The government urges residents not to venture outside. Authorities warn against using public transport. Dozens of schools shut their doors, and hospitals cancel nonessential procedures. No, this is not an introduction to a dystopian novel. It’s Britons sweltering under scorching weather as record-breaking temperatures soar this week. The Met Office, the national meteorological service for the UK, has issued the first-ever red warning for exceptional heat because temperatures of 40 C (or 104 F) have been forecast for the very first time.
If you have always lived in hotter climates, you might be laughing at these numbers. We get it! But remember, we’re talking about a country that’s unaccustomed to such sizzling temperatures. Given how the UK is notorious for awful weather, there is always plenty of reaction from its citizens whenever they find themselves nearly melting from the heat.
So the nation did what it does best: laughed through the climate crisis with the help of funny memes and tweets. We at Bored Panda have gathered some hilariously British reactions that sum up this latest heatwave, so grab a cold drink, blast the AC, and scroll down to enjoy this list. Thank you for this. I feel like a social pariah for loving Winter and hating Summer.
I'm with you. Always hated summer. Sunburns, swamp a s s, hot cars and people that should put more clothes on because I don't want to see that. It's just exhausting. Give me fall, winter, spring, we can skip over this hellish season. sun-hate-6...1de02e.jpg
I do love the summer, up to about +25C; and I do love the winter, down to about -25C.
My dream is to go to the North sea in winter and enjoy beach covered with snow.
I hate summer I'm a winter girl aswell my family think I'm mad lol but getting dark early so I can put my lamps on with the fire all cosy in fluffy clothes and blankets and Christmas aswell god I just love winter
SAME!!! I absolutely HATE hot weather. Anything over 70F/20C is too hot for me.
I hate summer, only because of temperature. It's hot, you can't walk on the street, without sweating like a pig and if you work in building without air conditioning, it's hell. I can't sleep at night already, and new and worse heatwave is expected in few days.
Yes.. TFL (Transport for London) often post messages that are either funny or quotes or messages of support.. Used to make me smile when I travelled to work.. :)
Load More Replies...I love that TFL do this. Life is waaay too serious in other places.
There are always funny signs on the underground. All to lift the the awful drudgery of daily life.
I mean, some of those people already smell like prawns that had been around the block, way before the heatwave started!
This looks like it's from Denmark (Copenhagen) rather than the UK - but the message is important. Thankfully in the UK most big cities are fairly green - but we can always do with more trees, especially drought-resistant ones!
And the tree lined street is actually in Shanghai.
Load More Replies...you can do this and have lots of cars. My home city (Joburg, SA) has vast numbers of trees and millions of cars. The trees keep our daytime temp around 25-35 in summer even if the surrounding veld is closer to 40.
This is so true, and yet more and more Polish cities become concrete jungles :(
I wish my city would pay attention to this. I live in Fresno California and it's going to be 39°c to 42°c for the next month.
Hopefully, they will! I remember reading about an urban planner using Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada as an excellent example of how to blend in trees with buildings.
Load More Replies...Living in a country well known for its rainy climate, many Brits never even had to think about getting air conditioning or putting more effort into protecting their homes from the scorching heat. But right now, they’re struggling. The UK is set to see its hottest day on record, with temperatures on Tuesday expected to reach up to 42 C (107.6 F), the BBC reported. On Monday, Wales already broke temperatures for its hottest day on record with 37.1 C. A high of 38.1 C was reached in Suffolk, making it the hottest day of the year so far, but not the highest temperature ever recorded — just short of the UK record of 38.7 C, which happened only three years ago.
I think this is both beautiful and effective! I am in Australia and would like it if they had things like this!
Or if you do take them out irresponsibily in that scorching heat, make sure to also go out blanketed and barefoot with firecrackers between your toes.
Yep. This is so avoidable. I take my dogs out first thing in the morning and last thing at night and the temperature is perfectly fine then - it was 25 C at 8am today and I'm in one of the hotter parts of the UK today (but not the hottest). I always check by touching the ground and am lucky to have shaded routes anyway (and I carry water!).
Load More Replies...Wow. That's horrible. I'm fortunate that I have a backyard and can let my boys out with no worries of needing walks on scorching pavement. This is why those ridiculous dog socks and shoes are necessary. Sure they hate it and it looks stupid but it saves their paws. This poor baby
Come on humans, use just a little common sense. Take off your flip-flops and experience what these poor animals endure
Imagine being forced to walk on hot pavements in bare feet while wearing a fur coat. So thoughtless.
Sometimes people legitimately don't put 2 and 2 together. Especially if you always wear shoes outside, you don't think about the scalding heat of the pavement. Unfortunately, I saw this often when I was still practicing. It would really upset me, but you could also tell that the family just didn't think, or honestly didn't realize. The OP seems very remorseful, and I don't think they did it maliciously.
Load More Replies...I took mine out for a wee earlier, and he thought we were going for a walk... he literally lay on the floor and refused to come inside... I wish I could explain to him that this post is what will happen to him if we go walk
Larger/active dogs need their walkies. I took the lab/border out just after sunrise for a 1 hour plus stroll, with some off leash because there was nobody else around. It was amazing. Parks, gardens, and even city streets smell and feel so different in the early am.
Beach K-9's are now wearing booties to prevent burns., at least in parts of Florida.

