That's really sweet and valuable. I don't want to get bashed for what I amabout to say but could somebody please tell me why it's relevant to mention the neighbors race? I don't understand. I don't want to be derogatory in any way.

No worries, I’ll take the downvotes but here is the explanation: OP mentioned it because despite her being black too, she still notices race just like everyone else does. And probably she felt a particular soft spot AND kinship with the old lady next door. Maybe a grandmotherly vibe happening that is only magnified by the fact that they’re both the same race.

When I lived in my first apartment there was an older couple who lived in the next building in the end unit. When I would have to close at work, the sweet elderly man, would sit out on his porch when he knew I'd be coming home so that he could make sure I made it safely into my apartment and to say good night. It was the sweetest thing.

Nah, they probably know each other somewhat. My now 19 year old kitty came to me through a neighbor too. She got two kittens, but she realized it was too much. Especially with a baby at home. But she did know how much I loved cats so I was the first she asked to take in one of them.

I lost my husband and three of my cats in a six month period (the cats had the feline leukemia virus). I was over it all... I swore I wasn't going to adopt any more cats. A few weeks after losing the third cat, I found a very sick, six week old kitten on my way to work. Charlie just turned three years old. He is the sweetest soul, full of rainbows and sunshine. I tell him that he was my gift from the universe. He definitely helped heal my heart! <3

In an earlier interview, Bored Panda learned about the link between happiness and helping others from Vanessa King, the Head of Psychology at ‘Action for Happiness,’ a movement that aims to create a happier and more caring society. A large part of being happy comes from helping others because we’re a social species and evolved to live in groups. Helping each other out and working together is the “social glue” that helps keep all of us together.

This reminds me of when I was young, and listening to music while doing my homework. My hometown home is at the centre of the (small) city, and our windows face the main street, where friends sometimes just sit around hanging together. As I was done with homework and was about to leave the room, I turned the music off. Then I heard from outside: "bring the music back!" I looked over the window to check it up, there were two random guys asking for more music. I found it funny. My brother took over from here, greeted them and put some more music on.

I certainly don't want to hate on it, because I believe it's a beautiful thing to come together like this. I just hope that it doesn't make the couple (feel like) more of a target. I personally would feel quite uneasy if my sexuality was displayed this obvious. As I, in the past have refrained from holding hands, kissing my partner, etc. in public out of fear from repercussions.

We lived right next to a family with a special needs toddler. Mom would bring her outside to eat things like ice cream cones, popsicles, etc. Then (with agreement from all parties) she would let the little girl come over to my 2 foot high doggie fence, that is all you need when your dogs are doxies! My 2 doxies got the "task" of cleaning up little sticky hands. Not sure who loved it more, child, dogs or adults. She was pretty much non-verbal so the day she said "da" at the doggies, both her mother and I cried.

Kindness and altruism don’t require you to be an actual superhero who makes the world a better place in a single swoop. Kindness is most often made up of small steps. And altruism is a habit that you can learn to incorporate into your life bit by bit. Start small because it’s not the size of the deed that matters, it’s the intent.

The humblest among us can leave such a beautiful planet-sized legacy in their wake. This is one of those times. Leaving nothing but love behind him, and fondly remembered as the young lady grows up and beyond, he will provide a lesson in selflessness and absolute kindness each time she opens a gift. And that IS the gift.

Reminds me of a third grade class that learned how to sing Happy Birthday in sign language for the deaf janitor.

If you can believe this, sometimes even the parents of deaf children don't learn sign language. So for the whole neighborhood to do this is just amazing.

There's a comedian (Alex Edelman) who grew up with a Deaf cousin, and his whole family learned to sign. Sometimes during his routines, he'll sign without thinking about it - even when he's holding the mic - because it's just so natural for him.

I am paritally deaf but have never been able to find a class to teach me sign language, always for the normal hearing which does not work when you are partially deaf.

It's odd that you can't find a class for Deaf and partially-Deaf people. It seems that it would be hard to learn to sign from a book.

