Dipping grilled cheese in syrup, buttering pop-tarts, or devouring strawberries with stems still attached to them may sound utterly asinine, but for some people, it’s a perfectly fine mode of consuming food.
You see, no one is immune to bizarre eating quirks, but most of us are totally unaware that we have them. So when Twitter user @kyry5 asked people “What's a strange food habit you didn't realize was bizarre until way later than you should have?” the thread blew up with 11.7K likes, and the answers, each more baffling than the previous one, came flooding in.
So let's see some of the most entertaining and stomach-turning revelations about food shared in the thread. Do you have a quirky eating habit to share? Hit us in the comment section below!

in mexico is perfectly normal, we call it chilaquiles and is considered a perfect dish for breakfast
I’ve done the same with those tiny leftover bits of potato chips and a heaping spoonful of chip dip.
Take chicken breast and spread Mayo and chili powder ... then sprinkle crushed tortilla chips on top and bake in the oven. Sprinkle cheese on top for last 5 minutes of baking. Serve with sour cream, salsa and guacamole. Delish!
Does anyone else eat the muffin/cupcake and then chew on the wrapper cause it still has some on it? Just me?
I always fold it in half and scrape the extra muffin off with my teeth, feeling like a beast the entire time.
Load More Replies...I hope it also dawned on you that, when you eat a candy bar, you’re supposed to take the wrapper off first. Just checking, because cellophane can get stuck in your throat.
I hated tamales the first time I had one, maybe age 12 or so, and wouldn't touch them again for I don't know how many years...at which point I saw my mother unwrap one. I've never felt quite so stupid in my life
The paper muffin wrapper? How do you no know that is paper? Wow.:(
Depends on what kind of sugar. I don't think mixing granulated sugar into butter makes without milk makes icing.
Load More Replies...As kids cousin taught me to take a cold slice of butter & dip in sugar jar. (No idea where this childhood obesity epidemic is coming from though!)
And here I thought I was the only one taught to do that, lol
Load More Replies...My mom, who recently passed away at the age of 92, had fond childhood memories of spreading butter and brown sugar on bread and calling it a "butterscotch sandwich."
Bored Panda reached out to the thread’s author Kyle who goes by the Twitter handle @kyry5. Kyle said he got the idea for a tweet while he was talking to friends about how insane his diet was when I was younger. “I used to be on the chunkier side and was talking about how much junk I would eat (hot pockets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, toaster strudels for dessert) and how even the junk food was made junkier (enter, the buttered pop tarts!)”
“That got us talking about other weird things we all used to eat, and I figured I’d take to Twitter and hear some others,” Kyle recounted and added that he was totally surprised that his thread blew up so much.
Ah yes the Midwest salad trap. Will it be leafy greens, covered in Mayo, or encased in jello.
I am New Englander. I could not believe my eyes when someone from the Midwest brought that "salad" to our potluck.
All these years I have thought the Eriksen salad was just a bit made up for the show... You're telling me similar abominations actually exist?!?
Load More Replies...Back in the sixties and seventies, that wouldn’t have been considered odd at all. Multiple variations of that kind of “salad” made appearances at every single solitary pot luck back in the day.
Sounds close to ambrosia which I believe is sometimes called a salad.
This is known as a cheese taco. If you do it right, you can add toppings and roll it up before it hardens. Requires practice with your microwave, as it changes depending on wattage, type of cheese etc.
Don't melt cheese on a plate! Fry it in a non-stick pan! That way you get crispy edges and a chewy bottom, or chewy-on-the-outside-soft-on-the-inside if you flip it over.
When you don’t have the time or patience to let the cheese sit out and soften to room temperature—-and no, I do not mean go bad and grow mold, I just mean soften. People who insist on eating cheese ice cold just don’t realize all the flavor that cold can mask.
My wife likes it fried in a no-stick pan, almost burnt, with a little garlic.
We used to toast bagels, and then microwave a slice of cheese on top of it
In India (and probably other places too) it's quite common to put salt on various fruits and in fruit juice.
Yeap and in Cyprus with haloumi cheese!! Both delicious!
Load More Replies...In italy we use to eat cantaloupe with Parma ham (prosciutto) ..the salty taste of ham is perfect with the sweetness of melon!!
Prosciutto and melon is great. Had it in Italian restaurants in the US.
Load More Replies...Salt makes sweet tings sweeter - tastebuds for salty and sweet are neighbors on your tongue./ It really makes sense. Also - chilli powder on watermelon <3
The tastebuds thing isn't true, we have been lied to
Load More Replies...Huh. I have eaten apple with brie for some reason. 100% will eat again.
