The last time Texas was this cold was in 1989. With temperatures falling to below -10C (14F), the state's power grid failed, as it could not cope with the demand for electricity. Rotating power outages have been put in place by the grid operator to reduce the demand, leaving millions of people without electricity.

At least 23 people died in the storm or its aftermath.

Millions of people remained without power on Tuesday and were planning for another cold, dark night in the wake of the deadly storm that swept across the southern and central parts of the United States this week. In many of these places, such devastating conditions arrive just once in a generation.

By late afternoon Tuesday, the storm was making its way into eastern Canada, but the damage left behind was severe. Bored Panda has compiled a list of photos to help you to understand how it has affected the area.

For people wondering why the turtles are not just being left in the sea it's because they're suffering from a form of hypothermia called "cold stunning". According to the NOAA this can be fatal. When they get too cold their metabolic processes slow down, and if it continues their bodies will shut down and they'll die. It also increases the risk of illness, drowning, predation, and being hit by boats while the turtles are just floating there helplessly. The reason they are not moving around in the boat is because they're literally too cold to move. The turtles are being taken to go warm up, recuperate, and be released back into warmer waters. https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/feature-story/cold-snaps-and-stunned-sea-turtles

At least 23 people have died since winter began unleashing its fury last week, some from the cold and some from attempts to escape it. And almost four million customers across the country remained without electricity on Tuesday evening, according to PowerOutage.us, which aggregates live power data from utilities.

More than 3.5 million of those outages were in Texas. There, many people had been without power for hours or even days in freezing temperatures. State leaders, including Gov. Greg Abbott, expressed criticism of the operation of the state's power grid, and the Texas House speaker announced a legislative hearing looking into the widespread power failures.

Experts have begun to analyze what could have been the key factors behind the grid failures in Texas. It looks like record-breaking cold weather spurred residents to crank up their electric heaters and pushed demand for electricity beyond the worst-case scenarios that grid operators had planned for.

Simultaneously, many of the state's gas-fired power plants were knocked offline amid icy conditions, and some plants appeared to suffer fuel shortages as natural gas demand spiked nationwide. Also, many wind turbines in Texas froze and stopped working, although it's worth mentioning that this was a smaller part of the problem.

Some people, however, manage to find some joy during this struggle. Damian Syrianos, who is originally from Sag Harbor, NY, found himself in the middle of the havoc in Texas too, and he found a nice way to make the best out of the whole ordeal—he attached a rope to a car, hopped onto a snowboard, and went on to have some fun on the white streets.

"This is typical for me to do in NY when it snows with friends but not typical in Texas," he told Bored Panda. "I believe the last time they had this much snow was 1986. So I had to take full advantage of it, especially with plenty of experience to back it!"

"The storm hit us pretty hard, for Texas—I've been through much worse with fewer issues. The state not being prepared, shutting off power, and not having any plows to clear the roads so we can go to the grocery store are all huge issues, but I just took advantage of it and went snowboarding."

"So far, I haven't really left my house in 4 days other than to go to the grocery store," Damian added. "But there is a positive note. This is the first time I, an 'essential worker', don't have to go into work since COVID started!"

Coming back to snowboarding, Damian said it was amazing: "There was no one else driving around so no issues, got some sweet turns in and a whole lot of smiles.

Throughout the state, the National Guard has been deployed and 135 public warming centers have opened up to provide people with an escape from the frigid weather, although Covid-19 precautions remain in effect.

In Harris County, which includes the city of Houston, health workers scrambled to distribute Covid-19 vaccines as freezers lost power and backup generators failed. The county had to hurriedly administer 8,500 shots of the Covid-19 Moderna vaccine, which must be stored at temperatures between minus 13 degrees and 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Writing from Pennsylvania where we've done 10 days below freezing with no power in 2011. 1) dress in as many layers as you can, hat, socks and gloves. 2) get all the insulation you can- setup the tent in the master bedroom on the bed, scrounge up as many pillows and cushions as you can to insulate the walls of the tent, and cover the tent with as many fitted sheets, throw-rugs and towels as you can. Setup the tent in the smallest room, with the least windows to limit heat loss. 3) there's warmth in numbers- every person puts out about 100 watts of heat, get as many extended family together as you can for "camping" in the house.

