There’s always something we don’t like. I can’t stand the taste of beetroots, while my best friend is basically allergic to licorice. Food is just one category where people often express their dislikes, but we see the same bursts of loathing anywhere from the animal kingdom to leisure activities. A relative of mine couldn’t stand stepping into a boat, or rather even the thought of it.

But when you stop and think about the things humans address their hate towards, you start wondering about the reasons why. Maybe we’re simply scared of the unknown (yes, tarantulas, we’re speaking of you!) or maybe it’s our past experiences that haunt us to this day.

In any case, today is the perfect time to step back and reflect on these things. Thanks to these two thought-provoking Reddit threads (here and here) where people listed all the things that don’t deserve the hate they get, we have a lot to uncover!

People Name 50 Things That Should Not Be So Universally Hated But Somehow Are Homeless people. It doesnt matter how they lost their home, it doesnt matter if they suffer from an addiction, it doesnt matter if they have a job or not. People have unspoken challenges that you dont know about, and they may have never happened to you, and its none of your damn business why theyre homeless. Housing should be considered a human right, and the fact this is still up for debate bothers me. I've seen how small bachelor pads can get, people really dont need much to survive.

Also, people act as if housing being a human right somehow infringes on their ability to buy property, when it doesnt. It just means those that are less fortunate literally just *CANT* be homeless and would be accommodated with the basics for human survival like running water, power, insolated walls and a bed. The fact that housing has been treated as profitable to exploit the lower class, is the reason we have homeless people. Not because of your pre-conceived idea of their life you know nothing about.

I'm currently homeless and it was because my landlord sold the house without telling us til a week before we had to move out. I have a special needs son and on a fixed income so I haven't been to find anything.

People Name 50 Things That Should Not Be So Universally Hated But Somehow Are Opossums. They're neat little critters. They eat tons of ticks that carry Lyme disease, (mostly) don't carry rabies because their body temp is too low, and they're the only marsupial native to North America! They get a bad rap because their first defense is to hiss and bare teeth, but failing that, they just play dead.

If you don't have the predisposition to hate them, you'll find they're pretty cute too.

They had to ban an episode of Peppa Pig called "spiders are our friends". Not in the US, or UK, but... in Australia it's not a safe lesson to learn (at least not the way Peppa was approaching it). My boss's sister lives in Australia and was bitten by one of the more dangerous ones just by using a petrol pump - dangerous if provoked? Yeah, and also hidden where humans are regularly doing their thing and *not* seeking to provoke.

I love spiders and all they do but they regularly creep me out. Web making spiders give you an unexpected surprise when you walk into one of their creations. I'm glad they are keeping the insects down but it freaks me out when I walk into a web while letting the dog out at 2am in my PJs. On the other end, are the hunting spiders - they are so quiet and move so fast they cause jump scares all the time. A couple days ago, I'm brushing my teeth and I went to grab the toothpaste and a spider went running off it as I reached down. Neither one of us wanted harm to the other but I had not had any caffeine yet and I let out an audible yelp at the surprise.

Wolves they are always the villian of the story but in real life they are scared of humans and they have every right. Just a few weeks ago a lot people killed a lot of wolves because its "wolf season" or something that of sorts. These creatures are very misunderstood and yeah they are big and can kill a human but it won't unless its hunrgy or threated. A long time ago, there was a wolf hunt in europe killing a lot of wolves. They are beautiful creatures, strong, fast, loyal to their pack, and very protective of their pack.

It's not about lack of practice. It's about lack of abilities needed for this. I know myself. I know it would be dangerous to me and others for me to drive, so I do the responsible thing and I don't. And I get so much sh@@ for it. Like there's no way I can know myself better than this stranger who met me 5 minutes ago and can absolutely tell that I just need practice because that's how it worked for them.

Let people enjoy things. Music is art, and art is very personal. If you don’t like it, bring headphones. The only time it annoys me is if there’s gospel music in public places. Simply because gospel is very emotional and kind of moody. Like I just wanna sit here and eat my enchiladas and complain to my spouse about work that day. I’m not really in the mood to drop down on my knees in a fervent worship session at Jose Taco.

Worked in community services for a few years on a mandatory program for anyone on welfare to get them back to work. There were only three types of people 1. Want to work, 2. Absolutely unemployable at that moment in time, and 3. Incredibly lazy. There was hardly anyone in the lazy category. Some of the people experiencing homelessness or people addicted to drugs or alcohol wanted so so badly to get jobs but had too many personal challenges to be reliable enough to make it to work. Broke my heart.

