We have all seen people with unique physical traits, whether it’s an atypical birthmark or unusually shaped ears. More often than not, these are due to special conditions that highlight the intricacy of the human body.

The photos you’re about to see are from people who drew wild cards in the genetic lottery. They view the world differently from the rest of “normal” society, making their cases all the more fascinating.

But what’s more noteworthy is how these people embrace their eccentricities instead of viewing them as an abnormality to be ashamed of. After all, having foldable tongues and a sixth toe on the right foot are excellent conversation starters.

This is a new set of photos continuing from the series Bored Panda previously published.

Yes she is beautiful, but Albinism is not just about white hair and sunburns. In most cases people with albinism also have really bad eyesight to the point of being legally blind and other health problems. It is NOT fun. So please people, check if you are a carrier of the gene mutation for Albinism. It's rezessive, so both parents need to have it for this to happen.

Very true. My cousin's daughter has Albinism and was legally blind before adulthood. Her parents also have darker skin, so most people assume she isn't their child until they explain the situation. She's in her early 20s now, so she's used to it, but it's hard to be different when you're a kid.

My twin brother and I were born approximately 6 weeks early, 58 years ago. He had some hair, I was bald for several months, ever close to a year. I was very fair-skinned too, so they referred to me as Casper the friendly ghost , like the cartoon

Stunning Blue Eyes. A Girl With Waardenburg Syndrome

Stunning Blue Eyes. A Girl With Waardenburg Syndrome

I am a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa. I live in the same village as this girl named Suru. Along with the beautiful eyes, she is completely deaf and has a patch of white skin on her right hand.

THIS. It really bugs me that this child's photograph is on social media for thousands to see because apparently she's some kind of spectacle. She's an "African" (not any specific country?) child with a unique appearance including the blue eyes so beloved by European beauty standards, therefore it's fine to put her photo on social media like you might do if you photographed a beautiful bird on a branch outside your window? Of course she's a gorgeous little girl and of course she should feel proud of who she is and unashamed of her deafness or her striking appearance. But she's not a curiosity for volunteers from abroad to gawk at and photograph for their social media.

I'm disabled due to a genetic condition, and I also have a tiny bit of conmection to the Deaf community through my ongoing American Sign Language studies. I don't think it's wrong as a blanket rule to acknowledge a genetic condition as an "error" or problem or sickness; I certainly consider my own condition to be very, very challenging and painful. I do consider it a mistake in my genes, because it causes me significant chronic pain and has had multiple quite dangerous complications. However, it's always worth asking the question: to what extent is this person disabled by their genes, and to what extent are they disabled by the structure of the society around them? Her eyes and patch of pale skin certainly don't cause her harm on their own; it's only that others might bully her or be unaccepting. And deafness... it's not as simple as I myself had thought before spending some time around Deaf people and learning from them! Not all deaf people view their own deafness as a harmful burden. As one Deaf ASL instructor told me, he is very happy as a Deaf man. He has a wonderful community of other Deaf people in our city, he is a successful teacher who enjoys what he does; he gets to teach hearing folks about Deaf history and culture and he gets to help people who are becoming deaf or welcoming a deaf person into their family feel confident in their communication skills. He "listens" to music by feeling the vibrations, he has a dating life and social life .

I have long thought that black people look amazing with green or blue eyes. There was a young guy who shopped at a store I worked at in my early 20s, mid 1980s. He was a black guy with a medium toned complexion. But he had beautiful, striking green eyes..I know it was rude, but the 3 of us who, all women, worked there probably ogled him way more than was polite. I'm guessing it happened to him fairly often. He was really good looking.

I‘ve seen pictures of wardenburg syndrome. Does anyone know if it is more common in poor areas or parts of specific countries or something? I‘ve seen many different pictures, but somehow it’s most often poor looking black children. That‘s why I‘m asking. Of course, it might be because people think they look more beautiful, because of the contrast of black skin and blue eyes.

