Tough. Challenging. Unrelenting. This is what this year has been like for us. But 2020 is coming to an end. Finally! It’s no wonder that some of us are feeling anxious, stressed out, and just… tired from everything that’s happened so far. Fortunately, life isn’t just doom and gloom.

People being the best they can be and doing wholesome things for others are the main reasons to keep going. We wanted to pick your spirits up for the holiday season and to show you the bright side of life, so the Bored Panda team lovingly handcrafted you this list. Remember to upvote the most uplifting stories, dear Pandas. When you’re done boosting your mood, we’d absolutely adore hearing what wholesome things you and your loved ones have been up to this year. So drop us a line or two in the comment section—we can’t wait to hear from you! Meanwhile, let’s get into why giving is good for everyone and why thinking that people are inherently selfish might just be wrong.

Bored Panda wanted to learn more about the relationship between helping others and happiness, so we reached out to 'Action for Happiness,' a movement dedicated to creating a happier and more caring society. The movement's patron is none other than the Dalai Lama. Vanessa King, the Head of Psychology at 'Action for Happiness,' told Bored Panda that doing things for others is a key part of keeping ourselves happy. "If you think about it human beings are social species, we evolved to live in groups so working together and doing things to help each other is the social glue that keeps us together." Read on for King's detailed insights about altruism, the spirit of giving, and happiness.

No. It is truly awful that a person is routinely treated like dirt by most people. It is, however, inspirational that at least one person not only saw it happening but also decided to act on it.

As a kid there was a janitor at my school named Memphis. He was so so sweet. He gave me a stuffed little bear one day, my grandmother who was a true bigot threw it away immediately. My dad left us when I was 9 months old and Memphis was an awesome father figure. Always asked if my homework was done, if I was sad he'd cheer me up, he had a great sense of humor. He was black I was white but he taught me at a very early age its what's inside that is important. I continued to be friends with him all 8 years I was at that school in spite of my grandmother, I loved my grandmom too, but I would never trade what my janitor gave me for anything. He made me a better person.

Thank you for sharing this, Meredith. I am certain that many of us have some person around us that has more need for a kind word and quite simply to be seen than we can imagine. We should all strive to be more like your friend and role model Memphis. Try to get in touch with him. He would no doubt love to hear how you remember him!

King, the Head of Psychology at 'Action for Happiness' and the author of '10 Keys to Happier Living,' pointed out that children as young as 2 years old have been seen sharing which just goes to show that we're hardwired for cooperation. "Participating in group activities and community events makes us happier too. When we do things for others it activates the reward center in the brain, so when we give a gift it feels the same as receiving a gift," King told Bored Panda.

However, we know that life isn't always simple. Life can hit us hard and bump us into survival mode which can make helping others a tad harder than it needs to be. Fortunately, King had some great news for us—there are lots of small ways that we can do in our daily lives to become more altruistic. And really is quite simple. All we need is a bit of willpower and a dash of courage to go beyond our comfort zones and routines.

"At Action for Happiness, we provide daily actions and advice on small changes you can take each day to start bringing more kindness into your life. Small daily actions one at a time can help us to make altruism a lifetime habit. You could start out small by deciding you are going to smile at everyone you meet or pay three people a compliment today."

She continued: "You can give money to charity, donate to a food bank, or volunteer your time over Christmas. You can leave a food package or a note for an elderly neighbor. All of these actions help others and boost your own happiness and if we are happier, research shows we are even more likely to help others. Our January action calendar has ideas and inspiration for each day of the month to get you started in 2021."

However, what about people who feel like they only care about helping others to the extent that they're rewarded for their efforts? We were incredibly curious to figure out how to move from concentrated self-interest to genuine kindness. King stressed that it's alright to "fake it 'till you make it" and not to worry too much.

"Maybe at first, you start out doing things to help others only to get attention and praise, but you will find that doing things for others helps you feel good and when you see people’s responses. Once you see the difference you can make in the world and to your own happiness and altruism can grow naturally," she said.

