Anyone who has worked in customer service and interacted with a fair share of strangers on a daily basis knows how tiring it can be. Waiters and bartenders are no exception; they are fully aware of how much resilience it takes to smile at someone while they curse at you, complaining about (trivial) things that are out of your control. The job demands character and deserves proper recognition. Yet their salary is often so low, they have to rely on tips just to get by.
Sadly, some sleazy customers use tipping just as another way of disrespecting the staff serving them. For example, people leave fake money with a picture of their preferred presidential candidate. Or put a few bills inside a full glass and place it upside down, so the only way to clean the table is to make a mess. Interestingly, a relatively new study has found that demanding jobs offering employees little control are among the most detrimental people's mental and physical health.
Scientists at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, analyzed the data of over 138,700 participants from six previous studies on job-related health. Using this information, they classified jobs into four groups based on control and how psychologically demanding the role: low demand and low control jobs such as manual labour were labelled "Passive," while jobs with high control like architects and scientists were "Low Stress," and jobs with both high demand and high control (teachers or doctors) were "Active."

I think the biggest problem is the service industry in the USA does not pay their employees a proper wage in the first instance. This results in the workers heavily relying on tips to subsidise their income. In European countries employees are paid a minimum wage (ok, this isn’t always as much as it could be) and are less affected by what tips they receive. As well as shitty customers, employers should also take more responsibility for the income their staff receives.

Scientists found that waiters and waitresses have a 22% higher risk of stroke on average than those with low stress jobs. The figure jumps to 33% for women when you differentiate data by gender.
The research explained that while those holding down jobs we often consider demanding jobs like architects and scientists may seem like prime candidates for boiling blood pressure, work-related stress is largely dependent on whether or not you have a job where you feel in control and respected.
A neurosurgeon may be drained after a long, difficult day at work but they probably know society understand's the value of their labor. But imagine running in and out of the kitchen for 12 hours, bringing people food and ensuring they have a good time, only to have someone say "fu*k you" instead of leaving you a tip.

Some people may be surprised to learn that waitpeople are not animals in training, where you give an extra treat for a good job or deny a treat for not doing something. Having been a waiter, I experienced this situation once. I knew what was going on. I gave this table the bare minimum so that I could concentrate on nicer people at other tables.

I understand tipping less if you are unhappy with your service, but to take a dollar away for every mistake they make is unfair. Mistakes happen, and this is not likely to guarantee you good service. If anything you might make them nervous and they'd screw up more. You can't directly corelate a dollar per mistake or improvement.

Tip should be an extra-appreciation of good service. Salary should be enough to live with. That’s happened a few times in the restaurants I worked in. The menu states that parties of (I think) ten or more have an automatic gratuity added on to the bill. It’s always been this way as far as I know for obvious reasons. It’s usually one type who wants to argue that situation.

My rule: Do not eat out if I cannot also afford to tip 15-20%. It's a shame that it's even legal to pay waitstaff less than minimum wage and force them to rely on tips as well. Another great job, USA (sarcasm).

It's a silly system you guys are running in the US. On my first restaurant visit there I forgot to tip and the waitress followed me outside and demanded what was wrong with the service. I told her nothing was wrong and I just forgot because we don’t tip in my country. Judging by her look she didn't believe me. Anyway, I tipped her and felt pretty s***ty about the whole experience.

Reverse here. I started to leave a tip to someone in the EU and she got super-offended, and I had to stammer "Es tut mir leid! Ich komme aus den USA! Es ist unsere Gewohnheit!" (which is my A-1 German for I'm sorry! I'm from the US. It's our custom/habit").... She calmed and said something I understood to be "Oh, no problem, thank you for apologizing." (Or she cursed me to a life of doom. My German does suck.)

Actually, most of these are very rude, selfish, or outright stupid. The problem, however, is that serice workers in the US rely on tips. If tips would come as a small bonus for over-average service (or a bit more for outstanding service) while salaries would be in alignment with the job's duties, these kind of problems would not even exist. TL/DR: tips are not meant as a salary replacement but as a bonus to a decent salary.

It actually goes back to the 'gentry' who had live-in servants. They weren't paid jack because they received room, board and clothing. When Restaurants first cropped up, the people doing the waiting were all family. When they ha to start hiring, most customers looked down on *all* 'hired help', and said help was usually just there to find a husband, so it was felt they didn't have to pay very much. And it became custom, and eventually was grandfathered into the wage system 'because we can't afford anything more. We'd have to close.' (We still hear that, BTW.) Now it looks as if this will finally be addressed. I hope so.

It's not that there's no effort to change it; it's that we need a more coordinated effort rather than the sporadic, usually localized efforts we've been getting. And it needs to have a louder, more focused voice to it. Most people don't realize there's a problem. Truth is, the living wage doesn't keep up with inflation. For every 1% increase in wages that the majority of John Q. Public receives, inflation will have gone up 5-8% at least three times, sometimes 4.

