her tire repaired. She gave me a hug and slipped a hundred bucks in my pocket (I didn't find it till later). My coworker was pissed.... Another time a regular's son came in and searched me out in the store to help him fix his bike ( I had done it before) and another coworker was like I'll do it I know what I am doing... I said so do I and went to fix the kids bike.

I think that although these stories are pretty crazy and those guys should be ashamed of themselves, i believe they are the exception and not the general consensus. Yeah there's some messed up men, just like there are some messed up women in this world. Men are WAY less likely to admit they have been harassed/bullied/harmed by women also because it automatically implies they are weak and things escalate, but i hope common sense prevails and we remain conscious of the fact that there's bad apples in any camp and that the bad apples don't reflect the general public.

I am an engineer and started my career in the 70s. I have lots of such encounters but I will mention two. I went for a job interview that was about an hour away. I was directed to a room for the interview. There were several men who all started laughing when I introduced myself. They had "assumed" there was a typo on my resume and I was really a man. They didn't bother with an interview. ( As an aside, there was a male engineer, well-respected in his field, who had a sex change. She was no longer considered to be good at her job. This was in British Columbia, Canada, I believe.) As a quality engineer in one job, I spent a lot of time on the shop floor. One day the plant manager went onto the floor with me. He started holding my hand. Wait! What?

I will say after having several roles in male dominated work places my biggest issue has been how unlady like I am. I curse, I swear, I cut s**t short cause I don’t want to or need to hear all the fluffy words. I was told once to be softer to which I responded if they need their hand held tell them to call their wife or mum I don’t have time for that s**t and I don’t get paid for it. Never got asked again and my bosses appreciate that I don’t take stuff personal I just default to legal process and stop everything till they follow what I have directed them to. Funny enough my male managers learn quick if someone gets pissed at me and runs to tell them it’s because they want to bypass doing things correctly and get away with poor planning and trying not to get their a*s handed to them.

At 49, after working in a variety of industries, I personally prefer to work in predominantly male ones. This way I avoid the backstabbing and gossip that is inherent in predominantly female environments. I am still approached regularly by men who will "try it on" but I've learnt to deal with it. I've been asked to leave a job, by a female owner, because her highest money earner was behaving inappropriately around me. He was the reason her business survived. I wasn't happy about it but I understood. I certainly "educated" him on the way out though *wink* My point is, sexual harassment is a fairly new catch cry. I can actually remember when it started to get bandied about. It takes time to re-educate and I'm glad it's finally happening on a large scale however there will always, always be morons out there. They DO NOT CARE about what's right or wrong. I'd rather have a thick skin than rely on others to take responsibility for my feelings.

im just in middle school still, but i do like leading projects as i am good at keeping everything on track, assigning roles, and getting a nice finished project. this project, i was assigned to a group with a boy who wanted to be the leader to. we decided to both be the leader, and try to collaborate. when i gave out directions, helped people, or gave constructive criticism,in a nice voice, very kindly, i was called BOSSY. when the boy did it, it was ALRIGHT. he did it in a harsh voice. people listened "cause they could do nothing about it than just listen"

Stay positive people, uwu the newer generations of males have less old fashioned thought processes are more egalitarian and respectful of women. I believe things will get better. Only some decades ago, at least in the US, we were still fighting for the right to vote. We've gotten pretty far from there and I'm sure we'll continue to advance to a point where everywhere we can stand equal to a man and they will support and respect that and many do already. :3

There was a crowd outside the campground office, rather than an orderly queue, and a lot of muttering. The female assistant warden came out and explained that people would be served in the order they had signed the list. The muttering increased until the male warden (most were not aware of the difference in rank, I'm sure) came out and said the exact same thing she had said. A woman near me said, "She just said that." and I replied, "Yes, but people don't listen to women." True, that.

I worked in a lumber yard for a couple of years when I was in school, and the managers were actually pretty good, it was the customers that were creeps. One day I was working in the warehouse when a guy drove up and asked me to find "one of the guys" to load his truck. He was building a shed, so there was a lot of stuff, but someone had already bundled it on to a pallet and tied it down, so that left me with the easy job. ...///... He had a flat bed pickup, so when he went inside I checked the tie downs on his truck, then walked toward the forklift (operating a forklift is not particularly complicated and requires NO muscle). ...///... He grabbed my arm and said no, he wanted one of the GUYS to load his truck. Then he started ranting and screaming at me. My boss heard the hubbub and came out to see what was going on (in the meantime, people were lining up to pick up their orders, so there was an audience), and they guy yelled at him that he wanted "one of the guys" to load him up. ...

