This is my service dog, Emma, on the night I met her (about a month ago). I am a veteran and she helps me with my PTSD to keep me grounded.

@Melissa Boatman Linebaugh Sending my Sincere Condolences to you & your family! To me it's bitter sweet for my angel hero & his family & bitter sweet for me to because I wouldn't be alive without my angel hero 6 years ago (unknown family until 3 years later) I was essentially then 2 months away from going to heaven myself after struggling to stay alive with kidney disease, dialysis for 6.5 years! Tanner committed suicide in 2014, me-37-kidney & two more gentleman 60-kidney & 70-liver years old received major organs that sad/happy day! Since then me & his family are one family & we too advocate for ; project & other suicide awareness programs! I wish you & your family all the best in 2021 & beyond! Keep advocating!

I believe everyone with PTSD and Depression should be given a service dog. The symbiotic relationship of dog and human benefits them both, and the rest of us too. I have read scholarly, peer-reviewed articles about research on the subject. It has been observed that PTSD patients are able to more easily wean themselves off the cocktail of drugs they’re on once they have the dogs. By symbiotic relationship I mean the dogs not only take care of their people, but their people also have to take care of the dogs—-who need to be fed, groomed, walked, played with, and cuddled—-which gets them out of bed, outside around people, and functioning normally in society, confident that the dog will get them out of harm’s way if they start having a flashback or episode, instead of holed up in bed completely shut down and popping handfuls of prescribed medication (including benzodiazepines and SSRIs).

Besides the hero salute, it's time for the hundreds of neighbors make a petition for them to get a better salary. I know it's not much but most of the times I offer 1 or 2 euros. But I order only like one or twice a month.

The lockdown Covid-chaos has all delivery service workers working at top speed with no rest in sight. I regularly use a local courier company at two different locations and today I dropped off a bag at each office with a small gift for each person working there. It's just something small, no big deal at all, but I wanted to show some appreciation. They so often only hear criticism for everything that goes wrong, including a longer delivery time, but when it works smoothly because they are working a seven-day week, everybody takes it for granted. Be kind, guys, be kind! And a Happy New Year!

Earlier, Bored Panda spoke about the spirit of giving and altruism with priest and psychologist Dr. Fraser Watts, as well as with Vanessa King, the Head of Psychology at ‘Action for Happiness.’

Dr. Watts highlighted that we should put ourselves in the shoes of our loved ones if we ever receive a gift that we’re not entirely satisfied with. Imagining their perspective and what made them choose a particular gift for you will make you appreciate the spirit in which they gave it to you. The effort and love they put into the gift are usually worth far, far more than the physical thing hiding behind the Santa-spangled wrapping paper.

Meanwhile, King, from ‘Action for Happiness,’ explained that we keep ourselves happy by going out of our way to help others. Altruism has an evolutionary basis, too.

My dogs just was died last month. One was 18 years so not unexpected unexpected. Little Ruby was my comfort after that. When she stopped eating, I took her to the vet. She died three days later of pancreas issues. I have not stopped grieving since. I adopted three little chihuahua dogs because they are special needs and have become very fond of them. But, I had Ruby for 10years and I cry over her being gone every day.

It is 2:13 am after New Years Eve. I am on the kitchen floor with my beloved elderly cat who is in kidney failure and quickly started falling apart and now has these little meows of pain. She needs to be put to sleep but with the holiday, our vet isn't open/able. She does better if I'm petting and talking to her...except I keep crying. So computer on one side of me, coffee next to me, this is what I will do until we get a vet appt. I am so sorry for your loss and I feel your pain acutely.

Your brother gave you a gift that was not only timely, it was also actually useful. —-and he didn’t have to wrack his brain figuring out what to give you. Beats the heck out of some random gift you’ll never use, that will just gather dust until you give it to Goodwill.

