So.... the advice is to stay away from people to reduce risk of infection, especially to old people, who are more susceptible and this guy thinks it’s a good idea to sit in a car, with a 79 year old woman and share a joint with her? Yeah, that’s not grand or cute, it’s stupid and selfish.

Laugh at the comments about sharing a joint. At no point in the story is it mentioned that they shared it. Reading comprehension.... some people could use it.

It's worth mentioning that most people with COVID-19 recover. Current estimates suggest that 99% of people infected will beat it. Some people even don't experience any of the symptoms at all. Yes, thousands have died, but the overall death rate is about 1% (or perhaps even lower), far less than MERS (about 34%), SARS (about 11%), or Ebola (90%), though a lot higher than the average seasonal flu (0.1%). Condolences to all the lives lost to this illness, and we should expect many more cases, but if we were to isolate the fatality rates, it could be far worse.

I admit I'm no expert on Norway, but everything I hear about the country seems to be so positive. It seems like a very grown up country where all people are all treated with compassion, dignity and empathy. Nice.

That is a very nice thing to her Louise. In a global perspective we have a well-functioning society and a high level of people's thrust in the government. There are however, always room for improvements, and as in all other countries we have our disagreements and challenges. But I think many countries would benefit from having leaders such as ours.

People against socialism constantly say it's awful to have the government so in control of your life. Then I see things like this with Norway and Sweden...they are some of the most compassionate people in the world. They are not true socialist..it's more of a socialist democracy. The point is, they take care of each other. How is that a bad thing?

Also, scientists have found out how the novel coronavirus breaks into human cells. This will significantly help to develop treatments. It began when researchers revealed the first picture of how the novel coronavirus binds with human respiratory cells to produce more viruses. The scientists in China then solidified the images all the way down to the level of the atoms at the binding points. With this news, understanding how the virus enters cells will significantly aid researchers in finding drugs and vaccines to fight the virus.

A good example of this also comes from China where local medical authorities reported that a drug used in Japan to treat new strains of influenza appeared to be effective in coronavirus patients. Zhang Xinmin, an official at China's science and technology ministry, said favipiravir, developed by a subsidiary of Fujifilm, had produced promising results in clinical trials in Wuhan and Shenzhen involving 340 patients.

Next, humanity's response to future pandemics should improve. "The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed shortcomings in healthcare systems throughout the world that provide an opportunity to improve them," Robert H. Shmerling, MD, wrote in the Harvard Health Blog. "For example, a faster global response, better and quicker distribution of testing kits, and more coordinated and coherent public messaging should be expected the next time around. (No guarantees, of course.)"

The new coronavirus epidemic is a huge problem that's probably only gonna get bigger in the following weeks and months. For those who are infected and those trying to avoid infection, these are definitely tough times. But, as Shmerling put it, "Amid all the doom and gloom, there are some positive stories, positive messages and reasons to remain hopeful."

It's the folks on TV and radio and all their backup folks who keep us informed. It's the fire department, the police officers, and the EMA. It's the governments and bureaucrats who are trying to organize so very many details too numerous to mention. It's the scientists who are working to find a vaccination. It's even Amazon that is hiring 100,000 people to keep up with orders but helping laid off workers at the same time. It's the car companies volunteering to retool factories to manufacture key medical supplies.. Not all folks are front line but where would we be without all these other folks backing them up.

We haven't been lied to. You've misinterpreted information. High risk doesn't mean the virus is 100% lethal to the elderly and those with weak/compromised immune systems. It means they are more susceptible to contracting the illness and have a high chance of dying. So, it is possible for someone at high risk to recover. Ergo, this picture.

Went to HEB (grocery store) this morning 30 minutes before they opened and stood in line for over an hour before getting in. By time I got in all the TP was already sold out. Still saw people with shopping carts half full of TP. I got 4 rolls left and then a few bags of flushable wipes. This is starting to get old.

One way to double your milk (or more) is to buy the homogenised and pour half in the empty carton then add water to your preference. Been doing this a few years now and it makes a HUGE difference.

Yup, similar story here, my landlord, whom I've rented the appartment for 5+ years, called me and told me that if I'm struggling with money, I don't need to pay the rent for the time being if things at work get bad.

