50 Times People Discovered Such Surprising Secondhand Finds, They Just Had To Share Pics Online
Thrift stores, flea markets, and garage sales are basically new versions of ancient archeological sites.
Upon entering them, you never know what you're gonna find and hours later, it's usually one of the two: either you leave empty-handed, asking yourself why spend so much time for nothing, or come across a hidden gem that makes even those disappointing endeavors worth it.
Interestingly, the Facebook group 'Vintage and weird things you have found' has the best of both. Its 185K members regularly share pictures of their most memorable discoveries, and if they don't inspire you to check out your local second-hand store, honestly, I don't know what will.

This isn’t a “second hand find”. This exact picture is featured all over the place in woodworking and craftsmanship articles.
Looks like it's even located where the work was being done. Cool thing to see though.

Chances are, online groups like 'Vintage and weird things you have found' are going to be getting more and more content. As inflation continues driving shoppers to reach deep into their pockets, many are doing what they can to make or save some extra cash. One of those options is second-hand selling and shopping.
"We purchase 200-300 items every single day," Style Encore at Lake Charles, Louisiana, owner Stacey Buller said. An industry that was hurting during the height of the pandemic is now seeing more business with inflation-propelled costs.

"During Covid, it was pretty slow but then within the past couple of months, we've seen our foot traffic get heavier and heavier," Buller explained.
The market for bargains is growing and Buller said women are coming in looking for anything from work to athletic clothes.
"Ladies come in to look for a dress for church or their casual clothing, their athletic, a lot of people are getting back into the gyms."
Found This Unique Table While Thrifting. Very Intricate
Edit: Yes, I am aware that this is a ouija board. Yes, it came home with me. I’m simply an oddity collector. No one is summoning demons in my house.
Funny thing, I'm basically afraid of my own shadow, but I would have no problem having this in my house. I only know these boards from US movies, never seen one in real life and did not grow up knowing/ using/ hearing about them. So, they are just like decoration or some such thing for me.

It has a bit of what looks like glue on the plate and side of cup. But other than that, beautiful! I can’t wait to drink out of it. (I know it probably has lead. I don’t care)
You don't care if you drink from something that might have lead in it?? Wow.
I wonder if they won't care even after they end up with a huge hospital bill
Load More Replies...If it has any chips or cracks lead can leach out, especially with acidic stuff like tea. You can buy lead testing kits for foreign made or vintage products which might have lead glaze and should only be used occasionally, or not at all. Modern decorative items are required to be labelled "not food safe." Anything made in North America since 1971 is lead free, when laws were passed banning lead in ceramics used for food. Even when these gorgeous items were made they were mostly intended for show, not use. Tea can ruin them. I drink tea, not coffee and tea stains horribly. You either have to scour the stains or bleach them which ruins your beautiful China pieces. I wouldn't drink tea from anything so pretty. Anyone who owned this before never drank tea from it, you can bet on that. China cabinet to look at only item.
If it really has lead in it, then probably not. It is a beautiful decoration tough

It's wonderful! I can see why you'd want it. I want one now too!!
My great aunt, Lillian, had one of these in her bedroom. Her house and her "nice" furnishings were a gift from a married man with whom she had an affair. They had a daughter, and the man was very gracious in supporting his paramour and her daughter. Anyhow, the vanity matched a set of drawers, and similar elements were carved into the headboard of a beautiful sleigh bed. The entire "suite" was done in cherry. This is how I remember them. I'm glad you got your vanity - and thanks for stirring up some old memories.
My Grannie had a vanity similar to this. She put her makeup and perfume on here. It always smelled so nice. RIP Grannie, I miss love you and miss you! ❤️ 🙏
My next door neighbor and friend had one. I think it was a little longer though.
I Recently Found 4 Sketches By Norman Bridwell Author Of Clifford The Big Red Dog
They are approximately 30 x 19 inches, they were laminated when I found them. They were given to a school after he did a talk there
Nice! I’ve got hand drawings by Elwy Yost, host of TVO’s Magic Shadows, one of my favourite childhood programs, one my wall that we found at an auction once. I love them.
Three months from now: "Hi how can I help you? I found 4 Sketches By Norman Bridwell...what do you want to do with them? Sell them. Ok I am no expert in 4 Sketches By Norman Bridwell but I will call my expert on 4 Sketches By Norman Bridwell, hang out in the store while I call him....ok, you heard my expert, you wanted 2.500, I will give you 1.250 because I am taking all the risk here".
Inflation price hikes are leaving many customers questioning, why pay full when there are racks and racks of steals and deals at second-hand stores?
"A lot of ladies are coming in to sell for that quick cash, or they're even shopping. All of our prices are 50-90% below retail of the big box stores so they can get a really, really good deal," Buller added.

