You should be drinking celery juice every morning. You must avoid dairy at all costs, but if you want to make your coffee healthier, you should put a spoonful of butter into it. Fruit should be the majority of your diet, but carbs are evil and will cause you health problems. You should go keto if you want to lose weight, but eating foods with a lot of fat is dangerous. You should be using essential oils every day, but the only way you can truly be healthy inside and out is if you have the proper crystals displayed around your home.

When it comes to what is actually healthy, there’s a lot of contradictory information floating around out there. So how are we to know what is safe and what isn’t? After all, some doctors used to recommend smoking cigarettes less than a hundred years ago.

One curious Reddit user recently asked, “What’s something most people think is healthy today that future people will shake their heads at?”, and thousands of people called out common dietary advice, lifestyle practices and habits in the replies. Below, we’ve gathered some of their most thought-provoking responses, so be sure to upvote the things you are wary of as well. Then let us know in the comments what else you think will be viewed as unhealthy in the future, and if you’re interested in checking out another Bored Panda article debunking food and nutrition myths, you can find that right here.

I feel like we are living in bizzaro world where medicine and clinical science is considered hogwash. Are mistakes made and has money clouded decisions? Of course. But the foundation is there. If nothing else trust in that.

The same people that question science are the same people who benefit from science in their everyday lives ... Science, like most things should be questioned, but Facebook research isn't the same as a medical professional whose dedicated their entire life to researching a specific scientific field - such as immunology or infectious diseases...

It started because some asshat doctor decided vaccines cause autism. Wrote a whole paper on it and it became this huge thing. Years later he walked it back saying it was all fake but anti-vaxers like to keep that last bit out of their narrative. Then you have people like Jenny McCarthy (not a scientist or doctor) writing books about how their child has autism and it was caused by vaccines. We get vaccinations as young children, starting in infancy and continuing through preschool and so on. Well ages 3-4 are usually when a child is diagnosed with autism. So people think it’s related. But correlation does not equal causation and that is the thing people fail to realize. Edit for typos.

My sister has an perfect example why you should talk to your doctors and nurses when you have concerns. My nephew was born at 32 weeks, when he had his first set of combined vaccines, 2 months after he was born, he did not tolerate them very well (high fever, vomiting extremely fussy). So when the doctors wanted to do the next set my sister refused and asked if they could split them up - at first the doctor refused, saying all his patients got the vaccines this way. Luckily the nurse acknowledged my sisters concerns and talked with my sister and than explained to the doctor that my sister didn't just became an AntiVaxx Parent, that she is just worried because of how he reacted the first time. They were able to create a plan for my nephews vaccinations that he was able to tolerate much better.

Much more important: don't dismiss everyone who has a concern as a nonhuman. Openness starves the conspiracy peddler of oxygen and ensures the flow of information for better decisions. For instance: It's not a matter of whether the vaccine is 100.0000% safe. It's a matter of whether the harm is greater than the harm of more common or more severe COVID infections. But when hard data is replaced by anecdotes, outliers and maybe even urban legend, compliance will go DOWN. People, especially in democracies, need confidence that policy-makers are responsive to data, not threatened by it.

Considering we live in a time where information is at your finger tips for everything people should be embracing vaccines and running towards eradicating all diseases. Instead we have a society of people becoming more and more ignorant about something so simple.

Sure, but now you have a second job and no hobby. A job that comes with monetary expectations, sometimes even a schedule, and a pressure to perform. To have one more of that, you sacrificed the thing that allowed you to blow off steam and to recover your mental energies. Whether or not it is a good thing is up to personal choice, to me it was not.

I applaud this notion completely. I unfortuantely was persuaded to turn my most favorite hobby and pastime into a business. Even though it has become successful and fun, it took away the creative joy i received from doing it. Now it is deadlines, material acquisition, book balancing and many others. Don't let capitalism win, keep your hobbies.

Agreed, although being able to earn from something you enjoy can give you more time to focus on it and make it feel less like 'work'. Perhaps create your art exactly how you wish, but put prints for sale on a website; fairly low investment and would be satisfying when people liked your work enough to buy it. Or maybe teach art too? Although depends how much one enjoys their day job.

Honestly, this is dumb. When you believe something is good for you - being religious or non-religious, it depends on your preference - you naturally want to share with your kids. And even if you don't want teach them about it, it will still influence them. We shouldn't deny that it has to happen and learn a good way to do it instead.

Thank you! People are so quick to call things child abuse or indoctrination when it’s really just parents raising their child. Parents have to make decisions for kids to a certain point. It’s a difficult line to walk but it is possible to raise your child in a religion without indoctrinating them. I was raised Christian. I don’t feel I was indoctrinated and when I moved away from my parents my faith grew and changed because I was able to learn from others. My dad is a minister and we have had amazing conversations around faith and religion and he listens to what I say. It makes me sad that the church has ruined this for so many people. Sad to know that some people have had such horrible experiences that they denounced religion altogether.

Religion is like sex. (Now that I have your attention...) The important decisions about it (and acting on those decisions) don't happen when you're a young child. But when the time comes, your parents should have fully (and deeply) informed you about it.

This is a hard one - how do you separate your lifestyle in a religion from caring for your child? So many religions are cult like\ extreme that it may be impossible even though it needs to happen.

I agree, I think you are outside the capacity to teach your child to make up their own mind about a belief if you are yourself indoctrinated in a certain belief or cult. We end up in a vicious circle of blaming the victim when we judge how indoctrinated people raise their children. Honestly, it's a tough one but I remain optimistic that exposure to better ways of living will win over some of these victims, especially if they have been able to maintain a compassionate conscience.

While I understand that indoctrination of children about whatever is fundamentally wrong, I think it's difficult if not impossible not to teach a child any kind of moral. Every human being had it inside themselves, a common sense of what it's right and what it's wrong (except maybe for people with some psychological/behavioural disorder, but those are recognized diseases that need treatment). I think it's enough to teach children to be tolerant and open minded with any kind of diversity, so if growing up they disagree with your concept of right and wrong, it would be easier for them making the adjustment with what they consider not true anymore.

Morals are not the same as religion. Children in irreligious families don't necessarily become immoral adults. And teaching children to be open-minded is basically opposite of indoctrinating them to a certain religion.

Indoctrinating children about any kind of moral behavior (e.g., any discrimination) before they´re old enough to use abstract reasoning and decide by themshelves. The paradoxical aspect of the answer is that, according to it, we should not indoctrinate them about what we consider "healthy" till they can decide by themselves if our perspective is more or less right or wrong, or if right or wrong, or healthy, it even exists,

    Libstak

Discrimination is immoral, not moral. There are behaviours that children need to learn if they are going to function in a community with other people. Morals such as respect, honesty, kindness and compassion toward others are important.

