What do football, iPhone and Harry Potter have in common? At first glance, nothing, but if you think about it - each has a colossal army of loyal fans who devote a lot of time to their favorite thing, know everything or almost everything about even the smallest details, and, most importantly, are ready to die on this hill for their beliefs.

In other words, the same characteristics that religion had for the vast majority of mankind just a couple of hundred years ago. Remember the Crusades, religious wars and other "charms" of the Middle Ages? Yes, now religious fanaticism has significantly decreased, but worship of new idols has definitely taken its place.

This was also noticed by the topic starter of one of the threads in the AskReddit community, who just a few days ago asked the question: "What is not a religion, but people treat it with the same attention?" And so, as of today, the thread already has over 34.8K upvotes and around 27.7K different and sometimes extremely pathetic comments.

Bored Panda made a list for you that includes the most interesting and popular elements of the original thread. Sports and brands, music legends and internet traditions - all that make people worship them so devotedly. So feel free to scroll to the very end (literally everything is interesting there!), mark what you definitely agree with and, of course, don't forget to write your point of view straight in the comments!

Electric cars are still better when that's the case. My own city is choking to death on ozone from car exhaust. But yes, if you have an electric car and solar panels you're ahead of the game.

“What Is Not A Religion, But People Treat It With The Same Attention?” (30 Answers) The way Americans talk about their constitution is very reminiscent of religion. They worship it, but they haven't read it in a long time. Maybe never. They insist that you should respect it, even if you're not a member of the cult. They tend to assume that a justification for every opinion they have is in there somewhere. They treat the men who wrote it as if they're prophets. They can become sullen, withdrawn, or even hostile when you say it's wrong and requires serious alteration.

I live in the south. I see it every day. Trucks with huge trump and american flags flying off then back playing loud annoying redneck music. There is a church on every corner with a big American and lots of times confederate flags flying. Since the day trump was elected I have felt like the flag makes me uncomfortable. Honestly, I never thought about it until then. But now my eyes are wide open.

i can agree with some of this. i haven't heard of a person thinking the founding fathers were prophetsl if there is fault to be found it is probably the fact that the educational system that is available today didn't teach civics like it was taught when i was in school. being an old fart now i would have to refer to the document for confirmation on some things. the most i ever hear from people is claiming their right to free speech and right to bear arms without knowing the purpose of those rights or their origins.

Pt. III - Do I fly our national flag? Yes, I’m proud of my home and the opportunities it’s afforded me; I used to fly the Gadsden Flag until is was high-jacked by people who don’t understand its true meaning...unfortunately similar to the swastika that traces its roots to Native American and Indian traditions/symbolism. Constitution? I think it’s pretty cool...and dynamically adapted to changing times. Do I know it by heart? Admittedly not...but that doesn’t dismiss my respect for it. Everyone else respect it? That’s not for me to demand or decide... but it does govern our highest levels of government and lays the foundation for many of the mechanisms for how our country works.

Pt. IV - Prophets? Don’t think so, but I’d say it’s fair to say our Founding Fathers and original authors/signers had a level of foresight to anticipate that times, conditions, relevancy would change over time and enabled the ability to modify it as its citizenry deem necessary. Yes, I would agree it could use some tweaks. However it’s also worth pointing out such adjustments take time...by design. It’s not structured to be impulsive, but rather to elicit the overwhelming majority (through multiple measures of adoption) of its citizenry to agree to any changes over time.

Or they e never read it and can't tell the difference between the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence and they only know 2-3 rights from the Bill of Rights. Most of these types couldn't even pass the citizenship test.

I, as an adult, am up to date on every vaccine. Not many adults are. So I think it's safe to say that I'm not "anto-vax". But I also don't have any covid vaccines, because the long term effects are unknown, I had a super mild Rona infection before the vaccine existed and natural immunity is a thing, and I'm not agreeing to an experimental drug that doesn't even stop people from contracting or spreading the virus it's supposed to.

The word fan comes from "fanatic." There are some people who really do become fanatics. Being a fan is fun. We all have actors, singers, athletes we admire. But it can very easily get out of hand. People lose perspective very easily.