How does one ensure that they are dismantling the fossil fuel industry whilst enjoying ice cream? Usually fossil fuels of some kind have been used to chill it. No judgment. Just a funny thought to me on the all or nothing sentiment conveyed in the semantics here.
Loose is good, long enough to prevent sunburn when you're outside is good too.
The Met Office has released the first-ever red weather warning for the soaring temperatures covering much of central, northern, and southeast England. It stated that there will be "an exceptional hot spell on Monday and Tuesday leading to widespread impacts on people and infrastructure." Temperatures are expected to drop from Wednesday, but the meteorological service warned residents that since then, there is a potential risk of serious illness or even danger to life, so it’s advised to keep safe during the extreme summer heat.
My advice for people newly dealing with this hot, humid weather: Buy one of those cheap, plastic kiddie pools, put it in the shade and fill it with water for your dogs and any other animal that needs it.
And put up a patio umbrella or a tarp to keep it in the shade.

Have they opened cooling centers for the homeless or other vulnerable populations?
I'm sorry, but I think this is ridiculous. Having to stand in this horrible heat while wearing the full uniform? Come on.

The notice came after the UK Health Security Agency increased its heat-health warning from level three to level four — which constitutes a national emergency. "This is the first time we have issued a Red National Severe Weather Warning for extreme heat and the first time 40°C has been forecast in the UK. In this country, we’re used to treating a hot spell as a chance to go and play in the sun. This is not that sort of weather," Professor Penny Endersby, Chief Executive at the Met Office, said.
"We have seen when climate change has driven such unprecedented severe weather events around the world that it can be difficult for us to make the best decisions because nothing in our life experiences has led us to know what to expect," Endersby added.
We'll never stop climate change while the mega-rich continue to have their d**k measuring contest, by sending rockets into orbit. (Looking at you Musk and Bezos.) 👀
And sadly some idiotic people will still deny that climate change is real.
Of course, because mega-corps and orange politicians assure them that climate change isn't real. Surely they wouldn't lie out of greedy self interest? (Sarcasm sign)

Eukaryotes, that is multi-cellular life and a lot of the single cells too, can at the maximum sustain temperatures of 60-62C. Go above that, and it's death to a lot of the decomposers - who would otherwise have a lot to decompose, since pretty much everything else dies too.

