Interestingly, Australia is considered the second driest continent after Antarctica. When you look at the busy Sydney harbor or the impressive skyline of metropolitan Melbourne, it seems almost unbelievable that nearly 40% of the continent is uninhabitable.
The lack of rainfall is one of the main reasons why such a huge amount of its landmass is so desolate. The national precipitation for 2020 was 483.4mm (19 inches). For comparison, even California gets about 563mm (22 inches) of rainfall every year.
This arid, uninhabitable part of Australia lies in the middle of the continent (the Outback), away from the coastline. And this is also the reason why more than 80% of the country’s population lives within 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the coast.

The first documented visit to Australia by a European was in 1606. The Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon landed on the western side of Cape York Peninsula and charted about 300 km (186 miles) of coastline.
There are claims of earlier landings by the Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Arabs, and Romans, but there is little credible documented evidence.

Found a scorpion in my boot once whilst in the military... and wasn't that bothered cause it moved pretty slowly... however, went to put my boots on another time and a shrew come running out of them and went up my leg really fast and i squealed like a pig and nearly shat my pants

Lol this reminds me of the time a spider was in my shoe and I didn't know so I put my foot in screamed because I felt it and threw the shoe across the room ran off came back 3 hours later checking the shoe and it wasn't there I then forced my brother to check the room for it and under my sheet there was the stupid thing.

I lived most of my life in Oklahoma where you should ALWAYS check your shoes for brown recluse spiders and the occasional scorpion. Every fall when I'd put on a sweater or shirt I hadn't worn since last winter, I'd squish my hand up and down around the sleeves and torso to kill any brown recluses before looking inside.

We left Oz when I was quite young, but one of my endearing memories was the morning cockie shoe shake (cockroaches). And the wave of cockies that would pour into our bath when my cousin was finished (she'd splash water down the side of the claw-foot tub and jump out right as the swarm began coming for me!). Probably only 10-20, but everything's bigger when you're a kid, lol. Cockies. Hate 'em still.

I live in Australia. I didn't know we were also the Land of Nope. I like it here. Is that crazy? Hang on. Gotta go. An 8 foot kangaroo just banged her head on the ceiling. Silly bugger... I better make her a sandwich and check her pouch for mail. That's how the postal service is working here in lockdown. Roos are immune to Covid.

It is an incredible place - my now husband and I travelled from UK and went on a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne in 2016. It is an incredible place, and I have many happy memories I treasure. The blue mountains in particular are very special. I kinda hope not too many people go there to help protect it from the idiots who don't respect the rules/ barriers, etc.

I'm not frightened of any animals, but the problem is, in Australia, so many of them are dangerous and you just have no idea which ones, so you view all creatures with a good degree of caution.

Seriously, I've been here 50 years and can count on one hand how many dangerous animals and insects I,'ve come across. Only real freak was one huntsman the size of my hand. Had to drive 10kms before I cut it loose. I was actually paranoid it could find it's way back even then.
