Food packaging waste equals to about one-third of all trash, costing governments billions of dollars each year in disposal expenses. Bored Panda has collected a set of images, proving this huge plastic waste contributor to the global waste crisis could be reduced significantly.

Product packaging solutions often become the subjects of heated debates. While the eco-minded consumers want it to be as minimal as possible (meaning fully recyclable), manufacturers often fire back that they don't want their products to start decomposing in the store or become an easy target to shoplifters and put many layers of wasteful and entirely unnecessary plastic wrapping. And while some of their arguments have reasons behind them, a lot of the time the amount of plastic wrap is needlessly excessive. Do we need a pill to be wrapped in three layers of plastic? Or, better yet, casings for coke cans?

Now, we do agree that a zero waste life can be quite challenging to lead sometimes, but it is something we should all aspire to if we don't want to evacuate from our planet Earth in the near future.

Scroll down to learn why we need to rethink packaging and vote for the worst or most ridiculous images!

I guess most of you don’t remember the Tylenol poisonings. (Google it). That is when the industries began sealing up pills, making plastic packaging, and also childproof caps. Also, the only reason we have plastic grocery bags is because in the 60’s, people started complaining about chopping down trees for paper bags. Now everyone wants to get rid of the plastic! As an old hippie, I get it, but how about we SOLVE a problem before creating another one?

Why is it stuff like allergy pills and stomach pills have impenetrable packaging but stuff people actually OD on like aspirin and tylenol doesnt?

Gayle Bynum Cardosa
Community Member

Aspirin and Tylenol and those types of things have tamper resistant packaging because of the 1982 Tylenol tamperings that resulted in 7 deaths. Someone took Tylenol off the shelves of stores and put Cyanide in them. One of the people who died was a 12 year old girl. The person was never found but they had a major suspect. That's why drugs have to have tamper resistant packaging. When it comes to certain drugs I'm OK with this. I've seen what people do to stuff in stores...I saw a guy open a jar of peanut butter, stick his hand in it and walk away. Look at what Arianna Grande did to those donuts. People are nasty. Sometimes packaging is necessary to protect others.

It could have been packaged without the blue layer, but, such a small pill would disappear in a shop otherwise.

Gayle Bynum Cardosa

It's true that when I worked in a grocery store many years ago we would find these types of boxes emptied out and shoved behind other products. Usually because the product inside was tiny and easy to hide and it was pretty expensive and the scummy thieves that stole felt it was too expensive to pay for.

This pill looks like it went for 2.49 (I can't read the price exactly), but I think they usually are sold for more. If you spend that much on a pill, this packaging makes it seem more valuable somehow. If they just handed you a pill you would see what a rip-off it is.