I Got This For $10!
These were ubiquitous among all my aunts and uncles homes.
We had a yellow one. My little brother sat on it for dinners because we only had four chairs. This in the day of chrome legged chairs and kitchen table.
We had one of these when I was growing up, and I found one at Goodwill 25 years ago. My cat loved to sit on it to hang out nearby when I was in the kitchen. Then in a tragic turn it got left behind when we moved in 2003. I'm still sad about that loss.
I have the exact same one! I found it on the side of the road many years ago. I now have 7 mismatched chair/stepstools as our every day dining chairs
I have the same one it was left in the house I bought. I use it about every day as I am 5' 1" lol. It's solid and awesomely handy!
I would love one, so I could reach the tops of cupboards.

A lot of vintage Pyrex dishes have large amounts of lead paint in them. If you have any you can test them using 3M Lead Check Swabs. Corningware bowls and baking dishes will usually test positive for lead between 15,000 - 100,000 PPM lead.

A Vintage Quilt My Grandmother Made In The 60s
I am currently making one just like it for my sister from our mother's clothes. Mom passed away a couple of years ago. I am making the quilt in this pattern because my grandma made several just like it, but they are too delicate to use anymore. My sister has the one grandma made. It is like the Velveteen Rabbit , used and loved!
I hope you mean the 1860s, because if you are calling the 1960s vintage, I'm going to cry.
Sorry everyone, according to Wikipedia vintage refers to anything between 20 and 99 years old. Some other sources say 40 - 50 years to 99 years. Anything more than 100 years old is officially antique. So I'm vintage, but not yet antique 😊
Load More Replies...I love homemade things like blankets or clothes. Get sentimental because of all the the work and love put in them. And it's a win win if it's made by family or a friend of yours.
The pattern is Grandma’s Flower Garden. Hand appliquéd and hand quilted. I think it’s a lot earlier than the 60s. Most of those fabrics are 1930s.
A Book With A Bullet Hole
Published 1896. This is one of the coolest things I've ever found. Not only is it a trove of lost music and poems, it's well traveled, I found it in a dump of a thrift store in Hollywood, and I'm not the only one who has found it interesting. It has many inscriptions one states it was a gift from some store owner to her writer friend and she got it from TX which had traveled from South Carolina. (See below.) And stranger still? There is a freaking bullet hole in it! (The bullet is gone btw.) But why?! I wish I knew. Was it in someone's pocket? At a saloon? In someone's library? Why the bullet hole? Why?!
Edit: I'm so glad you all find this as interesting and charming as I do! I've added more photos for you all to enjoy! Also turns out there was a Sadiee Gollithan who lived in Nashville around that time. What an odd yet cool name.
Every object has a story behind it, but I bet that book has the most exciting story of them all!
Someone probably set it up to shoot at it. My brother did this once when he was 18 or so. My parents were away. He set up a shooting range in the boonies with my mother's flower arranging books, he thought they were useless and she 'didn't need them' -- he used an air rifle though, and did it for fun. Then he put the books back in their places. He got into so much trouble when my parents saw the books with the holes in.
I feel bad for the guy who had that in his shirt pocket, where he got shot

