Someone Asks People To Share What Architecture Nightmares They’ve Seen, People Deliver (30 Pics)
Not every architect can be an Antoni Gaudi or an Art Vandalay - some make do with the spaces they are given and yes, some do make silly architecture design mistakes. When the results aren't downright dangerous they can be funny, which is why Twitter user Sarah Schauer decided recently to ask people to send her their worst crappy design/architecture pics that they have.
It's fair to say that the internet didn't disappoint. From oddly placed toilets - toilets seem to feature a lot on this list - to slides that lead to certain death, it turns out that there are some real design fails out there! So we've seen the consequences of bad interior design, so what makes for good design? There are a few basic principles to stick to if you want to make sure your design is practical, relevant and makes sense!
According to Dieter Rams, a German industrial designer who was responsible for the design of Braun’s consumer products for many years, there are 10 principles of good design, also known as the '10 commandments.' Even though they were written long ago and technology has advanced beyond his wildest dreams, Dieter's principles still apply today!
Furniture designers Vitsoe have worked closely with Dieter Rams for decades, and helpfully summarize his founding principles of good design with the following explanations:
Good design is innovative: The possibilities for innovation are not, by any means, exhausted. Technological development is always offering new opportunities for innovative design. But innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology, and can never be an end in itself.
Good design makes a product useful: A product is bought to be used. It has to satisfy certain criteria, not only functional, but also psychological and aesthetic. Good design emphasizes the usefulness of a product whilst disregarding anything that could possibly detract from it.
Good design is aesthetic: The aesthetic quality of a product is integral to its usefulness because products we use every day affect our person and our well-being. But only well-executed objects can be beautiful.

Good design makes a product understandable: It clarifies the product’s structure. Better still, it can make the product talk. At best, it is self-explanatory.
Good design is unobtrusive: Products fulfilling a purpose are like tools. They are neither decorative objects nor works of art. Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression.
Good design is honest: It does not make a product more innovative, powerful or valuable than it really is. It does not attempt to manipulate the consumer with promises that cannot be kept.

It’s actually a shelf meant for displaying things like plants, pottery, etc, not for furniture. It was a common feature in houses built from the mid-to-late 1970s through the early 1990s. I always thought it was a really dumb design, especially since it’s hazardous to try to put something there and then try to clean it once you do.
I know what you mean. They build these things all the time but it's still stupid. No sunlight, ya can't water the plants and if it's anything other then plants you can't dust it. It's just stupid & they need to stop building them or people end up doing this hahaaa

We used to have a space just like that in our living room above the couch when I was a kid. When my parents were at work, my sister and I would push the two couches together, cover them with pillows and blankets, and then stupidly stack things up on this chair, so we could climb up onto the wall, and jump off onto the couches. Lol we could have seriously gotten hurt, but it was so much fun!
Not sure what I hate more...this...or the usual gigantic arrangement of dusty fake flowers that these spaces seem to attract.

Most people would just put a decorative item, or a fake plant there, why chairs? Lol.

House is beautiful, like the houses in our gated mc. mansion neighborhood across the road. (I do not live in one) Just hope I will be successful enough to have one too

Whenever I see a home with spaces like this (for displaying s**t, actually) all I can think of is "how much do you have to pay someone to dust that twice a year??"
Good design is thorough down to the last detail: Nothing must be arbitrary or left to chance. Care and accuracy in the design process show respect towards the user.
Good design is environmentally-friendly: Design makes an important contribution to the preservation of the environment. It conserves resources and minimizes physical and visual pollution throughout the lifecycle of the product.
Good design is as little design as possible: Less, but better – because it concentrates on the essential aspects, and the products are not burdened with non-essentials. Back to purity, back to simplicity.
So three you have it, pretty simple right? If you are tasked with designing something and want to avoid the epic fails found in this list, check these principles off first and you should succeed!
If I remember right..some of these bathrooms are set up that as soon as you enter and lock the door to the stall, the walls go opaque so you can't be seen....

I've been in some places where they have a separate hose with its own tap in the bathroom. Not sure if that would have been intended here though.
I mean its inconvenient, but I do kind of like the idea of a tree in the middle of my house. Perhaps a little better displayed though

The toilet needs to be above the septic tank in order for it to drain properly and not back up into the plumbing. So if the ground floor is a sunk in basement, the toilet needs to be elevated.

I became irritated looking at these pics. Absolutely gruesome. Can't imagine having people pay to live in these creepy places . I'd prefer a cave.

Sometimes money is a problem. Fixing an inherited problem can sometimes cost more than just buying a different house.

Why many people build the toilet on the stairs? ^^Or a bathtub like that, I bet all these are in the haunted house lol
If you have a septic tank system the toilet needs to be higher than the tank.

What amazes me is people build this stuff. What were they thinking? Didn't they realize something was wrong at some point?
The toilet needs to be above the septic tank in order for it to drain properly and not back up into the plumbing. So if the ground floor is a sunk in basement, the toilet needs to be elevated.