Oh dear, I was talking to a fellow dog owner down the park and she was complaining loudly about getting less commission as a property manager if owners lowered rents. "It's not fair, I lost $60k a year after the gfc, and it's only just picked up again in the last few months". I tried explaining that it's not about profits, it's about covering costs over the next few months and it's better to get less than have tenants renting at a lower rate than going into share houses, but she didn't listen. I won't talk to her again!

She sounds like a selfish cow. I'm not sure what it is with people when they make a ton of money, but still are unsatisfied unless they make more. Any cut back in their already enormous wages sends them into a tizzy. I don't overspend on my income..and I plan for such situations like a sudden drop in income due to illness. Maybe she just can't seem to plan her budgets very well.

Banks in The Netherlands are postponing payments (so still rent, but not the rest) to mitigate and postpone the financial shock. And to be honest that's just the smart thing to do. Losing customers at this point will not be helping the economy.

Not a first at all. Not sure if this church is part of the United Church of Canada, but UCC is eminently reasonable, and encourages free thought. Many other churches in the world do the same. I’m a particular fan of Quakers for their emphasis on right questions rather than right answers. 👍

I wish the Orthodox Church in my country would do the same. Yesterday (Sunday, 22nd of March), while the Corona pandemic is in full bloom all across Europe, priests were giving the holy communion to all the (imbecile/idiot/cretin) Christians who went to church (absolute idiots). Just to clarify, the holy communion in Orthodox churches means using a single tiny spoon to give a tiny amount of blessed wine from one single cup. One cup, one spoon, from one mouth to the next. After they drink that wine, the church-goers go kiss a few icons of saints. All the while, doctors, nurses, state authorities bend over backwards to prevent personal contact and enforce social distancing.

Yeah, that’s an ignorant thing to continue doing during a pandemic. Or ever, really, given what we know about disease transmission. Hope they’ll reconsider the practice entirely.

Dogs and cats can get sick with A DIFFERENT TYPE of coronavirus. In dogs and cats it causes gastrointestinal problems, not respiratory problems. The viruses are "related", but ARE DIFFERENT. PETS DO NOT TRANSMIT COVID-19. Obviously, if a person with the virus sneezes on a dog, the animal will carry the virus for a while, as any other surface. BUT PETS DO NOT TRANSMIT CORONAVIRUS.

Other people that are being forgotten again are the homeless. They have no where to quarantine that is not crowded to the max. One guy that I know that's homeless in the area was still standing on a corner with a sign asking for work or help. I gave him $50 and he started crying. I just hope they don't completely lock down everything or these people might starve to death.

Nice gesture, but ... nothing beats having a basic safety net in place for if and when things go haywire. Only a very few lucky ones get to be on the receiving end of such generosity and though it is heartwarming I wonder if that same person would be alright with paying that much more in taxes so that there would have been no need for this tip?

I think we should write lists of "nice businesses" in each city and share it with friends and family. When all this madness finishes, we should all support those shops instead of others that were mean or just did nothing to improve the situation. It's not illegal, because it's not a black list or a boycott; it's just the opposite: a list of decent people.

There was a couple in my store about a week ago, buying a ton of laptop sleeves. They cleared the shelves and the backroom. Out of concern that they might be resellers, I asked why the sudden stocking up... turns out the wife was a teacher and getting these sleeves so they could send the student's laptops home with them to help them with schoolwork. They were doing all of this on their own dime. Any teachers willing to go above and beyond like the one in the image above and the one I speak of deserve high praise and a lot more than the system pays them.

It's not propaganda, the elderly are more susceptible to corona, like they are with influenza, and many other illnesses. It doesn't mean that some won't survive this pandemic. Just like some of the younger victims will sadly die from this.

It's weird that it's nowhere mentioned that China made great progress in beating coronavirus by treating the patients very high doses of Vitamin C . Why doesn't animals get the Virus?Because most animals produce Vitamin C in high amounts of up to 20,000 mg per day compared to human bodyweight. Humans and sub-humans primate lack this ability due a genetic mutation that occurred during their evolution.

I was at a supermarket at 5am to wait for the 6am opening yesterday (Friday 20th March) and has some items to get for my disabled mum and my neighbour. The staff treated me like a criminal when I tried to buy items for my mum and then separately for my neighbour. They are saying to help, I do that and the stores don't have anything in place for this sort of thing in the U.K. The people who are to blame are the selfish hoarders from a few weeks ago who were snatching items up in multiples just for themselves or to sell for profit. I asked the staff how I was meant to do it for my bed ridden elderly neighbours next week as I can only do one trip per day and they told me to order theirs online. To be clear they have nothing and cannot get out and online deliveries aren't for two weeks. It's disgusting.