We call it getting "dresscoded" when somebody is given different clothes to wear at school by the office because their clothes are too "distracting". I have a friend who was wearing a tanktop and shorts, and she was given a jacket by the office that she had to wear all day (it was like 90 degrees). I wore a skirt to school one day (without tights: *gasp*!) and boys wouldn't stop telling me how I was going to get dresscoded. It was pretty embarrassing, and I've avoided wearing skirts/dresses since :/ I have a friend who was groped by a boy in the middle of class, and I know of a few girls who have had their bra straps flinged. Meanwhile, the school has done close to nothing to stop any of this :(

Having worked in male dominated fields, I can stay there are certain challenges, but harassment has not been a regular occurrence (for me). There should not be anything normal or acceptable about harassment. People who do that are scum, regardless of the industry they are in.

I worked as a senior security officer several years ago, one night I was training a new male guard, so I had to be with him, about half way through the shift he offered to take me to his place so he could train me in a few things, to which I replied no, he then said if that is not to your liking we could have a threesome, I again told him no, a reminded him they we were on shift and this was inappropriate behaviour , and if he did it again I would be reporting him for sexual harassment, he didn't even skip a beat, and said don't be like that love, perhaps a swingers club would be more to your liking, I turned around got on my radio, called the Security manager above me, reported him, he got sent home, and an investigation was done, he was subsequently fired, as I was not the only woman to put in a complaint. But it never should have happened, it was a public venue, we were working the door, and customers and staff were in full view and within hearing distance.

Female, qualified welder ,for years it's been the same, "where are the men at, I need some welding done" sexual harrassment from co workers who would randomly come to my home, not invited and they had partners with children, then upon refusal of there advances turned into out right bullying, tired of the industry treatment ,my last boss told me qualifications didn't mean anything and that any idiot could weld while he paid male white workers more and gave me all the crappy work he could find, including building a new fence for his house, which he drove me to, probably over 20 KMs away from my work place which made me feel very uncomfortable. I have emphysema now and I can no longer weld, I'm sad because I was an excellent welder managing with a child and had to overcome some many obstacles and problems, feels like I should never had tried in the end I have nothing to show for all the blood , sweat and tears

Every time my male boss and I are in meetings, he always says "what's your name again?"- typically it's when we are in meetings with vendors or people he views of authority. Its belittling. Here's my best story about working with all guys: I did wrestling in High School, and since I live in North Carolina I was the only girl. I was really nervous my first day, since it was my first time ever wrestling. However, none of the guys acted that weird, they were really patient with me and taught me the different moves. A lot of them became like older brothers to me and were really encouraging. Even though I haven't done wrestling since, I still have really good memories of working with those guys. I love my wrestling brothers!

When I was 18 and working in a pub, one of the owners called me over as I was coming away from clearing a table of plates so my hands were full. He wanted to order a drink and decided since I couldn't carry the money, it would somehow be impossible for me to just come back for the money, so the only solution would be to tuck the note into my top over my boobs. He then said "Oh that doesn't look right" so then REMOVED THE MONEY from my top, and put it in my back pocket!!! All while I just stood there stunned insisting I could just come back for the money when I bring the drink over. I was the only female age 20 amongst 30 guys. Wasnt easy - but I made myself an honorary guy. Within a year I could match them in physical performance. 40kg with one hand - no problem. - shift 2 tons of steel on and off a machine - - 4 tons in total in a day -- - I did it. We had visitors looking round sometimes watching us work. One couldnt believe the stuff I was lifting - 40kg coils of metal strip - like it was nothing. He asked to lift it - and couldnt. Was so proud the day I managed to cut 5mm thick mild steel by hand with tin-snips without having to ask for help from a man.

I kind of made the effort to not act female in that environment (early 80's). Laughed at their jokes, even made comments about the obligatory nude pin-ups inside their locker doors. Perfected a walk that one described as "gliding" so they would have no reason to watch me from behind. Could do anything the guys could and they respected that. They were great guys. No harassment, no sexual intimidation. Kind of felt like a guest in a male environment. and loved the job.

