Every one of us has different interests, hobbies or opinions about various things. Similarly, every one of us has different income and the way we choose to deal with our money. And by that I mean some of us like to spend our paychecks as soon as we receive them, some of us try to save up but also buy necessities or something that we really want, and others simply try to save up everything and buy things that are only really necessary.
However, probably most of us have things that may be hobbies, maybe collections or maybe just some other thing, like, lets say skincare, that when we really think about it - we spend so much money on... But you know what? If it makes us happy and doesn’t harm us in any way, it’s not that bad, right?
On that note, one Reddit user started a thread online asking netizens to share their interests that they spend unjustifiable amounts of money on. We have gathered 40 of them here, so scroll down, upvote the ones that look like they are worth the money or maybe you are also guilty of spending too much money on them and share your thoughts!

Books. People in my high school used to joke that I’d own a library by the time I turned 30. I’m 19 and I already have a “library” in my house. It’s really a spare bedroom that I put all my books and a couple comfy chairs in, but I call it a library.
Personally, I say that is a justifiable expense. I love my mini library and like to lend books to share the pleasure.
Did you ever have someone return a book in visibly worse condition than it was when you lent it to them?
Load More Replies...Yes indeed, my books feed my soul and my library is my peaceful, safe place.
*curls up in the chair in the corner* I'll have you know I have a library card.
We have had the same collection of books in our bookcase for forty years. They now smell musty. Can't read them as the type font is too small for my bad eyesight. Switched to ebooks and can enlarge the type on my laptop to make them real easy to read. And they don't smell musty!
I go for ebooks, not always that much cheaper, though there's a bit on kindle unlimited, and everything out of copywrite is available free. It does save on the space though.
It's SO awesome to be able to hold 100's of books in one small book-sized device. It would have been my dream come true as a kid! And my mom would have been less annoyed by the multitude of half read books I left all over the house. :)
Load More Replies...I have thousands of books! I have had to promise my wife that, from now on, I will only ever buy hardbacks!
I used to take a lot of baths due to a back injury, and my ex hubby used to joke I had more books in my bathroom than he's read in his life
Dogs. They have more toys and snacks in the house than I do.
Having a dog in ones life isn't a 'hobby'...Pets (of any kind) enrich our lives. They are family.
*grumbles* I always nearly faint when I see her food bill once I'm done, she eats more than I do. I blame my husband for all her toys though. She only actually likes about a dozen out of the giant trunk.
Crochet.
I have three jumbo size Tupperware containers full of yarn, but you best believe I always find a reason to buy more.
I agree - Just bought this new skein of Bernat Softee Chunky! preacherso...c337fa.jpg
So, here's a thing...I am drawn to yarns and fabrics like mad. I neither knit nor sew. Can't explain it.
Have you ever spent time in a cryogenic correctional facility?

2 of yarn, which is aside from the fact that one entire wall of my room is furnished with cubby-style shelves full of yarn. Like, it legit looks like a yarn store. Plus three tubs of finished items that I really need to donate since I don't vend at the monthly art walk anymore. T_T
Load More Replies...I love to crochet, but the majority of my yarn is second hand from my friends who over bought yarn and are off loading it on me so that they have room to buy more. 😄
I have three or four rubbermaid bins in the basement full of yarn. And that isn't even the yarn I use. Beyond I actually use is in a giant blanket chest in my bedroom and then there are two laundry hampers in living room. The real issue is what I want to start a new project inevitably the colors I have aren't right or I don't have enough of the same type of yarn, or it's not the right way so every time I start a new project i trek down to the yarn store and buy more
I was inspired with friends, so got two hip high bureaus to keep my fabric in. Nicer than plastic tubs esp in my sunny house.
Load More Replies...Bullshittt... it doesnt have to be expensive at all. You can make nice things with cheaper yarn as well.
Legos and tools. Both are expensive
Depends on the tools. Generally for hand tools, the older the better and they can be found at garage sales, classifieds, etc. Same with stationary wood working machines - I'll take a 1964 Powermatic cabinet saw over a modern Sawstop any day of the week. As far as powered hand tools (impact drivers, drills, etc.) buy the best you can afford and cry once instead of buying something cheap and crying every time you use it.
Yes, they can be costly, but they last forever and you can always find someone who wants to play with them.
I own and built just over 60 sets. Just finished the Eiffel Tower, 10,000 pieces and 5 feet tall
Lego is so expensive these days! And yes, I'm aware it makes me sound old
I spent over $3,000 on a gaming laptop so I could play my favorite video games while traveling.
I've mainly been using it to browse Reddit. I'm using it for that purpose right now.
If I were more mature, I might argue that the money I spent was unjustifiable. Luckily, I live in blissful ignorance of the consequences of my own actions.
I like to play Minecraft on my computer. I'm really liking the new update. It feels pretty groundbreaking
It's better, but it's still not as much fun as a decent modpack; I'm currently enjoying All The Mods 8.

