Many people don’t get the hype of collecting items. For them, they’re just more things to dust off at home on chore day. But for people who find themselves hooked on the activity, it becomes a game that rarely has an end.

Of course, when it’s a series of cards you’re collecting, for instance, or a certain group of objects, it is possible to complete the collection. But if it’s something like rubber ducks, toys, or seashells that you’re holding on to, be ready to expand your dwelling as there might be no end in sight.

I think it's because it will cost time and money to make beautiful things and the companies who makes them just want to have more things out on the market without having to spend more time and money than what is absolutely necessary. That's my theory. It's not really thought through or anything. But there it is.

Discussing why we tend to collect items—be it a series or an endless collection—neuroscientist and psychologist Daniel Krawczyk suggested that our brains are wired to collect things. In his TEDx Talk, the expert in neuroscience, an avid collector himself, pointed out that there’s a link between why we collect and value things and how the human brain functions.

Interestingly, humans are not the only species that tend to collect all sorts of items influenced by the bizarre wiring of our brain. According to the neuroscientist, other species, such as the pack rat or the mag pie, do, too!

In his talk, Krawczyk noted that when it comes to us humans, the first collectors were probably our hunter-gatherer ancestors. For them, it would have been critical to their survival, so they would collect and save food for a rainy day, or hold on to useful tools that were likely to come in handy later on.

Moving on to talk about collecting more as a hobby rather than a means of survival, Krawczyk suggested that there are numerous reasons to engage in this kind of leisurely activity.

Take art collectors, for example; the neuroscientist noted that part of art is communication between the artist and the viewer, so someone keeping a collection and showcasing it allows viewers to re-experience certain emotions when marveling at the collected items.

Collectables can also become a great business venture, especially with kids as the target audience. Whether it’s G.I. Joe figurines, Cabbage Patch dolls, or other items, children are known for wanting to collect them all. “Some of the most successful toy lines have capitalized on this idea – ‘If you have one, [...] there’s all these other ones, and wouldn’t it be great to get these?’” Krawczyk said in his talk.

At the time of Krawczyk’s TEDTalk in 2016, the card was valued at $2.8 million during its last trade. According to Yahoo! Finance, a copy of the card was sold for a record $6.6 million in 2021, only to beat that record and reach $7.25 million just one year later.

If you think that that particular Honus Wagner card was covered in gold dust or was special in some other way, you might be surprised to learn that it was far from the only collectible of its kind to be sold for millions of dollars decades after its production. According to CBC, a different Honus Wagner card was sold for $3.25 million, while a Mickey Mantle card from 1952 was sold for an astonishing $5.8 million, all of which goes to show that some collectibles can indeed become great investments over time.

If you’re thinking that your collection of porcelain dishes or toy figurines won’t bring you a fortune down the line, don’t be so sure; baseball cards, too, were once not much more than a piece of cardboard. But whether or not the monetary value increases over time, the sentimental value ought to, especially as the collection grows.

So, if you’ve already started a collection of some kind, keep up the good work—and if you’re still not sure if you should start collecting something, just look at the cool assortment on this list! Surely there is something that would be fun to have loads of, isn’t there?

You can just buy this exact set off a website called Monofigs. They come at about 500$ for the base 36 pieces set, plus 70$ for each additional figurine. Apart that the price is INSANE, they declare to use original LEGO pieces but have colors that are not in the normal LEGO lineup, so it feels quite sketchy to me.

When visiting the €-using countries in the EU it would make mire sense to collect now the 1 & 2 € coins - as those can be linked to the countries (on top there are also lots of special mintigs of countrie specific sights/events). Adding to the fun, you as well might receive a Portuguese €-coin when being in Finland.

    UKGrandad

The brightness is down to the amount of uranium in the glass, which can be anywhere from 1%-25% of the metal (the molten glass). The blue ones contain cobalt in varying amounts.

Adventure Time is an animated program that I used to watch on cartoon Network just guessing around 2010 give or take? You can look it up as to when it ran. One of the voice actors, a main character Jake the dog, was the same voice as Bender from Futurama, which always made me smile cuz I also like that program as well. It was a really wild show, very short episodes about 7 minutes long, about a post-apocalyptic world with talking animals, sentient donuts, wizard, vampire, a talking dog and his boy named Finn. (There was also an alternate dimension where most of the main characters had a opposite gender version of themselves) These are incredibly well done. They look just like the characters.

I sort of fear four leaf clovers. When I was 10 we were having a family day out at a local forest and I found one. I was excited about it, showed it to mum and dad all happy about the good luck to come. Two days later my dad died. To me they became about bad luck. I don't want to ever see one again. Logically I know the two things - finding the thing and my daddy dying - were unrelated but the sort of fear thing never really went away so I avoid chance encounters.

"A cloverplant that already has a clover with an abnormal number of leaflets has a higher chance of growing or having another abnormal clover than a cloverplant that doesn't have any." So finding one is exciting, but I think the excitement dissipates when you find successive ones at the same time.

Nope, but the collection is quite eclectic. There's a NATO flag, a California flag, apparently two German city state flags (Hamburg and Bremen), a pirate flag (or possibly football club FC St. Pauli) plus another one I looked up because I was curious. Apparently it's an old (pre 1994) flag of South Africa.

I see a lot of owl feathers! I used to collect feathers as a kid and have feathers of over 50 different birds. My favourite ones are the macaw feathers. They’re usually one colour on the front and another colour at the back. (Check blue and yellow macaw feathers in Google images). Biggest feather I have in my collection is about 1.5 meters (59 inches) in length and belongs to an Argus pheasant (a tail feather). They’re all individually packed in plastic to prevent any damage and to keep out insects. I don’t collect anymore but if I find a pretty feather outside I can’t help but collect it!

Uhhh feathers can’t be collected by individuals in the U.S unless you are Native American or if the feathers are from hunted birds. So I hope that applies or you are not in the U.S.
