The library. Free. So much joy and entertainment and learning right there.
Love the library! The Libby app is awesome, and I even get free movies from Kanopy.
I love Libby! My state has a digital library system, so I can access stuff from there on it
Load More Replies...And under attack by Republicans here in the US. Defend your local libraries!
I will say I've seen both sides be pretty unreasonable about the literature we offer at our libraries. A Liberal woman kindly informed me I should remove a certain book from our Young Adult collection because it talked about rape. I smiled and told her young people, especially teenage girls, should be aware of rape and not have it withdrawn because it's a difficult topic. I was told by one of my white coworkers(I'm a black woman) another white woman, possibly Conservative, cried to the Director because we had a book titled White Fragility on our New Books display. Kind of proved the book's point, but I digress. Both sides have some great views and some insane views. Both sides have amazing, caring people and awful, evil people. I share values with both sides, but my goodness, y'all are toxic as hell!
Load More Replies...Yes. Be there, stay there, read there, learn there and take books home with you, too. In some libraries, borrowing books is free.
my local library also has a community fridge and it allows CDs and DVDs to loan :)
Long walks as often as you can. Preferably in nature.
Even better: walks with a friend. Healthy exercise, sun or at least fresh air and good conversations.
Yes, I’m glad I live in the peaceful country now (originally from a big city and did miss it at first), with my house backing onto a forest and can’t see my neighbour’s for the trees. I try to take my dog on a long walk down our quiet dirt road most days, weather permitting.
Ok, just my personal experience & nothing scientific, but here goes. Some time ago I took up walks, on average 8,000 steps a day 5x per week. I'm a fat guy and while I didn't become slim, I lost some weight and my endurance greatly improved. It's also a nice mood booster, especially with music.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately living in the UK the weather isn't all that good for walking 6 months of the year, the other 6 months and the rain is warmer.
For me, it's a good, long back-rub by my wife when my lower back is hurting.
I received a microwave splatter cover as a Christmas present. I heard it was bought at a dollar store. It's my most valued, most often used gift of the past many years.
Do they now yell at you for uncovering reheated food?
Load More Replies...The best thing is, that you can use it as a shield for hot bowls and plates when eating on the sofa.
Thanks for that idea! You have just justified all the time I've spent on the internet today. (And thanks for doing that, too.)
Load More Replies...Had one for years until dad somehow melted it. Don't ask, I have no idea how he did that. Went a couple weeks without before I caved and bought a new one.
I once accidentally put one in the (conventional) oven. At least they aren't expensive to replace
Load More Replies...My mom bought me a pink one with a little piggy as the handle on top. It's adorable. And I hate cleaning my microwave, so it's awesome.
Quick hack of you must clean it. Place a mug of water in it and heat 1-2 minutes. Wait a while then simply wipe it out as the steam cleans it. I use a wet cloth with fresh lemon juice and water.

Blackout curtains for your bedroom window
God yes, especially during the summer when the sun in still blazing at 9pm and you’re trying to get to sleep.
Or when I have a migraine and I need my room to be pitch black.
Load More Replies...Wouldn't call that super cheap tho, good curtains can be pretty expensive. Still worth it, but not cheap
They're 15-20€ here, so less than 40€ per window. Not exactly cheap, indeed, but rather affordable.
Load More Replies...What am I missing? What do light-dampening curtains have to do with the noise from a siren?
Load More Replies...Cheap solituon--glue stick and aluminum foil. Scribble on the glass with the glue stick, and put the foil (cut to fit) on it. When you need to remove it, pull up the foil, and wash the glue off with soap and water. It's very 80s crackhouse, but it worked when I was on midnight shift!
I absolutely cannot sleep if light gets in. The trick to getting black out curtains to do a great job…don’t hang them from curtain rod cause light comes around the curtain or from the top. Attach them to the wall with thumbtacks and they block everything. Can’t tell whether it’s day or night in my bedroom now
So true. I love my blackout curtains. They also help keep my room cooler in the summer since I have a big patio door going out onto my deck, and I don’t have air conditioning
As a migraine sufferer, I can't even begin to express how important blackout curtains are for my well-being!
Sobriety
Should it be more high, though? I mean, being high doesn't mesh well with sobriety.