I grew up with a boy whose lower jaw was underdeveloped. When he closed his mouth, it was an inch shorter, so he had no frontal bite. When he ate he had to keep his fingers in front of his mouth to push the food back to his molars. His jaw was broken six times and extended a little each time until he had a bite. His chin and lower lip were rebuilt. by high school, there was no evidence he wasn't just a good looking guy, but his level of empathy for anyone with struggles still touches my heart today. He was so popular, he changed how young people in our little town treated anyone who was different than average.

King added that kindness has a ripple effect because people are more likely to be kind when they experience kindness themselves. So being nice and spreading the spirit of giving can have a tangible effect not only on your local community but also on the world. There's a practical aspect, too: by being kind, we increase the chances that others will be there for us when we need it.

What's more, King shared the problems with having expectations for rewards that are too high. We might feel severely disappointed if we set our expectations too high. So it's best to have little to no expectations when doing something for others; from a utilitarian, as well as a deontological point of view.

"There’s an important point too here for people on the receiving end of kindness. If they can, it’s, of course, great to say thank you and add the positive impact it has for you e.g., 'Thank you, It’s great to know that someone cares.' That can really boost the glow for the giver and encourage them to give more," she told Bored Panda what we can all do when somebody else goes the extra mile for us. It's best to vocalize our gratitude instead of leaving it to someone else's imagination.

This is what a REAL parent does, they think of their kids and not themselves! She’s amazing and loving and deserves everything good in life. I hope they treat her like the queen she is!

"It may also be helpful for the person to think about why they are seeking attention and reward from an external source, a key part of being happy is feeling comfortable with who you are and accepting life the way it is. I’d suggest that the person taking time to build up their self-care to become happier and more resilient. Perhaps start with a personal gratitude practice to appreciate what they already have in life, writing down three things each day that we are grateful for can boost happiness."

Doing something nice for others without expecting absolutely anything in return (whether rewards, praise, or attention) is the essence of giving.

The fact that we feel good about doing wholesome things for others doesn’t mean that we’re not altruistic—our brains are simply rewarding us for being social and looking out for the collective which we depend on. At the end of the day, helping others out feels good. On a biological and spiritual level.

Some teenagers in the UK started putting little signs up on bridges with the details of the Samaritans and other helplines for those who head to the bridges to commit suicide. I believe that they lost someone who jumped from a bridge.

In modern times, a lot of us assume that human beings are fundamentally selfish and self-interested. That, however, might just be a big bunch of pessimistic and cynical boohockey. Rutger Bregman, the author of ‘Humankind: A Hopeful History,’ challenges the notion that we’re inherently selfish. Instead, Bregman argues that we should assume that people are good. It’s not just wishful thinking, though!

According to Bregman, there’s an evolutionary basis for our instinct to cooperate rather than compete and to trust rather than distrust. In the book, Bregman gives a fresh new take on the last 200k years of our history by reframing the most famous events and studies done. This sort of shift has powerful effects—changing our perspective about the nature of humankind can help us create lasting change in society, politics, economics, and everywhere.

On a personal note, we agree with Bregman. And it’s articles like the one you’re reading now that give us hope that everyone’s got a mini Santa Claus inside of them who goes the extra mile all year long. Not just on Christmas.

Years ago my cousin and I, while drinking together, said we should make some bandaids for all skin tones and call them “Blend aids” so they blend to your skin tone and everyone can be included. Our million dollar idea now was put to light by someone else lol. It really is a good idea, but we should have done something about it then instead of let someone else create the idea. Either way I’m glad to see inclusion in something so small.

As a teacher, I can tell you, things like this mean so much, and are saved, cherished, and revisited on days when you're ready to give up. I had folders full of things like this, unfortunately they were thrown out without my knowing, but I look forward to trying to earn new ones once this virus is under control, and we're all back in the classroom. Oh well, Happy Holidays, Everyone!!! Best of Luck in the New Year!!!

