Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.

"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.

"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."

According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.

This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.

"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.

"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.

"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.

"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.

I have epilepsy and was going through an unstable period which lead to me leaving my husband and into my own place. I had just turned 40 and from out of nowhere the day after moving I got a phone call from the local pet charity asking for me to take in an elderly cat who was 18. Came the same day. Later on I was in the kitchen and she had ignored me but then came in and was trying to pull me into the living room and I couldn't understand why. A while later I woke up on the floor. She knew I was about to have a seizure and tried to warn me but I didn't know her. After that when she started to pull at me I'd go directly to lie down on the bed with cushions on the floor and she would hop up on the bed with me. Every single time she was right, seizure was incoming. She passed away from cancer about 2 years later and I miss her so much. I've woken up on the floor many times now and am covered in bruises constantly. Rip Agnes

I am speaking uninformed by fact checking and deep details here, but I believe there are organizations who train animals (dogs in particular) to signal just like Agnes did - maybe you can get one, too? I did a search for these, and found many explorable results under "get trained epilepsy dogs" and "grants for seizure alert dogs" (I had urls here at first but I had the worst time extracting the personal info out of the text so I edited it to be simply the keyterms I was able to get successful results out of by using) much love and compassion to you

Not entirely true. Ever see a commercial featuring a cat? That cat was trained. They are trained to stand, sit, walk to marks, look at a camera or handler. Heck, there is a guy who found a stray kitten and trained the cat to jump onto his shoulder and stay there, turns out, the guy wanted to take his cat bicycling with him…which they now regularly do

I’m actually not surprised at all. For some very strange reason, entirely unknown to me, my cat and I have a strong bond. She will come when she’s called and will follow some requests. (I never consider them commands.) She also sometimes gives ME gentle commands. If I stay up too late, she will come up behind me on the chair, put her paws on my shoulder, and lick my eyes to make them close. If I read my tablet in bed, she will push it out of my hand so that it lands facedown. Then she will resume her position in the window sill. When she came to me, she had already been rehomed three times in her short 14 months of life. The others considered her to be trouble personified. The day she joined me, she cautiously approached me, very gently and gingerly put her paws on my knees, while I carefully looked in any direction but hers. She finally hopped onto my lap, laid her cheek on my chest and looked up at me. I feel as if we have a peer to peer relationship

I am not so sure of this, I think they speak a totally different language. Yes, I have had both dogs and cats my entire life. I love them both, but try this simple experiment. Put food on the floor (toss it there), now point to the food. Most times you will find that the dog will look where you are pointing, while a cat will look at your finger. Neither are smarter, just different languages.

I took care of a feral cat colony. Out of all of the kittens over the years I had one that wasn't to far gone to the feral instinct. She weighed 2.3 lbs so I wasn't able to keep her! I named her Annabelle. I never called her by saying kitty. She answers to her name. She never jumped up on anything and by watching my dog whine to go out, she let out a loud yowlllll! She uses the bathroom and comes back to the door to come in. The yard is fenced and she doesn't go outside the parameters!! I have an awesome lil baby!!!

What studies? I’m a canine behaviorist that trains cats occasionally and training the two animals is very different. Cats are still wild animals. Cats are difficult to study. I’d say that cats understand in the same way many animals other than dogs understand. Dogs actually process sounds the same way we do. Not even monkeys or apes process sound this way. A dog of some breed holds almost every single animal speech record. From largest vocabulary, to expressing complex ideas. The famous labradoodle Bunny has even shown rudimentary understanding of things like the phases of matter! Bunny identifies ice, snow, rain, and the water in her dish as water. There is another dog Chaser, a border collie that more than doubles the primate record for vocabulary with just nouns he knows alone. Chaser has also demonstrated a capacity for complex data inference. Statements like these are extremely misleading. Cats are just like most wild animals.