Oooh la la look at all the people that are happy they were born and enjoy the way their brain works. Not for me, thanks
YES! It's not just cheap, it SAVES you money both in not buying alcohol and/or drugs and in quality of life
If this is on the list for some reason it should be much higher, this is literally a struggle to live not an improvement.
Getting a good, long sleep.
Are we really doing this? This is just gonna be free stuff that’s mildly challenging to do?
Mildly challenging for you, maybe. I'd LOVE to be able to get a good night's sleep again.
Load More Replies...What's that like? I've had issues with insomnia since I was 9yo. Rare if I sleep more than three hours at a time.
A nice long sleep. A good one. What's that like? I have a good, long sleep and still wake up tired. Every time. Good on you if you have a good sleep and awake refreshed.
We never had fresh flowers in the house growing up, but now that I’m almost 30 and married, I love getting the little $5 flower bunches at Kroger every week! I know $5 adds up over the year, but it makes me so happy seeing pretty little blooms on our dining room table. Sometimes little joys are worth the expense :)
There are growing small purple flowers near our trashbins. I like to snap a few of them and put them in a tiny earthy vase. It is a colourful dot on our table and for free
I thought I had a nice purple flowering vine springing up in my backyard, which I had seen along other people's fences in the neighborhood. Looked it up to find that it was a poisonous nightshade 🤦♀️ had to pull it so the dogs didn't end up trying to eat the berries that started growing.
Load More Replies...I wish I could have flowers at home, but one of my cats like to chew on them.
Me too. And one will knock them over so she can play in the water that spills out. I swear she is part racoon.
Load More Replies...“If thou of fortune be bereft, and in thy store there be but left, two loaves, sell one, and with the dole, buy hyacinths to feed thy soul.” ― John Greenleaf Whittier
OP, you do not need to justify your $5/week expense for flowers to anyone whose name is not on your checking account. Follow your happiness :)
I love flowers! There are plants that flower all year (or almost all year depending on the plant), and you can grow them in pots. Just bring them indoors and swap them around for variety. That said its nice to get fresh flowers too, especially as a treat.
Yep. There are lots of plants that do great indoors, with partial or filtered light. For anyone who has a history of killing houseplants, two things to keep in mind: don't overwater -- let the soil get dryish in between waterings (pick up the pot; if it's surprisingly heavy, the soil still has water in there) -- and be aware of air flow. If the heater blows right at the plant, you're basically baking it and you need to either move the plant or re-direct the vent. And same goes for windowsills, if the sun is beating right through the window, it can get HOT. Like, locked in a car in the summer hot.
Load More Replies...I understand the sentiment, flowers are a bright spot in a home. If you're concerned on the expense adding up over the year, perhaps purchase a couple potted flowers that will last for many months.
No importance. Just a big supermarket chain. So as part of her shopping for groceries she buys some flowers that make her happy :)
Load More Replies...Alstrameria last weeks !!! I get them from the Grocery store nearby for $7 a bunch!
We didn't have fresh flowers either but I do buy them for myself often. They're just a little splash of beauty when I walk in the house.
$1 bamboo back scratcher (is this an age thing, I never needed one when I was young?)
I bought cheap $1 metal back scratchers that telescope. I bought a 5 pack of them and keep one in my nightstand, my car and at work. The car is the best one because there is nothing worse than getting an itch when you're driving and you can't reach it!
Same ! And a telescoping massager as well. Both go every where with me.
Load More Replies...Yep, it's an age thing; bought my first one this year - somehow my arms no longer reach to the middle of my back.
I have three strategically placed around my home. And yeah, it was an age thing for me. I didn't seem to need one until I was in my 50s.
- and the reverse side is good for putting creams or topical pain salves, etc on that 'can't reach' place in the middle.
Drinking water lol no sodas or carbonated beverages. My teeth, gut and overall health are a bit grateful.
I drink water 90% of the time, but sometimes I want some fizz. So I get some plain mineral water and add fruit to it. Strawberries etc are pretty good for flavouring. Sweetens it naturally and you get a serving of fruit too.
Carbonation isn't the problem. It's all the sugar and the acidity of sodas and energy drinks. Coke is the worst. I love drinking San pellegrino because it's carbonated and has no sugar
Tea is great. I do drink more herbal tea than legit tea, but I like both. And I drink about the same amount, 6-9 cups/day.

A hot shower.
And the little metal hair catcher I put in the drain so it doesn’t clog.