Load More Replies...There's nothing strange about this. Salt brings out the sweetness and adds just the right touch of savory
When asked about his own food habit which is the buttered Pop-Tarts, Kyle assured us that they’re totally delicious. “You toast the brown sugar cinnamon ones, take a knife and make a delicate slit down the middle (not enough to break it in half) so that the butter can soak in, and let a fat slab of butter melt on it,” he said. “I think I did it once in college and my friends thought it was wild and that’s when I realized the buttered pop tart was not a universal household staple,” Kyle added.
When it comes to odd food habits, Kyle said he loves these quirky little things. “I feel like they always arise so organically. Like I had no idea my food habit was bizarre, nor did my friend who dips hint of lime Tostitos into minced garlic in the jar”
“Once you share it with other folks and realize it’s a little odd, that’s when it gets fun! I think we should all be open to trying each other’s little food combos.”
It is, and its even better for Bowel movements. 😜
Load More Replies...You're not supposed to? :o If you're not supposed to eat the shells, shell the damned beans before you cook them!
Wait, you aren’t supposed to eat it all??? No really I just realised this. My goodness
Many years ago as a gauche teenager I went to a very posh restaurant in London and ordered globe artichoke. I meticulously ate all the leaves but left the heart ( the best bit - but didn't know that at the time!) The waiter very politely asked me if I was sure I had finished and I assured him that 'madam didn't eat the heart'.....!
You'd have to really steam those beans to death to make the shell edible. Does he eat the whole artichoke leaf too?
No, no you won't. A straw only protects your front teeth from direct contact and your esophagus doesn't like that highly concentrated acid on a regular basis either.
Load More Replies...The acetic acid (5%) is not going to hurt you. the pH is around 2.5 while your stomach acids are much more acidic at around 2 pH. And acidic acid has less affinity for Calcium like the phosphoric acid in soda.
Human stomach acid has a pH of around 4. Dog's stomach acid is more like 2-2.5...
Load More Replies...My dad had this thing where he would buy a big bag of Salt & Vinegar chips, pour them into a bowl, and pour vinegar all over them, to the point where they would bend lol, ewwwww
Cottage cheese with pineapple tidbits is pretty good, too : )
Load More Replies...I us d to eat it like this when I was little. It's actually really good
I grew up on cottage cheese and apple butter!!!!
Load More Replies...you can buy cottage cheese with pineapple here in the UK, i don't see a problem with it having apple pieces in too
Eating weird food combos is nothing new. After all, who said you can’t have fish sticks with peanut butter? But unusual eating habits often get much weirder than that. For example, brumotactillophoba is an impressive term that refers to fear of different foods touching each other, and surprisingly, many people have it. Interestingly, this food habit is viewed by food psychologists as a holdover from childhood fussy eating.
There are also people who can be called delayed gratifiers as they tend to separate everything on their plate and put pieces in their mouth in some sequence. Usually, the ones that taste the best are left for the very end. Another very common eating habit is known as fork stacking, which is essentially packing each mouthful with a bit of everything on it. As they eat, people prioritize a perfect final forkful.
I will get lots of hat for this, but mac and cheese is just disgusting.
It's colloquial. In Canada 'mac and Cheese' is often referred to as 'KD' (Kraft Dinner is a popular brand sold in Canada. in the last 20 years the box simply says KD instead of the full Kraft dinner. )
Macaroni and cheese has eggs and is wonderful with amazing texture and taste. Macaroni and cheese cannot come from a box.
In my family, crusts either gave you curly hair (girls) or put hair on your chest (boys)...
It wasn't until my forties that i thought about this and realized,,,, IT'S ALL THE SAME BREAD!
Honestly, if you can't stomach eating the crusts off bread you don't deserve bread, period. I mean, look at all the super primo types of bread out there -- when one describes those breads one common adjective is "crusty" because the crust is the most treasured part of the bread! Just make a floury mush if you can't handle the crust.
Legend here is eating bread crusts helps when you're learning how to whistle.
Duuuude...... *calls home demanding brownies be coming out of the oven the instant I arrive
It's basically a hot chocolate, not weird at all. Add some Bailey's or Kahlua to it. Mmmmm
Especially when they are fresh from the garden. Miam.
Load More Replies...OMG, radishes dipped in a little salt is some SUPERB eating!!!
Load More Replies...This makes sense. I some times make grilled cheese WITH either honey or maple syrup. I highly recommend it! Make a regular grilled cheese and add the honey/maple syrup to the outside and grill for about 30 more seconds. It adds a beautiful sweet crust on the outside!!!
That, I'm going to have to try! You should try putting a bit of sour cream on your Green beans. That is absolutely delicious, even though the combination seems wrong.
yeah, I've seen people through syrup on french toast. I don't like it one bit, but if that's your deal, go for it.
