This will sound a bit dark, but it's ultimately not: confronting my abusive parent. I'm 50 and I finally did it a few months ago. I no longer have a relationship with that parent, and doing it was very hard, very scary, and very rough. But as soon as I did it, I felt like an immense weight had been lifted from me. I had spent most of my adult life pretending to have a normal relationship with someone who physically and emotionally abused me throughout my childhood. It took years of therapy for me to even grasp how deeply that affected me or how much it cost me to keep it up. I just feel so free. I wish I had done this the second I was out the door of their house, but this will do.

I did this when I was about 22 years old, never saw my dad again. Years later, a police man at my door to inform me that my father died, I needed to contact the city councel where he lived, so I did. They wanted me to arrange the funeral, I refused. So they burried him, then sent me the bill. I refused to pay, made objection in an official letter. I had to wait a year for an awnser, but they dropped the bill. I'm glad he's out of my life.

Pay for the funeral of a father you wanted to have nothing to do with? Of course not. Glad you refused.

I started to confront my mom about some big issues from when I grew up. She kept interrupting me and saying that she had no idea what I was talking about. At one point she even said "WHO did that to you!?!? If I had known about this I would have told them to cut it off!" And I just said "you, mom. You did this to me along with grandma and auntie". And she denied every single thing. So... I will never ever get closure with this. I'm happy for op that they got some closure with their parent, though.

Walking away and praying for the best for both the person who hurt you and yourself while still keeping your boundaries can both be the hardest and most important decision you will make in your relationship with that person. I had to do exactly that with my dad years ago and see more of it coming in the future if he does not take accountability for how he treated my sibling and me when we were children. It’s been hard, but I don’t regret it.

30 People Reveal Things That Improved Their Lives So Much, They Wish They Had Done Them Sooner Losing weight. Went from about 225 down to 165 over the course of 2020 (took the opportunity to work on myself) and I feel better than I have in years. It was hard work, but I've managed to keep off for the past year, so I'm hoping I can keep this going!

I had a gastric bypass when my daughter was 3 she is now 28 so that means that I got it done 25 years ago…the problem is that when I got married my ex-husband made me sit there and finish the food that I had on my plate and would not let me get up to go to the bathroom because I had overate so that caused me to have my stomach stretch out again which has caused me to gain back a lot of the weight that I had initially lost. Now my doctors will not let me get the weight loss medicine because I am on Medicare & Medicaid and weight loss medications are not covered but if I try to get the discounts that the manufacturer has I do not qualify for those because I have Medicaid so…long story short I am stuck with being bigger now then I have been since my surgery and there is nothing I can do about it because of my financial situation and the fact that gov’t. Health care in the US is cornered that they won’t pay for any weight loss medications to help me take off the weight causing bad health

I feel your pain. I take vacation time off, only to spend it at home or somewhere nearby. Even if I save, I can't afford to go anywhere. Overtime and all other saved money goes into home repairs, car repairs, and new shoes and clothing for guess what? WORK! At least vacation time is paid time off from having to go to work. It seems most of us are in that same category now.

I new job is 7 hours a day (with anything over 7 hours overtime). At first, I was disappointed because I wasn't told before I took it and 5 hours is a decent amount of income to "lose" each week. However, it's turned out to be the best thing to happen to me. I LOVE it and couldn't go back to 8 hour days. And I just have had to adjust my spending a bit but who cares? I'm cooking more than ordering in. Big deal.

Not my life but my grandfather’s. Literally 2 weeks ago, he began swelling in his legs and feet. He was very tired, out of breath, literally in the worst state I’ve ever seen him in. I begged him to go to the ER. He refused 3 times before he caved in and let me take him. After an echocardiogram and about 10 more tests, it was determined that he was in heart failure with his heart only pumping at 15% and heart rate at 30 bpm. A pacemaker and defibrillator were installed in his chest and he was put on a routine of Lasix. He was discharged last Saturday and it’s like having the grandpa from my childhood back. Besides a sore shoulder from surgery, he is doing so great. He is going for walks again, sitting outside and feeding the squirrels and birds, spending time with my children and going for rides around the farm in his golf cart. I’m so thankful for the technology that will potentially give us a few more years together and seeing his quality of life improve in such a short amount of time. He is 77 years old. Survived Vietnam, 2 gunshot wounds and 3 heart attacks. He said he would never have a pacemaker. Said he wouldn’t live dependent on technology. Now he wishes he would have had the surgery 10 years ago. Big shoutout to Emory for saving my pop.

