Another dystopian case told as a feel-good story. Without wishing to diminish the life's work of this undubitably great man - wouldn't it be nice if students could actually go to college without going into debt or someone sacrificing his life earnings for them? Oh, wait - lots of countries got this.
Also some countries will get you in student debt just 10-20k, which is 10-20x less (and way more payable) than the 200k many US universities charge.
Load More Replies...The man has a golden heart but it's sad as f**k that education isn't a right in 'Murica.
That "right" has a price tag - it's called taxes. Countries with affordable higher education have painfully high income taxes. If you don't use the "benefit" why should you have to pay for it in taxes? Prospective students have to know that their selected area of study should enable them to get jobs that are paying well enough to make student loan payments. Otherwise, others who will not partake in the "rewards" should not have to pony up to pay for others.
Load More Replies...Great guy! But ... What a shame, that he had to do this...and not the state/country itself doing it from taxes.Yeah, money for military is the first, because f*****g up lives on the other part of the world is more important, than the own citizens.
He didn't HAVE to do anything, he chose too. Everything in life is a choice that's best not influenced by other people's opinions.
Load More Replies...I absolutely get your point, but I think it’s time we completely stop making statues of anyone
Load More Replies...Just think of all the lives he influenced, the actual recipients, their children, other family members, untold others helped/influenced by the donor’s actions…. Major domino effect of goodness!! Thank you!
Again…. This is not a feel good story… what kind of distopian shitshow system will let a poor worker spend his lifesavings for something the state should take care of… f*****g sad actually
A bit extreme, don't you think. He chose to live his life the way he did and he chose what he want wanted to do with his fortune after he passed away. It's no different then someone leaving everything to someone in their will. I don't hear anybody bitching about people that choose to do nothing except selfish s**t with their inherited earnings and how they're not helping anyone. There is only so much blame one can direct towards another before accountability all comes back on you.
Load More Replies...Now that is a man who created a lot of really good karma for himself.
I read about him just the other day! They call themselves “Dale’s kids” and they’re doctors, lawyers, engineers, therapists - and they meet every year in his honor.
Dale's Kids program pays the tuition of 4 students statewide every year as well. The program started in 2006, a year after Dale passed. He was such a sweetheart!
Load More Replies...Fantastically generous and thoughtful human being! I would challenge those who decide they don't want to be parents to give regularly to a scolorship fund for low income students with good grades. You have saved a lot of money and responsibility for others by not "participating", so help give the planet one more educated human. haha
The fact that he spent 67 years saving all his money and only was able to send 33 students to college says a lot about how much colleges are.
The top of the line medical and law schools here in Iowa do cost a lot, but Dale paid for 8-12 years of college and medical school for a few of the students. Now Dale's Kids is a program that passes the luck onto 4 students every year.
Load More Replies...I know this is not the point of the story, but I would like to know his secret to jeans lasting 67 years!
Noone said he wore the exact same 2 pairs for his entire career, more likely he never owned more then 2.