The flood of emails also brought along a flood of emotions, and I’m sure this situation was like that as well <33

According to King, we shouldn’t stress out about whether or not our kindness is genuine or if we expect something in return at the start. It’s all part of the learning process to grow to expect nothing back. “Maybe at first, you start out doing things to help others only to get attention and praise, but you will find that doing things for others helps you feel good. Once you see the difference you can make in the world and to your own happiness and altruism can grow naturally," she told Bored Panda.

What’s more, King noted that kindness has a ripple effect. People are more likely to be kind when they’ve experienced kindness in return. So a kind neighbor inspires more neighbors to be kind as well.

Several of the categories of people on your list can still be taught better ways if they are approached with compassion. Many transphobes, for instance, have only to meet and talk to a real trans person in their life before they will change their minds. Even white supremacists, *sometimes* have been pulled in by nazi groups who tell them they're loved & treat them like they are special and they fall for it. The only way to pull them back out of it is by doing the same.

I seem to recall this. I can't remember the exact tale but wasn't it a local contractor that turned up to do a job and saw that so much needed doing, so he did his work for free and recruited his contractor mates and neighbours and they all gave their time for free. I'm not sure if there was a just giving set up to pay for the supplies too. Either way, it's a lovely story.

"There’s an important point too here for people on the receiving end of kindness. If they can, it’s, of course, great to say thank you and add the positive impact it has for you e.g., 'Thank you, It’s great to know that someone cares.' That can really boost the glow for the giver and encourage them to give more," King said that thanking someone can encourage them to be kind in the future as well. So a warm thank-you or an offer of a glass of homemade iced tea goes a long way to making your neighborhood a happier, kinder place.

These Young Guys Saved Their Elderly Neighbor Mr. C From A House Fire

These Young Guys Saved Their Elderly Neighbor Mr. C From A House Fire

This is Bridgeton. Mr. ‘C’ has lived here for nearly 50 years, and is well known in his neighborhood. Yesterday, unknown to him while he was watching television, this group saw smoke coming from the roof of his house. Rather than ignore it, they were concerned for their neighbor and alerted him. They got Mr. C out of his house while a neighbor climbed out the window with a fire extinguisher and slowed down a burning exhaust fan that was on fire.

Pregnant woman put soup on the stove to boil, went upstairs & fell asleep, downstairs went up in flames. We all saw the smoke billowing out of the 1st floor & 2 of our neighbors grabbed the carpenter-neighbor's ladder & rescued her from the 2nd story. True heroes!

My Mom was friendly with the owners of an Indian corner cafe`, when it was end of Ramadan, they'd bring along a dish of breyani, also taught her how to prepare chicken masala. Real Ubuntu.

It takes nothing to share, of ourselves and our culture. If we took the time to get know each other, we’d find we have much in common.

When I lived in WV the people that lived up on the mountain had one of these. They called the roads gate 1, gate 2, etc and they had built a big pantry at the beginning of the community where anyone could take or leave as needed. I had never seen this before and thought it was such a kind gesture.

We sort of do that in my apartment complex. Every now and then a box will show up next to the mailboxes with “free” on it. Usually has food, but sometimes there’s books. Usually after two weeks we get a really snotty message from management about leaving “garbage” in common areas.

this was me with our old neighbors 3 legged fat pug dog. She was always just stuck in the back yard on a leash all day. When I knew they weren't home I would hang out with her through the fence. I had to reach through a chain link fence and broken wooden fence to touch her. She was the homeliest and snortiest little thing ever and so starved for attention.

We use to have tourists trying to sled in our yard and we had to stop them because in the summer we use it and there is actually stuff under the snow! They were much less enthusiastic when we said, "Somewhere between those trees in the horseshoe pit the previous owners put in. Watch out for the spikes!" You should really ask before you do this. It's nice she was OK with it but you should ask, kids.

My old neighbour in my old apartment building in Vancouver left flowers outside my door when I complained about him being too noisy at night. We became fast friends, and he would often take me out for dinner, or make dinner for me after we came in from being on the town. Being Italian, he could cook! We lost touch when he moved out of the building, but I remember him so fondly. Wherever you are Serge, I hope you are doing well!