I grew up in a very religious family. We were Baptist and even attended Southern Baptist Churches for many years. Religion was heavy in my life until I became an adult. If anyone's wondering, I'm as atheist as a human being can get. In my personal experience, these self proclaimed "good Christians" were the worst people I've ever known.

Leaving any hateful religion is an improvement. I'm really starting to wonder if humans are just hateful by nature to join these institutions, or if these institutions turn humans into hateful monsters. Hate hate hate. That's all that seems to come from churches nowadays.

I was told in kindergarten that I (along with people from third world countries), would burn in the lake of fire for eternity for not believing in Jesus. It didn't matter that me, and people in those third world countries had never even heard that name before. "You don't believe, therefore you must suffer for eternity!" At the age of 5 all I could think about was how evil I thought that belief was, to make innocent people suffer because they can't read. I thought they didn't know about this "person" because they didn't have books to teach them about it in the wasteland they lived in. Scaring children into worshipping your religion backfired, didn't it?

My mom grew up in the Church of Christ, it was forced on her by her mother- she told me stories about how that place was nearly as abusive as her home. As a result, she told all of us kids that we had the full freedom to choose any religion we wanted. Which is probably the reason all 3 of us are atheist/agnostic. Me, personally, I visited a few different churches with my friends when I was young and hated every minute of each occasion - just walking into the building made my spirit shrivel up. Listening to the sermons just doubled the sensation: I watched the people around me nod and clap and "hallelujah" to whatever was being said, while I sat there asking "Why? That doesn't make any sense. You just contradicted yourself!" The few times I dared ask a question in Sunday school about these confusing issues, I was looked at like a devil-possessed person.

To care for myself first, in my mind (do NOT think this is a good thing) , was denying help to people I cared about in need. I'm so tired.

Sometimes you have to walk away and pray for the best for both that person and yourself; that’s okay when all else has failed and there is no shame in knowing when to let go of a relationship that is hurting both of you.

16 years ago, I had to breakup with a friend of over 20 years. It really does feel like a weight is lifted and you can't really describe that feeling unless it happens to you. Most recently, I had to cut someone else out of my life after she ghost me for 5 months and avoided me when I ran across her at a walking path. Both blamed me and that's okay. So much better without them.

Most news media articles are written to inflame the public. I think when the next Civil War starts in America, many of the right wingers will finally realize most of the issues they are giving up their life for are not real and that FOX news made them up for "Entertainment" reasons.

All the media is biased. There are no exceptions. Most of them are owned by the same person, and are positioned well to the left. So the left-wingers are just as much at fault for the divide. They are trusting their own media and not seeing how they are manipulated. The only thing to do is compare left and right sources and see if you can get closer to the truth. For my money it's not worth the effort. Most of these huge debates will be forgotten in a generation or two and people will look back and wonder what was the big deal.

Most people want more or less the same thing. The media makes it seem as if there's a huge divide, when most people are more or less in agreement about the issues and prepared to compromise on how to address them. It's so much easier to go tribal and blame all the ills of the world on a single politician (the politician in question depending on the bias of the particular media outlet involved). That's not how things get done. Better to build bridges than work so hard at putting up barriers.

About 13 years ago, I stopped watching the news, then about 2 years after that I stopped watching TV altogether. My kids went through primary school where they were using netbooks. I spent an hour a week in each of their classes to help out, and ALL of the kids took on the job of openly teaching me about the internet and some computer programs (Word, Excel, Paint, etc.)! They taught me how to Google information as well. Not once were they condescending, not once did they tell me they already taught me that, they were the perfect teachers for me! Hubby set me up as a user of our desktop ( the one I swore I'd never use) and helped me to create a budget in Excel! I stumbled across YouTube while Googling something sciencey and another whole new world opened up for me! I don't need TV, I have YouTube, all my nature and science subscriptions are watched in the morning when I'm more sponge like, and I watch family vloggers, comedy and animal antics to relax before bed! Best thing ever!