    Zedrapazia

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The Waardenburg Syndrome doesn't kill them as kids if you mean that, it's a genome error that affects melanomas in eyes, skin and/or hair. It belongs to the same family of genetic illnesses as albinism and shows up around 1/40.000 in humans, causing roughly 3% of all deaf people to be deaf. It's not particularly prevalent in African countries, but the reason why you see it that often in photos with them is because black people with blue eyes look special whereas white people with blue eyes aren't particularly out of the ordinary. Plus, it doesn't necessarily make you deaf and can also just cause you to get a lot of sunburns or get blinded easily, so white people don't necessarily notice they have it either. It far more is rare in Asian people.

Experts say the most common genetic disorders result from DNA mutations in genes inherited from our parents. They classify these issues as chromosomal, complex (a.k.a. multifactorial), and single-gene (a.k.a. monogenic).

Chromosomal disorders target the structures that hold genes within each cell. Some prime examples are Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorder, and Klinefelter syndrome, in which assigned males at birth have an extra X chromosome.

Complex/multifactorial genetic disorders are a byproduct of gene mutations from environmental factors such as chemical exposure, as well as the use of substances like tobacco and alcohol. Arthritis, late-onset Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, and migraines fall under this category.

As the name suggests, monogenic disorders result from a mutation in one gene. Some examples are sickle cell disease, cystic fibrosis, congenital deafness, and muscular dystrophy.

Just Because You Look A Little Different, Doesn't Mean You Have To Look Like The People Mostly Shown In Media

In elementary school, I was made fun of for my birthmark. I got called Pizza Face, Tomato Face, and other harmful names. So I tried to laser it away to make my appearance more comfortable for other people to look at, so I was less of a target. I’m forever grateful that the laser never ended up working. I wear my birthmark proudly. It makes me me.

My grandfather had a port wine stain birthmark over half of his face. I never even realised it was anything other than just "grandpa's face" until I was about 12 and a school friend asked what was wrong with his face. He was born in in 1899 so any form of laser treatment was never an option, but I don't think his lifer was poorer for it.

My son has a smaller version of this on top of his head. The pediatrician was worried about that and asked for a specialized consultation and a MRI. Happens that it's not only a birth mark (angioma) but a defect in his skull/brain vessels called sinus pericranii. Fortunately his sinus is very mild and lilely to resorb. If not he would have brain surgery.

However, there are much more special cases, like Marfan syndrome. On the surface, it looks like a person with a lanky frame and a narrow facial structure. However, it is a result of a severe, incurable chronic disorder.

Marfan syndrome affects the body’s connective tissues, causing the people stricken with it to have unusually long limbs. While it may seem harmless, this condition may cause life-threatening issues like aortic aneurysms because it also affects the heart and blood vessels.

Doctors usually prescribe blood pressure medications to patients with Marfan syndrome to alleviate the pressure on the aorta. In some cases, people with this condition must undergo preventive surgery.

When I'm relaxed and/or in a good mood, they are green blue-ish, when I get really really angry they turn grey. // I remember the dialogue with the lady who issued my first personal document/passport (at almost 16): " Height?" Unless he means they changed after several years, it's very normal for babies to be born with blue eyes that darken. But that left eye (his right) *is* pretty unique looking....

My husband is freakishly tall and thin with long a@@ fingers and extremeties. He was on his way to get a Marfan's diagnosis due to him ticking all boxes of the physical traits. Genetic testing luckily confirmed him not having it. He's just your regular Slenderman I guess.

There's a woman on YouTube who has a baby with Marfan's and she documents the struggle as he grows. There are unfortunately a lot more complications than just being tall and thin.

I’ve got mild Marfan syndrome so i have the height but lucklily haven’t got the problematic heart. Reaching the top shelf is fun but buying shoes isn’t! We just had a baby through IVF with it being a hereditary condition. Science is amazing.

Not cool at all. It comes with lots of stares from strangers and chronic pain as a bonus. Envy her for her height is like envy someone in a wheelchair for not having to look for a chair. Not cool.

The internet is incorrect on this one. Michael Phelps himself states he doesn’t have it, and as a specialist in connective tissue disorders I concur with him. Looking at his photos - with his career choice being a bonus as I can see his body properly - he doesn’t particularly exhibit the clinical signs of Marfan Syndrome other than being very tall. There’s many exceptionally tall people who don’t have Marfan Syndrome. People who have it are Joey Ramone from The Ramons, and actor Javier Botet who’s known for portraying many movie monsters including The Crooked Man from The Conjuring 2, all of the ghosts in Crimson Peak, Mama in Mama, Hobo in IT and IT 2, and Set in The Mummy (Tom Cruise version), to name but a few. It’s possible that Julius Caesar and Abraham Lincoln also had Marfan Syndrome.

