Time keeps marching on, and we're powerless to stop it. However, people have been doing a good job of capturing fleeting moments through photographs, allowing us to relive memorable events or experience ones we might have missed.

The Instagram account 'New Old Photos' is a great example of this. From auto mechanics in the 1920s to a Dutch open-air school in the 1950s, it shares interesting pictures that transport us to bygone eras and build a connection to the past.

Talking to Bored Panda about historical pictures, professor, writer, and amateur homesteader Joshua Wilkey said "I think photography can be an essential and powerful tool for understanding history, but I [also] think it is also necessary to view all photographs with a critical eye."

"While we might be accustomed to skepticism of photos in the age of Photoshop, photo editing isn't the only thing that should give us pause."

The historian provided a few very helpful questions we can ask ourselves when analyzing such images. The first one: is the photo lacking context? Or what is happening outside of the frame?

"There's always the chance that the viewer is seeing an intentionally skewed perspective," Wilkey highlighted. "A picture might be worth a thousand words, but sometimes it takes a thousand words to explain the context of a single photo.

As avid Bored Panda readers probably know, pictures can be very strange without context.

In The 1800s , Pit Bulls Were Often Called "Nanny Dogs" Because Of The Protective Behavior They Exhibit Around Children

Pitbulls are great. Even though many people believe that the dogs are hellacious fighters, however in the 19th century these little pups were believed to be the perfect babysitters because of how clingy they get when they’re around children. Not only are the dogs protective over the children in their charge, but they’re very loyal and stable if they’re raised well.

“Nanny dogs” were placed with children once they were old enough to be comfortable around dogs, which had to be great for any victorian boy or girl, who doesn’t want a dog? The two dogs in this photo look like good boys, they deserve a treat.

Problem is idiot criminals have kept breeding them to be more aggressive to use in dogfighting or to have a "macho" dog. So nowadays there are some Pitbulls that are to unstable to even train properly

You should do some research before you continue to spread uninformed opinions online. Look into what happened to the dogs that were rescued from Michael Vick and get back to us. These dogs are able to be used for fighting specifically because their inherent loyalty is abused. Those "unstable" pitbulls you are taking about are just more examples of abused and poorly raised dogs that not only have to overcome the trauma of years of abuse to have a normal life, but stigma and bigotry from folks like you. Shame on you.

The problem isn't them being aggressive it's just that if they DO bite they will cause a lot of damage. The most aggressive dog I can think of is the Chihuahua, but if they were to bite it would be relatively harmless..

Breeding does affect temperament. Not all pits are bad. But many were bred for dog fighting by irresponsible owners. Responsible breeders don't breed aggressive animals. But not everyone is responsible.

Same description talks about how sweet their are AND how protective they are. If they protect your kid that's sweet. If they do so by maiming the neighbor kid who shoved your kid and sends him to the ER - not so sweet. I don't hate pitbulls. A relative had one and it was pretty sweet. But they are very strong for their size so when one DOES attack it is difficult to hold them back. TLDR: You can't bang on about how protective a breed is and pretend it never "protects"

I have one, and you hit the nail on the head. It can be a great dog, but you also have to be realistic about the dog you have. It’s not a golden retriever, so when it plays or protects a pitbull can do a ton of damage. My girls jaw and neck are incredibly strong, and I would not want to be on her protective end. She protects my wife and kids, and my wife won’t walk her anymore because she can’t control her when she decides there’s a threat.

Calling pits of any breed nanny dogs only encourages bad owners. The ones that will say "my kids can do anything to our pit and he(she) is just fine." No dog can take everything kids dish out. Pits just have a response that can be much worse than most.

There is nothing worse about a pit bull attack, it is just like any other large dog attack. GSD and Rottweilers actually have stronger bite force than a Pit. Also, Pit Bulls absolutely CANNOT lock their jaws (another random pile of BS about Pits). Part of training a dog is also training the human. Notice how the OP said "'nanny dogs' were placed with children once they were old enough to be comfortable around dogs"

My pit/lab mix Boone, will be 6 this year, adores children! He always gets so happy when we’re out walking and a child stops to pet him. When I babysit my friend’s son, he loves to sit and watch him. Boone is the sweetest, happiest boy who has never met a stranger. It’s a shame they still get such a bad reputation due to irresponsible breeders/owners.

We had a pitbull named Dreyfus. He was the most gentle dog. We were at the lake one summer and my niece (2/3yrs old) was wading in the very shallow water and my dog walked up and down that dock and wouldn't take his eyes off of her. She fell onto her bum (not deep water!) and he launched into the water to her immediately. It was amazing to watch, really. RIP Dreyfus.