I Have Been Looking For A House Hippo Since I First Heard The Term In This Group
Today I found her! She’s 3” long, hand painted and vintage. Artists name is signed on bottom- Basil Matthews. There are several articles on House Hippos - I thought they brought good luck. And I’m sticking with the Good Luck theory
I never knew about a house hippo I’ll be sure to look out for one 🥰
How perfect on this date (July 3rd) between Canada Day and the Fourth of July I get to share the glorious Canadian House Hippo! Nutshell version: a TV ad from 1999 introduced the idea of teeny little adorable hippos living in everyone's home. We see him wandering around the house, confusing the other family pets as it goes about its business. Of course it wasn't real, which is the whole point of the ad aimed at kids: don't believe everything you see on TV. A mild hit when it first aired, the internet and especially YouTube brought it a new life a few years ago which led to a new version aimed at social media sites. He's been a busy little hippo for 23 years now, long may he reign! Great article and the original video here: https://canadaehx.com/2021/10/24/the-house-hippo/

$5 Flea Market Find Near Taylor, Mi, It's So Fabulous I Had To Have It!
Before ATT broke up, consumers couldn't outright own a phone; you either rented one or purchased the housing (but the guts still belonged to the phone company). And there was an extra fee for each phone on your line.
Do you know the year that US consumers could buy phones? Tried to Google it with no luck. It was a big deal to me when we got our first extension, then I didn't have to talk to my friends in the kitchen, where anyone could listen to my half of the conversation.

I purchased, or should I say convinced my mom to purchase these whimsical earrings for me in the early nineties. They are polymer clay and marionette.
I really love these! They're oddly sinister but cute at the same time!
I love this style of earring! If you check out Etsy, there's a lot of artists who still do this kind of stuff. I was earring obsessed in the 90's, had a lot of wild and crazy ones. There used to be a shop in our local mall back then, owned and run by an Asian couple. I have NO idea where they found their suppliers but their stock was the BEST. I actually cried when they wen out of business. Despite being so unique, they just couldn't compete anymore with places like Claires, etc.

A Royal Worcester Egg Coddler
I think (??) 1931-1950s, according to the stamp. My mom received this as a gift from a neighbour years ago. It was was a wedding gift and my mom thinks they may have been married in the 40s or 50s. She was going to sell it in a garage sale but I thought it was cool so I took it home. It even has the instructions.
You wrap your arms around it, and make little cooing sounds...
Load More Replies...Resultant egg is similar to a boiled egg . . . . . but subtly different. Definitely worth a try (you'll need some experiments with regards to egg size, timings, egg softness etc.) but the results will be rewarding. You could consider adding some extra little titbits - e.g. bacon (previously cooked), ham, cheese, onions . . . . . your imagination is the only limitation.
I don't believe in coddling eggs. They get very uppity, and then you must beat them.
I can never hear the word coddled and not think of Ned Flanders, "What is it about boys and their coddled eggs?" https://www.cartooncuisine.com/the-simpsons/stolen-flanders-eggs/
The Bracelet Is To Die For
It looks like a vintage Hattie Carnegie brand. Very collectable.

How Old Would You Say This Is?
Yeah - I’m betting on the 80’s because of the color. Also, is she in some sort of void taking the picture?

$42 It Did Not Come Home With Me
My mom had these kitchen cannisters in the late 70's. They were very cute. They also came with a few matching accessories like a spoon rest, salt and pepper shakers, napkin holder, etc. RIP mom, I love you and miss you! ❤️
Nice to see these getting some love in the comments. All I could imagine was the sheer shock of seeing all those faces grinning at me from my kitchen counters! They don't glow-in-the-dark, do they? *shudder*

Found These At A Yard Sale Today. Was Told They Were Made For Disney. Any Info Would Be Helpful. Any Idea Of Value?
This is just thoughts based on what I've picked up from Antiques Roadshow... but you're going to have to do some research and examine them more closely, even assuming your information was good. I would try to find any kind of maker's mark or label on them as a first step. Questions I would try to answer: What were they actually for? Were they intended as decoration of some sort at one of the parks? Are they some kind of design model for animated films? (Off the top of my head, Kung Fu Panda and Frozen spring to mind, but that's total speculation.) How many of them would have been made? If there were hundreds, your value is likely to be less than if there were, like, three. Can you find any kind of documentation? There's boatloads of Disney collectors out there, but it would likely be tough to sell them without some sort of evidence that they were made for Disney, and that would hurt the value a lot.
Looks like the figures and animatronics in the Prirates of the Caribbean ride. Sometimes specialty items that are created for a specific purpose will not have any makers marks. It's best to get more information from the individual who sold the items and trace back. Sometime written documentation of how you came into these items (the story behind it) can increase the value!