I work in a female dominated field (therapy and counseling) but I happen to work at a jail where about 90% of the CO's are male. I don't have any specific stories, but there is a lot of little comments here and there about them being surprised a little white girl can handle working with criminals. It took me about 6 months to get the point where they would even talk to me because they didn't think I could handle it. For the most part now, it's okay cause I've proven to them that I won't take their s**t, but once in awhile I hear a comment or two.

in my mid-20s I was helping out my dad at the bowling alley he owned and I grew up in. Working there was second nature to me. Manager hired new guy who comes in and starts mansplaining to me and "assigning" me tasks (I was supposed to train him). I said "look boy, my dad owns this place and I've worked here all my life. I know what my tasks are and what yours are". He grabs his crotch saying "you call me boy? I'll have you know I'm a MAN". I walked away and did my work. Reported it to the manager who hired him, my dad told me the next day new guy was fired.

I'm a man. In my office, 30 minutes before we leave one of the female workers (any one of 3) will come in to my room and ask if I have any cups or pkates, then take it away and fill the dishwasher up. It's always one of the girls, never the guys. I assume they were specifically asked to do the cleaning up. But this isn't their job. They are office managers, programmers and designers. I don't think they see the sexism in it, infact I even tried to clean away my own cups and I was told by one of them not too that because they'll clean it up later. I'm trying to be a modern man but it appears I have to adhere to sexism in the office. I'm so confused about 2019!!

Sadly, men aren't the only ones caught up in sexist roles. It's so ingrained into society men and women don't realise how they come across. My husband, who is wonderful to me and who I love dearly is still sexist. He would walk home from a night out but I'm not 'allowed', little things like that which come from a position of caring but are quite belittling, a bit like women always clearing up dishes. It's a strange world we live in.

One of my counselors (after I had been talking about my terrible problems, being abused, etc) said to me "Well at least you're pretty you could be a model or something". I work with trade shops- one incident that made me the most uncomfortable was when a project manager kept referring to me as various foremen's "lady friend." In business emails. I've also had to stop ordering from companies because the sales reps liked to come in later in the day when I was the only one left working to "personally" deliver parts and check me out in a very obvious manner.

Also, we don’t say rude and sexist comments when they go commando, and we don’t point or stare when they do. And we certainly don’t give them such amazing “power” over their behavior of their bodies, when they do this crude and rude s**t. They can’t even keep the work place safe for women! What if it were their own daughters or so s being harassed, and having rude and sexually explicit comments said to them? It’s no different than when any other young girl or boy gets hit with that rude c**p. I say, if they can’t even control their bodies, their mouths or how they speak to a woman at work, or try and demean her, then hey need to be let go, or just fired. I wouldn’t want such an unsafe work environment in my company, or risk a lawsuit because they couldn’t control themselves! That are sick, poor impulse control, cont.

I work in IT along with several other very capable women. One of the nicest (female) coworkers that I have ever had the pleasure of working with went to take her car to get a standard service/oil change done and these 5 guys on her team started telling her how they could teach her because it is something so simple she should be able to do it herself. When she said she did know how but still had free oil changes at the dealership where she bought her car, they started quizzing her on exactly how to check and change oil or how to change a tire. It went on until she mistook the timing belt for the accessory drive belt and they all laughed.

I ran a male dominated business for a few years. One time had an interviewee come in for an interview, he explained that he was there to see the "guy in charge about a job that he was basically already promised", I offered him a seat and a drink, I sat down and proceeded to start the interview, he shut me down immediately, explaining that his interview was with the "guy in charge", refused to be interviewed by me. He actually sat there for 21/2 hours waiting for his interview with the man in charge, he finally stopped another employee and asked where the man in charge was, employee explained that there was no man in charge that the place was run by a woman. He was mortified, he had been accepting drink refills and waiting for his interview while I interviewed 4 other candidates and found the right one. He actually called back the next day to speak with a manager because our staff had been "unprofessional and had screwed him out of his interview".

While working in a 50s diner, which was my absolute FIRST job, not only was it strictly forbidden that we sit down (even with zero customers in the restaurant) unless we were on our 30 minute lunch break (despite it being totally okay for the male managers to sit whenever and wherever), but one manager, who was old enough to be my father, would constantly say sexually suggestive things to me. One time, while decorating a paper hat for a kid's birthday, I was bent over a counter while I worked on it (as I said, we weren't allowed to sit EVER), said manager comes up behind me and says "You shouldn't bend over like that, it makes me want to just PLUG IT IN." I was not ever flirtatious with him in any stretch of the imagination, but I was a damn kid working my first job and this was downright predatory. Be better, folks.