It's what inspired Golden Grahams. Graham crackers were originally sold as a cereal
Load More Replies...The ancestor of—-and inspiration for—-Golden Grahams cereal, perhaps?
No. Not the same thing. Mushed into milk is quite different. Such a different texture experience
Load More Replies...It's just a compact, crunchy version of bread and butter.
Load More Replies...Buttered saltines are divine. Even better are hot buttered french fries. It's the only way I'd eat fries as a kid. JUST TRY IT.
Oh man! I love buttered Club Crackers!!! Especially if they are the whole grain ones!
When it was too hot outside to have the oven going to bake cornbread or biscuits, my mom would make stacks of these to go with chili. Delicious!
My father would never let us buy bologna but we could eat hot dogs. Same stuff.
rice pudding - not weird! i was the only one who liked the skin -- still not weird ...
Skin's the best bit! The rice pudding in little clay cups with nuts and spices that I had in Calcutta is still one of my best food memories from India.
Load More Replies...A common Asian dessert is red beans, rice, coconut milk and sugar. Absolutely delicious!
This is basically rice pudding and it's pretty common, sold in stores even.
My family used to cook pasta in milk and sugar....it's actually really really good!
In Turkey, there is a very known dessert with the same ingredients called Sutlac.
Add some raisins and cinnamon and you basically have a British Christmas meal.
Actually in Greece we have a dessert called rizogalo! It's rice with milk and sugar and you add cinnamon on top and it's really delicious!!
Load More Replies...I'm confused as to how this tastes good. Too much salt and it tastes bitter and burns.
That's odd, why would salt make something taste bitter? Salty and bitter are distinct flavours.
Load More Replies...Positively feral. I'm sure the other diners were charmed by this behaviour.
And then the restaurant thinks it's untouched chips and it gets sent out to another table
me too! i always thought crunchy cereal like americans do in tv shows and movies are hella weird
I don’t get that. Like, I’m American, and I like soggy cereal
Load More Replies...My girlfriend does this. I hate soggy cereal and will only eat it crunchy.
I’m American, but crunchy cereal is just not as good. It’s morning, I don’t want cronch right now
I usually pour myself a huge bowl of cereal. I eat half of it immediately so it's crunchy, and the rest I let it soak up
Ehhh, "supposed" is all about custom. There's nothing wrong with a few strawberry stems. I know people who eat the skin of kiwi fruit. Not my thing but people can do what they want; it's not dangerous.
On an actually ripe strawberry the stem will just come off the strawberry when you pick them.
Yes but if you buy strawberries, they come with the stem because they stay fresh better that way.
Load More Replies...As long as they're clean, it's actually healthier, especially if they're organic.
Nah, not me, I only eat veggies and fruit that are made in the factory. None of that stuff grown in the ground, I mean, my gawd, worms and dirt and stuff. [We really need a sarcasm font.]
Load More Replies...I'm so triggered by all the videos where they cut off like half the strawberry... TWIST the stem off with your goddamn hands, and you're good! No need for stupid tools, no need to remove the core or any of the top, they're perfectly edible.
Why not lol... I eat kiwis with their skin, you can bite into them like a peach
You are supposed to eat it like an apple. I wash mine and then scrub them to get some of the fuzz off.
Load More Replies...Pernod and orange juice was on guy's favorite. Dunno what it tasted like but the color was, well, hard to describe.
Salted lemons are good, and I've been known to eat the peel occasionally. My grandmother used to eat whole lemons while telling me to never, ever do it because it's terrible for your teeth. But sometimes I succumb.
I've spread peanut butter on a photo, and magically it worked! Wow!
Load More Replies...Fishsticks, good. Peanut butter, good! Fishsticks and peanut butter, kinda wanna try it.
My husband loves Miracle Whip and peanut butter sandwiches. I can't watch him make them or eat them.
What's not to like? Mayonnaise good! Banana good! (Just kidding i find it weird)
At least it doesn't have ground beef and peas, hahaha.
Load More Replies...Depending on the amount of Mayo, this could be delicious, especially if you lightly toast the bread.
As many of these sandwiches as I have eaten in my life, I've never had one toasted. Never even considered it! Lol
Load More Replies...My aunt and my sister would butter a slice of bread, pour ketchup on it, fold it in half and eat it. Hey, what ever floated their boats! Then again, my uncle would put ketchup on pancakes.
That's nothing, my faither eats cheese and banana sandwiches(he also puts bananas and grated cheese into cereal😭)
ok, lets take a simple, fun question and insult everyone who doesnt do what you do while using 90s slang.
"ass" is just meant to emphasise the "whole burger" point, as in "my whole effing/bloody/... burger"
*Orders Bacon Cheeseburger And Oreo Cookie Pieces Milkshake From Five Guys*
For some reason adding "ass" to any adjective has become a thing. Makes me cringe every time.