Since we’re a social species and we live in groups, doing things for each other (and with each other) helps keep our relationships strong and builds trust. Our bodies reward us for being social and helpful. “When we do things for others, it activates the reward center in the brain, so when we give a gift, it feels the same as receiving a gift,” King said to Bored Panda.

What’s more, even tiny altruistic actions, if done every day, can turn into lifetime habits. So if you feel like you haven’t done enough for others this year, fear not—small shifts in your behavior can turn you into a more caring person that your community will adore.

That's a nice sentiment, but I don't think it's realistic. This is not just about knowing how to do it. He is making one of those almost every day, and even at peak efficiency I can't imagine it taking less than 3 or 4 hours. This man has been more or less dedicating his life to making these toys. Sadly, it's almost a guarantee that it will end with him... :(

This is true altruism. Mystery phone call to tell them to look outside. Name of the person who did it still unknown. No social media posting boasting about being their benefactor. Nothing to identify them at all. And no one coming forward. See, when you do kind things you should never expect or seek recognition and praise for it, never boast to the public about it, never come forward. Just do it. That, in itself, should be reward enough. I will bet you anything there are other similar stories to this one—-maybe even in the same neighborhood this person lived in then—-and other families that got the same call and found the same food, presents, boot prints and sleigh marks. And to this day still do not know who their Secret Santa was.

Leave your asshole ex to drown in his bleak, cold misery. It’ll kill him soon enough, and good riddance to bad rubbish when it does. You and your son go on and make every day festive if you want. You made a beautiful Christmas tree, with brightly wrapped presents under it. I bet yours is the warmest, happiest, most festive, and welcoming house on the block; a reflection of you and your son. You go right ahead and keep it that way—-and don’t let the turkeys, like your ex, get and keep you down ever again. Wishing you all the best!

With all due respect for your good intentions, no. They deserve the title lucky, fortunate, even privileged. Your compliments conversely mean that if somebody dies of cancer, they're weak, unmotivated cowards who should be ashamed of themselves. Cancer is a disease, not a competition or even "war". My mother has fought cancer twice, because she dedected it the first time early enough by paying attention to her body (which actually deserves a compliment). Plus she was blessed with good genetics and lives in a country where she has access to very good medical care for free. She also benefited from scientific advancments in the last 20 years. I'm proud of her, but for other reasons.

And unfortunately that's a pretty low rent amount. I lived in a rental for 10 years that started at $888 a month and by the time I moved out and saw it for rent again they were asking $1,400. And it was not a nice place by any stretch of the imagination. The $600 is a insult.

Here in the UK we have had self-employed taxable grants "worth 70-80% of your average monthly trading profits, paid out in a single instalment covering 3 months’ worth of profits, and capped at £7,500 in total". So the most any self-employed person could claim over the three grants we've been offered so far is £22500.- There is one more planned, I believe. As far as I know employed people were paid 80% of their salary in the nation-wide furlough scheme. The US government really should have 'stepped up' and offered a minimum of $6000 to help struggling families and individuals.

It is amazing how dogs keep us going in the face of adversity. As a nurse, you totally rock! Keep going, keep your doggy by your side, and keep thinking you can now return at the end of every shift to a happy and peaceful home, instead of the turmoil you used to. Delivery Driver Got My Son His Own UPS Truck For Christmas. My Kiddo Has Autism And Is Obsessed With Them So This Small Act Meant So Much To Him

Delivery Driver Got My Son His Own UPS Truck For Christmas. My Kiddo Has Autism And Is Obsessed With Them So This Small Act Meant So Much To Him

Back story. My son is in Washington visiting his mothers side and the UPS man had to deliver some packages a couple Fay’s before Christmas. Well my son seeing a UPS truck outside the house wanted to go look at it. The driver actually took the time to talk to him and ask him his name and show him around and asked my sons mom about autism. They talked for a bit and he left. My son super happy because he got to see one up close for a longer period of time. The day before Christmas the UPS man came again but delivery a present with just my sons name on it and not his own and left. He opened it Christmas and found that inside. I don’t have the drivers name but would love to find out. Seriously it made my sons Christmas.