It was the most soul destroying experience and I just came out in tears. I don't have any other family and all my friends are in London so it's just me trying to hold down work and help my community as much as possible as well as my only family member yet I was spoken to and treated appallingly and left absolutely unable to help. It's so bad here, if you aren't at the door of the supermarkets for 6am, you won't get anything. The first few hours are being reserved for the elderly, vulnerable and carers. It's amazing how many carers are suddenly coming out of the woodwork to strip the shelves bare. If you cannot get what you need in that first visit, you are stuffed. It's awful and makes me despair.

Me too, Magpie. My doctor recently retired and three new doctors I checked with say they no longer treat my disease (severe nerve pain) with opiates, so I had to quit those and am on something much weaker. It is now very difficult to do much of anything. Such is life, I suppose. Good luck to you.

My local grocery store did this too! Two lines dedicated just for elderly customers. When my husband saw a younger man get in that line, he leaned over and said, "this line is only for elderly, you can't be in it." The man looked annoyed but he left. A worker trying to maintain the chaos looked at.my husband and sighed, "thank you, I've been having to say that all day!"

Took Mom To Walmart This Morning To Grab A Few Things And As Usual, The Toilet Paper And Paper Towels Were Nowhere To Be Found

As we were walking to the car, we see this guy stopping some elderly folks and handing them bags of toilet paper.... Out of his trunk. I was blown away because I'm usually expecting the worst in people. He came over to us and asked if we needed some then handed my mom a bag with, I think 5 or 6 rolls. Then he says he didn't want money... He was just out helping the older folks that needed it! That was pretty rad.
    Thank you, toilet paper guy!!

This is would not be necessary if supermarkets would limit the amount a single person can take for the most popular items. The supermarket where I usually shop did that - and guess what, we were able to find everything we needed this week.

It's not the size of the wedding or who witnessed your vows, it depends on how you see yourself with this person from then on. I wouldn't trade my husband for anything. He is my bff, my heart and my soul. Did I mention that we knew each other only 7 weeks before getting married? Funny how that works out. Here's to many happy healthy years in your future!

Supermarket employees usually start 1-2 hours before opening anyway, so the staff wouldn't need to change their hours

No worries, just place the box of books outside for a couple days before sharing. The virus dies on paper and plastic fairly quickly. If you put the books each in a ziplock and folks use gloves, it could still work. Maybe add a note/sign to explain what precautions had been taken and how to be safe. Not a bad idea, just needs some detail added.

The likelihood of catching Covid-19 from a book put outside by a healthy child at home because schools are shut must be nil. Stay safe. Be kind. And keep things in perspective.

Love the idea but this is not a great idea right now. Take a book, replace w/one? That is how you spread a virus throughout the neighborhood.

The virus is spread by droplets. So if you get sneezed on, coughed on, that can infect you. This type of mask WILL stop that. Also by walking through an area where someone has recently coughed / sneezed.

Maybe we should all keep some plastic packaging material at home for cottage production instead of putting it in the recycling bin. It is simple enough to make for most anyone.

Spectrum internet here offered free internet connections to all of the college students who are now forced to take online classes due to the lockdowns. As a tutor for my college, this made me smile as some of my students were fighting getting in before the lockdown due to changing public transit. They have computers at home, but no internet. Now they have a way to finish their classes without having to travel. One messaged me and told me how weird it's gonna be doing his homework in his PJ's.

Wholesomeness In The Midst Of Covid-19

Wholesomeness In The Midst Of Covid-19

I work with an older gentleman who has disabilities. I support him in his home, located in an elderly community, which is obviously the neighborhood to avoid right now. As I was leaving at the end of my shift, these people were dropping off supply bags at each door full of stuff which the older people would need during the quarantine. It wasn't too much in each bag, but they at least gave a roll of toilet paper and some hygiene products. They all had great big smiles and were some of the cheesiest people I've seen in awhile. It really brightened my outlook on this lockdown which central/ northern California is going into and contrasted the selfishness of those who have been over buying and hoarding supplies. That made me feel really good and I want to spread the positivity on.

Please be careful y'all, and take care of each other. God bless