Here's the truth about it: the second it comes in contact with your stomach acid, it's not gonna be alkaline anymore. “What’s Something Most People Think Is Healthy Today That Future People Will Shake Their Heads At?” (45 Answers) A part of "fat acceptance." While, of course, everyone deserves respect, regardless of size, the idea that being very overweight is a healthful lifestyle, is just wrong. Sure, most of the bodily harm of obesity won't catch up to you, until later in life. But it WILL catch up to you. I've been overweight most of my life. While I'm generally healthy, my knees have paid the price, of supporting the extra poundage. Don't fool yourself into thinking you'll escape the bodily harm of long term obesity.

I wish society could acknowledge that being obese is not healthy, and accept and welcome people who are obese, without shaming or discriminating. Being cruel to people doesn't make them lose weight, or help them make healthy choices. It is very hard to sustain a lifestyle of self-dicipline, exercise and healthy eating, while you're being bombarded with judgement, disapproval and disgust every day. I was obese through my teens and twenties, and desperately wanted to lose weight. It's hard. It's harder when you have low self-esteem and everyone around you is expecting you to fail.

I hate this. No one seems to get it. ACCEPTANCE IS NOT CALLING IT HEALTHY. There may be some people out there who confuse the two, but don’t for a second think a genuinely obese person sees themselves as healthy. The acceptance part is wanting to.walk down a damn street without being laughed at or being able to have the same clothes available in stores that skinny people do. As you can tell, this comes from years of personal experience. I went up and down in my weight so many times I lost count. You ARE treated differently when bigger.

Fat acceptance is something entirely different than seeing it as a healthy lifestyle. Never ever have I seen it being promoted like that (but might be different elsewhere in the world). Fat acceptance means that people who are fat are accepted instead of ridiculed or called names. That they exist in the same space as everyone else and deserve to be there. That they would like to see how clothes would fit them. It is also about what we see when we look around us and what we see when we look in a magazine or when we want to buy clothing: it does/did not represent the world around us. I was a bit chubby not so long ago. No one ever said to me that I looked healthy or something like that. I have read this before, where does this come from???

Obese people are not here for you to joke about and laugh at. Obese people are not dumb. They're not lazy or failures, they are human beings and deserving of respect and inclusion. Obese people are in pain (physically and psychologically), often exhausted and on medication like insulin that can make hunger worse and weight-loss harder. Obese people are aware of the health problems and the importance of losing weight because their doctors never shut up about it, so they don't need your uneducated input as well. Body positivity is about breaking out of the prison our society/culture has built into our minds that you have to weight so many pounds in order to be happy and deserving of love. That's why we have a collective fear of becoming fat or being seen with those who are. It's all trash! Be kind and get to know someone who is obese. You'll find they are wonderful/loving/fun/passionate people who are not the sum of their looks.

I have struggled with my weight for most of my life for various reasons. I was made fun of for being a little overweight. I have been made to feel like less of a person. So yes, we should respect people regardless of their size. HOWEVER, this doesn't mean that it's okay to be fat. As said above it is not healthy and will catch up to you! I have worked hard to lose weight and am down 150 pounds but still have 40-50 to go to be at a healthy weight. It's hard work but worth it. Your health is worth the hard work!!!!

Nobody is claiming that being obese is healthy, except those who misrepresent 'fat acceptance' so they can go on treating fat people like s**t for the crime of being fat. It's easier than admitting that there are plenty of reasons for someone to be fat, and even at worst, if someone is fat because they can't be bothered to eat healthily and exercise, they still are deserving of basic human decency and respect, PERIOD.

I think it's interesting that among all the ways a person can be unhealthy, being fat is the one people feel just fine about being judgmental about. It's called concern trolling and it's just a way for people to judge fat people without admitting they just think they're unattractive.

I think, along with this, there also has to be an understanding that not everyone can do something about being overweight. My friends youngest sister has a thyroid condition that keeps the weight on her. She can't take aggressive medication for it because it will interact with other medications she's on for behavioral issues. Keeping her a functioning part of society is more important than keeping her thin. My son also has a medication that he is on which has the side effect of weight gain. So don't assume that someone who is obese is that way from sheer laziness and lack of willpower. Understand that some people can't help it.

Been there. Was on drugs that caused an underactive thyroid. Doctors told me the drugs affected my appetite but I didn't feel any different, I wasn't eating any differently. Yet fatter I got. Then I gave up. I couldn't lose the weight so thought might as well eat the food anyway - yet I didn't get any fatter despite guzzling chocolate! Then I had to come off the drugs because of a different health issue and other drugs were needed that would have interacted badly. Slowly the weight came off... then fast because I went back to eating how I'd always done. Stayed off those drugs and the weight stayed off. Later found out that they caused an underactive thyroid and it had not been my fault or in my control at all. Some people can't help it!!

I don't know if this is really related but my wife has been hesitant to lose weight because she thinks I have a fetish for bigger women... but I just have a fetish for her. Every time she has gained or lost weight I've found women with similar body types to be the most visually arousing. I let her know this and her work out routine started the next day

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against sugar (in fact I probably eat too much myself), I'm just tired of people justifying it because its "natural". Asbestos is natural, but that ain't good for you.

When at Uni I had to write an essay on "why do people do continue to do cr@ppy jobs" For a fair proportion it was solely for the paypacket, but actually, quite a few said it was for the cameraderie and friendship circle that made the days pass more quickly. Lots of other reasons too but the other main one was 'not qualified for anything else'

It's only been pretty recent that we actually get to complain about work as unfulfilling. For most of history it was either work or die, or own all the land and money and make your subjects/serfs/servants work or die. Actually not liking a job and changing what you do is really a brand new thing in the timeline of our species.

But we need certain tasks to be undertaken and people to perform them - not EVERY job can be fulfilling and not EVERY job can be richly rewarding emotionally or financially. We need cleaners, people to look after how elderly, plumbers who unblock toilets, those who sit behind desks adding up, shelf fillers etc... We do these job not because we WANT to but because they are exactly what they are - JOBS to pay bills. Seriously think this 'anti-employment' ethos is getting ridiculous...

It's not anti employment, it's about being payed enough to live and treated with human dignity. Every job you mentioned, forgot teachers, gets paid and treated like s**t. Plumber might be an exception, if in a union, but those are under attack everyday. You should look up how many homeless people have JOBS.