A hot shower is such a huge luxury that many people in the world do not have. Yet those of us who do, take it for granted.
I assure you, I do not take a hot shower for granted. Ever. It is a luxury that I am always grateful for.
Load More Replies...If you have a walk-in shower, you need a catcher that fits over the drain. Here's an example. OXO Good Grips Silicone Shower & Tub Drain Protector, Gray https://a.co/d/ikKCyiG. My daughter and I have thick hair, and this is an item that is very important to me!

Condoms
Why? I know why you say it, but why would you say it to his dad?
Load More Replies...Yep! Had a boyfriend ask if he could skip this one time since he's capable of pulling out. I told him he could either wear the condom or we'd not be doing anything for a while until he not only understood how serious it was, but realize how awful he sounded asking me like it's no big deal. Men can be so selfish and ridiculous when it comes to wearing a condom. Allergic? Condoms have different materials, so pick on you like. Insecure about your size? Suck it up, you can't change it. Otherwise, yay, glad you want to be a dad! Oh, you don't? Wear a condom or no sex!
Walking my daughter to school.
We literally live across the street and I would drive her. The amount of time it would take for us to get from our apartment to the van, get buckled, and down to the exit of the parking garage, around the block and wait at the light, I could already be across the street.
Now we walk to and from, round trip is 20 mins, twice per day, so roughly 40 mins of low-impact cardio per day five days per week.
We have more energy and diminished pain (she has scoliosis and some fused vertebrae and I have fibromyalgia). Bonus: my pants are now too big.
I wonder how they got to the idea of driving when it's so close but I am glad and happy for them they finally figured, this is an easy walk (and maybe wonderful bonding time)
I think the medical conditions listed in the last paragraph explain it.
Load More Replies...Aside from mobility issues, who wouldn't undertake a 10 minute walk? Using a car for that is both lazy and wasteful, and teaches the child bad habits.
See the above comments: there are actually schools that ban kids walking to them, infrastructure is built for cars and is dangerous for pedestrians.
Load More Replies...Where I live there are actually schools who ban parents from walking their kids so they HAVE to drive to drop off/pick up. They claim it's for safety's sake. I get it but I live in a rural area, not NYC and the kid is not walking alone. Ridiculous.
This is mind boggling to me! But then again, I live in an urban area where parents have to cycle/walk their kids to school, as cars are banned in the surrounding streets and there is no drop off point to avoid traffic jams hindering locals.
Load More Replies...I loved walking my kids to school. We lived about 2 blocks from the elementary school. We walked across the local playground to get there. It was fun for me and I hope the kids liked it too.I was lucky that I got to spend their formative years with them.
I always walk my kids to school, always have - helps I've never bothered to get my drivers license but I genuinely don't feel the need to drive. Sure it'd be nice in rainy days to just jump in the car but given I'd probably find any excuse to drive instead of walk if I could so for my own well being it's better I leave the driving to everyone else
I never got my licence either. I walk or ride my bike everywhere. I actually hate being in cars coz I get motion sick in them
Load More Replies...Why would you ever even think of driving such a short distance!
I am sure if I drove your daughter to school I am not gonna relax.for long...
Might be worth clarifying what you mean to avoid downvotes, as that sounded a little "child predator" to me.
Load More Replies...They literally live across the street and need 20min to get there? Just how wide that street is? :-D And sure, good for them to get that bit of exercise, just like across the street and 20 min walk just don't add up for me. But I definitely do encourage everyone to walk those short trips instead of spending time in car. When I was in subsidiary school 1st to 4th grade that also was like good 15-20 min away, I also would walk, at first with mother, but latter alone. It however was quite a lot further than across the street. Plus in the middle I also met with friend who was in same class. Latter 5th grade and up, I had to to main school building that was good 45-50min away, so I would only for trip Fridays when going home. For rat, I went with bus.
A 20 minutes round trip is 10 minutes each way. So if you're spending 20 min in the morning and 20 min in the afternoon, then that's a 40 min round trip.
Growing my own vegetables. Getting out in fresh air and working in it. Frees my mind and helps me relax. Plus is fresh vegetables.
Home grown vegetables taste infinitely better than the junk you buy at the store.
Sometimes. Other times you get corn that has half as many kernels and they're not as sweet. Weird shaped tomatoes that suck for sandwiches. Grapes that are bitter and no good for anything... So yeah, if you don't have a green thumb, store bought is way better.