I work in a male dominated factory. Some guys have been creeps with their smiles but most of them just say dirty things about the few girls that work there, but they've never said anything to me like that..at first. They joke about my big boobs like when running down the stairs they have said i need to slow down before i knock myself out. But I've been there for 14 years. Everyone that's been there with me treat me like the little sister that acts like a tomboy. One thing that does stick out was when i applied for a forklift job somewhere else. The interviewer literally laughed at me and said, "you know how to drive a forklift? Yeah well, i think i have some office jobs for you." I had 3 years forklift experience and zero office knowledge. i told him no thanks. I told my co-workers and they laughed at the guy saying they missed out on hiring someone fully capable. I didn't apply anywhere else again.

It's 1990 and I'm applying for the job of systems analyst/programmer. The plant manager is interviewing me. I have a systems engineering degree. He asks "You have an engineering degree? Isn't that unusual? Women aren't as good at math as men." I replied, "I made A's and B's in my math classes and I DIDN'T sleep with the professor to get those grades. Besides, SHE would have been upset if I had suggested it." And I figured that was it, no job. But I got it anyway and avoided the creep from then on.

Agrrr! These stories make me so mad! I was once sitting at a sports center with my laptop working in Photoshop, waiting for my daughter to finish practice. A guy walks from behind and says "Wow - I see some Photoshop action here!" Asked me what I was doing and then proceeded to tell me what was the right way to do the task. When I disagreed he said "Trust me, I do this for living!" Ugh! I've been doing this for living for over 20 years now and most likely started doing it while that guy was still in kindergarten!

In my work (an IT company) all was extremely great. Never had a better workplace. But the customers... Omg. Every single time they wouldn't understand troubleshooting or instructions to get their device working again, they'd ask to speak to "a Technical Team Agent", or "the manager", or "a man that knows his work". Dudes. I was the manager AND a Technical agent (actually expert). Too bad.

While at a law firm, I had an attorney stop me in the middle of a large conference room and remark that there was only one way to find out if I was a “real” redhead as he stared down at my crotch! I told him he’d never know. I hate that s**t.

So many stories. This will never stop. The schools do nothing, the itnernet is full of stereotypes, female youtuber all act and look like Barbies - if anything, it's even worse than it was 30 years ago. Our planet will tunr into a wasteland before women are finally seen as full human beings.

Well, i'm glad to say that my school system is more involved and DOES step in. I know it's excruciatingly slow, but changes ARE taking place, little by little. Have hope. Many of the younger generations of males support us and equal rights for women

I worked in a mostly female dominated field (country hotel and restaurant) and our male boss would call all the female workers b*tch, wh*re and sl*t all day long, telling us we needed a big D so that we would work better after. I often felt traumatised when leaving work, it was an absolute awful place to work in and ironically our customers would always tell us that we were lucky to be working in such an awesome place since they could only see the beautiful terrace overlooking the countryside and didn’t know about the atmosphere in the back.

We all have stories. Here’s one of mine: I am a little person. A guy started working maintenance and I was a housekeeper. He would literally pick me up. Just “joking” around. He asked if I wanted to hang out outside of work. I said maybe and headed home. Over the next few days “let’s hang out” turned into “let’s get coffee” turned into “let’s get dinner”. He even followed me to the edge of the property one day trying to get my number. I realize now how stupid it was but I kept brushing it off. Then I get called into my supervisors office and she says, “it’s not a good idea to date a coworker.” I’m like I have a date? Apparently he told people we were dating. I believe he was let go shortly after.

I work a lot as a hostess for a very well known car brand. I love cars and always know everything about them. But many, too many times have I been asked the same question: if I buy the car, do you come with it? I also had this happen: I was promoting two different cars at the same time, one was a super sports car and one was an electric city car. I was answering questions about the electric car and discussing it with a middle aged man dressed up in a suit. A cocky teenager comes up and asks the suit man if he can tell him more about the sporty car and turn it on for the sound. The man's reaction made me smile, as he told the teenager ''You're going to have to ask this young lady here, she's the car expert.'' And the boy was silent for the rest of my presentation of the car. But working with cars is the best worst job I ever had.

My niece when in HS took auto body at the local vocational school she then went to a school to get her associates in Auto Body repair and basic Mechanics. Now I'll be honest at the time she looked like she should work for Hooters, big chested and fairly petite. When she was done at school she tried to get a job in Auto Body so she could finish her ASE certification ... yeah she was told that they wouldn't hire her because she would be a distraction to them men. I hold a PhD in Educational technology and I do a lot of different things dealing with technology. My husband is a PhD in Computer Science (mostly theory) More often than not people with computer problems or wanting advice on website design look immediately to my husband for answers ... the look on their faces when he immediately tells them to talk to me as I am the one that does that stuff for him is priceless.