I went from being a regular classroom teacher to a substitute teacher so I can work as little as I can to where I can still get by. I want to spend as much time with my kids as I can while they are growing up. Having my own classroom meant not only a 40 hour work week, but tons of teaching work to complete after hours and at home from lesson plans to grades to meetings. I was spending more time and energy on other people’s children than on my own. Also with being a sub I can pick and choose what days I work and what days I don’t either far in advance or on the fly.

This has always been a weird thing in my mind. It seems like our society goes out of its way to create jobs that are essentially meaningless because... well, everyone needs to work. But then, at the same time, puts up barriers to working because... well, not everyone is cut out for this kind of work... that's meaningless.

“What’s Something Most People Think Is Healthy Today That Future People Will Shake Their Heads At?” (45 Answers) Vaping instead of smoking. You're still filling your lungs with stuff that shouldn't be there in the end. Looks like more research is coming out about the risks too. It's not as bad as smoking, but it's got its own issues. It's fine if you're using vapes and e-cigs to quit smoking, but it's gone beyond that for quite some time now. Many people just exchanged one habit for the other.

Coming from personal experience, I used vaping to quit smoking. I had smoked for close to twenty years, and vaping helped me quit. Quitting smoking isn't just about cigarettes. It's about habits and brain chemistry as well. It has been 4 months since I quit nicotine, I still vape a zero nicotine juice, it's just another habit I'm slowly breaking. Is vaping bad? Depends on the circumstances.

💯 I was in the the same boat as you a couple years ago. I’m glad it’s working for you! Vapes help wean down nicotine while still scratching the hand-to-mouth itch that comes with a smoking habit. So much more effective than a patch or gum!

Still good as a replacement. I know there are lots of studies to disprove the myth it isn’t harmful at all, but I believe that tobacco lobby is doing everything they can to trivialize the fact how dangerous smoking really is and prove how dangerous vaping is (it’s IMHO only due to laws they even admit smoking kills). If vaping was half as bad as cigarettes, we WOULD hear daily about it by now.

Infant circumcision is objectively no different than insisting parents have to choose whether their children get to keep their adult teeth, or have them invasively excavated at birth. It's just not something that ever needs to be done to a child.

There are medical reasons sometimes, especially different kinds of phimosis. Doing it for aesthetic reasons does not make any sense. Neither makes religious circumcision (from a strictly rational point of view), but it made sense once when the overall hygienic conditions were much worse to prevent infections.

Let’s at least call it what it is: male genital mutilation. If a boy grows up and wants to cut off a part of his penis, that’s a decision he can make. My parents allowed me to make that choice and after 42 years, I still don’t see a reason to mutilate my own body. Thanks Mum and Dad!

Not to mention, infants and young children have been known to die from blood loss from being genitally mutilated. That and the outdated "they can't feel it/are too young to remember" bs. There is a documentary called "The elephant in the hospital" specifically about MGM and how horrific it is. I am absolutely an "intactivist". Not many people know that in Judaism, it actually was quite literally just the absolute smallest bit off the tip and somehow it morphed into butchering off the entire foreskin. There are so many myths that have been proven false about MGM (like "bUT it'S CLeaNer". How is letting a fresh wound sit in a diaper full of waste cleaner? "BaBIes DoN't FEel iT. THe cRyInG is fRoM bEinG HeLd dOwN" They absolutely do! I'm sure one would feel having their eyelid cut off without anesthetic. "We CaN't AnEsTheTize BaBies" We sure can, as many have had major surgery days old, like on the heart or other internals. Dosing for small bodies has been around for ages.)

The endless dismissive false equivalencies people use to diminish the severity and impact of circumcision are so infuriatingly lazy. The "parents make decisions for their children all the time that they don't like" is such a bad-faith response to shutting down the discussion. As a humanist, all of the arguments for infant circumcision are equally absurd. To me the notion that it's up to the "parents to decide" whether to permanently alter someone else's body is so perplexing. As far as bodily autonomy is concerned, I would have exactly the same reaction people asserted if it was up to "parents to decide" whether their children should have their adult teeth or not. It's just not. These are choices to be made only by the person to whom the body belongs.

I wonder who or what started male circumcison for "hygiene". I only had one BF to whom it was done as a baby he was not a fan, to put it midly, and none of the others had hygiene issues.

Idk, but I used to help take care of the young babies in a school I went to. It was terrible seeing the amount of pain the recently circumcised babies went through during diaper changes and hearing them screaming, and then their dressing on their sensitive parts having to be changed and carefully cleaned. I think one baby ended up with an infection. They still need to pee and poop, and be sitting in diapers. Absolutely terrible.

This is mutilation, serves no purpose and does not prevent disease. Any unnecessary operation comes with risks of infection. It's not permitted here except for strictly medical reasons..

The right wingers in the US have been throwing such a transphobic tizzy fit lately calling gender affirming care (including but not limited to) the "genital mutilation of children." I am *somehow* not at all surprised that I have yet to hear any of them recognize that circumcision without medical necessity IS genital mutilation. Honestly, why can't they be bothered to take a moment to learn about anything before they open their mouths and vomit BS on anyone who will listen?

It's really ironic to hear MTG railing against "mutilating the genitals of children" referring to gender affirmation, knowing that she is probably 1000% in favor of infant circumcision on boys....

Circumcision is and has always been performed with the specific objectives of diminishing sexual gratification and making it harder to masturbate. That needs to be a part of informed consent for prospective parents. Circumcision is an ethical and societal black eye that our country has been uncomfortable talking about for over a century, but it's indefensible. Real, authentic talk about the impacts this practice has had on millions is more than overdue!

Replacing plastic with glass seems sensible until you do the math. The amount of excess energy used to transport all that weight of glass would be quite astonishing. Of course much more work needs to be done on how to sustainably use plastics, but a return to glass is actually a very poor solution to the problem.

My wife has been feeling really bad about the plastic waste in her hospital. I told her that is one instance of single use plastic that is fine by me. It's the best solution for sterility vs cost that I'm aware of and doesn't make up nearly the plastic waste that some groups want you to believe. Sure eventually we need to address it, but I think there are bigger offenders out there that will have a bigger impact if addressed

The people who created plastic won't even allow it into their homes. BTW, recycling it isn't what you think. Only about 9% of all the plastic - ever made - has been recycled. Every plastic bag you have ever used is still in existence somewhere.

We need better recycling for plastic. That would solve two problems in one. Plastic is waterproof, paper and fabric is not. A paper or fabric bag is useless in countries that have high rainfall like the UK or India.