Some people don't seem to realize that the pavement can be MUCH hotter than the air. In some places, the ground can be 80°C (177°F)
Is this maybe different from location to loaction? I keep checkign road surfaces with my hand and only that black tar that is put on for a short while during contruction gets really hot. The rest is warm, but not nearly hot enough to burn someone.
Any one who does this should have to walk 1km on the beach at midday with bare feet as punishment.
I think this graph is showing the difference in temperature between the two periods, rather than the actual temperature itself, which is why some people think it's fake e.g. "how can Antartica be hotter than the equator?" It's not, but the temperature increase is higher than at the equator, which is definitely a possibility. Maybe I'm mistaken, but either way, the info in the graph could be clearer
I think it is the difference of the weather at that point I time compared to the long term average on the same date.
Load More Replies...For context, in the UK 1976 is remembered as a famously hot summer. But as the map shows, that was just a local bit of freak weather, whereas what's happening now is global
Yes, and a lot of the older generation are going 'well we survived '76 so stop being so panicky about the weather' - this graph is a response to that.
Load More Replies...This maps both show that years difference to the average temperature from 1951-1980. So in June '76 there are some warmer areas, a few hot spots, but also a lot of colder areas than the average temperature in June. This year, as you can see, has not a lot of colder areas but a helluva lot of damn hot ones. Especially Antarctica is much warmer than it was in average.
I remember those days in 1976. We didn't even have an air conditioner!
Don't bother. People who don't WANT to believe that their future looks grimm, won't accept any facts, no matter how clearly you present them.
I remember my parents talking about the very hot summer of 1976. I guess I can see how it was back then, and also how it was nothing compared to what's happening now.
It clearly says "Anomaly vs 1951-1980" at the top, meaning the picture shows the deviations from average temperatures. No rubbish afterall.
Load More Replies...The UK Health Security Agency shared a few tips about how to stay safe in the sizzling weather:
- look out for those who may struggle to keep themselves cool and hydrated – older people, those with underlying conditions, and those who live alone are particularly at risk
- stay cool indoors by closing curtains on rooms that face the sun
- drink plenty of fluids and avoid excess alcohol
- never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children, or animals
- try to keep out of the sun between 11 AM to 3 PM, when the UV rays are strongest
- if you have to go out in the heat, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat
- avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day
- take care and make sure to follow local safety advice if you are going into the water to cool down
Yes, please do this but put it in a shady spot. Sun will cause it to get too hot for comfort quickly.
Yup, I have a big flat bowl that I fill every day for the creatures, leave it in the shade. I feed the birds anyway, but this is my hot weather system so they can bathe and drink, especially when there's been no rain.
I did this when I lived in a campground, moved to an apartment complex with security doors and can't water the outdoor wild babies.
Just be careful of snakes.🐍They will also come for the water...and the critters. If your water bowl is in a shady area, mind your hands if you are reaching to pick it up.
You can leave bowls of water for the insects as well, just put a rock or some kind of grass ramp so they won't drown. Bugs need water to and it doesn't hurt anyone to leave a small container of water somewhere for them. It doesn't have to be close to your house.

Thank goodness my school never had that as a rule, and by the time I was in my second year, we had short sleeved polo shirts we could wear if we didn't want to wear a dress.
Our local school has been allowing students to wear their much cooler sports kit for the last few days
While there are a few different elements at play driving the ferocious heatwave across western Europe, a high-pressure system called the Azores High is to blame for the hot temperatures. Usually sitting off Spain, it grew larger and pushed to the north, bringing scorching weather to the UK, France, and the Iberian peninsula. As Brits endure what could be the hottest day in their nation’s history, the conversation inevitably turns to climate change.
It's fluffing 40C now, and 29C indoors during the night!!! I'm from a tropical country and never seen anything like this or felt so hot. No rain but humid as hell. It's really unbearable
Load More Replies...To anybody saying that they deal with 30°C everyday and to suck it up, please kindly note that many people in the United Kingdom are not used to this extreme heat and our infrastructure is not set up to deal with these extremely high temperatures. Many people do not have central air let alone indoor air conditioning systems. Sadly, many older people and younger people are highly susceptible to heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion can be a silent killer for many older people who don't have air conditioning. Not everyone is fortunate enough to live by the seaside to escape the heat.
I live in a hot country, but everything is geared toward coping with the heat. I imagine that the Brits feel like we would if it suddenly snowed here.
What many don't realize is that most of those places have air-conditioning....we don't have that in most northern European countries...so when it gets hot, it's hot and no way to cool down.
And our buildings are designed to keep heat in.
Load More Replies...Many people don't understand the difference of hot weather between higher and lower latitudes. I come from a country by the equator and 30 degrees there only lasts a few hours as there's not much difference between daytime and nighttime, even in summer. I live in Northern Europe now and 30 degrees lasts many hours due to long daytime. Imagine your home exposed to scorching sun for 8-10 hours straights. Every place becomes a sauna. Cooling down after sunset takes much longer too. It's a totally different experience.
In Australia. We are having one of the coldest winters in decades. We are being riddled with articles about why Australian houses are as useless as a tent in the winter and how to reduce our heating bills.
We don't have AC, our houses are designed to keep the heat in, we don't have this sort of heat all of the time, we don't have a chance to get used to it. This is madness for us, we are melting.
I'm so sorry for you. I really wish there was something I could do. I live someplace where I'm used to it and we're equipped for it and it's still almost unbearable. To have to deal with it without the necessary equipment seems unfathomable. But it is, please stay inside as much as possible, stay hydrated, and try to keep a damp cloth on the back of your neck. It will help cool down your body temperature. If you're inside, please keep reapplying cool water and cloth as soon as the one in your neck gets warm. Take care of yourself. Wishing relief soon

Load More Replies...I hate to admit it, but my body is too used to long winters and short(er) blazing summers with ugly humidity. I grabbed a mid range (about 80 dollars) tower fan off of amazon. That thing pumps cold air from our living room where the window unit is, all the way to the bedroom. If possible, grab a window unit and get a little makeshift with it.
Many portable AC units have a significant design drawback, in that they blow indoor air across the condenser coil and exhaust that air outside, thereby drawing warm are into the room from somewhere else. The much more expensive dual-hose models solve this problem, but still aren't great as the device itself is still producing radiant heat inside the room. A window-mount unit would do a much better job.