When I was a single parent and all 3 of my kids were young (6 and younger), after Christmas, when Kmart had their after-Christmas sale (back then, Kmart was the only "big box" store except for Sears or Montgomery Ward - neither of which I could afford), I got a 6'clearanced Chrismas tree and some ornaments (plus the ones I had scavenged from my marriage during my divorce) so that way, my kids would ALWAYS have a Christmas tree. I never wanted them to not have one, no matter how poor we were back then! I just recently donated it to Goodwill some 35 years later!

A Homeless Woman Caught Someone Stealing My Bike So I Had Her And Her Son Over For Christmas

A Homeless Woman Caught Someone Stealing My Bike So I Had Her And Her Son Over For Christmas

A couple months ago I came outside and found a homeless woman named Ann on my stoop next to where I park my Vespa. We talked for a bit and I told her that there is a child with special needs in the building and I would appreciate it if she didn't hang out there. She totally understood. Whenever I’d see her on my neighbor’s stoop she says hi. A few nights later when she was asleep on my neighbor's stoop she caught a guy trying to steal my Vespa. She chased the dude off and called the cops.

Ann is a single mother who lost her home to medical debt. Her son has been in foster care while she sleeps on the street so that she can finish her treatment.

So I was surprised last week when she told me they were getting off the streets and into a new apartment. I asked her what I could get her for her unfurnished apartment. She said, "Nothing for me, I just wish I could give my son a real Christmas." I didn't know what to do so I told her, "Have your son write a letter to Santa. I'll make sure he gets it."

I won't be able to see my family this Christmas and I was sad about it. But thinking about this gave me something to smile about. I knew that whatever I got for my family could go well or not. But that if I got the kid anything it would be better than what I knew he'd get (nothing).

He wrote: "Dear santa if u can save mommy and don't let her die I don't want any gifts. That's what I want most. After that I want clothing and food for me and mamma. A scooter, tv, video games for learning, hatchimal, gloves scarf and hat set and mommy to get off her meds and never have to feel sick or sad again."

How could I not get a scooter for the guy whose mom saved mine from getting stolen?

Merry Christmas, Anthony. You'll be able to start the New Year with your mom and help her get better. Santa is furnishing your new apartment. I hope you like Star Wars sheets and don't mind eating mac and cheese a couple nights a week. Thanks for being tough for your mamma. Tough guys ride tough bikes.

What sad circumstances forced this woman to lose her home, and to have her son put into foster care. No one should be in medical debt. This for-profit healthcare is awful and heartless. I'm glad to see that you were able to help them out.

It's so wrong that she had to do this. Be separated from her child. All of this while sick. How is she supposed to get better in that situation with such stress?

"Lost her home on medical debt": here's why you need universal healthcare, America. This is a sentence that would make no sense in Europe. Nobody loses their house on medical bills here.

My comment is going to sound really harsh, but I am going to say it anyway... I am very glad you helped her in the end, but you know, you could have helped her in the beggining too. You may have been kind about it but you made a judgement about her and made her move along without knowing (or apparently caring) what her story was until she had done something for you.

For everyone asking why we (USA) does not have universal healthcare yet, we're trying really hard to get there. If you don't mind taking 50 senators off our hands maybe we can actually get something done here.

It's infuriating that someone can become homeless for the simple fact of getting sick. How you guys can sleep at night? How is you guys mental health knowing that all can change like that. This is not normal. ggrrrrrrr

Usa is great again, since when was it ever great?! The so called biggest nation in the world has no soul, letting its citizens down so cruelly, shame on this selfish money grabbing so called democracy. When the rich do not pay taxes the same percentage as the working class and middle class, it's a hoax of a regime. No one should be left to die on the streets because they can't pay their medical bills and have their child taken away to be put in foster care. This is no better than a communism or the Nazi governments.