Not necessarily, it might just be more noticeable. My attention span has always been bad when the task at hand is boring. Before I had my phone I used to space out and just get lost in my head for a few minutes, whereas now when I start to lose focus I pull out my phone. Nobody would notice if I zoned out before, but they certainly notice when I reach for my phone.

Second week it is not that bad anymore, but you will still feel flat. Third week you will notice that you smile more. Fourth week you will find out that you have less problems with agreeing with other people. Coffee is making you paranoid. If you want to test this, get super strong coffee and drink a lot, you will see.

“What’s Something Most People Think Is Healthy Today That Future People Will Shake Their Heads At?” (45 Answers) From a doctor’s perspective, half of the US health food industry is absolute garbage. 1. Supplements. What’s in them? They aren’t regulated, so anything could be! Many studies have found a lack of actual advertised product at best, harmless filler such as saw dust commonly, and heavy metal and other toxin contamination such as lead and arsenic at worst. All for the cheap price of $$$$$ and your health. Is it possible that some could be helpful for specific things? Yup! But are most things on the shelf going to fit in that category? Absolutely not, no. 2. Most “diet” plans/snacks/products. Low in fat but high in sugar? Serving size of 1/4 of what is sold? Contains some mysterious fruit “scientifically shown” to combat the laws of physics? A laxative in disguise? Most of these plans are just like get rich quick schemes. They are sold to provide a quick path to a healthier and better life. But diet isn’t a quick fix. It’s a slow combination of everyday habits. Diet culture is a toxic scam and their advertisements are sickening both for the lies commonly told and the mental health toll on the targeted audience. Hell, most of the “good choice” food items at the grocery could be considered unhealthy processed garbage. 3. Fruit juice. Despite what Steve Jobs believed, fruit juices are pure sugar in a glass. Calories with limited nutrient content and a high glycemic load. 4. The way we teach physical activity. We use sports as a competition and filter kids out, only supporting the best of the best financially and through school programs. But the reality is that team and club sports can keep people active and engaged in their communities for life. This is healthy. If we can foster low-level skill sports for everyone we will have healthier and happier communities. Except for maybe American football. That s**t will give you brain injuries.

Eat proper healthy foods, stop buying processed, sugary foods and do something physical every day if only just going for a walk...that is a good 'diet'. I never got the keto diet...soooo much fat. I knew someone who went on it, lost weight and felt better, but as soon as she went off the diet, boom.. weight is back...so one has to keep eating all those rich fatty foods forever more? Though I did drool at some of the keto foods and recipes. Also, a tip when shopping, all the healthier food is on the outside of the aisles...stay out of the aisles unless you need baking products like flour, etc..most of it is all processed food.

Supplements are not pre approved by the FDA (neither are beauty products) but they will pull something from the market or fine a company if they find it's dangerous or that the seller is making unproven claims about disease cures. Also there are plenty of supplement manufacturers who are 3rd party tested and use certified good manufacturing practices. Like anything it involves being an informed consumer. I hate it when we all or nothing an industry. There's a lot of lead in commonly sold lipstick brands for instance and the entire industry often makes unscientific claims and is filled with products with known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. And it's not like previously FDA approved pharmaceuticals haven't been pulled from the market for being dangerous. Heck about 10-30% of medications are prescribed off label. That means they're being used in a way that doesn't have sufficient studies.

Nobody needs a new phone unless it's like not repairable after being broken. The other reason is if it's no longer supported for security reasons. Like when LG stopped producing, but they're still providing security support for the next few years. It's a shame though as they're a good company.

Following a healthy diet and exercise regiment is important. And having lazy or cheat days is very important for mental health. Hell, if you need a cheat month go for it, just don't let sedentary life and poor diet become the normal. Or do, who am I to tell you what to do

Because it is ADDICTIVE! Sugar whether it’s is added or from refined carbohydrates INCREASES appetite. The brain releases Dopamine, a feel good hormone, the body/brain becomes addicted to the sugar intake. Glucose Fructose is another one. It’s in everything, sauces, a lot of cereals, processed foods, fast foods, juices, etc. It is recognized by the body as a far, as in it has the same effect- high blood pressure, high cholesterol, premature aging. greater hunger, more fat cell production….

Ironically most essential oil users avoid the oils that actually have some "real" active ingredients like cineol (in eucalyptus oil), menthol (in mint oil) or terpinen (tea tree oil) for being "too aggressive". Also oils should NEVER be used instead of actual medical care.

Agreed. Tea tree oil, for example, it good for external stuff like dandruff and acne (for some people), and lavender really is calming to a lot of people and other animals, but they are positively not a viable substitute for actual medical care.

Essential oils like almost Complementary Medicine(key is in the name, people) are supposed to be used AS WELL as conventional medicine, never instead of. When I was being given chemo + radical radiotherapy(double the normal dose) drugs to battle cancer, I used essential oils and health tonics to keep my energy levels up and my mood stable. Without them, I probably wouldn't have managed to keep my mindset positive and would have ended up with long term depression/fatigue as well.

Supplements, Complementary, and Alternative Medicines (SCAM) are not "supposed" to be used. They are pseudoscience. If you benefited from the placebo effect, that's great, but they should not ever be used in place of "real" medicine, or recommended by "real" doctors. (Naturopaths, chiropractors, etc. don't count.)

I have thought the same though about breathing in those oils..are they coating my lungs?? I use my diffuser sparingly because of this. In my city the grade schools start at 8:20, the middle school at 7:40 and highschool at 8:50. On Thursdays there's an early release for young kids but a late start for older kids. I assume some of the schedule is to coordinate buses but the city did try for later starts for younger kids and the community resoundly rejected it. Pretty hard to get a kid to school when you've got to be to work.

Research has shown that from early teens, early starts are actually unhelpful. Teens are more likely to learn from lunch to evening times. I believe some schools in the UK tried to change hours for GCSE (O and A) pupils. However, in secondary schools here, most teachers teach their subject to all the years, so the teachers had to do inordinately long days with 'free periods' when the older classes weren't in.

Surely someone could create a schedule that allows teachers to work early or later shift?(not all teachers are early birds) Would be beneficial in a number of ways, e.g. take the pressure off transport systems and road usage.