Whatever random hobby or interest I randomly acquire that peter’s out after about a month and I’m left with stuff I won’t touch again.
This is me and my adult ADHD. Spent hundreds, if not more, on camera gear because I used to do photography...lost most of my interest and had to sell the gear to pay bills after a major health issue happened and I can't work right now.
This is a huge ADHD thing called "Hobby Bouncing" Something interests you (which is a normal thing for all.people) but ADHD people cycle through a pattern. It starts with Interest, lets say gardening. Instead of starting a small garden to learn about it and try it out, us ADHD people tend to get "hyper focused" and go all in, and will tear up half their yard to make the garden. Then they will do "dopamine seeking" and go buy every plant and gardening tool and accessories they can. You then obsess over the garden, and spend all their time thinking, researching, and doing, which is called " time blindness". Then two things can happen. One, is you grow a beautiful garden, enjoy the bounty, but then lose Interest because the excitement is over. You then don't tend to the garden and it gets overgrown, called the "fall behind". You them become so overwhelmed in what has to be done with the garden to start a new one in the spring, which you lost interest in doing anyway, and that is that, and you have already moved on to backpacking as your new thing. The second thing is that it becomes too challenging, or their is a hurdle to overcome, and instead of asking for help " failure avoidance" you start to avoid the task "task avoidance". You then get behind and it becomes overwhelming and you shut down because even though you know what needs to be done, you cannot prioritize, organize, or start"Executive Dysfunction". You then feel guilty and depressed about it, so you seek something to make you feel better, which is the new hobby of backpacking. Both examples are common in the world of ADHD people.

Horses
This is the first time in the majority of my life that I DON'T own a horse. I have more spare money than I know what to do with. ;) Most likely I'll just save it and buy another horse. But the expense and responsibility of having a horse can be very stressful.
god i wish i could own a horse but alas i have neither the money nor space 😔
Well, I recently took a break from Magic the gathering.......to pick up warhammer 40k......
Honestly I'm starting to believe Games Workshop is run by Tzeentch...
Load More Replies...I always feel compelled to say something any time I hear a Magic player talk about picking up 40k. It's an even more expensive hobby, and if you decide to get put of it it's much more difficult to sell and you will probably get far less than you paid for it.
Same with most hobbies. Mr.Awkward lady sold off his train sets at auction and got £60 for them! One train cost more than that!

Guitars and hifi gear. It was all cheap if my wife asks.
I used to play the guitar all the time until I got hurt while playing and it broke. It wasn't to bad but ended up being a real fender bender
So many instruments. They barely fit in my apartment. The upright bass is bigger than the rest of my furniture.
Hello....I m the wife....my hubby doesn't even play the guitar. He loves collecting them. I guess we' ll eat them when we" ll run out of food
I am a keyboardist. If I was rich I would have a basement full of synthesizers. I only have five right now. They are simply too much fun.

My classic car. Bought it cash in 2012 at 29, have had it for 11 years, and have spent irresponsible amounts of money on upgrades and projects over the years.
I don't drink, smoke, I pack my own lunches for work, take public transportation to work, but when it comes to my car, if it improves the drivability and reliability, money is no object.
I have many interests in my life - biking, walking, rowing, photography - they all pale in comparison to the release and joy I experience when I have the perfect drive with my wife, family and friends with me. It's expensive, frustrating with issues, repairs, upgrades, but it is the only interest in my life that has truly caused me to weep with joy during the experience.
Edit: Sorry everyone, did not intend to be cryptic - got too excited referencing it and forgot to list what it is.

Almost guaranteed NO ... revealing words/phrases: "upgrades", "improves driveability and reliability" (& it's becoming staggeringly rare to find any truly original cars that are driven). Source: have a fleet of 67/68 fullsize Chrysler products. Have never owned contemporary cars in my life. Experience tells me most folks don't want to put up with points, drum brakes, and in the case of late 60s Chryslers, don't want to deal with the finicky foibles of really lean running engines so they bastardize the carburetors and they are too rich. (They are actually built to pass even modern emissions requirements, believe it or not, & actually can if driven properly.) I have only ever driven them as-built, and actually consider them more reliable with no "upgrades". Right down to 8.55-14 bias tires. But these things require skills most folks didn't even have when the cars were new. Been studying their engineering and having conversations with real 60s Chrysler Engineers since I was ten years old.