"Most everyone saw temps of 21 degrees for several hours," Murden, who also is a grower, said. "We will no doubt lose some of the crops as we are seeing some ice buildup inside the fruit."

According to Murden, when temperatures dip below 28 degrees and stay below that mark for five hours or longer, the fruit that is still on branches begins to freeze on the inside.

It snowed when I was young, but it's not something I really remember. On Sunday I didn't know snow had a sound and even today as I was "harvesting" it off the car to melt so I had water to put in the toilet tank I still thought the falling snow was pretty. I finally saw a small one when it landed on me while checking an outdoor pipe and really saw it's small intricacies. I would've really enjoyed it a lot more had I had heat and water.

You have probably already figured this out, but get anything you value that can be water damaged to a safe place. When things start thawing you are going to have pretty significant water intrusion, then mold remediation when it warms up. Looks like a mobile home??

Citrus groves in Texas are largely situated in the Lower Rio Grande Valley in parts of Hidalgo, Cameron and Willacy counties, Murden explained. Several groves are located in Mission, a city of about 85,000 that is about 240 miles south of San Antonio, right along the border with Mexico. "Come and enjoy the warm weather," the city writes on its website.

Our independent power grid, ERCOT, has gone down. My ( adult) kids in Austin have no heat, electricity, or gas and are freezing in their apartment. They also have no food because they hardly ever cook, so even though this is partly their own fault for failing to prepare, I'm still super worried about them.

All other sources of heating, gas, etc, depend on electricity to fire it up. A gas fired furnace is no good in a blackout. Now a woodstove would do nicely in this kind of weather.

If you have a gas stove, you can light it with a match if the electric starter doesn't work. I remember times back in Ohio during the winter that we all were in the kitchen, heat from the stove and able to cook.

Public transportation authorities in cities like San Antonio are modifying bus schedules, and in some cases, even pausing them altogether. Jeff Arndt, the chief executive of San Antonio’s transit authority, VIA, told the Guardian that informing riders of the changes to public transportation – like suspending all bus services Sunday evening and operating a weekend bus schedule on weekdays – will be a difficult challenge.

We can handle the logistics of getting people in and making sure the buses are fueled. It’s really getting the information to the customers," Arndt said.

    Luna Starien Rose
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

depends on the land and money but if you don't have a barn many people will have one area of land that will have a dense forest area where the cattle will cluster and hunker down together. Also on food the rancher will break ice in water trophy and feed them either with feed or hay they had stored up. Among that cattle can find roots under snow if you haven't babied them to much where they forget survival instinct. All that combined they will most likely survive. Cattle are to prescious and expensive to loose (speaking as a ranch and farmer daughter)

A little (and important) PSA: While many people think that drinking alcohol will raise your body temperature, this is not true. Alcohol will widen your blood vessels and warmer blood will flow closer to the skin causing you to feel warm, or give you rosy cheeks. HOWEVER, that extra heat passes quickly and will cause your temperature to actually drop. In cold like this, it can cause extreme hypothermia and even lead to death. I know this is very difficult, but please be careful! Stay safe down there! Love, a NYS Certified ServSafe instructor/Bartender of 20 years/Bartending Instructor.

I live in New England. When we bought our first house it didn’t come with a fridge and we couldn’t afford one. Since it was November we just put a couple of coolers on the porch. For three months! Then a neighbor tossed out her old fridge and we scooped it up.

Ahh, yes, the Colorado cooler. Well done.