It’s extremely easy to get addicted to soda. It’s cheap, it has large amount of sugar our body craves and it does not “feel” like so unhealty when consumed. Few weeks ago i bought 24 cans of coke and must admit I almost didn’t drink anything else until it disapeared. And I’m someone who is used to drink tap water since I was young. Cannot imagine growing up drinking just soda and trying to rid of the habit…

I'm not gluten intolerant but I have to limit my wheat intake because otherwise my digestive system stops working very well. It's painful, I end up with vitamin deficiencies, and I lose blood. Even wheat grass does it to me. I get why people are annoyed with the trend but I'm thankful for all of the food options. When I started almost 20 years ago the alternative options were awful. I disagree - simply because the popularity of gluten free food means supermarkets are sticking a better range and local restaurants have really good gluten free menu's. My son has coeliac disease. More options mean he can live a more normal life, we can have family meals out etc.

Idk about this one. My grandma, dad and brother are all gluten intolerant but none of them have celiacs that I know of, my sister has an autoimmune disorder and could eat gluten but it makes her joints swell, and my mom doesn't eat gluten because she tends to have more energy when eating gluten-free. I'm the only person in my household who eats gluten. They all have different reasons for it, but all those reasons are valid for not eating gluten.

Which chiropractic manipulation can put a herniated disc back in? Modern medicine would be amazed to see that. I have five, and "adjustments" made them worse. The only treatment one chiropractor did of any help was traction. And you can get that from a Physical therapist and have insurance pay for it. Plus many chiropractors want to sell you a ton of useless supplements.

The first time I ever went to a chiropractor for severe upper back pain (couldn't raise my arms over my head bad) he did an x-ray first thing. A section of my spine was stuck sideways. The only things the doctors did was give me muscle relaxants. Chiropractor popped that vertebrae back in place and it was such a relief! You just have to find the right one for you.

Prof Edzard Ernst - UK emeritus prof of complimentary medicine, now retired, wrote a paper comparing the efficacy of physio v osteopathey v chiropraxis. Physio came out on top, and was 10% enhanced if used in conjunction with acupuncture (result was fewer days off work) osteopathy was 'neutral (same no of days off but psychologically you felt better as you were helping yourself) Chiropraxis was found to lengthen the absence and 'could lead to serious life altering injury'. So yeah, science backs you up there.

My dad has severe back pain and after steroid shots, surgery, and doctors throwing meds at him the things that actually made the pain bearable were chiropractic adjustments and marijuana creams. There are definitely chiropractors who are anti-vax and don't believe in masks, who will peddle things that are expensive and not useful but let's not pretend like there aren't medical doctors who prescribe meds that interact negatively or have major side effects or that medical gaslighting and harm isn't a thing. My dad' was prescribed gabapentin for his pain initially and while taking it he had frequent falls because it created balance issues. His doctor told us that wasn't a thing and to stay on it. This! If a chiropractor is anti-vax, then you have talked to a shitty chiropractor. My chiropractor would never make such claims. Meanwhile just this year I left the practice of my my board-certified Neurologist who tried to convince me that Covid was a hoax and I never really had it. 🙄

You say that like no one is ever injured by conventional medical treatment. I chose my chiropractor because she does not do a certain adjustment that can be dangerous. Granted, not everyone seems to respond to chiropractic adjustments but I do and it's not in my mind.

... each and every pseudomedicine. Homopathetic medication is the same kind, usually not dangerous in itself, but by preventing people from seeking actual treatment that's based on evidence and knowledge, but is systematically degraded by those quacks and snakeoil salesmen, often to a point in which seriously sick people, having, say, cancer or so, refuse any actual treatment, but prefer insanely diluted horse turd or something, and then, miraculously, suffer from cancer not being inhibited the least by abovementioned c**p. All this stuff, should end due to people having a basic education - not meaning everyone shall be an actual MD, but just reason and logic guiding a well-informed choice of a patient who is not brainwashed into applying magic tricks to serious disease and expecting to be healed ... that expected too much? Then, the quacks' abilities in deceiving and seducing people are to be exceeded by real doctors. Hell, whatever makes people not chose magic and death over science and life, is exactly what the current situation calls for.

Chiropractic doctors are not gods. They're like every other doctor. If you go, get a good one. I was diagnosed with scoliosis in 7th grade. Luckily my mother refused to take me to a surgeon and took me to a Chiropractor. It took several years, but he took my S-curve and got it to a near perfect back.

“What’s Something Most People Think Is Healthy Today That Future People Will Shake Their Heads At?” (45 Answers) Social media. I'm being super hypocritical, but we're gonna look back on social media today the same way our parents looked back on the time they smoked and said "yeah, everybody smoked back then, it really wasn't a big deal. Yeah, we knew it wasn't good for you, but we still did it anyway. No, we didn't think of it as some sort of addiction; we just did it because that's what people did back then."

I doubt this one. The apps and platforms we use will change, but not the habit itself. People are social creatures, first we had penpals, then we talked in forums, then chatroom apps and then BAM social media made things easy. Sure we probably won't use twitter/instagram/whatever 20 years from now, but there will be something.

I truly believe that the internet and social media can, eventually, lead to the downfall of society. Both give too many truly unbalanced and sociopaths a place to go to to compare notes and cause harm. Such as, the horrific websites where sadistic pedophiles swap videos and pics of them committing their horrific crimes! Where does it end??!! :(

Social media has many valuable uses when done properly. I moved 5300 miles to another country. FB is how I keep in touch with friends and family who are now far away. It's how I am learning about things around me in my new home country. It's how I meet and keep in touch with people in my new country. I am picky about my friends list and the groups I join. They serve me well. If they don't, I eliminate them.

I think it will continue to exist but in a different form. I also believe that AI will help to prevent weirdos and hate speech on it - no doubt the definition of those will be much fought over. It's hard to imagine the future when you have no idea of the massive steps that will be taken and how they can be used. A hundred years time will look SO different to today, but hopefully for the better, certainly things are better now than the 1920s..

What bothers me about social media is that people used to take photographs because they wanted to remember special moments in their life and hold onto them. Now it seems like people are editing their wedding photos to make their teeth whiter or their waist smaller just in case some ex looks them up on Facebook.

Totally agree with this. Sometimes I feel like most people go somewhere not for their own enjoyment but for the photos in social media. I get angry with this because such culture ruins beautiful landmarks. On the other side it's kind of sad doing things only for people's approval.

They’ll never go back to school anyways 2. “The school was torture in my days, so why should anyone have better experience?” 3. “More young with good educations mean higher chance someone will steal my job”

We need the system though. Kids can't all study from home because there might not be anyone to watch them. Sending them to school means they get to study in an environment with minimal distractions and appropriate supervision. We need to improve the education system definitely, and the social experience of schools need to be tweaked, but we need our children to go to class and sit at school 5 days a week.

It's babysitting, basically. We need somewhere to park the kids so that both adults can work soul-killing 9 to 5 jobs. Parenting conflicts with that, so the kids must be removed.