This needs to be much higher! I remember the feeling to look out of a window, it was raining and November, but the world suddenly wasn't all grey, it was so colourful. The first days felt like being on d***s (when I took antidepressants for the first time) and after that my world never got as consistently grey again as it was before. Even when I stopped taking them, I remembered the colourful world and finally could see when the world got grey again a few years later and do something against it. Life-changing!

It's scary that a basic medical doctor would prescribe an anti-depressant without a real mental health evaluation, though. Also, first they should check for Vitamin D deficiency. Too many autistic people have been harmed by being given anti-depressants when they shouldn't have been. But I'm glad for OP that this was in fact what they needed and are doing better.

That first step was almost impossible for me. I couldn't even tell my doctor that's what I was coming in for - I made up something else and didn't bring it up until the end of the appointment. It was so shameful for me to admit, (which is stupid, I know!) but it's one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

I had to give up my car of 20 years, frozen engine. Purchased a new 2023 car in CASH!! Being out of debt allows you to save for things you want or need. I went to Credit Consumer Counseling years ago to get out of a $15,000.00 debt. In short, they take over your debts, you pay them 1 large amount monthly and they distribute the money to everyone you owe money to. They also work with the creditors to either reduce the interest rate or cancel the interest rate all together. I NEVER put myself in the position again.

I had a friend for many years, until I realized that the only times we got together was when I took the train to her house; one hour ride. She also had a second home in another state. She was in California when we were first locked up for covid, and asked me to come visit because she couldn't go shopping, to the movies, or out for lunch. I finally realized that she just wanted to be entertained. I told her the local bus was canceled, so I couldn't get to the train (truth). Never heard from her again. No loss.

I mostly read biology books, but enjoy any realm of evidence-based science and some fiction here and there. Even the entire Bible 2 years ago. If anyone reads this, read! It’s wonderful to know our minds can see lines and dots on paper and be able decipher it! Just that concept alone makes me want to read.

I used to hate exercise and struggled to keep up with it. Then I found yoga :) for some reason that’s what made it click for me, it’s a lot easier to lay around on a yoga mat in front of the tv than go for a run. Then I started getting into the more complicated yoga poses and realized how great of a workout it can be - I can even get my cardio with yoga. I’m a lot more flexible than my gym rat friend who lifts weights :) I recommend giving it a try if you’ve been hating the gym!

I always hated going to the gym, and for many years I didn't do any exercise at all. The turning point for me was the discovery of home workout programs. I managed to stick to this for more than three years now, exercising five times a week, in my own home, on a moment that fits me best. I do HIIT cardio and strength training, sometimes with weights or resistance bands, and a bit of yoga. I don't have a fitgirl killer body like the women in the photo, for that I should go way more into nutrition. But I have built so much more strength and stamina, and that's a lot more important to me. Now, in my forties, I'm fitter than I was in my twenties! And it also helps with my mental health. My overall mood has improved and is more stable, and I have less anxiety. That's also a big motivator for me to keep doing this.

This is the best thing that came out of the pandemic. I'm now 100% remote and so incredibly happy. You don't realize what a hassle the whole process is until you don't have to drag yourself to an office every day of the week anymore. I also no longer need to take multiple "mental health days" because I'm so much less stressed.

Yes! But I like it 50/50. I work 2 days from the office and 2 days from home (yes, I find my 32 hour contract also a blessing). Many things I can do from home just fine, and I love not going into traffic or need to overly socialize on those days. But some aspects of my work are better done face to face.

I put it off for way too long and only got around to seeing an optometrist when I failed the vision test at the DMV as I was trying to get my driver's license renewed a while back. I really didn't appreciate how much my vision had deteriorated or how much I was straining to focus on things until I got them. It was like going from an old CRT TV from the 90's directly to a top of the line UHD display. I must have spent about an hour just walking around outside and staring at s**t on that first day.