"The chances of seeing 40°C days in the UK could be as much as 10 times more likely in the current climate than under a natural climate unaffected by human influence. The likelihood of exceeding 40°C anywhere in the UK in a given year has also been rapidly increasing, and, even with current pledges on emissions reductions, such extremes could be taking place every 15 years in the climate of 2100."

In the UK, the seven hottest days have come since 2000, revealing an alarming pattern that affects nearly every citizen’s life. According to Professor Hannah Cloke, a natural hazards researcher at the University of Reading, this heatwave and the new red-level warning is a "wake-up call about the climate emergency."
"We have had heatwaves in the UK before, but the intensity of heat that has been forecast, which will either break UK records or at least get very close, is enough to kill people and animals, damage property, and hobble the economy," she said in a statement shared by the university.
"Even as a climate scientist who studies this stuff, this is scary," Cloke added. "This feels real. At the start of the week, I was worried about my goldfish getting too hot. Now I'm worried about the survival of my family and my neighbors."
During our similar heat wave last summer (high of 108 F) all you had to turn on for a shower was the COLD water tap. The water was plenty warm from the ambient heat, almost hot even.
I’m from the UK but currently live in the Middle East with temperatures in the mid to high 40’s every day. Water from the cold tap is hot for 8 months of the year. I can only shower before the sun comes up because the rest of the day the water is scalding. Clothes shrink on a cold wash. I have to brush my teeth with bottled water from the fridge. My dog has to have ice cubes in her water bowl. You get used to it eventually but cold showers are a much wished for luxury.

And everywhere in the U.K. Why is it hot in a place that's mostly cold? WHY?We don't like this weather. The weather needs to change. We want our cloudy and rainy days back.
There's never an in-between in the UK. It's either too cold or rip your skin off hot

I'm in the US and 100F degree days are normal here and now, but damn I hate it. My AC has been running almost 24/7. My electric bill is going to be insane.
They don't have ac in the uk. Can only imagine what they're doing to cool down.
Load More Replies...Absolutely agree! No good burying your head in the sand, it will just bloody burn off.
Yes and isn't it interesting how the people that accuse others of scarongering are usually the ones with privileged lives.
Meanwhile, I was wearing five layers and crying every single day, while my English classmates were coming to school with wet hair, a t-shirt and deep blue legs. 😂 it's just a matter of what you are used to.
I'm at the seaside right now, the ocean is getting warmer, sharks are moving to new areas, great white spotted in Norway the other day, so no, Jaws can wait for now or this holiday would be a waste of time and money.
As imagined by Salvador Dali: "The Persistence of Memory of small boats"
A lot of dogs live in areas where it gets above 20-25°C regularly. I can't imagine they all are prone to just drop down half-dead all the time. Or am I missing something?
People live in areas with hurricanes, that doesn't mean they enjoy them. Grew up with five months of summer, but my dog certainly didn't go on long walks in the heat. Early morning and quick pee breaks during the day. Weekends at least near a body of water and in the shade.

According to this map, the only thing needed is for us to move to the blue area. Problem solved.
The blue area is going to move to us if we don't change!