If the education system was different then my stress would go down. I’m on the verge of tears every time homework is assigned as i just need to plan out my evening and the homework is just eating up my time till dinner time after which I just get ready to sleep. With all that homework I rarely get time to go out of my house for even a short walk. The weekends invite more homework and more stress so I never enjoy holidays. I don’t look forward to sitting in a classroom as still as possible and listen to a teacher for 8 hours for 5 days a week

I don't think it's a problem as long as there is a good, age-appropriate balance between academic skills and social/emotional skills. Littles should play, older kids should get practical life skills lessons and social time.

Before the internet, they had TV. Before that, they had magazines. Before magazines, they had radio. As a parent, I can assure you that it is impossible to give kids your undivided attention. If we spent all day with them, the house would be a mess, there would be no food on the table, no clean clothes, and no bills paid. Being a parent is more than playtime.

When we were kids in the 70's, my Grandparents would take us on vacation. They complained that we always had our noses in comic books. When my niece was young, my mom took her on vacation and complained that she always on her phone or tablet. That said, none of that should be a baby sitter. TV for us, Internet now.

Kids will get their hands on it eventually, from somewhere. My mom tried doing this sheltered parenting method on me. Didn't stop me from going to a friends house watching her horror movies, or watching porn at a friend's babysitting gig (when the kiddo was sleeping), and how to snort pixie stix like coke from a group of popular kids at school. I had an AOL messenger account before I was allowed to know we had internet at home because I just accessed it at someone else's house and chatted with strangers. Now my parenting method was actually communicating with my daughter about stuff and keeping an open-mind, open door policy. I didn't know everything she got into, but based on what she's told me and the things she's gone through, that girl has her head on straight and can make good decisions.

When I was a kid, my mom wouldn't let me watch certain age-restricted movies. It also had a password on the decoder so any age-restricted content would ask for a password. See however could not control what games I played on the computer (this was before I had access to the internet/ was uncommon to have in households). By the time internet access became common, I was already 16/ 17 years old. I Agree with this post that something needs to be done to limit children's unrestricted access to the internet, like a complete limit set across the browser. It's way too easy to come across porn/ morbid information.

I remember one on YouTube. At no point did the person show the windows of his apartment, but since the window was open, the commentators were able to tell which street he lived on, based on the sound of the tram and the schedule. He was still impressed by people's creepy stalking skills, even though he said he would keep the window closed in the future.

Yeah, my niece used to go in to some pretty nasty tantrums that only a smack on her leg or back of hand would bring her out of. Nothing that would leave lasting pain - just a sharp, quick feeling to divert her attention from whatever mental spiral she was in. My mom used to get smacked around by her oldest sib with a wooden spoon, so she was never a fan of serious corporal punishment.

If you hot a stranger- it’s assault. If you hit your partner- it’s domestic violence. If you hit your kid- it’s…. Loving discipline?! That logic doesn’t make any sense to me. If your child is too young to reason with, then they are too young to understand why you are hitting them. If they are old enough to reason with- why the hell are you hitting them?!

❤️ exactly. I admit I slapped my daughters hand once when she was having an uncharacteristic moment and she didn’t react by just ‘snapping out it’. She reacted by being extremely upset that I hit her and kept telling me I hurt her and must’ve been a mistake (she had no concept of hitting as discipline). Never again. I got hit as a kid and hard. My mom is now deeply ashamed and gets pretty emotional about she just did what society told her and how it was expected at the time.

It's bullying. It doesn't instill respect it only promotes fear and not really learning the lesson (not too different than domestic assault). Address the brain. A good lecture on why certain actions aren't acceptable and revoking of privileges be a sufficient punishment, until they can be earned back through good behavior. Mind you this actually takes effort of the parent to be a parent.

I just sent my oldest to his room today because he said to his brother "you keep doing that in gonna slap you" and then he did it. Now it was really more a tap than anything. My other son even said he didn't think anything of it cause he didn't hit him, only touched him. But i have made it clear as day to both of them I don't abide that. You play soccer or football or any other sport where contact is acceptable that's one thing. And when gaming or playing sports you can s**t talk all you want, but you never lay your hands on someone without their consent

I wont get into my childhood, but hitting never worked for me..I did what I wanted to do no matter the cost. When I had my son, I thought nope..we arent going down that road,, it didnt work for me...not that I would have hit him otherwise. Raising my voice was all it took for my son.

Lol. Raise your hand if you remember the food pyramid that promoted grains above all else, or that eggs were terrible for you, or red meat would kill you, then raise your hand when simple carbohydrates were the cause of obesity, and eggs were a super food, then raise your hand when salads and veggies were recalled for salmonella..... Look...everything in moderation

Does that mean breakfast, lunch, dinner? Do people do that? Not being facetious - I genuinely had no idea that people meat for all three meals. I'll maybe have ham or chicken in a lunch sandwich or if I've gone with leftovers, but we have only ever really eaten meat once a day, and mostly chicken or fish, very very rarely eat red meat or ham. I know that mostly eating white meat is unusual, having done that since the 80s we always stuck out, but wasn't aware only eating it once a day was uncommon. Yesterday for example I had meat at lunch, and then had veggie for dinner. Recently I am trying to do veggie three times a week minimum to try and keep costs down, especially as I'm trying to only eat 'happy' meat which is way more expensive,, but I do genuinely feel better when I have a bit of animal protein, so I can't foresee me going full-time vegetarian unless I had to. But honestly I'm not judging anyone in these times, you have to eat what you can afford, and healthy food is exorbitant.

I don’t understand why people like my parents think that meat eaters are equivalent to serial killers. I just had an argument with my mom where she said I’m “cold blooded and have no consideration for the animals”. Humans are made to eat meat and plants. It’s either up to you or your body to decide if you want to be a vegetarian, vegan or non-vegetarian

It was always perplexing to me how Westerners (if you don't mind me calling y'all that) have this whole Vegetarian vs. Non-vegetarian cultural war going on. In India, half the people you meet are vegetarian and it's just a normal thing. My family loves chicken while my mom, my aunt, and I don't so we just get different food. Meanwhile, I've heard horror stories of being accused of murder from non-vegetarians and having people constantly sneak meat into your dish for 'Gotcha!' moments from vegetarians. It all seems so exhausting for something so meaningless.