"Veinticuatro" is how you would say "24" in Spanish. Seeing as the title lists him as having 12 fingers and 12 toes -> 12 + 12 = 24, so yes, he has 24 digits.

I had a friend named Shauna that had albinism we went all the way back to elementary school. She got picked on until she reached high school and found a home with all of us Alternative/Grunge/Punk/Goth and Riot Grrrls. Shauna had all the traits of Albinism as well as pink eyes so she was almost completely blind. She was shy for a long time, but once she knew she was safe with us and could be herself, she was hell on wheels. We called her our "Pink Princess" and she owned that s**t. Shauna had diabetes and when she was 19 she developed Diabetic Ketoacidosis and lapsed into a coma and never recovered. Her parents let us pick out a song to play at her funeral so we picked "Sister" by The Nixons. Shauna was just one of my many friends that died way too young.

If you’ve seen a person with cat-like eyes or pupils shaped like keyholes, they are likely suffering from coloboma. This hereditary disease may affect one or both eyes and cause various symptoms, from light sensitivity to complete vision loss.

Coloboma can develop in various parts of the eye, from the iris to the lens, the retina, and the optic nerve. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the disease can begin as early as infancy and requires immediate evaluation.

However, like Marfan syndrome, coloboma has no cure. Ophthalmologists usually require their patients to wear colored contact lenses to make their irises appear rounder. They may also prescribe low-vision devices, like side shields for eyeglasses, to control light reflection.

hlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a genetic condition that affects your body's ability to produce collagen that supports your connective tissue. It can make your skin, joints and other tissue weaker and more flexible than they should be

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I had a friend with this. It manifests itself in different ways in different people. Not everyone gets the very loose skin like this. When we were growing up, we both did gymnastics and she was scary flexible and could do all the things I couldn't, like the splits. Into our thirties and she was diagnosed with EDS after all sorts of problems and needing a colostomy, and suddenly the flexibility as children all made sense. I'm glad now that I wasn't the flexible one. I feel sorry for her.

I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and it’s worth noting that there are at least a dozen different types. This lady has Dermatosparaxis EDS (dEDS), with saggy, redundant skin that is extremely fragile, and makes her somewhat of a unicorn as it’s a very, very rare type of EDS. I have the most common type of EDS; Hypermobile EDS (hEDS), however, I also have crossover symptoms of Vascular EDS (vEDS), which isn’t as common. I have very flexible joints that are prone to subluxations and full dislocations. My body is very stretchy, but I’m prone to soft tissue injuries. I have craniocervical instability as my neck is very weak and struggles to support my head, which puts pressure on my brainstem, cerebellum, and spinal cord. I have issues with my heart, and I’m highly at risk of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). I’m 33 and have a life expectancy of 50-55. I have three cousins who had a crossover of hEDS and vEDS; they all died of an AAA before the age of 50. It’s very scary for me.

My Vitiligo Is The Best Thing To Ever Happen To Me

My Vitiligo Is The Best Thing To Ever Happen To Me

My name is Alicia, and getting Vitiligo at a very young age was the best thing that ever happened to me. Everywhere I go, it allows me to stand out among a crowd. When I was little, maybe kids did not understand, but going through high school and beyond now, my peers absolutely adore it. It has only gotten better since I became an adult and moved to a big city. The world is different now.

I have vitiligo and I just find it annoying to have random white patches on my face and hands, especially in the summer when I get a bit of a tan. If only the damn things were symmetrical.

nothing in nature is perfectly symmetrical. it happens sometimes, but very rarely. and (in my opinion) i find the randomness of the patterns is part of the beauty of this condition. I don't have it myself so it might be easier for me to say that. but in all honesty, i think it's beautiful. then again, if the random pattern looks like a cöck and bälls, it might be a different story :)

Ocular Albinism Is A Genetic Condition That Primarily Affects The Eyes

This condition reduces the coloring (pigmentation) of the iris, which is the colored part of the eye, and the retina, which is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Pigmentation in the eye is essential for normal vision.