NOT TRUE ! If your cat is not responsive, then you don't have a close relationship with your cat. If your relationship with your cat is optimal, they will obey commands, and respond to words appropriate to the situation. They should make intense eye contact with you, seek you out, and WANT your attention.I have a PhD. in Psychology, and my dissertation, on cat behavior, was published in an APA Journal.I have never lived without cats, I have 16 cats who all know their name, come running if I call them. compete for my affection, listen to what I say and understand requests such as: Stop, I'm sorry, get down, get out, no, it's OK, get up here, come here, etc. They are attentive, intelligent, and they have a desire to please, like DOGS. They simply are not as emotional as dogs. If your cat has an "attitude", is aloof, doesn't care what you say, your cat is not living up to its potential, and you are not creating a deep relationship, and you AND your cat are "aloof".

Disagree - my cats do obey commands & I don’t have to threaten. I’ve had both of them since they were kittens - I’m a retired nurse & I’m with then constantly. Recent documentary about the mind of a cat shows they can be trained! Not the easiest thing to do but love & dedication prove they are smart & loyal!

It’s been a sad day today. One of my cats ran away, and has been gone for a little while now. Buddist was of thinking though, she only gave us good energy. She never cared to listen to our ‘commands ‘ like “ Jubu, please stop meowing! There’s food in the bowl!” If that made you sad, sorry. Have a great day

I have believed this for as long as I can remember. Cats are very intelligent creatures and they certainly seem to believe they are extremely entitled! Considering these factors their very natures and personalities makes for a creature who does exactly what it wants 24/7 with the exceptions of motivating factors where the cat obliges a command or request because it knows it is going to receive something it wants in return...still the cat is only doing what IT wants to do and if the trade off at any given time is not attractive or interesting enough ( even if it was so earlier the same day or for consecutive episodes or days in a row) the cat will just look bored and do nothing or move away from you...because he simply doesn't want to do what ever it is you want. It's that simple. You don't own him. He is gracing you with his presence. YOU are privileged to have his company at all.As far as trained cats go...I am just not sure. There are exceptions to just about everything right?

Please stop projecting human behavior onto cats and other animals. People are “smug”, cats are not. Cats are maligned by many people because they can’t control them. They chose this photo to make cats look bad. Why is it so hard to be a little more understanding and compassionate toward a little animal who is generally shy, easily frightened and who suffers greatly from human cruelty.

They chose this photo to make cats look bad. Cats are not “smug”-people are. People project negative human behavior onto animals all the time. Try showing some compassion for a shy, easily frightened, small animal who only wants to be loved like any other being.

actually, cats don't speak as much human language as a dog can, but they understand you through body language and tone of voice. At least that's what I know. They do understand you I am just saying they have a different way of understanding us.

DEFINITELY! I live 24/7 (retired) with 2 cats. It is surprising how many words they understand and how their personalities are completely different. One of 'em thinks I exist to serve HIM and the other one, whom I saved as a kitten who was just a bag of bones living on the street does not have that attitude at all. He takes off like a streak of greased lightning at any unexpected loud noise.

My cat listened to my commands. Her name was precious and when I was 10 I found her abandoned outside as a tiny kitten. My mom and I bottle fed her kitty formula and I had her for 12 years. She was my ESA, and during anxiety attacks she’d lay on my chest and purr while nestled in my neck. This past year we found out she was suffering from a few different diseases and had to be put down. I had always promised her one day we’d get an apartment together. My husband, myself, precious, and our newborn intended to move a year ago but we’re delayed due to Covid. She used to lay on the bed while my newborn slept and watch over him. Sadly she was put down shortly before the move. But her ashes sit in a handmade urn and I still see her sometimes. Maybe I was just blessed with a guardian Angel in the shape of a cat.

Our cats more command us. XD Especially when it involves food. If they are acting hungry or worried i say "show me" and they usually lead me to the food dish. A couple times it's been to the gate when it's open (supposed to keep the dogs out).

I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.

At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

The german air field commander said that any pilot who shoots at parachutes will be executed, and Stiegler considered the barely flying plane as parachute. The school I teach at played another school (we're both state/public schools but the other school always acted like they were better than other state schools) and they beat the pants off us using this move set. (I had not taught my chess kids this move set as I wanted them to develop their own strategies.) The next time we played that school, I had taught them the counter to it, so the next time we won. The next season that school suddenly "didn't have time" to play chess matches anymore.