The way we look at having kids. You have a dogs**t job, your spouse works as well so nobody will ever be home, when you are home you'll both be tired and miserable from work, you and/or your spouse *clearly* have childhood issues to work out in therapy, you/your spouse or *both* have a genetic condition of some kind be it mental or physical, the food in the house is all pre-made/freeze-dried/frozen/junk, you live in an apartment/too small of a house, you're a slave to massive debt for a useless degree/a car/etc, etc, etc... Go ahead and have kids, it'll be great and thier lives will be absolutely fine!

It seems you either went through a difficult childhood or are struggling as a parent (or both), so I'm sorry you had to go through that. However, it's not the same case for everyone. I have two kids, and although they tire me out and cost a fortune, they bring me unbridled joy. I love them more than I thought possible. So, for me, it's absolutely worth it.

I think you're missing the point they're making here. The societal expectation to "be fruitful and multiply" needs to be put under review. It's great that it's worked out for you but for some it's a bad idea when you do not have the financial means or general heath and well being to be parenting. It shouldn't be an expectation, it should be a planned choice. Edit: Educator, here.

You should only have kids if you really want them. I have one kid and I adore her. I would be lost without her, and she knows it. I didn't have more because I knew myself well enough to know I couldn't handle it. And now she is 16 and really well adjusted. I feel like I made the right decision. Even through a divorce she has always known she is wanted and loved and valued. It's rough... so only have kids if you really want them. Screw what society thinks you should do!!!! I don’t go for juice cleanses but I do own a juicer. I hate wasting food. If I have fruit that’s getting overripe, limited room in the freezer, and limited time to do canning, I juice it. I can make fruit leather or muffins with the pulp.

I know a guy who does a cleanse for 1 month every year. He will not eat at all the entire month. Just drink a mix of lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and honey in water and that's it for a month. He said the second week is the hardest and he will black out sometimes but by day 30 he feels euphoric or he's starving to death and hallucinating which he does admit hallucinating during all of it. Any weight he lost would come back quick when he'd start eating again like a normal human. It's crazy. We try to get him to stop but nope..

Turn off the notifications. Every single electric device I own has ways to turn off notifications. It takes about ten seconds to do. You can also turn the light/sound off, or turn the device off altogether.

We already know they're unhealthy when people affected by it becomes gambling addicts, but people still think gambling addicts is not a big enough problem and that the current level is just a healthy amount of entertainment. Researchers are finding a strong correlation between people who use microtransactions (like loot chests) in video games at a young age and people who develop gambling addictions. They're still not sure if early exposure to microtransactions leads to gambling addiction or if there is an underlying predisposition to buying loot chests that will also lead to gambling addictions.

I’d think the question would become whether research has shown a steep increase in gambling addiction with micro transactions being more of a thing. That would necessitate doing deeper research in to older gambling addicts that didn’t have those kinds of things growing up, to see if there was some thing equivalent in their upbringing. It’s not like gambling addiction is a new thing.

I disagree with this one. The vast majority of people who gamble are not addicts. Limiting advertising for something just because some people have an addiction problem makes no sense. An equivalent example would be limiting shopping because there are shopoholics or beer commercials because of alcoholics. Now I do support less overall advertising.

supplements help if your diet isnt that high in minerals and vitamins due to the locale you live in. Some soils have lost their nutrients due to overfarming so, supplements along with your diet often correct the balance.

It's the human condition to want to be sedentary and to overeat. People will always want a shortcut to being a healthy weight..

    #41

Meat in general, but particularly processed, smoked and grilled meats. I think in 10-20 years most people in the US will be cutting meat consumption by double-digit percentages due to cost. Health studies show our need for protein is much better fulfilled with a combination of (1) smaller servings of meat than is now common and (2) non-meat protein sources. Meat will still be part of our diet, it's the preparation and quantity that people in the future will find incredible. Processed meats, smoked meats, and grilled meats have compounds on the surface shown to cause cancer. Mind you, I find this depressing because I eat all these things. Too late for me though, you all save yourselves and I'll take the hit along with your bacon.

I'm a vegetarian who supports healthy, sustainable, fulfilling meat choices for the rest of the country. Eat meat one - three times a week, at most once a day, from locally sources free-range grass-fed animals. By choice cuts and cook them yourself a couple of times a week. Avoid fast-food meat products at all cost for yourself and for the planet.

We're in serious trouble about that. If it were up to me, I'd limit the number of plastic species allowed in food packaging, apply a mandatory colour code to it to make recycling actually possible, and demand an explanation why anything else is used, if some company actually wants to. Then, we hit the sheer minimum required to do this in any useful way, and not just pretend and execute pointless sorting habits as if we were addicted, knowing it won't make much of a difference, if any at all.

Aluminum foil, all kinds of plastics, all kinds of preservatives in food, but also all the toxic products we use to "protect" our crops, livestock, ...or your terrace and garden from weeds, or your homes from insects, or just to perfume your home... I'd agree that taking a 'billion different vitamins is a bit much. Most don't need any. The NHS advises everyone in the UK to take vit D daily (10mcg) in the winter, as we just don't get enough sun (or may well be working whilst it's light) Pregnancy is also an exception - taking specific vitamins PRIOR to pregnancy (folic acid in particular) will prevent neural tube deficiencies aka spina bifida. Some people need multivitamins and iron supplements through no fault of their own, but generally, no, most people should neither need them nor take them. There are not inconsequential cases annually in the western world of vitamin overdoses - can cause seizures, mood change, headaches etc.

Nowadays they don't, so it's up to us, each individual, to do their own research as to what we are comfortable with.

Instead of spraying Raid I sprinkled Borax around all the baseboards. It's helped a lot. I know Borax is still toxic but at least it's not in an aerosol being sprayed in the air.

I'm ok with flag football. Contact in the way you see in professional version is prohibited. For those unfamiliar you have aflag or streamer attached to the waist. Instead of tackling the goal is to remove the flag. This counts as a tackle. Contract in the way you see in professional american football is prohibited

This would be sad. A tan seems somewhat desirable to most, especially for covering scars and imperfections. Having it sprayed on in comparison to baking in the sun is a breakthrough. I hope it continues to evolve so younger generations can have the option to care for their skin.

I know the keyword is most, but I couldn’t let an opportunity like this pass, & there might be a lot of people who think this is safe. TLDR: Round-Up Weed Killer I recently had a talk with a company rep from a local insect control company, who swore that Round-Up Weed Killer was safe. He told me it was safe around kids, said he would be okay ingesting it, and that he had “spoken to the scientists” who made Round-Up, and it was hands down the safest product on the market for weed killers. I guess I should’ve said, “What about over one hundred thousand people who are pretty sure it gave them cancer?” I went, “didn’t the people who own Round-Up agree to billions of dollars in settlement payouts?” He said, oh, that’s just people trying to get money from them. I wouldn’t recommend a product that’s unsafe.

still better than copper oxide or spirulina extract whose are considered suitable for organic farming. Also since weed killer round-ups are used worldwide, the high cancer rates should have been a worldwide pandemic. But they were mostly registered on specific plantations especially in middle and south america that used a lot of other very high potent pestizides, herbizides and fertilizers in combination.