My friend Deirdre's two little kids are average in any ways, but when it comes to kindness, they are off the charts. One of their teachers was hospitalized for cancer treatment and they taught everyone in the school how to fold origami birds. Parents donated wrapping paper cut into 6-inch squares and helped string up the birds so they could be hung in the window of the the teacher's room. There were hundreds of brightly colored birds and each one had a wish written inside of it.

An Autistic Boy, Who Can't Be Touched, Connects With A Service Dog, As His Mom Bursts Into Tears Of Hope And Joy

An Autistic Boy, Who Can't Be Touched, Connects With A Service Dog, As His Mom Bursts Into Tears Of Hope And Joy

I'm not sure why, but people still ask us why we place service dogs with children sometimes. Let me help you understand, from a momma who knows first hand:
See this moment? I've never experienced a moment like this.
This picture was taken near the end of the day after my autistic five year old was finally able to sit down with his new Service Dog Tornado. He flew across the entire ocean, stopped in multiple states, and uprooted his entire routine to travel the globe for this. He was so overwhelmed through the day that he had to leave to take a break for a couple hours before he could come back. This boy is the strongest child I have ever met; he has faced countless rude and ignorant adults and children who do not understand him, who have hurt him, and who have not valued him because he is different. This picture captures the face of a mother who saw her child, who she can't hug, wash, dress, snuggle and touch freely lay on his new Service dog of his own free will, with a purposeful unspoken attachment. This is the face of a mom who has seen her son experience countless failed social interactions on the playground in an attempt to have a friend. Any friend. Any kind of connection. She has sat with her son while he has cried at night for months because he has no consistent connections outside of the family no matter how hard he tries and no matter what he works hard on in his Autism therapies. It doesn't transfer to the natural occurring world for him. And now she is sitting behind her son silently watching this moment, with the air sucked from her lungs, and no words to say.
Holding her mouth and silently crying because she doesn't want to distract him from the moment and break him away from a pure, honest, and truly fulfilling moment for her son-of his own free will. This is truly magic. Words cannot explain it.
I have cried so many times for this boy, but this is the very first time I have cried for a reason like this.
It's new, it's painful, it's wonderful, and it's grateful. I will always stand behind this boy (probably still crying ) but I am grateful that he will have Tornado to stand beside him. The 4 Paws magic is real. The wait is long, but this moment right here makes it worth every moment of waiting. It's worth every fight for services for my son, every diagnosis, every new provider, every dollar spent, every paper filled out, every school meeting, every shed tear, every step forward, every step back, and every wonder of the unknown future. Some how because of this- because of Tornado- I know everything will be okay.

Service animals are very important for people with disabilities. However, taking your pet everywhere you go and calling it an emotional support animal is not the same thing as a service animal. Service animals have training.

YES! I was chatting with someone and she was talking about how wonderful her support dog was and I asked her which organisation trained the dog and she said 'oh, well, we're doing it'. Turned out to be exactly what you're describing. They're not the same thing. People need to know exactly how to train the dogs and how to fit them with the needs of the person. This is not a simple matter. I'm not saying people can never do it themselves but just that they won't usually have the expertise and making it up as you go along can be problematic. I've worked with people who have guide dogs, a colleague worked for Dogs For The Disabled - they all get frustrated with this.

For some , like my 15 yr. old, textures can be extremely frustrating. He is on the mile side of the spectrum, but clothes in general drive him nuts. The texture of coconut, kiwis (even if the "hairs" are cut off, rough blankets. I am 57, but I am pretty sure I would have been diagnosed with ASD, if it had been around then. Can't stand anything tight on my throat like turtlenecks or even cowl necks. I cut the collars on t-shirts to sleep in. I never understood kids my age, but I had sports and just didn't really care about why the other kids were different. ASD has so many different forms.

My niece said in lieu of Christmas presents this year, she wanted to buy each kid in her class a family dinner. She said almost half of her class is going hungry. She didn't want anyone to be hungry on Christmas. My family pulled our money together and bought the ingredients for each family (19 total) to make a whole chicken dinner on Christmas. Her dad's family decided to add to the merriment and surprised us with a board game for each family.