I also got a tree this year. I am single, no kids, no pets, stuck in a foreign country because of Covid. As I write this I am home alone for New Year's eve, still enjoying my beautiful tree ❤️.

I love this! I started a tradition of getting my kids each a single ornament every Christmas from the time they were born. By the time they grew up and left home, they had a small "starter kit" of ornaments for their own tree, each with a special memory.

We took our new pup to a park for 30 minutes and played some tug-of-war, and she's been like this for over an hour. Guess she's the right amount of dog for us.

Cyrus is just happy to have a home where she fits and feels right at home. The fact that she’s sleeping so deeply, and not jumping up, immediately awake and in defensive mode, at the slightest noise or movement, is a sign she feels safe, secure, and loved.

Every Christmas, I Have To Buy The Exact Same Toy Truck For My Brother

Every Christmas, I Have To Buy The Exact Same Toy Truck For My Brother

My brother, Max, is 25 years old and mentally about a 5 year old. He's mentally and physically disabled and the only thing he wants for Christmas is a Blue Police Hummer truck, made in 2000.

Part of his Hummer convoy, decorated for their own Thanksgiving parade. All my brother is asking for Christmas is a blue Tonka Hummer truck. Which would be a lot easier if they weren't produced in 2000. And if we hadn't bought every other one on eBay for the last 17 years. He plays with them for hours daily, so a lot of them have broken down and been used for parts over the years.

This specific model has levers on the back to adjust the winch and to move it forwards and backwards. It's also slow enough for him to keep up with.

He hates the rubber tires, so they come off immediately. It needs to have a metal hook. I've tried making him resin cast copies over the years, but he only likes the metal ones. I've tried painting the orange or red ones blue, but he can tell the difference.

It is mission impossible to find one of these trucks, but thanks to the internet Max got his new truck for Christmas!

Honey, if I owned the toy company that made them, I would order a new batch made up to cover the next 50 Christmases for you brother. (Of course, since that’s not one of the usually personality traits of a majority of large company owners, so I guess I’ll never have that much power.)

in 1967, I was 4, and the street in front of our house froze from an ice storm. We lived on a dead end street so the kids were all out sledding on the street, when my mother and another neighbor saw the salt truck go past the top of the street, they knew it made a circle in the subdivision and came down our street last. The two adults took their cars and blocked the street off and stayed and explained to the salt truck guy what was going on. He agreed to skip our street if he they let him have one run on one of the sleds. Great guy and took 3 days for the ice to melt without the salt. Our whole street was for kids, not one household complained

I never sign my cards. Because I always pick out such beautiful and/or funny cards. I always enclose a note telling the person I send the card to how important they are to me and that if they want, they can share the card with someone else. One year was my best friends 60th birthday. I sent her 60 cards. She told me it was the best gift because now she has sixty cards to send to other people. I also bought some of those "pop up" cards and gave those as "birthday" cards as well as Christmas cards. They are so beautiful that two of my friends "displayed" them in their/on their friend shelf. This is a great idea and tradition.

I believe its ear was cut on purpose in order to show that it is a stray. I adopted a cat a year ago and it had the same ear wound. We asked about it and the workers said they clip the ears on strays.

I saved a kitten and smuggled him in to my rooming house, one room domicile. Over the years he ended up with my parents and siblings at home, but he was always my cat. I had named him Hiccups. He was with me through thick and thin. He lived 19 years. The entire family has stories about Hiccups.

In May 2021, I will have been married 20 years. A couple years after getting married, I wanted to upgrade our Christmas stockings. So I searched the stores and internet for possible replacements to our run of the mill common stockings. I discovered feltwork, saw a couple designs I really liked, and ordered the kits around Halloween. They arrived a couple weeks before Thanksgiving. I finished the last one a week before Christmas. They’ve hung on our mantle every year since, and thankfully still look good as new. Same goes for a feltwork Santa in an old fashioned airplane I made the following year, which always hangs over the Christmas tree (they all get packed and stored very very carefully every year).