Load More Replies...My kid refused to eat them, because bugs had walked on them. The ones from the store did not have this problem.
Actually your kids might be on to something, whatever you say about store veggies, chances are they are grown cleaner than anything you can grow yourself.
Load More Replies...I live in an apartment. so I have to the container thing. Not brave enough to try veggies yet....but herbs, that I do. Plus a few other plants. Get the same outdoor fix, and herbs to cook with. Nothing like it.
I love puttering in my garden and sometimes I go out super early in my bathrobe and sandals to check out what changed overnight. I like planting potatoes that have sprouted in the kitchen all over my garden spaces - I call them random potatoes. I find out where they do the best. And they make pretty and lush plants with nice flowers.
Relaxing? How can you relax when you make enemies out of half the bug world?!?!?! On the up side grasshopper stomping is good cardio, even if the neighbors think I'm crazy.
Not always cheap (vary in price) but houseplants.
I amassed 78 houseplants like this. I only had 2 types that were doubles. Also, my garden was all from friends & the side of the road.
Load More Replies...I just felt the need to count my houseplants - I have 42 indoor plant companions. Happy sigh.
yes, sharing plants with others is one of the biggest joys of gardening
When i wad in my early 20s I took a bunch of split perrenials from my parents gardens and planted them at a rental I lived in. 20+ years later I drove by and they're still flourishing in front of that house .
I love plants in my home. Unfortunately I have a black hole thumb, so I can't keep anything alive. Doesn't matter that I follow all the instructions and get the best soil, food, etc. they all just die, so I've given up
However, I wish I could stop them from dying on me. My theory is the calcarous water in my area. (Filtering it doesn't help.)
Depends on the plants, but most common houseplants actually need some minerals. However, there might be other stuff in your tap water (like lead, for example). Might not hurt to get it tested, or just buy a gallon of spring water at the grocery store for them. Otherwise, one, make sure you're not over watering, and two, pay attention to each plant's particular light needs. Some plants need lots of bright light, while others need indirect or filtered light. Most houseplants prefer indirect light, so if you've been putting them right by a window where the sun shines right in, that might be the problem. Try a snake plant, they don't need a lot of water, are pretty flexible in terms of light needs, and are pretty tough -- they're great beginner plants!

Homemade bread!
This is what I had to learn during the lockdown, but now I'm so happy I did. There's nothing better than a hot baked bread with a crunchy crust and all kinds of seed mix. 20200517_2...b51db7.jpg
Use stale bread for panzanella (bread salad, see Ina Garten's recipe), croutons, bread pudding, French toast, bread crumbs, stuffing, etc.
I make wonderful crusty no-knead loaves now. So simple and delicious!
If you ever had real homemade bread, you would not say this.

Binder clips. Handy for closing chip bags. Handy for anchoring picnic tablecloths to the table. Handy for posting things prominently so you remember to do them.
I keep some in multiple rooms of my house and in my vehicles.
I use clothespins. I can get a 100 pack from the dollar store and they last forever.
I use both. Binder clips can be a bit sturdier, but I usually use my clothes pins.
Load More Replies...Document clips. They help when doing DIYs like holding together glued things, hold together other stuff, they are sold in different sizes. I love them.
Forgive me, but what’s the difference between binder clips and document clips? I tried to Google it 🙃
Load More Replies...The small ones are great to keep a shirt or dress that shows too much cleavage closed up a little. They're easier for me to use than safety pins.
I'm currently using claw clips for hair. I bought the medium size thinking they would work but, my hair is just a little to thick for them.
Really handy for usb cables if you keep one in your bag for charging your phone
I must say I have an over-any of them, saved when I get them from who knows where, but hardly ever use them…
I use these for EVERYTHING!!! When I had bunnies, instead of getting an expensive animal carrier, I'd put them in my laundry basket & use binder clips to clip a large towel over it. Because they were so used to seeing the basket around the place, they never hid from it when it was time to go to the vet, & I didn't need to store an extra contraption in my small apartment. Why pay extra for plastic chip clips that break when you drop them when you can use these?? They come in various sizes & are indestructible!!!
I use one to secure the bottom of the kitchen towel I hang from my oven door handle.
I'm going to go with... Buying duplicates to cut down on the barrier to chores.