We Found This Cool Wrought Iron Piece Today And I’m Trying To Figure Out What It May Have Been From.
Either way I love it.
I’m thinking of painting it yellow, orange and red to represent the sun and hanging it somewhere on our porch. What other ideas do you all have for it? It’s pretty heavy..weighs about 15 pounds.
I'm going to leave you this link so you can read about it and then decide what you want to do with it. It is a sacred symbol stolen from the Zia people by the colonizers. This was at a time that Native Americans weren't even seen as people. It's an important read. Creepy Doll Hanging From A Noose That My Mom Hung In Her Roommates Closet When She Was Mad At Him
Decapitate it and cut out it's heart. Burn those to ash and dump the ashes into 2 different bodies if freely moving water. Burn the body to ash and bury it, then salt the ground. We don't want that SOB to gain power or rise again!
All Saint Axle… Yes He Came Home With Me!
Holy c**p! That is totally awesome. I would buy that in a heartbeat. Guns and Roses was my absolute favorite band growing up. My parents refused to let me go to see them when they were touring with Metallica. I did go many many many years later when it was just Axel with 'new' band mates. One was Buckethead, no idea about the rest.
Burn it for him, he's in the hospital in Nashville right now

Smarties Bowl. Did Not Come Home With Me
In Canada we call these Rockets, and smarties are chocolate covered candies, like mm
I have one of these.. You can fill it with anything you want. I've always meant to fill mine with M&M's - a single color in each compartment. Dried flowers look nice too.
I love smarties & I hate this bowl!It would drive me crazy seeing that many smarties & not being able to eat them lol 😂
I had that bowl. It comes apart and you can fill it with seasonal items. I filled it once and it was such a pain I never used it again.

She’s about 4-5” and has a pocket under her chin that has a marble built into it to slide a tea towel into it and hold it there. Easily able to change out towels. It screws onto the wall near my kitchen sink!
Also, nightmare fuel. You know that feeling when you can see someone out of the corner of your eye?
‘Great Set Of Legs You Got There!’
I found these legs at a swap meet a few years ago in Conway Arkansas. They are light weight, sort of a papier-mâché over styrofoam. (see side view photo)
Other than a great conversation piece, I have no idea what they were originally created for, do you?
Put these in your flowerbed up against the house. As if your house landed on it.

$5 Flea Market Find Near Taylor, Mi, It's So Fabulous I Had To Have It!
Any goth kids on here may appreciate the fact that I found (and purchased) a pair of Demonia 5" heals for $10 at Goodwill some years back. They're such a dark shade of purple that they're almost black. I seldom wear them since I don't wear heals much anyway, but they are mine forever! For those that don't know, Demonia is EXPENSIVE. The heals I found probably originally cost somewhere around $150-$200.
Wow, talk about a score! I was goth way back in the late 80’s early 90’s and I would have died to have those! Would have gone great with a lot of my weird Victorian fashions. Lol
Load More Replies...Some real treasures. I dont go thrifting, agoraphobic and immuno-compromised, but I love beautiful old things. This was a very enjoyable browse. Thumbs up. 👍
I love thrifting more than life itself. I like quirky vintage antique things but I also like really nice clothes without having to pay for them. Best value finds recently were a currently retailing at $600 Arcteryx coat for $50, a genuine Tory Burch tote for $6 and an Acubra hat in a pile of junk on the side of the road that fits me perfectly.
Right? Like when I found two brand new Ralph Lauren polos for $12.50 or a brand new Columbia coat for $10!! I also got a really nice Kitchen Aid crock pot for $6. And that was half off. The clerk was bummed cause he wanted to buy it and was hoping someone wouldn't see it. SUCKAH!!

This weekend, Our Lady of Fatima big flea market, it's a tradition in my area. They had their last donation day on Saturday before the sale and I got to look at what they have so far and I'm telling you that place is packed!!! This article is getting me excited this event.
One man's trash...I was once strolling down the street when someone threw out 2 Eames Era bubble lamps. They were yellowed (as most vintage ones are) but otherwise in perfect condition. They cleaned up nicely with a magic eraser and some vinegar. Best find to date!