Totally depends on the dog. My nanny has a little white fluffy dog. Has been raised with nothing but kindness. It is an absolute nervous wreck and super aggressive. That's the breeding. Not how they raised it. My dog is super sweet and chill. She was rescued from the streets of Tijuana. I don't know her life. Maybe every person she ever met was super awesome to her. But her natural temperament is just very kind and loving. Genetics do matter.

FLAG ON THE PLAY!!! "Pit bulls" are not a breed. They are dogs bred for horrific animal fighting shows. Staffordshire terriers are a breed of dog often used as such, and hence these dogs are often referred to as "pit bulls." They have certain traits that make them good for guarding people, such as tenacity and loyalty. (Retrievers are wonderful dogs, but will head straight for any van marked, "free belly rubs.") Even these same traits can make them a danger to others. It's great to have a dog that will fight to the death when he's defending you from home intruders; it's not so great when the old lady next door wanders into the wrong home.

They were never used as "nanny dogs". This is a huge myth that has been debunked. It is well known pit bulls were bread to "bait" bulls. I.E. bring them down in a pit. The "nanny dog" LIE needs to be nipped in the bud. Anyone who leaves their children in the care of a dog does not need to be raising kids. This is the kind of propaganda that low-IQ people read and believe. It will get kids killed.

So are they DNA testing all dogs who bite now? "Pitbull" is not a specific breed, but a combination of many breeds / mixes lumped into a group of dogs that are somewhat similar in appearance. There can be dogs that are - DNA-wise - maybe only 10% APBT... or Am. Bully... or Am Staff... or Dogo Argentino... or Am. Bulldog... or Cane Corso... etc... mixed with 90% lab (or even maybe just a mutt mixed with 5 other breeds)... and if the dog even somewhat "looks" like what people *think* a pitbull looks like (and - many times - even when it doesn't look like one), then it gets called a "pitbull" when it bites someone. So, of course, unverified data based on human opinions (and not actual facts) can be swung any way you want to swing it. I, personally, am bothered by the fact that society has picked the name "pitbull" to generalize all of these dogs under... APBT is the only true "Pit Bull" and APBTs are truly wonderful dogs.

So let me get this straight. This dog has the most attacks on humans per year, worldwide. ALL of them are due to "bad training," right? What about all the other similar sized dogs that don't come close to their number of attacks? Aren't they being raised poorly too? No, this dog is just inherently vicious, on average. I've seen it in PB pups that haven't been trained by anyone yet. Keep one around kids and you're rolling dice.

Inherently vicious? Oh please! I took my two APBTs to a dog beach and as I walked them both on leashes through the parking lot toward the beach, some a*****e's unleashed mix (a weird cross that looked maybe JRT / Corgi / chihuahua) aggressively ran up to my 70 lb male and bit him in the face. You know what my dog did? Spin in circles to try to get it off. Once off, he stayed as far away from it as he could. My dog is confident and will strut around like he's on top of the world, but he sure does shy away from violence. His sister didn't try to get after the evil little gremlin that attacked her brother either. They both know that mom runs the show... and - trust me - I had a lot to say to those owners. Had my dogs actually defended themselves against the dog's attack, society surely would have blamed "the pitbulls." 🙄

The second question: is the photo representative? In other words, can the photo indicate something bigger than itself?

"For example, the internet has, for years, made fun of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un for marveling at seemingly cool but likely fake things like modern and well-stocked grocery stores," Wilkey added. "These photos are meant to be representative images portraying for Kim's people and for foreigners that North Korea is a modern and well-nourished society. [But] the reality is a bit different."

Aerial View Of Over 400,000 People At Woodstock , 1969

The Woodstock Music Festival began on August 15, 1969, as half a million people waited on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York, for the three-day music festival to start. Billed as “An Aquarian Experience: 3 Days of Peace and Music,” the epic event would later be known simply as Woodstock and become synonymous with the counterculture movement of the 1960s. Woodstock was a success, but the massive concert didn’t come off without a hitch: Last-minute venue changes, bad weather and the hordes of attendees caused major headaches. Still, despite—or because of—a lot of sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll and rain, Woodstock was a peaceful celebration and earned its hallowed place in pop culture history

They skipped over the reel to reel tape player/recorder. And you could listen to music for the 10 minutes it would take that tube TV to really get cranking.

Clearly a Dutch vehicle but I don't know if this picture was taken in the Netherlands. The letters HX means this car came from the province South-Holland. Seeing those house up high this could be along the coast upon the dunes. Then again maybe its someone on a winter holiday abroad but that was a pretty luxury just after the war. Edit. Found it! You can see Retaurant Seinpost. This was in the coastal town of Scheveningen near The Hague. It was a real shame the city tore this 1886 building down in 1976. The neighboring kürhaus almost met the same fate but this was prevented due to public outcry who said enough is enough.