8 hours a day work culture is a scam. That's an hour getting up/ ready, an hour travelling, an hour unpaid lunch, an hour winding down, another hour eating dinner/ chores, suddenly that makes it 13 hours. AT LEAST No time to do ANYTHING but sleep

Yep, I'm a team leader and let my team make sudden arrangements around their kids, hell be late 10 minutes if you like. You'd think this would result in less productivity but it really doesn't - they work very hard, always make up their time, and they know they can just relax and won't have a boss who will breath down their neck if life happens

Right. A colleague of mine invited me over for dinner so she and her husband can talk to me about an "opportunity". Big red flag flopping in the breeze. I asked what sort of opportunity. She said "We can't tell you until you get here." Red flug bursts into flame with streaming rockets and sparklers. I gave her a polite, but definitive Nope. Like most rejected cultists, she stopped speaking to me, even though previously she could barely do her job without my help. So, I guess, yes, it was an opportunity for me.

It's only when you think about the concept of 'gender' in language that you realise what it does. Using 'her' or him' to relate a story is simply telling you the person has a certain set of genitalia. If that's relevant to the story, fine. But it rarely is. Why did we ever need these words anyway??

To me, at least, using he vs. she allows me to identify a character without having to name them at least some of the time. (e.g. "Sarah and Paul walked into the resteraunt. She pulled out his chair for him.") It won't clear matters up 100% of the time, but it can simplify things. (You'd probably see the same sentence differently if it was "Sarah and Paul walked into the restaurant. They pulled out their chair for them.")

I want to visit all the parks at some point, I own a good chunk of merchandise, etc. However, I would never make my hobby my identity. Plain and simple. I don't want to get married at Disney, I don't want to deck my house/ wardrobe in Disney junk, or any other nonsense. It's a hobby, not who I am and too many people choose to make a brand their entire personality.

This is a funny one because it started decades (yes I said decades) ago as just something bored programmers would do for fun. It wasn't meant to blow up like this at all. When it started they were worth nothing more than monopoly money because it really was just an underground game. Weird how something that people who would get bullied for doing has now exploded lol.

Why can’t we stop looking at this as a kind of “fortune telling nonsense” and “magic” and realize it’s about taking a moment to connect with the earth, the universe, and realize you’re only a tiny microscopic piece of the story and of the fabric - of course all this s**t can be applied to everyone. You’re not special for realizing that. That’s the point. You’re also really not special for missing the point entirely.

I will say, as an almost 40 year old, who suffers from chronic strep throat and was tired of constantly seeing doctors/being on antibiotics.... Some things do work. I started using oregano oil capsules over a decade ago and have not had to spend money on a doctor or medication for strep throat since. No one jump down my throat, lol. I very much believe in science, medication and doctors... I just found an alternate, much cheaper means of treating something.

Oregano oil is herbal medicine, often called naturopathy, not homeopathy. Homeopathy is the belief that water carries a memory and having just a tiny amount in high dilution has an effect on the body. It also preaches that like cures like. So their remedy would be made with a substance they believe causes the symptom your experiencing. Homeopathic remedies for sore throat include things like aconite, belladonna, and mercury. These are highly diluted, of course, so they're not going to kill you or make you sick the way taking these substances straight would.

Homoeopathy is definitely different than naturopathic medicine. Homeopathy has a whole belief system to it that's spiritual, but Naturopathy is literally just using plant medicine. Works perfectly for non serious issues and a good side aid when you're already taking prescribed medicine from a doctor. Plants and Herbs are easily strong enough to help with Panic Attacks, Headaches, minor injuries, colds and flus etc, but if you have something more serious like Cancer, it'll certainly help to ingest immune boosting and energy boosting plants, but you still need to see a doctor and get chemo etc

Garbage. Absolute, complete dumbf*ck garbage. The only time I have any patience with someone who thinks homeopathy works is when I find out that they don’t even actually know what it is, and are confusing it with naturopathy.