This is so rude. That people even rely on tips to just survive is more than only rude, this is what makes you realize you live in an effed up society that employs totally wrong values and maybe even is proud of it - see the healthcare discussions in the US to gain further reasons to vomit. 1st of all - why should I tip every time. This is an option and a customer goodwill. In Europe/ Spain we tip only if we are really satisfied with the service. 2nd - we do not know how the service was. May be the waiter was rude, we see only the bill posted from the waiter.

I'm not American and tipping isn't part of our norm here (new zealand), but I'm pretty sure in America they rely on tips to make ends meet, their employer essentially underpay them because they will "get tips to make up the shortfall". It's a silly system I agree, but if I was in America (or any other country where tipping is customary) then I would tip, even if its just for that reason alone (that the system means they need the tip)

Pretty much. Minimum wage is $7.25 an hour in some places, and (from what I’ve heard) often restaurants will pay their staff like $2.50 an hour, plus what they make in tips.

Having lived in the US (my boyfriend is American) and being from Australia (where tipping is not a thing) its not like the meals are that cheap (sans tip) anyway in the US so wtf. It's more expensive for me to eat out in America than it is in Australia. US-ians say say giving restaurant workers minimum wage means its going to be 20 dollar tacos and blah blah blah but food doesn't cost that much here in Australia and we give them a min wage. It feels like entitled owners that don't want to give up their massive slice of the pie, they feel like they are entitled to all the money they make *cough*likeJeffBezos*cough* and the s**t kickers doing all the hard work deserve sweet FA. Tipping culture sucks. I feel like its an excuse to get other people to pay the workers you're supposed to be providing for. I really hope Biden gets rid of it.

I feel bad about seeing these receipts with no tip because it makes me think of all of the times that I don't leave a tip on my card, but leave one in cash instead. I write "0" in the tip line and leave the cash behind the bill. I know when I was a server, I appreciated cash tips. I would hate to see my receipt on here with someone claiming I didn't tip when I left 20 -30% in cash.

So, I worked as a waitress for a short time when I was attending university. Nothing even remotely close to these things ever happened to me. People are usually respectful. Also, i didnt receive tips because in italy waiters are paid a full salary and dont have to rely on customers for that.

Fun fact: One of indicators that someone is narcissist psychopath is that he/she behaves really nasty to the waiters, doormen and other such service providing people (while sucking up to people in higher social positions in contrast). So when you are in restaurant with someone who does such bs as the things in this list, there is a very high possibility that the person is narcissist and it is better to run away very quickly.

What these people do, is awful! I have come back with tip and a bit extra in it, when I didn’t have a tip. BESIDES, it’s not the wait staffs fault if the food is bad, it’s the kitchen or cooks or chef. They get a pay check that is more than the wait staff! Don’t make the waitress or waiter pay for your unhappiness with the food.

First time in the US, I was unaware of this tipping thing so I paid my bill and walked out, as you would. One of the waiters followed me out, where he excused himself and explained the situation without getting emotional and from then on it was not a problem. I just don´t understand America, so advanced in some areas and so bad in others.

A lot of people mistakenly think that tipping a waiter/waitress is for excellent service; they don't get that it's what you OWE someone for performing a service. It's as if you could decide yourself how much the "labor" part of your auto-repair bill comes to. Also, if you GET bad service, (slow service, poor attention), it's often that there's a breakdown that's adding stress to the waitstaff's jobs. It sucks to work harder and in poorer conditions and get paid less to do it! 15% is the MINIMUM, not for exceptional service. (I've had to explain that in person to older people.) I just wish we could do without the obvious fake crap inserted to push agendas.

Less money in the servers' wage slips means more money in theirs, unless they're a little mom and pop restaurant where they're holding on by the skin of their teeth. (Although, honestly, I don't know if there are any of those left. No, we have one 6 blocks from my house. Father cooks, Mom waits on tables, and the kids are small enough to be underfoot. And someone will try to get them for child labor when the girl's old enough to help off and on. I eat there --and leave a damned good tip!--whenever I can.

When I visited America back in 2011 (I'm Australian), my father and I made a point of getting a local friend to carefully explain how to tip properly. We got pretty good at calculating the percentage. (Here, people only leave tips as a compliment/gift).

I REALLY dislike the passive aggressive nature of many of these examples... petty individuals taking out their gripes on those who don't deserve it. I usually get good to excellent service when dining out and I am not going to stiff the server on their tip (I'm in the UK). If the service were terrible I would raise the issue long before the meal ended, speaking to the manager/owner if necessary and giving them the chance to rectify the situation. I am an adult and responsible for my own behaviour.

Just end the tip system! It is ridiculous and we in America are the only ones who do this and it started during prohibition as a bribe. I hate the tip system, absolutely think it is detrimental to servers. You gotta raise the cost of food then...by what, 20%. It ensures a regular and dependable wage. Also, if we are keeping the tip system then I am not going to tip terrible servers. 99% of the time I tip 20% but on the rare occasions I have bad service then why not take advantage of such a terrible system and save your money by not tipping. Hate the whole thing.