Here's a tip for when your neighbors aren't as gracious as the one in this post. Let's say you've let your neighbor know that you're trying to go to bed at 3am, and that their karaoke-singing next door is keeping you up because the paper-thin walls make it seem like there's not even a barrier between you all. You've already asked them TWICE to call it a night, and they say they will, but don't. The THIRD time, you bang on their door, at which point all the noise in their unit comes to a complete halt. One of them comes to the door and you smile sweetly and ask (cont'd)

    Mo Poppins
    Community Member
4 years ago (edited) Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

(cont'd) for ONE of them...anyone...to come w/ you to your unit, so they could hear what YOU hear. You then address the person holding the karaoke mic to start singing again, once you leave with one of the residents there and close the door. They decide this isn't necessary, and finish their party right then, ending the noise that's been keeping you up, and they never do it again. No one had to raise their voice, and the landlord didn't have to get involved. I don't know why more people w/ noisy neighbors don't try this. Have them come over to your place to hear what YOU hear. Sometimes, they have no idea they're so loud.

Our dog died and my son went to work and his coworkers had left a card they made. It had a hand drawn picture of our pup and the most lovely poem about how loved he was and how much we loved him. I'm moved to tears even thinking about it.

Outdoor kitties have lives and friends their owners don't always know about. I often think of those who my girl must have surely cheered on her daily walkabout, and wish I could tell them that she passed. I have a few feline friendships like this myself. It's a hard thing when the kitty who used to visit daily doesn't come around anymore.

Last week my sister had to have her cat put down. It was devastating for her. The cat was 14 and she had had her all her life. My sister had owned her mother and she kept all her kittens. So Tubby, as this cat was called, was the last of that cat family to pass away. When She was putting her into her car to take her to the vets a group of her neighbours kids came over and asked if they could say goodbye. It made it harder for my sister in a way but it also meant the world to her that other people loved her cat to and would miss her as well.

Aw, that's so sweet. My condolences to your sister for her loss. Furbabies really are part of the family, aren't they? I dogsat my boss' Cavoodle on a number of occasions, and he was just the most adorable little thing. A real little sweetheart. However, he was getting really old and sick was in a lot of pain, so they made the decision to send him "over the rainbow bridge". But they knew that I adored him, so they called me over to their house, and allowed me to play with him for a final time and to say goodbye. I thought it was so kind of them, as they didn't need to do that. I really appreciated it though.

This Mailman Decided To Retire, The Whole Neighborhood Throw Him A Goodbye Party And Raise Money For His Dream Vacation

This Mailman Decided To Retire, The Whole Neighborhood Throw Him A Goodbye Party And Raise Money For His Dream Vacation

Once his very last shift was finally over, the neighborhood had another surprise for Mr. Floyd. 300+ people came to a covered dish block party in his honor. People stood in line all night for hugs and photos. Floyd's known these guys since they were babies. "Now you guys are as tall as I am!". Floyd said tonight’s sendoff was the nicest thing anyone’s ever done for him. His parting words: “Continue to take care of each other, and smile when you think of me.”
He hopes to go to Hawaii one day, so neighbors have launched an official Go Fund Me to help Mr. Floyd realize his dream of visiting Hawaii one day.

You don’t have a regular carrier because nobody bid on the route you live on. Hopefully, when the USPS has a full contingent of carriers (they are very short staffed right now) you will have a regular carrier.

My hubs suffered a medical issue beginning of the year, and has been slowly recovering. The lawn was always his chore. My next door neighbor mowed our lawn for a month (kept beating me to it) while I adjusted to the increase in my own chores. Turns out the neighbors were worried about us as we virtually disappeared for a couple months due to a series of sad events, and figured the lawn was one way they could ease the strain.

There's a hilarous dachshund on Instagram (Bruno and His Big Stick) who carries these GIANT branches in his mouth. It's so funny to see such a little dog carrying big ol' branches around.