I'd say more postal workers are like this than not....this year, because so many of us lovingly stayed HOME (and ordered on line) their labors were quadrupled. Tell your postal worker "Thanks!" It means a lot to them. (I know, mine told me)

Betcha there’s no money to go in that will anyhow. My father was like that guy’s mother. Eventually all us kids were cut off on a whim, even though we never did anything to deserve it. My mother died 10 years before he did, so it was just him at the end. He had been a pharmacist for 40+ years before he died, having owned several drug stores in his career, along with working as head of pharmacy at a couple large hospitals. So he had a lot of investments to live off by the time he retired at 65, up in the seven figures. He was also just asshole enough to plan to spend every penny before he died. Since he lived 30+ years past his retirement date, he had plenty of time to burn through it, especially the 10 years after my mother (a really good budgeter) died. And he did. There was nothing but some furniture and a few keepsakes. We divided it up and donated the rest after he was gone—-since his will only mentioned cash (that he no longer had), and said nothing about his possessions (he had sold his house and blown through the profits years before, so was living in a rental).

I think animals retain a sense memory of someone who was very kind to them at some key point in their lives. After that, anyone who acts, feels, looks, sounds, or smells like that person is someone they immediately gravitate toward. One of my rescue cats was a rough tough street cat when we took her in. But, this little toughie just looovves light little kisses on her ears and forehead. But only from me, not my husband. Since she was less than a year old when we took her in, I’ll bet there was a girl or woman in her life back when she was a kitten who would pick her up and delicately kiss her ears and forehead, and when I do that it takes her right back to that time, and her warm memories of that person.

My Grandma, Who Is A Medical Worker, Just Stood Outside In The Pouring Rain And Wind In Just To Have Christmas Eve Dinner With Our Family

This was her choice, not ours. She was feeling sick and she was trying to be cautious. It was a weird experience, and I can't wait for the next time that she can give me a hug. I love my grandma, and my entire family does too. It was unfortunate that things had to work out the way they did, but I am still glad that she was able to find a way to see us.

Celebrate each day, each win, each smile from your baby, keep smiling, allow yourself to cry too, don't get caught up in the why us, trust your strength and repeat. Probably also feels good to live in a house that’s clean and smells good, to have space to stretch out, not to have to worry about bugs, vermin, mold and all other grossness, or whether some asshole is going to come along and metaphorically piss all over your Christmas by being abusive. You’re safe, secure, and sanitary, so sleep deeply and well, and wake up refreshed and happy in the morning. Wishing you all the best, now and in the future!

If you need professional advice or help get help from a good psychologist. After my parents divorced, my dad struggled a bit. One year when I was visiting him for Christmas we didn't have any place for a real tree because he was renting and living in just a room, so he cut one out of wrapping paper and put it on the wall, just so I'd have something. I was just as excited as if it was a real tree.I Did the same thing for myself when I got my first apartment and couldn't afford a tree. So far, that tree he made is still a favorite childhood memory

It's a lovely idea but better suited if she donated to the homeless shelters rather than someone who is doing okay/well.

You can tell who needs the money. I did that for a couple years, when I had extra money. It is easy to see the people who need it most.

Especially when they steal sentimental things, or steal from children, old people, and people who are struggling to make ends meet. Sentimental things can’t be replaced, because the replacement will never be the same as the original—-IF it can be replaced at all. Kids, old folks, and people struggling are the ones who don’t have either insurance or the spare cash to replace their hard-earned belongings, and for whom the loss could be the last straw that tips them over into abject poverty (think about the cost of another car to replace a stolen one). Before you start getting your hackles up, I’m not advocating stealing from the rich. I’m just saying that, even though the sentimental would still be irreplaceable, anything else would be, and they have enough cash to buy another—-if they even notice anything missing in the first place!