A Kind Stranger Drove Two Hours And Used His Drone To Recover Meadow, Who Was Lost In The Woods For 10 Days

A Kind Stranger Drove Two Hours And Used His Drone To Recover Meadow, Who Was Lost In The Woods For 10 Days

Meadow was missing in our town for over a week. It has been snowing and quite cold where we were, so the whole town rallied together to search for Meadow but to no avail. I thought I’d try my luck and share the lost dog poster on our local Subreddit. A stranger Redditor responded immediately and offered to look for Meadow with his drone. I asked the search team to give me the more precise coordinates and shared that with him. To be honest, I lost all hope at that point as it’s been more than 10 days. I also didn’t expect a stranger to go at the length it would require to look for Meadow.
Then at 3:30 PM yesterday, I got a ping that he found Meadow! The length this dude went to is insane: He drove 1.5 hours from where he was and spent forever until his drone went out of the battery to look for Meadow

I gave up the bottle in 1993 and it was one of the smartest things I ever did. Keep living sober one day at a time. IT will be worth the effort.

I didn't used to have much sympathy with alcoholics. Then I had a complete nervous breakdown where I was literally banging my head against the wall. I ended up suicidal. I ate. I ate and ate, not because I am a greedy pig but because I had to. Unless you have experienced that you won't know what I mean. I am now hugely overweight but not stuffing my face with everything in sight. I have a lot more sympathy with alcoholics because I now know what it's like for your brain to tell you you HAVE to do something that is really bad for you. Your husband has made an incredible achievement and may he be given the strength to keep it up.

Good for husband. It really takes hero to win sobriety. I wasted half my life pushing happiness in a bottle and now the second half is so joyous without alcohol. I wish the same for your guy. He and you are amazing.

Sikhs are some of the best people there are. I visited the Golden Temple in India, where they serve 100,000 meals A DAY to anyone who needs them. It's all done voluntarily and you only donate if you can afford to. It blew my mind.

Not just the Golden temple, there are many temples in India which feed the hungry for free round the year, entirely run by donations. Right now, there is a campaign running in India to stop taxing and collecting money from temples in India just as mosques and churches are not taxed.

Do it but please research the dog you want. Many go for the cuteness but many of those cute dogs (huskies) require ALLOT of exercise. Don't go for a 'working' dog if you don't have the time to take it out multiply times a day. But do adopt; animals bring so much love to your life.

Honestly, they probably wanted him working on work while being at work. When working in a shop if you are not helping customers, you should be dusting/cleaning/stocking, etc. And if you are a cashier only, the store is usually busy enough that it shouldn't be that long in between customers.

I find it’s teenage kids that sabotage gaming. As a girl gamer I deal with a lot of perverts on top of mouthy kids. I usually play solo games to avoid that.

i'm an old fart so when gaming started to be consistent w/my son i was concerned w/his 'isolation' & not interacting with people more. that is, until i overheard their conversation and realized that he & his gaming friends were really friends & not just random people he talked to. he's now 40 and he has made friends all over the world & learned about them & their cultures/societies.

I have a tattoo over my naval, when I had my first (of many) abdominal surgery the surgeon did a bikini line cut for me so my tattoo was protected. I had one surgeon who had to cut through it because it was an emergency, but he still spent time stitching me up and putting my tattoo back together. This was after a really difficult operation that had taken over ten hours.

I've had 3 surgeries involving my spine and each time my doc spent extra time after carefully gluing my incision together so my backpiece wasn't marred. ~~~ He's proudly showed off his incision gluing chops to interns and residents every single appointment since then. He even took pictures to include (with my permission) in his industry convention lectures.

When I had pre-op consultation with my surgeon, for shoulder replacement, I asked him if he could please go around my tat of a cat. As you can see, he complied, but I found out later, he told his surgical staff to cut around the kitty, per my request. Kitty-scar...861084.jpg Kitty-scar-5fe6230861084.jpg

My husband had reconstruction surgery on both shoulders and his surgeon did the same. When he couldn't cut around a tattoo, he ensured it was sewn back together perfectly with little scarring. Little things like that are priceless.