Gardening/landscaping
I used to be really terrified of gardening and plants. But eventually I grew a pear
I’ve thought of standing out on the street with a sign that says “will work for plants”
expensive? Joking? I prefer my garden over ANYTHING store bought!!
It can be expensive. Or you can be a cheapskate like me and beg cuttings, grow from seed and take the odd abandoned plant from derelict sites.
Live music. I shudder to think how much I’ve spent between tickets, travel, hotels, food, drinks, and extracurriculars over 25 years
And I read the average price of a Taylor Swift concert was like $450!
Load More Replies...My husband and I saw The White Buffalo in Boston, MA this past February. Tickets were $25/ea. Same as they were 6 years ago when we first saw him. I'm not really into music or any artists specifically but I am obsessed with White Buff. Front row this time instead of all the way at the back. Possible eye contact and he definitely spit on me. It was magical.
yesssss !! nothing better than being at spitting distance lol. I love being sweat on and i love having to dive away for guitarheads :-D

HA *evil laughter* Its not that i spent all my money on seeing bands and traveling :-D ahem. you can make the traveling cheaper with taking a bus and sleeping in hostels. When im on the road i usually only eat supermarket sandwiches. I make my own breakfast and coffee. Other than that depending on the concert how much the tickets are. Just yesterday i saw a FAAAABULOUS concert for only 12,50. Just that bands arend famous doesnt mean they are not good. Im glad most of my bands are not famous. edit: also, all the solo traveling to see my bands, abroad and national has made me a stronger, better and wiser woman. Therapy is more expensive i guess!!
Sounds like my singer. There are bands he has seen over 40 times. Not a week goes by without at least 1 concert.
Support local artists. It's less expensive (as long as you stick to alcohol at the shows).
Home cooking.
I have 15+ different Wüsthof knives, Le Creuset pans and dutch ovens, and a ton of other things like mixing bowls, cutting boards, etc, that are more premium brands because prepping and cooking helps with my anxiety and depression, and if I'm gonna splurge on something, it's going to be on something(s) I use regularly.
Bless 'em, but it doesn't have to be that way. Though, if it makes them happy (or less depressed/anxious), more power to 'em!
I make amazing rustic bread that is so good I give it for Christmas gifts and I use two dutch ovens I got from Aldi for $34. Doesn't have to be expensive to be good.

Dishes. I used to work for a tableware company and have several 12 piece place settings in different patterns. I also collect whiteware, especially small creamers and ramekins.
If it makes you happy, im all for it. You also bought the good stuff, this equipment will last a long time with proper care.
Isn’t a Dutch oven when you fart and hold your partners head under the covers.
i have non of the super expensive stuff. I buy my pans at IKEA, oven from the supermarket, knives from a sale, mixer, bowls and cuttingboards from HEMA etc etc etc and i still make great meals. If i ever make 5000 bucks a month i will get the nice expensive stuff. Good for everyone using it, but i dont have to.
I have ADHD. I can justify any amount of money I spend to chase that dopamine.
Absolutely! I'm now seriously in debt and it was 90% impulse buying. FML

Been into photography since my early years (preteen). About 18 years ago I decided I'd up the game and get into Leica as a platform. Best decision I've made as far as improving my work, but $$$$ whoo boy. I had hands on a $15000 lens recently, did not buy!
Coin collection, and especially ancient coins. I'm a far cry from the fat cats who could put a museum to shame with their Roman and Greek coins, but I'm fairly confident that I have the largest and most complete collection of Indo-Sassanian coins in private hands, or possibly in total. There are types that I own 60-80% of all known examples of.
Roman collection is coming along, although I can't bring myself to cross the threshold of spending more than $1,000 on a single coin. My kids are going to have a field day with that when I kick the bucket.
I have an Alexander the Great era one from Athens. Mind-blowing to think where that might have been in order to get to me.
Well... it probably spent some time on the black market, tbh. Artifacts like that are very useful to archaeologists on a dig, because if you find a coin among all the broken pottery and other stuff, you can date that layer pretty easily. But they're in demand by private collectors, so looters dig at potential archaeological sites to find them, which destroys the entire site. So please don't support this practice.