This eye is lighting up red because of something called retro illumination where the retina (which is red at the back of the eye) reflects the light. When you get red eye in a photo from the flash this happens too, but only through the pupil, the hole in your iris (the coloured part of the eye). People with albinism lack this iris pigment making their eyes blue or almost void of any pigment (blue eyes are a lack of pigment) and the light shining through the the front of the eye reflects back off the retina and through the back of the iris showing the fibres and muscles that open and close the pupil in varying light conditions.

Kind of along the same lines, my husband has these gorgeous blue/gray eyes and need sunglasses if it's just a little bit bright out. Our older daughter has the same eyes and also needs sunglasses. Myself and our younger daugher have the same hazel/green eyes and don't need sunglasses most of the time.

Blue/gray eyes are normal. Normally-pigmented eyes are not "along the same lines" as ocular albinism, which is a LACK of pigment in the iris and/or retina. Pigmentation in the eye is essential for normal vision. Your husband and daughter have sensitive eyes, but it's not even remotely "along the same lines" as ocular albinism.

Heterochromia is an eye-related disorder that could draw more amazement than concern. People stricken with this condition have different-colored irises, with the left eye being blue and the right eye being green. There is also central heterochromia, where the eye has a distinct inner ring of a different color from the outer iris.

For the most part, heterochromia has no other symptoms apart from differing iris colors. However, it could also be a byproduct of other conditions, such as Horner syndrome (eyelid drooping caused by disrupted nerve fibers connecting the brain to the eye) and Hirschsprung’s disease (caused by improperly developed intestinal nerve cells).

But because of its pleasantly peculiar nature, heterochromia is usually deemed “incredibly beautiful,” especially since many A-list celebrities share this condition. Some of the famous names with different-colored eyes include Mila Kunis, Kiefer Sutherland, Kate Bosworth, and Christopher Walken, to name a few.

I have this, too! It happens to both my fingers and toes! The toes are the worst and tend to get worse as temperatures get colder. My fingers, though, are worst between 40 - 60°F and seem to be fine at below freezing temps... it's like my circulation says, "Hey, looks like it might be warming up," relaxes, then says, "Nope, not warm enough yet!" (Kind of like groundhogs and shadows 😉). Going from an 80°F day into the freezer isle at a grocery store will trigger it too 🙄. If warmly dressed at the core and extremities, it's fine; put on warm socks or gloves with lightweight clothing and it doesn't fix s**t. Whole body warmth is the key!

"A coloboma is a hole in one of the structures of the eye, such as the iris, retina, choroid, or optic disc. The hole is present from birth and can be caused when a gap called the choroid fissure, which is present during early stages of prenatal development, fails to close up completely before a child is born." Colobomas can affect the person's vision, but not always.

You were likely amazed and freaked out at the same time when someone showed you how their thumb bends a full 90 degrees backward. Joint hypermobility syndrome, a.k.a double-jointedness, isn’t an unusual genetic condition. Still, there is more to it than meets the eye.

The National Library of Medicine noted that joint hypermobility syndrome could be a precursor to more serious conditions like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Like Marfan syndrome, it affects the body’s connective tissues and, in worst cases, ruptures blood vessels.

For the most part, double-jointed people do not experience any outright symptoms from their condition. However, pain and stiffness in the joints and muscles and constant dislocations may occur in more severe cases.

My Newborn Son Was Born With A Heart-Shaped Thumb

My Newborn Son Was Born With A Heart-Shaped Thumb

    sarahfoxy11 Report

These days, it isn’t uncommon to see people with patches on their skin that are a different color. This condition is called vitiligo, an auto-immune disorder where the body’s immune cells attack the melanocytes, the cells responsible for making skin pigment.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Skin Diseases, vitiligo may develop at any age. However, the discolored skin patches may begin to appear before the age of 20. In some cases, it starts to manifest in early childhood. People with other autoimmune diseases like psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis are also at risk of developing this condition.

Experts would usually disregard treatment options for vitiligo since it causes no further harm. However, since people with this condition are more prone to developing self-esteem issues, light therapy, depigmentation therapy, and surgery are potential solutions.