I used to work in a grocery store and one day a woman came in and asked if I knew of someone who could help her change a flat (woman was dressed in very expensive clothes) I said sure give me a minute... called someone up to take my place at the register and went outside, proceeded to start taking off the flat when a male coworker came out and said "Let me do that" I looked at him and says "no thanks I've got it" 10 minutes later I had the woman squared away and told her where to go to get her tire repaired. She gave me a hug and slipped a hundred bucks in my pocket (I didn't find it till later). My coworker was pissed.... Another time a regular's son came in and searched me out in the store to help him fix his bike ( I had done it before) and another coworker was like I'll do it I know what I am doing... I said so do I and went to fix the kids bike.

I think that although these stories are pretty crazy and those guys should be ashamed of themselves, i believe they are the exception and not the general consensus. Yeah there's some messed up men, just like there are some messed up women in this world. Men are WAY less likely to admit they have been harassed/bullied/harmed by women also because it automatically implies they are weak and things escalate, but i hope common sense prevails and we remain conscious of the fact that there's bad apples in any camp and that the bad apples don't reflect the general public.

I am an engineer and started my career in the 70s. I have lots of such encounters but I will mention two. I went for a job interview that was about an hour away. I was directed to a room for the interview. There were several men who all started laughing when I introduced myself. They had "assumed" there was a typo on my resume and I was really a man. They didn't bother with an interview. ( As an aside, there was a male engineer, well-respected in his field, who had a sex change. She was no longer considered to be good at her job. This was in British Columbia, Canada, I believe.) As a quality engineer in one job, I spent a lot of time on the shop floor. One day the plant manager went onto the floor with me. He started holding my hand. Wait! What?

I will say after having several roles in male dominated work places my biggest issue has been how unlady like I am. I curse, I swear, I cut s**t short cause I don’t want to or need to hear all the fluffy words. I was told once to be softer to which I responded if they need their hand held tell them to call their wife or mum I don’t have time for that s**t and I don’t get paid for it. Never got asked again and my bosses appreciate that I don’t take stuff personal I just default to legal process and stop everything till they follow what I have directed them to. Funny enough my male managers learn quick if someone gets pissed at me and runs to tell them it’s because they want to bypass doing things correctly and get away with poor planning and trying not to get their a*s handed to them.

It makes me angry to think there are people that act this way to other humans. I don't understand why they think it's acceptable and how they get away with it. Makes me very disheartened.

At 49, after working in a variety of industries, I personally prefer to work in predominantly male ones. This way I avoid the backstabbing and gossip that is inherent in predominantly female environments. I am still approached regularly by men who will "try it on" but I've learnt to deal with it. I've been asked to leave a job, by a female owner, because her highest money earner was behaving inappropriately around me. He was the reason her business survived. I wasn't happy about it but I understood. I certainly "educated" him on the way out though *wink* My point is, sexual harassment is a fairly new catch cry. I can actually remember when it started to get bandied about. It takes time to re-educate and I'm glad it's finally happening on a large scale however there will always, always be morons out there. They DO NOT CARE about what's right or wrong. I'd rather have a thick skin than rely on others to take responsibility for my feelings.

im just in middle school still, but i do like leading projects as i am good at keeping everything on track, assigning roles, and getting a nice finished project. this project, i was assigned to a group with a boy who wanted to be the leader to. we decided to both be the leader, and try to collaborate. when i gave out directions, helped people, or gave constructive criticism,in a nice voice, very kindly, i was called BOSSY. when the boy did it, it was ALRIGHT. he did it in a harsh voice. people listened "cause they could do nothing about it than just listen"

Stay positive people, uwu the newer generations of males have less old fashioned thought processes are more egalitarian and respectful of women. I believe things will get better. Only some decades ago, at least in the US, we were still fighting for the right to vote. We've gotten pretty far from there and I'm sure we'll continue to advance to a point where everywhere we can stand equal to a man and they will support and respect that and many do already. :3

There was a crowd outside the campground office, rather than an orderly queue, and a lot of muttering. The female assistant warden came out and explained that people would be served in the order they had signed the list. The muttering increased until the male warden (most were not aware of the difference in rank, I'm sure) came out and said the exact same thing she had said. A woman near me said, "She just said that." and I replied, "Yes, but people don't listen to women." True, that.

True. especially with skin colour... Everytime any human being is beeing mean or disrespecting someone black, they emediately think it's because of their color.. but white people also get disrespected on a daily basis.. so maybe there are just a******s and not necessarily racist.. i don't say there are no racist people out there, but maybe it's not always always about your skin colour when you get mistreated or disrespected...