Korean Popmusic - while there is a great range of bands & styles, the most popular ones often are disturbing. More often than not the members (mostly women) are styled to look wa~y younger than they are (for example 12y/o than 20+y/o) and dressed up like fancy flittering, overs☆xualised dolls. And as far as I know the poor women often are worked down to burnouts really fast, while they need to look flirty and happy everytime they are seen. ||| pls don't read it as a generalisation, just as I said & like in any other direction of music, there is a wide range of styles. ||| pls correct me if/when I'm wrong

I'm convinced that the weebs, those who take wanting to be Korean when they are not Korean to a level that is cult-like, are the ones who make liking/loving Kpop cringy. Personally, I like Kpop, but I have seen "fans" pull members off stage, stalk them obsessively online, rip them apart in forums when a dance move wasn't to their liking, it's a lot. Getting to Kpop star status is hard, the levels of training they go through is insane, so watching fans treat them like a toy is horrible.

I posted this in a reply downthread, but I want to make sure that it doesn't get lost in the replies: In our community spaces (ARMY, the name for the BTS fandom community), we frequently discuss that it is very much not okay to objectify and/or infantilize our artists. We talk a lot about how our artist are fully autonomous and highly competent adult men who have a right to privacy when they are not at work. We have frequent conversations about Knowing Your Place as a Fan. Our artist's role is to create art. Our role is to support their art and to support our other fandom members. We do our best to self-regulate inappropriate behavior. When we catch other fans violating the fan Code of Conduct (found on the label's Weverse app) by doing things like sharing photos of our artists when they are off work or at the airport, we report their screen names (and real name if known) to the label, where they are blacklisted from all future concerns and other official fan events.

My husband has struggled with his weight for years, he has a very much "all or nothing" approach to the gym/dieting which is always unsustainable. Since he started crossfit his attitude has changed, even when he has periods where he can't go for weeks he's always motivated to go back, they've even reached out to him to check he's okay - which a gym would never do, they'll happily take money foe a service you aren't using! I don't exercise really but from my experience crossfit is worth the extra cost over the gym if it keeps you going back because you enjoy it and you're surrounded by good people.

This is going to get me downloaded for sure, and before I say anything else I am an american. I don't believe the concept of the United States works in our modern world. Made a lot more sense when the population was small and spread out, a way to unify many different people in many different places. Now we just hop on the internet, maybe it's time to break this country up into regionalities. As many things in the world today don't relate back 200 plus years ago, we made me in need of a reevaluation. No other country in the world seems to look back to the start of their country in relation to how we should be living today. Granted those countries are generally much older, but the concept is the same. Okay, see you guys in a few days when I'm able to comment again haha

Hot take: owning dogs EDIT: owning specific breeds of dogs

3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

The very concept of "pure-breed" dogs is a genetic disaster waiting to happen. As soon as you restrict the genetic diversity in this way, the extinction of the breed becomes inevitable. As much as people don't want to hear it, this is scientific fact. Don't even get me started on the ethics of deliberately breeding deformed animals that suffer throughout their lives in search of an aesthetic. And now we've moved on to doing the same thing to other species, like cats, rats, mice and guinea pigs. Even reptiles aren't immune to the greed and selfishness of the humans who breed them for "pretty colors".

And now too fish! There are ‘Glowfish,’ which are White Skirt Tetras which are patented btw, same as Clownfish, eg. Davinchi, Flurry, etc…. Frankenstein is clearly a modern fable unfolding in our time! *Line breeding is breeding the offspring with one of the parents. Perhaps outwardly there might be Dominant, Dominant, but inwardly if both parents carry a recessive gene for an illness, genetic disease or a dominant gene for another illness, the offspring have a far greater risk genetically of either presenting at birth or as an adult…. These things become more ‘amplified,’ within a breed, and then we have breed specific genetic illness/disease becoming more and more prevalent. Our animals are getting sicker, just like we are. Ok. Going to go and sit in the garden and try to enjoy the birds and the dwindling bee populations….

