What do you think they teach in high school? Academic subjects, of course. Soft skills - definitely. And in high school, people also learn to joke. Yes, to hone a brilliant wit that reaches its peak in college, and in the meantime, school looks like a training ground for witticisms.

In fact, nowhere is the humor as ruthless as it is in high school. Not always impeccably witty, not always graceful and stylish - but teenagers cannot refuse the opportunity to roast each other. And often teachers become the victims of their jokes as well.

Jessica Kirkland, a Virginia teacher, once tweeted about her students' peculiar humor, and went viral with 551.3K likes and over 35.7K retweets. Almost immediately, hundreds of other teachers came to the thread and actively began to talk about how their own students roasted them.

Bored Panda collected for you a selection of the most witty, subtle and simply funny jokes from this thread, which also emphasize that teachers themselves have an excellent sense of irony, so as not to be offended, but to tell others.

This is the first one I actually like. The others are borderline disrespectful.

In fact, humor plays an important role in the learning process, and this is primarily due to the transformation of the role of the teacher. If earlier, a few decades ago, the teacher was the main source of information for students, now they most often become just a moderator of the discussion in the class. Not a superior, but one of the participants in the learning process.

Unless your student is 5, that's just rude. Anyone older than that should know better.

"Excessive joke elements can cause students to lose focus in learning and if jokes are well implemented, it can help in achieving good academic accomplishment and helping students to be highly spirited," Ahmad also notes.

I remember in middle school I would walk to school, and there was always one guy in my neighborhood who would wear shorts and a t shirt everyday, and he would RUN up the hill to our school. Like it was the height of winter, and it snows quite a bit where I live, my friends and I are bundled up and this guy, shorts and a t-shirt like every day, is SPRINTING up the sidewalk.

Why is someone wearing a winter coat when it's that hot outside, or is that °F? I wish people would take their potential audience into account and be clear

Right! I was wondering why the kid would call it “so 2015” instead of “a really weird thing to do because it’s actually 30 degrees” until I realized it must be an American post 😅

When I was in elementary through high school, wearing hats, scarves, gloves was not considered cool in my town. It wasn't until I was in my mid-20s that I realized how nice it was to wear them when it's cold outside.

Around here, 30 degrees is sweltering hot, so I am assuming you are talking Fahrenheit not Celsius

Apparently, coolness varies with the country. I live in northern Italy, and I often found myself wondering how can healthy and strong HS kids wear hoodie, coat, scarf, heavy boots when it's 15°C outside and I am going to my office in a light cotton suit over a light shirt wore on bare skin and loafers.

not to be rude, but why write in that font for every single comment? it messes with screen readers for visually impaired people, can be impossible to decipher for dyslexic & neurodivergent people, & sometimes just appears as blank rectangles or question marks for people on certain devices. why not just use regular text?

No less important is the presence of a sense of irony for the teacher. Indeed, firstly, a person must remember that they themselves were about the same as a teenager, and secondly, they must not be offended by not always successful and sometimes even offensive jokes, but simply laugh with the students.

By the way, it is worth remembering the jokes from our selection - perhaps one of these students will grow up and become famous, and then this humor will go down in history, like this post of ours with brilliant and witty celebrity quotes. In the meantime, just feel free to scroll to the very end and maybe write your own high school jokes in the comments!