For example, cleaning the toilet. I could buy just one bottle of toilet bowl cleaner and carry it to each bathroom when I'm cleaning. But instead, I buy one for each bathroom and leave one by each toilet. This doesn't cost more than buying just one in the long run, since the cleaner is consumed at about through the same rate (although it's a little faster because I'm actually using it), but it means that it's that much easier to clean a toilet when I need to do it. And because it's easier to clean the toilet, they stay cleaner, which means it takes barely a few minutes to clean a toilet and I don't have to deal with the extra nasty level of grime that's hard to clean.
Another example would be having broom for each floor of the house. I'm more likely to sweep if I don't have to bring a broom from upstairs or something. Or buying extra rolls of trash bags and leaving the rolls near each trash can.
My mind boggles at the idea of being able to afford to live in a place that has more than one floor and more than one toilet/bathroom.
I don't want to sound harsh but why would it boggle your mind? I didn't have a 2nd bathroom until I was over 40 but I knew they existed from friends and movies. It wasn't an odd thing. I never even thought of someone having a 2nd bath as a "rich" person, anymore than someone having a car 10 years newer than mine. Just the way people live, that's all.
Load More Replies...I do this too. Its a lot easier to clean when the things you need are -right there- within reach, when you think "I need to clean this". Especially for people who have depression or other mental health issues.
This is me - my MH means I put things off if I can't do it easily.
Load More Replies...I'm going to get a little more specific. And from US. But 2 toilets is where it's at. Only need one shower. But 2 toilets. You ever had 2 people exploding from both ends and needing to share 1 toilet? Not living that again if I can help it. When we were house hunting our list of "must haves" was pretty short. 2 toilets was at the top.
a lovely luxury if one can afford it for sure! Many years ago I had 4 people in that condition in a 2 bed one bath apartment. at one point I'm pretty sure each of us was hoping that the bug we had would just kill us and get it over with.
Load More Replies...Actually, in the long run it is always less expensive to buy multiples because you are saving money on gas.
YES, THANK YOU! I have depression and ADHD, having duplicates of things ensures the job they're for get done at all (and/or that I don't lose the thing).
When we lived in a two story house, we had an upstairs vacuum and a downstairs vacuum cause if I had to lug that heavy machine upstairs I’d used up my energy
I do this! We live in a Town House (3 floors) with 1 bathroom & a downstairs loo. (My parents house that was bought in the 1980's) and we have 2 vacuums & 3 brooms, and cleaners in each bathroom, and dusters & polish on each floor, because my brain just refuses to deal with carrying things up & down stairs all the time. Having the things on each floor means things get cleaned as needed, not when I can remember to take things to each floor.
I always do that. Not just cleaning supplies but also other life necessity items. So,I saw this when I was younger and it became a habit. The cleaning supplies depending on my living arrangements and situation. The others I believe that Sometimes, you might have a difficult time financially. Could happen to anyone at anytime unexpectedly. Now,when that happens, I don't have to go without things that I need or make those hard choices that come up during the bad months. To all the people who called me crazy for doing this or said that I was foolish. I am not worried about going without things like they are.
Yoga With Adriene on YouTube. I love her relaxed vibe and variety of offerings. So much better than having to go somewhere and pay for a class, and I always feel so good afterwards.
She absolutely is great. It turns out I don't care for the style of yoga she teaches but I kept with her videos because of her. And! I found my preferred style of yoga from someone in the comments section of one of her videos.
She is amazing and has a very chill vibe when leading her video tutorials. I always offer it to friends who have mobility issues but want to try something to feel healthier or more active!
I love Aprille from The Yoga Ranger. Yin yoga has lowered my blood pressure, which was so high I was having dizzy spells, helped me sleep, greatly improved my flexibility and helped prevent debilitating headaches. She also has a cat named Lucy, like I do, who joins her during her routines, like my kitty sometimes does, and you can hear her purrs through the microphone. Adds to the relaxation for me, being a fellow cat lover. I went from thinking I couldn’t sit still doing a 10 minute routine to occasionally doing a 75 minute video. Which reminds me to fit one in tomorrow…

Exercise in general - no expensive gym needed. Work out at home or outside.
An afternoon on the sofa with a good book and a blanket.
Walks outside are easy, but I've tried multiple times in the past to be an "exercise at home" kind of person, and I just don't have the discipline to keep with it if I don't have a group workout to go to. But a lot of towns do have groups that meet in the park in summer time and stuff.