Go every year if you can (much harder if you don't have insurance, I know)! Some conditions can come on and develop quickly and timely treatment is important. I take my kids every year and last year they found an issue with my daughter's eyes and luckily we are able to give her medicine to keep her vision from degrading but if we hadn't gone for a few years she could have lost a lot during that time.

Getting diagnosed with ADHD and getting treatment. I legit spent over 25 years of my life thinking a 24/7/365 rave going on in my head with over 2000 people screaming and yelling different things at me and that one song i can never find the source of to turn it off was normal and not understanding why I found things like saying “I’m going to go do :insert chore here:” and then DOING THEM IMMEDIATELY so hard. Turns out I don’t have to sit on the couch for 6 hours trying to convince myself that this is the minute in which I’ll go put my cup in the dishwasher and no, emptying the trashcan doesn’t take half an hour it takes two minutes… 😐.

I am on a waiting list to perhaps get a diagnosis. There's "just" 2.5 years to the appointment. And I just had a great week -probably the best I've felt in years. And then yesterday *boom* total burnout. I have cried over nothings. My kids need me to be their mom but I just want to run away and live in complete silence forever. I feel like a huge failure because I just do not function very well. My life is very much damage control. Apologizing for being late/forgetting stuff/not doing things.... I just... don't understand how other adults make things work: taking care of kids, have a fulltime job, keep their house clean and tidy, be a good partner and keep up with health and hobbies. I feel so exhausted and overwhelmed with... everything 😔

Quitting smoking. Better health, and I was in NYC at the time and it was $13 or $14 a pack then. The savings was like getting a raise at work. It then led to getting into fitness, and stopping being a regular at bars. That too was expensive. I got an actual raise and promotion a few months later too.

After being diagnosed with my fifth herniated spinal disc, my doctor recommended drinking more water. Apparently there is no blood supply to the discs. So they only get hydrated when we sleep and they absorb the moisture from the surrounding cells. Drinking more water helps prevent the discs from deteriorating.

The best 'formula' for that is to take your body weight in half and drink that many ounces of water a day. Very hard to do, but the 'effort' alone will reap amazing benefits. Among which is cutting down on coffee and soday.

I recommend it — if you truly know deep down that there is no saving the marriage. Getting out of a 12-year marriage to the wrong person was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. I slept better, didn't need my lose dose of anxiety meds, and had more energy. I didn't even comprehend how bad I felt on a daily basis. So while it isn't a joyous thing to go through initially, feeling like you get your life and sense of self back is totally worth it.

Saying no. Idk why but I used to be proud of never saying no. I was always getting hurt by people, never had money, always busy working on other people's problems and not my own. Then I had a child and learned to word no. Best decision ever. Now I just say no for the hell of it sometimes. My husband will say "can you get me something to drink?" And before I get up to make him a drink I will say "hell no!" I'm now proud and he is proud of me I can't say I'd have learned I had a voice if it wasn't for him. He had a hard time with that as well and now we both help each other say no all the time :).

Public service notice: only about half of people who get lasik get 20/20 vision. More importantly (and i don't know the rates/time frames of this) many people end up needing glasses after x amount of years. I am one of those people. And what really sucks for me: my left eye is now concave (vs convex), so wearing contacts is very difficult, just about every time i blink my vision gets blurry again (this would not matter as much if it were not my very dominant eye). Yes my vision is so much better than it was, but already i can't drive without glasses. I don't know if i would have gotten lasik if i knew that my eye could have gotten so misshappen i would hardly be able to wear contacts...

When you have ADHD though, that's really hard. If you focus on what your friend is saying, you forget what you wanted to say. If you focus on remembering what you want to say, you don't hear what your friend is saying. It can be almost impossible to do both, and it feels like you can't win. It sucks.

Doing random meditations without understanding what they aim for can have serious side effects. Meditation can be harmful if you're traumatized or otherwise disregulated. Trauma Sensitive Mindfulness is cool though.

Playing stupid. I used to (was raised to) think that I had to have all the answers, all the time. When I started working my reviews frequently mentioned "time management" as an area I needed to improve in because I was so busy giving other people the answers they needed (sometimes to simple questions) that I neglected my own work. A senior coworker told me one day, "it's not your job to have all the answers. You only need to have the answers *you* need to get *your* work done. It's okay to play stupid, don't do their work for them.".