Carbs convert to sugar, so low carbs are needed with pre diabetes and diabetes. Those who are 'overweight' are very likely at some point to develop diabetes, so start early and limit the carbs. It's not just the processed foods, it's that carbs (potatoes/rice/pasta) are relatively cheap, so the poorer you are, the more carbs/fillers you eat.

I always thought the 3-2-1 diet was the most comprehensive diet that fit what most dr and nutritionists recommended(from what I've read, not an expert take me with a grain of salt) for the average person. Basically look at the total calories in a meal. 3 parts calories from carbs, 2 parts calories from protein, 1 part from fat. It's a little light on the general recommendation for carbs and a little heavy on protein but makes for a good rule of thumb

Alcohol goes back and forth a lot. As best I understand it from all the studies it helps with some things and hinders others. A recent study I heard on the radio is suggesting occasional use can help with dementia while to much can increase odds. I'm sure similar is true with caffeine. I guess just don't drink more than a serving or two of either per day and you should be good?

It's actually being written into building codes; any new construction *has* to be made super tight, and then mechanical ventilation added. It does provide more control over interior conditions (temperature and humidity), but it also requires expensive equipment and continued use of power to operate.

But your double glazed windows will often have a small latch at the top which will open it microscopically to allow airflow. If not, the window can be put open a few millimetres (1/4 inch maybe) for the same. I'm VERY pro insulation, and also pro fresh air, so if it's done properly there is no issue. Just ask our Nordic friends.

Ceral for breakfast has been a 'thing' since Roman times. Just not the K***gs brand. Make porridge from a bag of rolled oats, then add whatever sugar YOU decide. (or salt, as do the Scots) UK always has unsweetened versions of breakfast cerals - cornflakes with no sugar, puffed rice etc.

I can't eat it at all. Makes me deathly sick with stomach & intestinal issues. My body can't digest it. I would be immensely happy if they stop using it in every food item, Seriously makes my eating choices low

Let's see - firstly, they're a huge waste of plastic. Secondly, they are one of the most discarded food items, withat least half of them going straight from store to trash without ever being opened. Thirdly, they are a common source of food poisoning.

Orange juice- the amount of sugar they put in smoothies and orange juice is insane. It's almost the same amount as a can of coke.

Most times, fruit juice - of whatever kind and make - has MORE sugar than Cola. I have a bottle of afri Cola standing beside me. In the EU, it is mandatory to have a chart of some nutritiously relevant substances' amount, which in this case states 100 ml Cola contain 11 g sugar ... while apple juice I have on the balcony has 13.8 g. This is pretty normal, it usually is somewhere in the 10...15 g/100ml range, and thereby exceeds your usual Cola, spanning between 8 and 12'ish.

Have a look a scientific research, it is one of societies biggest cons that we need milk, believed to be so heavily pushed by governments to keep farmers in business. Also - if you can, look at the intensive methods used to produce milk, very few live a happy life on a farm.

But drinking oat/almond or rhubarb milk is completely weird. Soy milk for lactose issues is fine, buit the rest are just an expensive food fad. Plant-based milk is more expensive because of processes, packaging etc. Nor is it particularly 'green' due to the industrial processes needed. If we didn't drink milk, we would have very few cows. Lots of 'farmland' isn't suitable for crops so currently the cows and sheep are the 'crop'. They are not suddenly going to grow almond trees on that land. Someone has commented that we are the only animals to continue to drink milk after weaning - but hey, that and cooked meat is what gave us the brain to develop into homo sapiens. I don't want to argue how sapient we are, or what we awful things we have done with our sapience, but cow's milk is of benefit to the poorest who cant bloomin afford the trendy eye of newt milk or whatever today's flavour is.

The argument about meat eating being so important for our evolution is standing on very shaky ground these days. It appears that seeds, nuts and other foraged ingredients were much more important than meat in the evolution of humanity than previously thought, with meat being a pleasant "bonus".

Well, consider that humans are the only species on the planet who not only drink milk beyond infancy, but also drink milk of other species. The dairy industry pushed a false narrative that we need milk for good health, and it was incredibly successful.

Yes, to calves. And maybe for children. But all you're getting from it after that stage is fat. Even if you consider lowfat milk. As a source of calcium (which is mostly why milk is considered important) there is loads of other, healthier, stuff around. Furthermore, cowmilk is for cowbabies. Actually 'lactose intolerant' sounds like you're abnormal when in fact thàt should be the norm. You need extra bacteria to be able to digest it - which is why you should never give a child normal cowsmilk before the age of about 1.

I have never drank milk. I very rarely have chocolate milk and occasionally I have hot chocolate in the winter with milk. I use it only on cereal when I buy cereal, not often, and to cook with. And I have no working stove or oven so I never bake cakes or anything.

I could see myself doing this if I lived alone. I love cooking, for others...not for myself. If I'm home by myself for awhile, I cook up whatever in one fell swoop and that will get me through until I have someone to cook for.

Correct. I was successfully treated for ovarian cancer with chemo. Basically, it's controlled poison with the goal that it attacks weaker cancer cells and your other cells are strong enough to recover. In my case, I was blessed and it worked. There are so many different types of chemo, targeted specifically for the type of cancer. We've got a long road ahead but they are making strides every day.

I think the idea there is that as medical science moves forward, we'll eventually have better treatments than drugs that are slightly more toxic to cancer cells than the rest of you.

There are researchers trying to develop chemo that will only affect the cancerous cells and not healthy cells. Whether that will ever be successful remains to be seen.

Chemo has changed a lot over the years. It's gotten more targeted for different cancers. While it sucked to go through, 6 years later I'm still here with no sign of a cancer reoccurrence. I do hope they continue to develop better treatments, but glad it was available. Editing to add that no one thinks Chemo is "healthy".

Ok we may look at this different in the future, but I think we'll look at it more like chewing willow bark for a headache than we will blood letting. Like it's something that actually worked but not as effective as the modern means

Tailored chemo will be the next big thing - analysing your genome, and finding a cocktail of drugs that is exactly suited to you and your tumour. In a few hundred years, you may be able to vape the drugs, but I reckon that many of the wearying side effects will continue. After all, you are trying to kill a bit of yourself.