This Time, It's The Tiny Humans Being Bros

This Time, It's The Tiny Humans Being Bros

I can't stop crying. If anyone thought there was no hope in our kids and teens you're wrong. The sole purpose of us putting this sign in our yard today was so kids wouldn't run to our door and be disappointed (our neighborhood usually gets 300-400 kids).

I looked on our doorbell camera tonight and saw that kids had been stopping at the sign. T.J. Thomas and I just went outside and found this.

The picture doesn't do it justice, it's a lot and the good stuff even. Seriously. On the best candy night of the year kids freely and generously shared with strangers and showed so much love and kindness. So amazing!

I hate thieves of any kind. We had our brand-new truck stolen just a few months after we saved and saved to buy it. Our awesome police canine officer found it and we got it back with minimal damage. That scooter was this young person's car and I know they felt the same. A pox on the evil persons who did it. Kudoes and love to the person who replaced it!

That's just nice. Maybe she never went on an airplane before. It's a little scary. First you have to go to the airport. Totally scary. Then you have to show your passport and allow to be searched. Frightening! What if the papers are not correct? What if you will be arrested or thrown into one of those places? What if the "cellphone " doesn't work? Ok, got through all that and getting on the airplane. Looks ok. The other people are behaving as if this just a normal everday thing. At this point i decided to just look out the window because curious about how the world looks from above.

Too bad travel by small aircraft/private aircraft aren't more affordable. My hubby's company had their own plane and arriving at an FBO at an airport is SO much better. Many companies actually assist individuals with issues to fly with a small group free of charge when the company is not using the plane. It spoils you in a heartbeat!

Why not spend the money on removing the birthmark from the kid instead??

    Sleazy Weaver
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

So instead of showing the kid that his birthmark is beautiful to the point that others would choose to look like him, & that his dad cares about him so much that he would want to look the same out of solidarity, you would want to confirm this boy's beliefs that his birthmark is something ugly & shameful that should be gotten rid of? How DARE you. How dare you suggest that this child would be better off removing part of himself rather than receiving a confidence boost. How dare you insinsuate this boy would be better off undergoing a painful & risky (considering the size & placement as well as his age) procedure instead of being taught to love himself & his body. I can't imagine thinking in a way as cruel as you.

Doubletree Hotel Goes Above And Beyond For My 4-Year-Old Son

I made a reservation at Doubletree, and they asked what brought me to the area. I mentioned on the phone that my son, AJ, was turning 4 and we were taking a father-son trip to Kennedy space center and were going to go surfing in the Atlantic. This is the room when we showed up. They did the gift bag, boogie board, banner, everything!

Professor Takes Care Of Student's Baby, So She Could Study During Lecture

One of my Intro students sent me this pic of my colleague, Arkansas State University physics professor Bruce Johnson. She had a daycare conflict, so he told her to bring her baby to a study session. Then this happened.
She said, “He cares so much about the success of his students.” Clearly.

i was young when i had my son, living far from family, so no support. there was a little old lady, bea buffin, who lived by herself next door in a huge house. didn't have a lot of money so i literally washed clothes in my bathtub on a washboard. she noticed that as winter set in my clothes wouldn't dry but freeze so she invited me to use her dryer. so began a relationship w/her that was so helpful, especially w/breastfeeding. apparently, she had volunteered when she was young as a wet nurse for the nearby hospitals. thanks to her i was able to overcome obstacles w/breastfeeding. i'm 63 now but i still think about bea. a wonderful woman.

I agree. My mother had a cat start visiting her and was clearly homeless. She started to feed her and then eventually she called a rescue centre because, even though she couldn't take in the little cat herself, she was never going to leave her uncared for.

In the Netherlands he would have a health and safety inspector at his door to check the ride, a civil servant to tell him that he illegally built a fun park without the proper licenses and a tax-inspector to make an estimate of how much he earned on entrance fees.