I'm kinda the opposite. I gave up the boundless optimism of youth. It's not that I became a pessimist. I just became a realist. And when I started accepting things as they are, and stopped hoping for and reaching for stuff I'm never gonna get, when I stopped believing "If only I can just prove myself, it'll happen!", it took a burden off my shoulders. I don't know if I'd say I've greatly improved my happiness. But I've stopped setting myself up for disappointment. So at least I don't get let down anymore. That did relieve some stress, and like I said, take away some burden. It allowed my to stop pushing myself so hard, and just accept me for me. So that's an improvement, anyway.

Got a septoplasty. At some point in high school I started getting sick…a lot. Always just a cold…NBD right? Except it would floor me for 1-2 weeks. I’d be in bed most of the time. Then good for a week and at it again. Started judo in college which helped but only somewhat. Finally started dating a girl who was premed. She does some googling and makes me a doctor’s appointment. My parents took me around initially but doctors were no help. We come in and explain the situation. Mind you I hadn’t been to a doctor in over 10 years at that point. He is super condescending when I tell him I don’t know anything, she’s premed. Goes ok, let’s have a look “doctor” (to her). Takes one look in my nose and says “oh oh.” Left nostril at 85% open, right at <10%. According to him allergens and junk would build up while I was sick and be waiting the second my immune system was even a little weak. So the guy offers me surgery or a nasal steroid spray. I opt for the latter since my immigrant mentality considered doctors and treatment an absolute last resort. 6 months of bliss as long as I spray religiously. Got tired of what happened if I missed a spray and got the surgery. I don’t think I got sick once the first three years. First time I caught a cold I was floored. Is this what people experienced? I could handle this! Definitely not how I thought a cold is supposed to feel.

This ties into what I commented earlier, about giving up my youthful optimism. I used to think that if only I worked hard enough, I could prove myself to my bosses. But I finally realized that no job would ever see anything other than my neurodivegent flaws, and that I was never going to get a promotion, no matter how hard I tried. I realized that, instead of doing extra work and trying extra hard, and pushing myself to physical and emotional exhaustion, I could get the same exact result-nothing but a paycheck-by just coming in, doing my little 8, and going home. So that's what I do now. It's a little depressing, overall. But it's much less stressful. And I have a lot more emotional energy to devote to what's really important to me: my writing, and my family.

I spent so much time letting people walk all over me and treat me like s**t, but the second I started calling them on it, my life improved immensely. Not needing a bathroom nearby or getting behind at work because I had to change my pad/tampon. It was a stress I didn't realize I was holding so much. Main draw was financial and those initial months were heady, but now it just feels...so natural not to be buying something every month, or stocking up for months ahead of time. YESS!! After I had my son, my body changed, and tampons became super uncomfortable. I was stuck wearing pads, and I always felt like I was wearing a yucky wet diaper. I felt so unclean. I'd heard about cups, but didn't want the worry of emptying and sterilizing them. But then I found disposable menstrual discs, and they literally changed my life!! I could never go back, ever again, and I recommend them to anyone who asks about period priducts. (And yes, I know they create trash. But so do tampons. In fact, tampons create more, because you have to change them more frequently. You can wear discs up to 12 hours, because there's no risk of TSS!) Side note, I think it's awesome that we're casually, openly discussing this subject. As we should be. Body education FTW!!

On top of that I had terrible tonsil stones. If you looked in my mouth my tonsils looked like someone took a razor blade and slashed them repeatedly. My surgery didn't even go well, it was successful obviously but they cauterize those spots when the tonsils come out and the dumb f***s gave me percs in pill form well low and behold a week and half in it ripped through the wound and I had to go back under. All in all 4 and a half weeks recovering. It was some of the most painful s**t of my life I lost like 25lbs bc I couldn't eat. All that said I'd do it again tomorrow. Loved working with the kids and my coworkers, but admin clearly didn’t care and expected us to solve institutional issues with no budget, no training, no plan. Then COVID hit and all those problems exploded even more. I had some technical background from working theaters, so I went to trade school for low voltage electronics and a friend helped me get my apprenticeship at an Audio/Video company. You can try to plant a vegetable garden but the animals have other plans, mainly helping themselves to the food!