Nuclear energy. Of the 3 big nuclear accidents (Chernobyl, Fukushima, Three Mile Island), two of those designs are no longer in use at any plant, and none of the designs have been used to build any new plants in decades. The entire industry has been made far safer as a result of learning from past mistakes and it is now the greenest of energies. But many people are still adamantly anti-nuclear.

Not disagreeing, in fact it does seem like a good clean source these days but . . . Have they figured out how to handle the waste (used fuel rods etc.) safely?

People Name 50 Things That Should Not Be So Universally Hated But Somehow Are Meteorologists. They try their best to predict the weather based on patterns, models, and data. They're not perfect because predicting the weather is insanely difficult. When they get it wrong, I think we should go easy on them. It was probably an outlier result almost no one could have foreseen.

Optimism.

I'd rather be an optimist who's occasionally wrong than a pessimist who's always right.

I think optimism needs space to breathe and grow.

It’s true. For some reason few people want to hear ‘alright, let’s get this done! We’ll do what we can to foresee problems, and face challenges head on as they arise’. Humans are even strangely wired to find any change painful

Anything that’s popular/mainstream is such because it’s just so amazing and original that everyone just loves it, or because it’s engineered to be a safe rehashed, proven product to maximize the chance of having a broad appeal. The former is rare and timeless. The latter is dime a dozen and you won’t even remember it two years from now. I just wait until everyone I know can’t stop talking about it, then I check it out.

I love diving with sharks, they really are such beautiful creatures. I wish more people would experience life under the ocean to see how beautiful it is and maybe experience first hand all the harm that is happening down there. Every dive my partner and I collect bag loads of rubbish, it's getting quite heartbreaking.

Fast food. It's just meant to be quick and edible, not healthy and sophisticated. And some days I'd rather wait 5 minutes in a McDonald's than spend an hour cooking for myself.

Depends on what you’re cooking at home too. A fast food meal can be the nutritional equivalent of a lot of typical American home-cooked meals- particularly processed or “quick meals”. Neither is good for you, but nutritionally it doesn’t make a difference.

If you can eat anything nacho cheese or ranch flavored, but Asian food gives you a headache, it’s not MSG. It’s racism.

The banjo, people only associate it with bluegrass and therefore not many people like the instrument. But when playing other styles it actually sound very nice and interesting.

Snakes, okay *some* snakes. I can understand a fear or phobia of snakes because we're instinctually afraid of them. Even if you're not scared of them, if you touch or see a snake you'll probably get a shiver up your spine or get goosebumps since they were a big problem for our race WAY back when. Hating snakes though? most of them leave you alone and mind their business as long as you mind yours.

People Name 50 Things That Should Not Be So Universally Hated But Somehow Are The Prius. Rock solid, reliable, cheap on gas, and, as of the 3rd gen, average performance. Lots of storage and utility. People love to hate it. People always want to be in front of it, even if they intend to go slower than it was. Everybody that has a coal tune on their truck has to take a shot at rolling on it, and the list goes on.

I don't care if people hate on me and my Prius. It's approaching 400K miles, and has averaged a little over 50MPG since new (I have the records to prove it). Without question it has been the best car we've ever owned, and the best vehicular investment, too. Not the most fun, admittedly, but I never expected a Prius to be fun.

SPAM (the canned SPiced hAM product, not trash email). I make SPAM musubi about three times a year. At least once a year, my family has fried SPAM sandwiches for supper. We would probably have it more often if it wasn't so expensive.

I’ve never understood food based stereotypes. “Ha ha! Those people eat that particular food. That’s so like them and why they’re terrible.” And it’s a food with broad appeal. Idiotic.

<Insert Current Videogame Popular with Kids>

Be it minecraft or fortnight or roblox or whatever, there always seems to be a game out which it is fashionable to s**t all over just because a certain group of people you find personally annoying enjoy.

Sure, I find the minecraft build tutorials narrated by someone who hasn't blown their nose once in their 14 years of life annoying, but you know what he's putting it out there and good on him.

Right now Diablo Immortal is my go to game. I know it's been labeled as pay to win (p2w) but I have found it very enjoyable and I have spent maybe $20 max on it. It's f2p (free to play) and there isn't a spending requirement at all. It's just to help in certain dynamics of the game.

In Canada, a group of Syrian refugees was booked at a hotel while they got sorted and could figure out where they would be living ect. Unknown to the organizers, the hotel was hosting a local furry convention at the time. The Syrian children, likely terrified from fleeing the ongoing war in their home city, were greeted with brightly coloured and sympathetic fursuits who were absolutely delighted to share a hug with scared children.