But nothing in the history of Texas compares to February 12th, 1899.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in the state occurred at Tulia in Swisher County in the extreme southern Texas Panhandle. The thermometer dropped to 23 degrees below zero. However, there were unofficial reports that were even colder. Low temperatures of 30 degrees below zero were measured that night at Wolf Creek and at a site southeast of Perryton, both in Ochiltree County in the northern Panhandle. This cold air spread throughout the state with reports of a thin layer of ice coating most of Galveston Bay.

In fact, many Texas cities established all-time record low temperatures In February 1899.

try driving a car with summer tires up that slippery road. All the little chaos is where cars are parked. Even here in Europe, I see people having problems especially with front-wheel driven cars (yes, NOT back ones - those are not leaving parking spots or treated more carefully).

As long as you have the bbq working - take a couple of clean house-bricks, and a jar of water, and put them in the heat. After you finish eating, the warm water makes hot chocolate and the bricks (handle with gloves, please) come inside to warm up your kitchen. Old Canadian trick.

Another good trick if you have a lot of cast iron and a working oven, heat the cast iron at 400F for about 30-45 minutes, turn off the oven and crack the door open, the hot cast iron will heat the kitchen for quite a long time. I do, however have 8 pieces of cast iron in there.

We were in this storm and had no heat, power, phone service or hot water for about 46 hours. We got our power back on Wednesday along with phone service but still don't have hot water and are under boil orders. I feel so lucky though because we still had gas. Even though its dangerous we used our stove burners for heat so it wasn't too bad for us. I'm especially grateful that my daughter, son in law and granddaughter never lost power. They were always safe. We ate a lot of frozen foods that could be cooked on the stove. Tonight was actually our first real home cooked meal. It was bad y'all and it some it's still bad. Groceries stores are empty and so many don't have ANY water at all.

The fact that they are driving on this unplowed road with summer tires is terrifying enough, let alone walking beside it.... I live in a place that gets snow 40-50 days a year, and even then our roads are clear within hours of a snowfall, and I still wouldn't feel safe without my snow tires.... and yes, I understand that in Texas you won't have snow tires, but then STAY HOME

I lived in Austin back in the 80's and while driving on the highways you had to go around all the vehicles that had been abandoned because Texans aren't familiar with snow on he ground so they'd park their vehicles and get out and walk.

And the horses... the biggest problem I've heard about is accessing water. If horses are eating hay (they need to have 24/7 forage normally, but especially now to keep warm) they also need water, or risk colic (which can be fatal to horses). There are many very worried horse owners reporting that they can't even get to the barn to check water supply

Texan here. Yes the Longhorns are ok. They are very hearty breeds. They can also tolerate the 110+ summers we have sometimes. This isn't a correct pic regarding the name. It's meant to be the official mascot of University of Texas named BEVO and not BEVA. That also not the actual Longhorn. He lives on a private ranch and is pampered like you wouldn't believe.

This longhorn is OK. I think it has thicker fur than most cattle. It's probably just annoyed that some human is taking its picture.

A Texan Panda checking in - we had a storm (not THIS bad) 10 years ago; this DOES happen. ERCOT chose not to winterize its equipment, because that would have mean spending money. Anyone wondering why the grid isn't being repaired: the repair equipment is frozen too.

This Winter Storm System Is Testing Us In Many Ways. Pushing Us To Our Limits. Creating Challenges We Didn’t Expect And Requiring Us To Make Tough Decisions

It’s hard to see the beauty in any of this snow through the pits in our stomachs, shivering animals, no running water, and no power for over 100 hours at the farm. We’ve all been doing our best to keep the eggs warm and the animals fed, but this egg got away.

Here’s the inside of a frozen chicken egg.

It’s times like these we look to our northern farmers and old pioneers for guidance and encouragement. We imagine our forefathers over the last 166 years going through similar conditions never having known the comfort of a lightbulb. We take these as lessons but it’s hard when you’re actually going through it.

We will not be on the roads this week and will not be supplying our beloved club members, markets, and chefs any eggs this week. We wish you all safety and comfort during this difficult storm.