I don't believe his life wasn't as mundane as the story makes it sound.
Sad that this mans' life was so drab, or so the story makes it sound.
I hope Jeff Bezos and his billionaire buddies read this! How about paying off student debt globally!
He spent 67 years wishing he went to college. Well definitely 47 years. After 20 years of construction with no end in sight he had to know that he made a terrible decision.
There's a special place for all that good he did, amazing selfless person.
The next best thing we can give another human besides love, is a good education.
Now that's somebody that really appreciates education As a language Specialist I congratulate and thank him from the bottom of my heart 💜❤️
Bravo to that!!!!! If everyone thought even a smig like this!!!!!! Wow wouldn’t we all be better for it.
What a wonderful beautiful human being. I wish the world haspre people like him in it We can all learn a lesson from this
Thank you for being a beacon in this world! I sent 3 daughters off to college on full ride scholarships by these same kinds of kindnesses. They all have amazing jobs! & Pay it forward everytime they see an opportunity...
Talk about paying it forward. A totally humble and unselfish man. You make me proud to be human.
Guaranteed entry into the pearly gates of "Heaven", when God is ready to take him home. Wonderful soul.
I'm a born and raised Iowan and have definitely heard this many times growing up. It never gets old!
I believe Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg will interest to make it a movie.
And then there are people like Elon musk who hoard all of their money instead of helping anyone.
There have been several stories like this...folks working away their lives while sending kids to college. Awesome.
I got the chance to meet Mr. Schroeder before he died. He was the most amazing man! He even taught me how to hem denim! Since his passing 7 years ago the Dale's Kids program has continued gifting scholarships to 4 lucky Iowa students every year!!! Great people like him make me proud to live in Des Moines!!
They say Jesus is among us and will come back one day. I believe he already is.
Dale Schroeder. A man I've never met nor even heard of till now has my deepest respect.
That’s a beautiful story. But out of respect him it should say a man, not a guy
then the group of kids created an organization and called themselves "Dale's Kids"
Lived a more meaningful and rewarding life than most people can claim.
I've read this one before! The kids he sent to school formed a group and called their group after his name. I think they try and do good things too but I don't know.
We need more people like this in the world. I find it is often those who know what it’s like to struggle that are the ones that give what they can to those less fortunate WITHOUT the motivation of a tax write-off BUT RATHER out of the kindness and caring in their hearts. Speaking from experience…my small contributions may not make a huge impact on the world, but hopefully an impact on 1 person, 1 family, 1 organization, etc. I try to teach my son that it’s a wild world & sometimes people need a hand, a meal, a dollar, a warm coat, somewhere dry to sleep, etc., & sometimes, when WE don’t have much to spare, a smile, a polite greeting, &/or a wave hello could be a gift to someone that turns their whole day around - & sometimes that is enough. Always pay it forward because you never know when you might be the one who needs a dollar or a smile to turn your day around. The most important lesson is to live a life of kindness & caring, whatever shape that takes in ur life, & always smile :)
At-a-boy, Dale. I sure wish that you were in my life in the early 80's. This would have been the time for me to think about college - but I was to busy paying bills.
Sure hope this was in the 70s or 80's. Because college now is more of curse than a blessing. But what a selfless kind and humble way to live. Let's all hope he was not atoning for something awful. : )
That slavery. They need to pay that man back. Retirement fund. That would have help with his farm up keep.
He'll definitely be one of 147,000 that gets in. What an amazing human being!
I agree with the sentiment, but I personally feel that statues should stop being a thing.
Load More Replies...Still noble, but actually his $3 million estate was donated after his death.
if i were a woman id be honored to bare his children since theres a high chance his behaviour would be inherited
He had a mission to do good in the world, and I think that is the secret to a happy, fulfilling life.
What a wonderful man. He is a blessing. I hope the recepients appreciate what he did for them.
Humanity can be saved thanks to these kind of people please try and be more like them ( talking to you haters, Karen’s, homophobic and transphobic People )

The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’
Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.
"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.

"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."
According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.
Barking Up the Right Tree
Unlikely Families, Unbreakable Bonds
This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.
Buried Truths and Bentleys
"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.
"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.

Justice or Vigilantism?
Forget just letting him off the hook - he deserves a goddamn medal for that.
"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.
Unexpected Crowd Pleasers
Quiz Show Rebel
Surgery Took Everything Out
Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.
"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.
Power of Love and Will
Heartwarming Acts of Kindness
Lifelong Blood Hero
"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.
"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.
Stuffed With Comfort
Everyday Hero, Real Courage
an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”
Twins Reunited by Chance
Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.
"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.

Honesty is the best policy and pay off!!! So thankful for this lady's kindness to help make a change in this mans life. Very wholesome
Slow and Steady Wins Big
"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”

I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.
Brains Over Beauty
At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

The school I teach at played another school (we're both state/public schools but the other school always acted like they were better than other state schools) and they beat the pants off us using this move set. (I had not taught my chess kids this move set as I wanted them to develop their own strategies.) The next time we played that school, I had taught them the counter to it, so the next time we won. The next season that school suddenly "didn't have time" to play chess matches anymore.