Similar to vitiligo, Albinism is a rare genetic disorder that affects skin pigment and causes discoloration. However, in this case, people suffer from a lack of melanin, a chemical responsible for producing hair, eye, and skin color.

According to published research, albinism occurs in one in every 3,000 people worldwide and affects all races and ethnic groups. Besides the overly pale skin, people with this condition suffer from vision problems, sensitivity to light, and rapid eye movement.

Albinism has no cure and increases the risk of skin cancer and sunburn. Dermatologists advise people with this disorder to minimize sun exposure, wear eye protection like sunglasses, and use sunscreen regularly.

Yes quite normal. Piezogenic pedal papules. Basically fat lumps that show when the foot is under pressure. Heavy stepping, being over weight, standing for long times are all associated with this benign condition.

Those are piezogenic papules - fat deposits under the skin. They’re caused by pressure. They’re usually not painful, and don’t need treatment, but they often disappear with the use of supportive footwear or insoles that properly distribute pressure.

I have one on my chest near my collar bone. So when I was in my teens and guys would try to be all macho and stuff I'd just tell them that I had a longer chest hair than them and show them if they actually wanted to see evidence. Lol. That would make the guys either go away or they would laugh and I'd make a new friend. 😂

Polydactyly Is The Condition Of Being Born With An Extra Finger Or Toe. Most Of The Time, The Extra Digit Is Smaller Than The Other Digits And Is Not Well-Formed

This is a fairly common condition that can run in families. Most often, the extra digit is present on only one hand or foot but can occur on both hands or both feet, and less commonly on all four extremities (as seen in this patient).

I might have this too. Or maybe it’s something different? My optometrist finally explained a couple of years ago, mine aren’t dark rings at all. It’s actually a portion of my irises that has no pigmentation whatsoever, so what we’re seeing is a clear window into my eyes. It doesn’t hurt or overly affect my vision, but it does result in light sensitivity; I wear sunglasses even on cloudy days.

Anisocoria is the condition of having different sized pupils, but it can mean you are having a stroke. I noticed one of our outdoor cats had this and took him to the vet who said the cat was in danger due to elevated heart rate because of allergies, he received a shot, I think steroids and was ok

Since we discussed melanin deficiencies throughout this article, here’s another one. Like heterochromia, poliosis can pass off as a visually appealing condition that may remind Marvel fans of Rogue from the X-Men.

In a nutshell, poliosis causes hair pigment to dilute, turning a dark color into a much lighter hue. Research published in the National Library of Medicine notes that it can also cause premature graying of the hair.

Generally, this disorder is not detrimental to one’s health, and people who deal with it can cover up their discolored hair patches with dyes. However, it can indicate other underlying issues like vitiligo and alopecia.

Not necessarily, they're a first line of defence against infections. When they swell they are doing their job - stopping what would've been a more debilitating infection. Just don't ignore them and get to a doctor when that happens.

A couple of decades ago, I had surgery for a deviated septum. The surgeon was an absolute a$$hole. Insisted my nose had been broken and that was why I suddenly developed “old person nasal drip”. He refused to accept that, to the best of my knowledge, I’d never had my nose broken and the drippy nose ONLY started a couple of weeks after I quit smoking. I’m convinced he was responsible for overriding the information I gave several times that I have skin sensitivity to detergents. When I woke up, post surgery, I was bloody from scratching in my sleep. I begged the nurses for antihistamines. They said they had to wait for his permission but it was his day off; I needed to be patient. I don’t have many fond memories of my ex-husband but he stormed in, that day, with over-the-counter antihistamines that allowed me to stop ripping my skin off. By the way, they stuff tampons up your nose to absorb blood from deviated septum surgery. When they pull the tampons out of your nose it feels like they are dragging the tampons across your brain. Don’t know how else to describe the sensation.

In mammals, including humans, there is a condition called polythelia, meaning "extra nipples" They can be hormonally active too. Usually their growth follows a line starting in the armpit and ending int the groin. But hey, nature is beautiful and tere have been numerous case reports with atypical growth sites. Also, I really hope the person gave their consent for the photo...