I've seen comments like this on the internet just with all kinds of vegetables, but here in Mexico it's pretty common to put salt on everything, from avocado, to apples, oranges, strawberries, lemon, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, jícamas, etc. Well, not on everything, because if it's a fruit or vegetable that doesn't stick, it's useless to put salt on it, unless you soak it in something like lemon juice or sauce. It's really not that weird, because it doesn't make stuff taste salty, instead, it enhances the flavors. I mean, you don't put a tablespoon of salt, it's just like sprinkle
Yup, that's precisely what my parents did and they were from Mexico. I was considered odd and unusual for not putting salt on my fruit and preferring apples with peanut butter.
Load More Replies...Sounds yummy! Not weird at all. Like this shouldn't even be here.🤷🏻♀️
I put everything bagel seasoning on avocados... and a lot of other stuff!
See that sounds almost unusual and yet we use it in sushi so yummy
Load More Replies...Okay but frozen waffles are really good. Like, still frozen. Can’t change my mind
My kids eat frozen waffles straight from the freezer. I'm learning to live with it
There is such a thing as worm salt - salt, ground dried worms and ground dried chilis and you put it on orange slices. It's a Mexican delicacy.
Over easy or sunny side up. I don't know when or why people started calling them dippy eggs, but it's stupid. I cooked at a restaurant a few years ago that was open every meal. The first time someone came in asking for dippy eggs, we didn't have a clue wtf she was talking about. And she couldn't tell us what they were actually called because she thought that was the real name lol.
It's a regional difference. But it's only sunny side up.
Load More Replies...Oh I love peanut butter with sambal! And the egg makes sense if you’ve had gado gado
Glad to know I'm not the only one who dips random things in drinks sometimes
One of my all-time favorite sandwiches! And try Doritos in cottage cheese sometime instead of Lays - also delicious!
I honestly ate a peanut butter and dill pickle sandwich yesterday. Butter pickles are also a very delicious variant. I stand with you.
I got dared once to eat a mustard and pickle sandwich. It was so good that I made another one.
Crisp (potato chips) sandwich. Plenty of butter, soft white bread. A delicacy
I love peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches!! Have you ever tried Peanut Butter, Miracle Whip and lettuce sandwiches?
This reminds me of Gonzo, and now I kinda want to try this.
Peanut butter and pickles on a ham sandwich is actually delicious. You need to make sure the peanut butter is unsweetened.
Peanut butter and maple syrup is a pretty good combination, sort of like peanut butter and honey. I suppose if you use enough peanut butter and syrup the egg whites become insignificant.
The tater tot thing actually sounds pretty good, kind of like hashbrowns in syrups.
tajin makes everything better. just don't eat a whole lot of it straight at once, that was disgusting, far too salty.
One of the best sandwiches ever on the face of the planet is dark turkey meat with mayo, cranberry sauce, a little onion, and sliced Granny Smith apples on brown toast.
Scrambled eggs with maple syrup. The only way I eat them.
It was in basic training at San Antonio that I realized if you just douse your whole breakfast plate, eggs, bacon, sausage, whatever in syrup it all slides down faster and delicious. I still pour syrup and salt on scrambled eggs
You can dip anything in ketchup. It's not weird.
Celery is just a condiment delivery tool. Like a fork or spoon that you can eat.
Then add peanut butter, delicious.
Load More Replies...Yeah, it's easy to see how that combination was discovered. You're eating BBQ and potatoes, they get slopped together on the plate as you eat and... hey, that's good.
Load More Replies...WHO TF puts fruit with cottage cheese???? I eat it with pepper and chives
Cottage cheese with chopped cucumbers, radishes and green onions must have salt and pepper. Traditional Ukrainian dish.
The black pepper on cottage cheese I understand, but the bacon crumbles on Frosted Flakes is weird...
Its actually really good. Diced peaches, or apple slices or sauce. Yummy
Load More Replies...I eat hot dogs with bbq sauce between the bun and dog topped with pineapple cottage cheese...insanely good
No pineapple cottage cheese, but I’ll have to try the hotdog and bbq sauce
Load More Replies...Try bacon and jelly on bread it is good especially with jalapeño jelly.
When i was a kid we used to have strawberry or raspberry jam on freshly baked Yorkshire puddings. Loved it.
Cooked plain spaghetti noodles, parmesan cheese (in the shake bottle), onion salt and a pinch of Italian seasoning. Mix. Devour. You are welcome :)
Add a little bit of olive oil and you've got yourself a bonafide dish right there. (Garlic too :))
Load More Replies...Yes, some of these sound good, but some of these people need Jesus.
Load More Replies...that's not weird- at least I don't think so. I have those all the time!