The only time I did something like this was before I had a job waiting tables. I ordered and specifically asked for no pickles multiple times and the burger came with pickles. I put the condiment drenched pickles with her tip.( a 20 btw). I also left a tip on the table when newly stationed in Japan and had a waitress running down the street, money in hand like I left my glasses case or something

So then what about hair stylists? I tip mine 20% which adds another 40 dollars to my bill. Yikes! If we don't tip the minimum recommendation of 15%, then we are terrible people and I'm surely going to get my hair "accidentally" cut too short or burned off! Or my stylist will basically fire me because I'm a crappy tipper. (Which I'm not) But basically being forced to tip at least 15% for whatever kind of service I'm provided, good or bad, can be quite annoying sometimes

It's a silly system you guys are running in the US. On my first restaurant visit there I forgot to tip and the waitress followed me outside and demanded what was wrong with the service. I told her nothing was wrong and I just forgot because we don’t tip in my country. Judging by her look she didn't believe me. Anyway, I tipped her and felt pretty s***ty about the whole experience.

Reverse here. I started to leave a tip to someone in the EU and she got super-offended, and I had to stammer "Es tut mir leid! Ich komme aus den USA! Es ist unsere Gewohnheit!" (which is my A-1 German for I'm sorry! I'm from the US. It's our custom/habit").... She calmed and said something I understood to be "Oh, no problem, thank you for apologizing." (Or she cursed me to a life of doom. My German does suck.)

First time in the US, I was unaware of this tipping thing so I paid my bill and walked out, as you would. One of the waiters followed me out, where he excused himself and explained the situation without getting emotional and from then on it was not a problem. I just don´t understand America, so advanced in some areas and so bad in others.

A lot of people mistakenly think that tipping a waiter/waitress is for excellent service; they don't get that it's what you OWE someone for performing a service. It's as if you could decide yourself how much the "labor" part of your auto-repair bill comes to. Also, if you GET bad service, (slow service, poor attention), it's often that there's a breakdown that's adding stress to the waitstaff's jobs. It sucks to work harder and in poorer conditions and get paid less to do it! 15% is the MINIMUM, not for exceptional service. (I've had to explain that in person to older people.) I just wish we could do without the obvious fake crap inserted to push agendas.

Less money in the servers' wage slips means more money in theirs, unless they're a little mom and pop restaurant where they're holding on by the skin of their teeth. (Although, honestly, I don't know if there are any of those left. No, we have one 6 blocks from my house. Father cooks, Mom waits on tables, and the kids are small enough to be underfoot. And someone will try to get them for child labor when the girl's old enough to help off and on. I eat there --and leave a damned good tip!--whenever I can.

Th closings during the pandemic just might do it, but I fear it will go the other way. "We don't make enough; we *can't* give our waitstaff anything more." I'm afraid it's going to literally take an act of Congress, and with Moscow Mitch there, don't hold your breath. Serving staff is beneath his notice--besides, he likes hurting people.

Those people who tip, cash or otherwise, weren't the point of this . *They* fulfilled their responsibility; they don't need to be shamed. In short words, they ain't cheap, and nothing would be said about the zero in the tip line.

When I visited America back in 2011 (I'm Australian), my father and I made a point of getting a local friend to carefully explain how to tip properly. We got pretty good at calculating the percentage. (Here, people only leave tips as a compliment/gift).

I REALLY dislike the passive aggressive nature of many of these examples... petty individuals taking out their gripes on those who don't deserve it. I usually get good to excellent service when dining out and I am not going to stiff the server on their tip (I'm in the UK). If the service were terrible I would raise the issue long before the meal ended, speaking to the manager/owner if necessary and giving them the chance to rectify the situation. I am an adult and responsible for my own behaviour.

I have a question. I don't live in the USA, so I wonder why people have to write the tip on the receipt. I have never ever done that in my entire life, and I'll turn 40 next year. Is it because so many people in the USA pay with a credit/debit card?

Just end the tip system! It is ridiculous and we in America are the only ones who do this and it started during prohibition as a bribe. I hate the tip system, absolutely think it is detrimental to servers. You gotta raise the cost of food then...by what, 20%. It ensures a regular and dependable wage. Also, if we are keeping the tip system then I am not going to tip terrible servers. 99% of the time I tip 20% but on the rare occasions I have bad service then why not take advantage of such a terrible system and save your money by not tipping. Hate the whole thing.

The only time I did something like this was before I had a job waiting tables. I ordered and specifically asked for no pickles multiple times and the burger came with pickles. I put the condiment drenched pickles with her tip.( a 20 btw). I also left a tip on the table when newly stationed in Japan and had a waitress running down the street, money in hand like I left my glasses case or something

So then what about hair stylists? I tip mine 20% which adds another 40 dollars to my bill. Yikes! If we don't tip the minimum recommendation of 15%, then we are terrible people and I'm surely going to get my hair "accidentally" cut too short or burned off! Or my stylist will basically fire me because I'm a crappy tipper. (Which I'm not) But basically being forced to tip at least 15% for whatever kind of service I'm provided, good or bad, can be quite annoying sometimes

This s**t happens all the time at every restaurant. Youre a moron if you don't believe it.and 99% of people write the word cash on the tip line if they leave cash. And if you're not from America then you need to know that servers make about three or four dollars an hour and rely on tips to make a living. and they deserve it cuz that's the kind of s**t they have to deal with