A oft-said comment, "The best exercise is the exercise you do.£ If you don't love exercising at home, find another type of exercise, one that suits you, your time constraints, etc. If group workouts are your thing, then that's the one to do.

In the name of all that is holy please don't workout at home if you don't live on the ground level. Your downstairs neighbors don't wanna hear your jumping jacks or whatever you're doing. If you don't live on the ground level, either go outside or at the gym. - A Pissed-off Neighbor
Buying treats for my pet, and showing him love through them. Quite rewarding
This is good for pet and owner. It gives trust to pet and owner, plus it is very helpful in training dogs.
Yes - and training cats! :) I think the comments below are making an assumption that OP is 100% only showing love through treats and no other way. Guys, pets love getting treats from their owners. It’s just a comment on a post about inexpensive rewarding things you can do (and I love buying my kitters a little treat once in a while too)….don’t be so judgmental of 2 little sentences, there’s not enough info here to condemn anyone :p

My dogs are too fat for that, so we go for walks so my vet doesn't yell at me. Lol
A second vote for some dollar store bins.
Having ADHD causes me to forget to do morning routine things constantly. So I finally put everything in a basket - hair brush, hair ties, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, tongue scraper, ear cleaner. Basket comes out and everything is right there.
Also a pill organizer. I got two huge unopened ones from the thrift store and since I take several daily meds to keep me alive, it's kind of important to remember to take them. So on Sundays I refill and I have two so I only have to do it twice a month. It sits out on my counter as a reminder.
I have had one for four months. My little sister went out of her way to get one for me that has 4 sections per day of the week. And I still haven't gotten around to using it. I'm sure that it will be super helpful once I remember to fill it.
Load More Replies...Pharmacies in Canada organize your daily schedule of pills for you into blister packs when they dispense them to you. All of your morning pills together in one "blister" etc. Comes in a two week sheet folded in half like a book with everything labelled.
THE PILL ORGANIZER!!! Oh my gosh, a literal life saver for me. I always forgot my meds before I started using one (hadn't been diagnosed with ADHD yet LOL) then when I need to take certain ones in the morning and others at night I bought a morning one in another color. So freaking helpful. And when I do forget, cause it still happens sometimes, I can SEE it. Which means I don't double up and also, if I notice a difference in my health, I can track if I missed my meds or not.
I now have two dosette boxes because I have to take my meds as soon as I finish work, as well as ones in the morning. The night one has compartments that come out so I can take my one dose a night with me in my bag.
We need a whole tread of things that make ADHA life easier for sufferers.E.g I can now clean my house, once sometimes twice a week, completely in an hour. It took a lot to get to this point but now ,it is literally show home clean(we are selling and having open houses every weekend).I clean to the same list of songs ,by the same artist.(Thank you Billy Bragg).Cleaning the sinks and benches to "Must I paint you a picture",Stove and fridge to "The Price I Pay" etc etc ...By "Never Cross A Picket Line " and "the Internationale" , the beds are made...It works a treat and is the first time in my life that I can clean successfully ,without verging on panic :)
We have a side by side fridge, love water & ice in the door, HATE the freezer. I bought a plastic bin for each shelf. So much easier.
OCD answer: my bathroom wire bin also fits well into the travel bag- looks like a camera bag.
Dental floss
My dentist recommended those G.U.M. picks instead. They work well, but I do wonder about their disposable nature. I do use each one more than once.
I prefer the picks too (the white ones with little green bits at the tip). I wash them too for using a few times.
Load More Replies...I buy a flosser with a handle that looks like a toothbrush. A small piece of plastic with a string of floss fits into the head. There's very little plastic that goes to waste. Here's an example: Listerine Ultraclean Access Snap-On Flosser & Flosser Refill Head 28 ea, Pack for Proper Oral Care, Mint Flavor 1 ea https://a.co/d/b4YuDbh
I recommend these to patients all the time, they are oriented in a better/more useful way than the plackers
Load More Replies...I keep those little ones all over the house, in my purse & in the car.