That's okay. If you have a decently green thumb, there'll be more than enough to go around. It's cool seeing the animals. And just the act of planting the garden itself, working in the dirt with your hands and the plants and seeds, and watching them grow, can be therapeutic enough. For me, anyway.

I can't afford the extra water bill, and the raccoons and opossums eat all of my tomatoes. No garden for me.

I'm growing two varieties of potato this year, also garlic and herbs. I would love an allotment, but I know perfectly well that getting my sorry árse across the other side of town wouldn't happen. So pots it is. Oh, and I bought a jalapeno plant this afternoon

Hip replacement. Should have done it before I retired from the Army. Oh well. It WAY improved my bowling average.

Your bowling average? Not being able to walk without a cane, no more chronic pain, etc, and you're impressed by how it improved your bowling average? Bowl to your heart's desire my friend, while I go and enjoy a simple walk.

Getting my wisdom teeth out, got the the point I didn't eat much due to Pain of chewing. My first steak afterwards was the most delicious meal ever. Rhinoplasty for a severely deviated septum that I thought was a chronic infection. For years I couldn't breathe from my nose. I now breathe and sleep like a baby.

Drinking seltzer water while drinking beer. Your brain thinks it's alcoholic because it comes in a can and it's carbonated, so you'll pound those suckers right down between beers. Keeps you hydrated, and I've never had a hangover while doing this.

Wearing earplugs in everyday life. I can still hear people talking to me, but my misophonia isn't triggered so much, and I don't get sensory overload anymore, either.

I do this too. And at the grocery store sometimes, I wear earbuds, and play music, to drown everything else out. It really does help.

So many women should be taking iron supplement and aren't. If you are low you can't get enough from just eating meat sometimes. It causes all sorts of weird health issues

I kinda get this with vit b as well. I'm not vegetarian, but i don't eat meat all the time either, sometimes my lips start to crack and when i start taking vit b religiously they heal up again (i should take it all the time, maybe, but follow-through is something i struggle with a lot)

A meal subscription. I would spend so much of my week anxious about what to eat, tiptoeing around my partner's and my pickiness, grocery shopping, and cooking. A weight was lifted when I started using a subscription even just three nights a week.

I have a Chihuahua, he'd try to kill it, but wouldn't be very successful. It sure would be funny watching him try though.

I was spending an hour every week de'hairing the brush, cleaning the ball wheel like an old computer mouse, removing the hair from the yellow twirling brush. Roombas are a waste of a lot of money

Hydrocortisone. I had an undiagnosed autoimmune disease where my adrenal glands don't make cortisol, and basically I was unable to catch my breath for months and my blood pressure was zero and I'd get lightheaded from just standing. Took myself to the hospital where they s**t me up with hydrocortisone and I immediately felt normal.

Back in highschool, I joined the robotics team senior year. It improved my life SO MUCH. The fact that I had much less time in my day made me have to have a weekly schedule, made by me, detailing daily routines in and out of school. This led to me trying to follow these routines as better as possible. The result was a healthier social life, me getting my first girlfriend, daily exercise (unless I stayed in the robotics lab for way too long, which happened a couple of times), and much less worrying about things, and my grades were feeling better too. Sadly... My senior year were the Fall 2019/Spring 2020 semesters... My streak lasted until March 2020. Then the robotics team bad complications, I could no longer go to the Gym, I broke up with my girlfriend, my grades started plummeting, almost all the universities I applied to started sending Rejection letters, etc. I'm better now, and I've tried replicating the thing I did with the schedule, but I have failed twice already.

I still use Pandora, and I don't pay, but I don't mind the ads. I grew up in the 80s, so it's like listening to regular radio, for me. A few songs, then a couple short ads, lather, rinse, repeat. YouTube however, is a whole different thing. WAY too many ads, AND they interrupt your video for them. I get that that's like old TV programming. But when a 15 minute video is interrupted three or more times, with two or three 3 minute unskippable ads each time, it becomes a bit much, and very annoying!!