Great idea! The kids might not really comprehend the concept of loss and mourning, so helping them burn off some of that youthful energy at a time when their parents might not have enough to chase them around is a huge kindness.

    Mr. Earl’s Neighborhood

    Mr. Earl’s Neighborhood

Tonight our neighbor Earl threw a pizza party for all the people on our block. He is 95 years old and is the sweetest, most caring person I've ever met. Though his wife has passed, and his kids and grandkids are grown, he never stops making an effort to love people. Andrew and I have gone out to dinner with him a number of times, and Earl always tells us he can be our "next door grandpa". I've never had a better neighbor. I hope to be half as giving, caring and amazing as him in my lifetime.

Actually, this would be a mlem. There are even people who say bleps and mlems are for cats, whereas the correct terminology for dogs would be blop and mlom. I think that's bs though.

Once the pandemic is over, see if your neighbor can give you some basic cooking lessons. It takes practice to get it down pat, but it’s always good to know how to cook. With just a few items from your fridge and pantry, you can feed yourself—-and save money too.

Came here for the wholesome content. Unfortunately in the comments many are criticizing the OP's statement that they cannot cook. There are many possible reasons why someone would be unable to cook. People have physical disabilities, learning disabilities, and/or may have lacked a nurturing parental figure who had the time and energy and ability to teach them. Or perhaps by "I can't cook," the person just means they don't feel capable of putting out this type of meal. Let's stick to the wholesome and appreciate this sweet neighbor.

For goodness sakes, learn to cook. You're 28 years old, not 2. If you can navigate your way to Twitter and Instagram, you can navigate your way to recipes and videos on Google and Youtube. I'd be embarrassed to admit I was 28 and had neighbours cooking for me for a whole year, not showing it off on social media.

I read your comment and immediately felt so old I think there's cobwebs on me 😂 the movie has a crazy premise: a town where dancing is banned. However it's inspired by a real story of a town (can't remember the name but it'll be on google), the town was going to hold a dance and discovered something about there being an old outdated law still on the books that forbade dancing 🚫

I leave water in my deck each day. I get squirrels, birds, raccoons, skunks, groundhogs coming by for a drink. Summer heat is hard on wild animals. Leave a bowl of water on your back porch for them.

$10k? Where does she want to go? Don't get me wrong, this is a great idea, but who the heck is paying £10k for a holiday? That $2.5k could send her and a companion anywhere in the world for at least 2 weeks.

I love the whole idea, but 10 grand for a vacation? Seriously? Why do all these crowdfundungs have to be so over the top. 2k would get her a pretty damn fine vacation too. 2k would get me personally 3 vacations at least, more if I don't go to a different continent. Why so much just because other people are paying for it?

Maybe she always wanted to go to a certain place and had to fly? That would cost. Also, if that's the FIRST trip she takes, it's also probably cool to make it something very special. I don't know how gofundme works, but does the money get paid back if people don't reach the goal? If not - even if only 2.000 get raised, that'll still make it possible for one of the trips you mentioned. :-)

Poor child. All "sleep training" does is teach a baby (whose only way to communicate distress is by crying) that it can be distressed but no one will come to comfort him or her. It's a terrible method.

That would have meant so much, leaving icu feels like getting another chance (can't speak for us all but hey). Little things like this are never forgotten ❤

Christmas lights. I'd been admitted for a week during a scary Emergency room visit and then ICU, and it was over Thanksgiving. On the (ten blocks) drive home, some people had their Christmas lights up and on, and it made me feel welcomed home safely. It wasn't anything to do with me, but it felt like it. Despite so many other memories going missing, this is still right at the front, never forgotten.

Mailbox pole had a crack in it, bust wasn't a problem. Until wind pulled it over the other night. "Well that's unfortunate" was my thought when I left for work at 6:30 am.

When I came home for lunch, my good guy neighbor had welded angle iron to it and even spray painted the base. Thanks, neighbor bro!

While I was there the lightbulb was flickering so I offered to replace it, they didn’t have a spare so I nipped home and grabbed one thinking nothing more of it. Just found this on the doorstep.