You know dental floss can be used to sew something!! Its much stronger than using thread...plus it usually looks invisible and whatever you sewed will not cone out in the wash. It's great to keep in your bag or purse when you go out...to use if you get something stuck in your teeth or if you accidentally rip your pants and just need to sew it up real fast in the bathroom! But pack with it a sewing needle or a small traveling sewing kit...the thréad in those is thin and short...practically worthless anyway...but it's the needle you may need .
Interdental brushes for me. I have a gap between 2 molars that I can only thoroughly clean with one of those.
Taking walks or hiking in the woods. So rejuvenating!
Or simply birdwatching and listening to birds in the backyard.
I love to hear bird's singing, unfortunately because of wind turbines and more predators there slowing becoming extinct
I have ten feeding stations spread around in my front yard in 4 locations with combinations of 5 different feeds. I have had up to 3 or 4 dozen birds all around at once, sometimes more in snowy weather. It's fùcking awwwwwwesummmmmm
Yes, I love when the birds come back to my yard after the winter and start singing. Sometimes I go out early before dawn and listen to the robins’ beautiful song.
A microwavable heat pack. Helps me feel relaxed and ease aches and pains
Oh, I ended buying multiple Bed Buddies because my teen kept stealing them. I'd find her with 3 of them in the winter lol
I heat them to put in my bed year-round! Having warm feet makes it SO much easier to fall asleep!
We used hand towels to make our bags. Never had rice poke through, never had a mold issue, last forever.
Home made ones are super easy to make even with minimal sewing experience. Just be aware of the filling you use. Rice is going to smell like popcorn. I used cherry pits in the last one, wasn't as bad as the rice.
my grandma taught me how to make these! we have like 6. Just a thick canvas-like material, and deer corn, make a small pillow like thing. it’s great!
I make it with wheat from the pet shop. And a little advice- always use a cup of water in the microwave as wheat dries up and can eventually explode
A walk beside the ocean. A cup of tea and a blanket and a book.
That’s true. This also serves as a good note to make the best of what your home area can provide. Even if you only got a lake, be pretty groovy spot for a picnic and a book.
Load More Replies...You can still do the tea, blanket and book. And ideally, walk in the nature :)
Load More Replies...Jesus Christ, obviously this isn't for people who don't live near the sea. Stop making boring, pointless comments 🙄
I don't live near water, but I bought a cheap tabletop fountain and love it. The sound of water is so relaxing.
Color me envious. I understand fully. If not the sea, then a brook or stream. Something about the sound of water.
Sad thing is, I used to live in Florida, 10 min drive to the beach. I went to the beach so infrequently when I was there because, well it's just always there it was no longer special. You had to schedule a time to go to the beach because other things in life just became more important (whereas during vacation you are bound and determined to get in as much beach time as you can!)
But why would you want to juggle a blanket, a book, and a cup of tea while walking by the ocean???
It would cost me so much money to do that lmao Just in gas alone taking the 2 hour trip to the shore, then trying (and failing) to find any parking and ultimately giving up and going to a paid lot. I much prefer my own home anyway
All of these suggestions are so good. Scrolling through I had that "these are my people" feeling. I love this sub
Lemon or cucumber water!
A crystal suncatcher prism in a sunny window (rainbows everywhere!)
A clean, organized home
Exercise in nature (hikes, yoga, wild swimming, etc)
Line dried bedding (the freshness makes me so happy)
Deep breathing
Tea and a book
Fresh flowers (bought or foraged)
Gardening

I love freshly laundered sheets, dried in the sun. Slipping into bed is sheer perfection.
Something about the sun and fresh air vs a dryer really makes a difference, no idea what it is!

I still dry my clothes on a clothes line. My daughters co workers wanted to know what kind of laundry detergent does your mom use your clothes always smell so good The sound of wind chimes. After I put one on my front porch I noticed my neighbors now have them. Our neighborhood is a song of soft breezes or a blustery day
Hmm, I hang dry almost all my laundry. The only ones I don't are towels, sheets, and a few specific clothes. I'm gonna follow your lead and try line drying them.
Toss your towels in the dryer for about 5-10 minutes and I promise they'll be soft not stiff

SLIPPERS
It's the opposite for me, I use hard soles so I can wear them on my balcony without them getting too dirty 🙂
Load More Replies...It is so worth getting good quality slippers. I use LLBean clogs as slippers. Expensive to start but they last for years.
I never go anywhere much so I live in mine. Swap the pairs once a week for airing. Used to buy washable liners but my cheap brand has gone walkies. 🤷
Sherpa lined bed sock, have grippy things on the bottom...warmer than slippers comfy for sitting, and no slip.