It’s the people who act like their dogs are literal children that I hate. No, your dog doesn’t need to go grocery shopping with you. No, they don’t need to be pushed in a stroller when you go for a walk. Unless they have severe separation anxiety they are perfectly fine if you leave them home alone. There is actually a study currently running in the United States following the health, medical issues and lifespans of Golden Retrievers. In the 1970’s, or early 80’s these dogs lived to be 15 years of age, often a bit older. In the decades since, the average lifespan is now 8/9 years. Possible theories are working breed dogs live longer because they are bred for strength, health, stamina as opposed to practising ‘line breeding,’* the prized Turkish Breed Kangal, bred for centuries to protect livestock. It is a very large breed dog, 120-160lbs is not uncommon. Dispelling the myth that larger dogs hearts are too small in ratio to their body size, ( true for breeds that have been bred to become gigantic). Typically working breeds like Collies have long lifespans, but inbreeding for ‘desirable,’ characteristics like a very long narrow head, ( too small for the brain), or pugs, ( or any of the Brachycephalic breeds have difficulty breathing, esp. in the heat and even the eyes can po…

…German Sheppards, Great Danes, Rotwielers, Golden Retrievers are prone to hip dysplasia. Poodles, Bouviers de Flanders, Irish Wolfhounds, among many others are prone to cancer. All popular breeds have become more and more altered from the breed standard 100 or more years ago. As the gene pool becomes smaller, genetic illnesses, aka breed specific illnesses are becoming more pronounced. Eg. The Neopolitan Mastino, decimated in the last World War was resuscitated as a breed from a handful of the last remaining dogs, an ancient breed going back to Sumeria!!! Also, dogs, like most of the populations in the turn of the 20th century routinely worked for at least a few hours per day and were much leaner. There are obviously not any clear answers but dogs are getting sicker! Environmental factors likely contribute to shortened lifespans, eg. chemicals about the home, in the environment. Did you know that there is no place in the world where rainwater is safe to drink?!? Get a mutt!

Here's how it works, according to my own experience. Most in-your-face "proselytizing atheists" are often former christians that recently deconverted. They are usually among the most militant as they have spent a lifetime trying to convert other people to their faith and their atheism is just a continuation of a lifelong habit. Annoying as it can be, it's understandable. Becoming an atheist is not a magic reset. I have always been an atheist. The only times I bring it up is either if someone is trying to convert me or if someone is trying to legislate religious morality in public life. Marriage, schools, mandated prayers, abortion, etc.. At that point I will protest, but otherwise I care little what god someone worships. Most of those ex-religious militant atheists eventually realize how obnoxious they are and stop, but given how many christians there are, there is always a fresh batch ready to make fools of themselves.

That's the beauty of atheism: no one is trying to convert you. It's religion that is constantly trying to convert everyone! Religion judges people (even tho it's not supposed to). Atheism doesn't give a s**t what you do unless it is forcing itself on others (like through politics). It's religion that gets in everyone's business. Explain that if atheism wants converts.

This is accurate. it's why I no longer announce my position to people because it seems like proselytising. What I now do is wait for someone to say or do some religious stuff then I say by the way not all of us are into that, do you mind keeping it to yourself??

I'm an atheist but I think it's all emotional anyway. I can give you plenty of intellectual reasons why there is no god, but the fact is that one day I realised I just didn't believe it. I imagine people who do believe do so because they feel it, not because they're persuaded. To the best of my knowledge Pascal's Wager has never converted anyone.

I have a Switch, XBox 360, Playstation 4 2 and 1, GameCube, Wii, PSP and Vita. I don't play much on PC because I don't have good place to set up and I'm not very ambidextrous (wish I could play piano and guitar, but I broke a finger when I was younger and I don't think it ever healed right). We trust science because there is tangible evidence we can see, from years of scientists researching. Crystals have word of mouth, even then, not even trustworthy word of mouth

Science doesn't involve trust. It relies on facts, demonstrable facts.

There is a wrong understanding of science among all kinds of so called sceptics. They demand 100% certainness from scientist but that's not how science works. There is still ongoing arguments on even the most common theories like evolution and gravity which is good because otherwise it wouldn't be a scientific discussion. Only religion claims 100% true facts and these people expects to see same attitude from scientists. If it's not "totally true" it must be b******t.

Science is tricky though. I believe in science that is done correctly, with proper investigation and discussion. Remember, the sugar industry paid for science to make it seem like fat in foods will make you fat so people will buy fat-free foods loaded with sugar.

More like people cherry pick the science they want to support their own confirmation bias. (Seems to happen a lot nowadays from both sides).