But through it all, the blizzard (96) brought out the best in many people. Quote from ( https://www.syracuse.com/vintage/2016/03/remembering_the_storm_of_the_c.html) Even though Northern states are used to the snow, NOBODY is ever really ready. I've been without power for a week, 10 days, 2 weeks during storms, you make due. Animals are hard hit also. Cows die when you can't milk them, you can't milk a cow without power (or a squadron of people daily) Anyway people....HELP ONE ANOTHER! Look out for the elderly, infirmed, animals...do what you can.

I live in Eastern WA, and we had 29" between last Thursday and Monday. No power outages here, but if there had been then our backup generator would have carried us right through it. The real mystery to me is how and why so many generating stations were knocked off line there. It's not the first time this has happened in TX.

Austin and San Antonio homeless charities are coordinating and helping out where they can. A lot of homeless people are staying outdoors, not because they want to, but because they're terrified of other people, or of catching COVID19, which as raced through the homeless population. And people are freezing indoors, too.

If only the citizens of Texas had elected officials that had the intelligence and wellness to fund infrastructure and enforce regulations that would have prepared for natural disaster events.

Well its not like they can all evacuate in less than a week? Even if they did or got all the supplies, they would still not be used to all that.

We're boiling snow to have clean water for hand washing and a daily sponge bath. This also a good tip for making drinking water. Bring to a boil and let boil for 2 minutes.

I hope the pipes to the sewer are ok.. otherwise.. you will get back what you sent off.. A dry toilet (kitty litter or saw dust for solids, a closed bucket for fluids) would probably be a better idea..

TBF, Gabby, Texans know a thing or two about saving water, but mainly during Tornado and Hurricane season. A block of ice isn't going to be useful to them if their power is out. Melting the snow is more useful in this situation.

If the battery is dead long enough, a camera will lose its time and date. I would surmise this camera has a default "date-not-found" of 1998. I used to have a Sony that would go to 1999 whenever I took the battery out to charge it.

It might be warmer, but if they get another whomping of snow it could cover up all of the air intake vents/chimneys/whatever Texas uses in their storm shelters; If that happens and there are people down there, they risk running out of air.

A Texan’s Guide To Surviving A Once In A Lifetime Snow Storm In The South

A Texan’s Guide To Surviving A Once In A Lifetime Snow Storm In The South

    1) Order sleds and snow gear for your kids as soon as you hear there is even a slight possibility for snow (Amazon basically laughed at me when I tried to order the night before our storm)
    2) When “they” say drip your faucets and open your cabinet doors...listen to “them”! 3) Shovel out an area in the snow for your dog to do their business (check out Jessie in my stories today! Poor baby!).
    4) 3-4 pairs of pants are best when going outside, though you won’t be able to lean over or breathe. And special note: Allow at least 1 full hour to get on all winter gear on before leaving the house.
    5) Be prepared for rolling blackouts and kids who don’t know what to do without phones or internet!
    6) Assume school will be canceled as long as there is any snow on the ground...people be crazy driving on icy Texas roads!

You put some of the snow right in to the water tank of the toilet - then you pee onto it, to speed up melting. And maybe sprinkle salt if that's too slow. The tank water will flush the other part of the toilet, if the drain's not frozen.

All these pictures of frozen fountains.... didn't anyone ever think to turn them off? Before they froze? Ruptured pipes are expensive to fix.

But you have to realize they don't usually see temperatures below 22c this time of year, so -6c is quite extreme

Should have blanked out the license plate - someone with enough skill & determination could find the address & steal that Bronco!

This is why we drain pools and fountains before winter in the Midwest. Freezing water expands and cracks it surroundings. This is gonna be an expensive fix!

Funny thing is that little snow is easy to drive on, even if there is ice underneath..if you are used to it

So heartbreaking. In northern states, that highway would have been closed to traffic.

Some places have 10 inches of snow, 4 million are without power, and even people with homes have indoor temps of 15F. Yes, you're making a joke, but it's not a good one. (I'm in Austin, still have power, and am doubling up with neighbors who don't.)