The Eurovision Song Contest. I became a fan at age 14 in 1993. I first attended the live show in Norway in 1996. Then every year until 2006, plus once more in 2015. I must have spent tens of thousands of pounds on Eurovision over the years. It’s taken me all over the place, including Israel, Ukraine and Latvia - to name just a few. Yes it’s been expensive, but I wouldn’t swap those experiences for anything!
I assume they did things other than just go to the event so, to me, that’s worth it to get to experience other people, places, food and cultures.
Check my post history. Hot Wheels are so damn cool lmao.
Don't you ever start collecting model cars. An old Ferrari 250 GTO (do you remember Vanilla Sky?) is cool to have on the shelf, but I have hundreds of Ferraris in 1:18. The cheapest was ~50€, the most expensive was 1600€. And they make new models every single f* week. I stopped to buy new models 2 years ago after 20+ years. Fortunately I run out of space :)
It was alcohol… now I can justify all my purchases because I didn’t spend them on booze.
That god damn noise my bmw makes. It wont go away no matter how many parts I replace.
You sure it's not a blinker? I know most BMW owners have never heard what one sounds like.
If a German can redesign a dependable three part mechanism with a unreliable ten part mechanism, that is what BMW will install. And only a mechanic who can read German will be able to repair it.
Booze. Mind you I’m not much of a drinker, and I can cradle a 1/6th dram of whiskey for half an hour. However, I am a sucker for supporting small, local distilleries and wineries, so I have a collection of unopened spirits bottles (the gf takes the wine lol).
I explain that I don’t have a drinking problem, just a “buy alcohol” problem.
Especially when you throw in the costs of missed work from hangovers, legal fees if you drink and drive, lost friendships and self respect….
A 1/6 dram?!? That’s a quarter medicine dropper full of whiskey! One bottle would last you three lifetimes.
Coffee.
Spent prob close to $5k on a super automatic, a traditional espresso machine, equipment, etc.
Oh lord... Back when I was a coffee drinker (and don't get me wrong, I still love it in theory), I preferred pouring freshly ground coffee into a simmering pot of water, letting it sit, stir once, let grounds settle to bottom and pour into cup. Found out later this is called 'Cowboy Coffee'.
And here i am enjoying my Douwe Egberts coffee from a 20 euro Tefal drip machine.
When you think how much you use a coffee machine and the fact it will last for years, that's not as ridiculous as it sounds.
On Super automatic #3, have spent a fair amount on coffee. Wont go back!
Gonna take a lifetime of coffee drinking to recoup the cost but, if that’s your thing, more power to you.
Eating out
Once a week, and I know that's too much. I enjoy cooking healthy meals at home! :) Especially when many of the ingredients come from my garden! :)
Machine tools and machinist tools. I'm a s**t for Starrett tools.
It's a slippery slope, for sure. Cheap lathe ownership leads to expensive lathe ownership, then when you design something that really needs milled features you become a mill owner, then comes the rotary table, the spindexer... Then hark, the call of the surface grinder! It never ends.
Starrett is just barely good enough. Mits are just as good or better atm. TESA rules the roost (they bought out Brown & Sharpe's hand tool division).
Anyone that has curly hair that has dived into “The Curly Girl Method”, already knows… HAIR PRODUCTS. I have a whole cabinet above the toilet AND medicine cabinet FULL of hair products. My husband gets so pissed, but then I remind him I am faithful, work full time, cook his meals, and don’t do [substances], so…
"My husband gets pissed" Seriously? Unbelievable Get a grip girl kick him to the curb
I wash my hair with lukewarm/cool water, and nothing else. If you do this, the natural coatings don't get stripped off and you don't need to use products to make up for them.
Other people have different hair textures other than yours. "No products, just change your water temperature!!!" doesn't work for everyone.

Load More Replies...Quite honestly... people used to go "You have to pay a subscription? No WAY! Why do you do it, it's expensive!" (Back in my EQ days) Well, they were the ones constantly broke, because they were out getting drunk every night. Me? I had fun playing "my game" and didn't spend any money. (I think the sub was $100 a year? Something like that.) So when I wanted to buy something, I usually had the disposable income to do it. Granted, it was usually a new PC lol. But my SO liked to stay home, and when we went out we easily spent £100 between us (meals, drinks etc) and both of us agreed that we can only justify that once or twice a month.

Running shoes. I've got about 8 retired pairs in my closet and 6 active pairs. I probably drop $1500/year on running shoes.
You should do like we used to do - and call it "spend" instead of "drop", then it might resonate what you're doing.
Runner here. If you are doing the miles, sure. I have at least 4 current running pairs, as you should switch from run to run (different brands and types of shoes I might add).
Nowadays they say you are supposed to replace your running shoes every 100 miles or something like that. Back in the 70s and 80s when I was doing a lot of running I bought a good pair of running shoes then wore them until I went through the soles. Probably thousands of miles on each pair.
I had a high-end pair of athletic shoes that I never wore. I always wear steel-toe boots for work and so I wore them in general. Went on a vacation and thought “I’ll just wear regular shoes” so I wore the athletic shoes. Apparently age breaks down shoes more than I thought, and upon arriving at destination I had blisters and shoe insoles were sticking to my socks. Those retired pairs the poster referred to should be binned for safety.
I just bought my first pair of goretex running shoe and am returning them. They are so stiff. What do you wear when it rains?
Lately, cycling products
My husband's bicycles cost thousands, then there's the upkeep. As it's winter now, he gets bored of not being able to cycle outdoors (Raynaud's) and starts looking for his next purchase. He works hard for his money and his hobby makes him happy (and super fit!) so it's money well spent.
Tell me about it...I dropped $700 on a Trek FX1 Disc and rode it a whole combined distance of about 60 miles. I learned shortly thereafter that I had a balance issue and then had a foot and leg amputation. I have it up for sale but so far it's only been the scammers reaching out.
