This artwork started out as a LIVE mixed media painting at Grove Fest. It is a pseudo abstract piece of a woman holding an umbrella, both taken up by a gust of wind, her apron strings become butterfly wings. I made the woman and umbrella out of wrinkled transparent paper I collaged onto a painted surface. I added acrylic paint with an old ID card, scraping the surfaces and reapplying the paint in different areas. Spraying the surface with water and more paint either spattered or with my so-called palette knife. Building up the layers with paint and texture, then let it dry. While working I took photos of my hands covered in paint. I ran off copies of these on my laser printer when I got home and had old copies of past artworks laying around of musical instruments, owls, photos of clouds captured on my smartphone. Collaging the hands, clouds, music and owl prints onto the piece, applying more paint in the process. More ideas came to me as the piece evolved. Adding a drawing I did of the Carl Milles statue, “Sun Glitter” and painted in the words, “Man is the Dream Of The Dolphin”. After drying I wrote in snippets of musical words and poetry. Pulling the piece together outlining figures with a black paint marker and more paint, adding the sunflower, butterflies, music symbols and more. The work has a dream like quality, loaded with colors, textures and thoughtful words.