Ah, God bless the Outer Hebrides where you can still wear your local Harris Tweet coat.
I love how forecasters sometimes sound so happy. "It's going to be a beautiful hot af sunny day. Not a cloud in the sky for shade, trees on fire, but at least it's so beautiful!"...
Australia had a problem a couple of years ago where their color-spectrum for air temperature didn't go high enough, and some areas of the continent went black due to overrunning the scale.
I mean the increase in storms, tornados, floods, etc are also a result of our planet being on fire (aka global warming)... So issue a health warning and do something about it (people's healths important too, cause a lot of people die from heat stroke)
Close the windows on the sunny side of the house. Open the curtains on the shady side of the house. You need the airflow that the curtains are blocking.
Load More Replies...I think it's currently cooler in Hell, than it is in the UK right now. 🤔
Well, Google says the high in London today was 108F. It's currently 96 in Bakersfield, California. So... yep.
Load More Replies...All thus advice is useful. But the biggest advice is change our lifestyles, stop abusing the planet or burn to death.
I was on the last flight from London Luton yesterday to Ireland because the runway melted. Weird take off. I'm much happier in the 18c in the west coast of Ireland
I was on the first flight out after they repaired it. We were sat in the plane for a couple of hours right near the runway as we were due to take off just as they closed the runway. Now in Crete with a pool and a/c!
Load More Replies...No it doesn't. What are we just supposed to tough up, not change and incinerate the planet ?
Brit here facing 38°/39° heat today. It is hell. My poor dog is going crazy because he hasn't been able to go on walks in days (he's a collie and those high exercise needs have never been more obvious). Airport runways have melted. The air is still and, when it's not, the breeze is warm. I'm lucky; I've finished school and can stay in the house all day. I can only feel great pity for the poor bastards who have to go outside and on buses/in trains/in cars. To my fellow heatwave suffers, please stay inside when possible (trust me, it IS cooler inside, even if it's not much) and remember to drink lots <3
I am sooo glad I took time off this week. The long walk/off leash times are in the early morning. Noon it's only 5 minutes to get all that water he drinks out of him. If your digs have trouble drinking try cucumber or ice cubes with some flavouring (I use Leberwurst).Indoor search games are great to keep working breeds occupied.
Load More Replies...Seems like the Brit infrastructure can only cope with one weather type: mild. When in the UK, in the summer I had a train cancelled because it was too hot. In autumn, because there were leaves on the line. In winter, because it was too cold. In Spring, ... Actually, the trains I got were fine in spring 😆
We don’t do anything that can be categorised outside of ‘normal’. We can’t even say that we struggle with extreme, these temperatures are far from extreme but we are way outside of our comfort zone right now. I’m sat in my very old house with 12”+ thick stone walls and it’s cool and calm, I shall be here observing the chaos and watching roads outside melt with a smug smile on my face, a/c? Pffff get herself a house built in 1700s 😀

I'm absolutely not accustomed to 30°C and less so to 40. We reached 40°C today for the first time since temperature recordings (this is in northern Germany). I'm glad I could stay inside all day and also that it's supposed to be much cooler tomorrow. No one here has AC in their homes, so we're all melting like wax.
Load More Replies...During last year's heatwave, the coldest place in my apartment was the sauna. It's furthest inside of the building, so it didn't heat up as quickly. It was off, of course.
How about we build a pipe from NZ to UK to swap air? We'll send 6° air in exchange for 40° from UK and average out at 23°.
Please send some to Germany, too. We hit 40°C here also. My feelgood temperature is around 18C, I gladly swap all air ant take your 6.
Load More Replies...So, I'm Italian. Live in the north east, very humid summers. In these past years, also very, very hot. 37°C today, and it is not the worst we've seen. I can't get accustomed to this, so I understand the English and Welsh. My question is: do you think/have knowledge of a "genetic resistance" to heat? Is it possible that my intolerance to heat is due to genetic/heritage traits?
Short answer, from an MD: Yes. Genes are linked to heat resistance in plants, humans, etc., and to tolerance of heat due to both genes and acclimation, usually doing the acclimation over time in lower/higher temps. For example, if you exercise 1 minute a day in excess heat today, and build up to 2 minutes in 2 days, 3 minutes in 4 days, etc., (Or cold.) However, I've lived in the US South 20-plus years and have not acclimated, no matter what, whereas my hubby never acclimated to the cold of my home region, so.... We may not all have the genetic ability to "shift" tolerance with exposure. ---- Signed, a medical doctor who still thinks 31*C is too hot, and is happiest around, oh, 3*C. Married to a guy who thinks 34*C is just fine, humidity is no issue, and gets too cold at 15*C.

Some tips to keep cool from AZ where we have had 116 F (46 C) for the past few weeks. Shade is your friend, take dishcloth and soak it. Use it on the back of your neck (just let it hang there if possible), lots of water, cool clothes like cotton and linen (anything loose and breathes), leave water out for birds, bugs, and animals, an ice block behind a fan, rinse your hands, face, neck, behind your ears, often. And stay indoors when possible.
The wet cloth in the neck is a good tip! Tested by me, already sweating at 25°C (77°F) 😄