Yep, it's quite common too. Most of them just look like a little freckle or mole. Anyone reading this, imagine straight lines going down your torso from each nipple. (Like the nipples on a cat or dog.) If you see any freckles or moles along those 'lines', they very well could be "third nipples."

Orthopaedic surgeon here - for anybody who might be interested, this is usually due to an abnormally high forward orientation (the technical term is antetorsion) of the femoral neck, increasing internal rotation of the hip. It is not pathological at all, usually causes no problems.

This is what happens to my feet when I have a CRPS flare up. Sometimes when it's a bad flare up my toes will turn nearly black. However if this person hasn't had an injury or surgery then they definitely need to be seen. It's very rare for someone to develop CRPS without an injury but it can happen and discoloration like this accompanied with extreme burning pain is a couple of signs of CRPS.

These may be considered ‘rare’ conditions, but they are more prevalent in certain parts of the world. According to a 2023 report by The Guardian, around 5,500 people have been diagnosed with genetic disorders in the UK and Ireland.

Further studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine reveal that ‘spontaneous mutations’ that weren’t inherited from parents caused three-quarters of these conditions. But as University of Cambridge professor of human genetics Matthew Hurles told the Guardian, patients can benefit from continuous advancements in research.

“As these genomic technologies move into routine healthcare, ensuring that undiagnosed patients can still benefit from research on their data will remain incredibly important.”

I couldn't even bend my wrist. Orthopedics couldn't find it on CT, I pointed it out. Had surgery, minimal scars. It's been 17 years and I've had no issues with my wrist since. One of the best surgery choices I made. The other was tendon release surgery on my wrist (other hand) due to reoccurring DeQuervains synovitis.

    AnkleByter

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

A lot of people can create this particular "bubble" by clasping their hands(one vertical, one horizontal) and using the top hand to push in and down on the bottom hand towards that hand's wrist. You can push on it and it will go away (assuming it stays when you let go of your hands in the first place). Although people automatically assume it's a ganglion cyst, that's not true, lol. A ganglion cyst doesn't tend to disappear when you push it, or aren't trying to actively create it. You're literally just pushing air and/or fluid into a small pocket. It's not harmful, it's not painful and it's not a cyst. Not everyone can do it, but it's not uncommon, and the size of the "bubble" can vary greatly. I can make a really big one on one wrist, but only a tiny one on the other. I used to do it in front of people as a kid and freak them out (when you touch them, they feel a little weird and it can freak squeamish people out, lol)

This may freak out millennials and younger. I still have a callous on my right hand middle finger from holding pens and pencils. The nail bed and nail is warped, and that will never go away. I rarely write on paper with pen or pencil anymore. Haven’t for years. But the physical evidence that I lived before the internet was a thing, remains.

This often has more to do with some kind of deficiency in your diet. When I eat better, mine stop doing this. When I eat like vitamins don't matter, it starts doing this again. It can be an indicator of other underlying health issues too (especially cardiovascular), but more often than not it's a multi-vitamin deficiency. Some will automatically assume a biotin deficiency, but that's not the only vitamin you need for healthy nails.

This is called spoon nails. It's a sign of someone with lung issues. Usually asthma.

Spoon nails go the other way, they don't curl downward at the end. They have a dip in them, usually near the center but not always perfectly centered. (that's where they get the name, they look like spoons and can hold a drop of water)

Mine do this because I used to chew my nails really bad. Took years and years of not chewing for them to start growing normally.

Uh, that's not "unusual" genetics. That's normal genetics XD That's how recessive genes work.

It's the little white mouse in the corner of the square in the biology books. Eyecolor is regulated by 16 genes, though, so it's more complicated than people think.

It's only two blue eyed parents that can't have brown eyed children.

No. That isn't true. Two blue-eyed parents CAN have a brown-eyed child. It's rare, but it's possible. Eye color isn't determined by "one" gene. Eye color is NOT a simple genetic trait, and blue eyes are not determined by a recessive allele at one gene. Instead, eye color is determined by variation at several different genes and the interactions between them, and this makes it possible for two blue-eyed parents to have brown-eyed children.

Most likely caused by creating friction with your wet hands. Don’t worry it very normal and common.