Really good food, not expensive either. Today I'm cooking mahi mahi over cheesy grits with asparagus . Less than $4 a serving. Everything was bought on sale. Last week was Mongolian pork with ramen noodles. Pork loin on sale for $1.48 a pound, ramen $.39 per packet.
I've just discovered how much fun cooking can be!!
Load More Replies...Where can you get mahi mahi cheap or pork for $1.48 pound? Our pork is minimum double that at Aldi.
I don't buy pork anymore. Not for religious or health reasons, but on moral grounds. Apparantly, a pig's life is worth € 6. That's how much the farmer makes per slaughtered pig. Explains factory farming. Eating less meat is always a good option.
We usually do a big cook up and eat that for like 4 days. It's way easier and cheaper than coming home from work and cooking every night. This week is a Thai green curry.
This requires living in a place where the stores actually sell mahi mahi and such things for cheap.
Pork loin for $1.48 pound?? Oh, I sure wish we could get it for that! We pay more for dog bones here.
There is so much comfort in food. To this day I still miss my grandmas cooking. She taught me so much, the first rule is never waste anything. Second always cook dinner on Saturday for after church on Sunday and lastly how to make store bought taste like homemade. She was amazing
I love when my recipes turn out really well and I feel like a master chef. Not so good on days my cooking is somehow terrible though…
Water bottle
here in japan water bottles cost around 1-5k or smth depending on what kinds ur going to buy. but stainless that keeps everything in the bottle hot or cold last longer
I'll go out on a limb here and posit the OP is suggesting using a bottle to bring water with you on trips, walks, to work, whatever and not suggesting people buy bottled water.
As long as they're reusable ones and not plastic that you toss when empty. It really irks me seeing those anywhere. The absolute height of selfishness to poison the world with frigging plastic water bottles. Buy a vacuum flask and wash it! 😡
I noticed I drink so much more water now that I have my stainless steel water bottle.
Cheap organizational containers- I tend to misplace things a lot, so having my items (office supplies, makeup, food, etc) allocated to different boxes saves me so much time and frustration. Also, it allows me to save space by vertically organizing my desk/cabinets via stacking boxes.
Used/resold books - I’ve gotten some classics for $2-3 at Half Price Books and at other great sales to add to my mini library and preoccupy me. Taking advantage of the library for free books/movies is also a great idea, and the library (or mine, at least) used to have a program where they were selling older books for $0.25-0.50.
Humidifier/diffuser/air purifier - The diffuser I got was from Five Below and had a low capacity, so it could only humidify a very small space, but all you do is put essential oils into the small sponge provided and it makes the room smell amazing. My tiny, drab dorm smelled like roses and was beautified by the changing rainbow light built in, which made my time in there less miserable lol. If you live in a cold, dry midwestern state like me, then a humidifier is a great investment and you can find a pretty good one under $20 on Amazon.
Used books at book sales are so amazing- Flyleaf Books also has an amazing used book section.
The library in the town I used to live in had a "book exchange", books you could take for as long as it took you to read them, then bring back to swap for another one (usually romance novels that nobody wants to admit that they read). I also got a TON of books free cuz I happened to spot them putting them in the dumpster; went back that evening after the library closed (dumpster wasn't emptied for a couple days, but it rained early the next morning), and dug through for a lot of amazing titles and quite a few extremely rare finds (not the $5000 a copy rare, just ones that I had been looking for for a long time that the library said they didn't have)
I realized how dry our air gets when I started using a humidifier when we got COVID (my sinuses were so dried out I thought it was a sinus infection before we got tested). My sourdough starter always developed a layer of dried starter on top overnight. But when I started using the humidifier that quit developing. Made me think about how bad that dry air probably is for my skin and breathing it in can't be healthy either.
In Australia, Brotherhood Books are a great online second hand seller and it's non-for-profit
Thrift Books is another good site. They have books that are being sold by individuals or that have been phased out by libraries. (
Lots of libraries do book sales. When I was still 18/19 I picked up like 6 bags of books (the bags were the paper bags you used to get from grocery stores) and they were $5 each. The bags were stapled shut, so nobody would root through the bags, and while they would have, say, 'Shakespeare' written on it so you had a general idea of what you were getting. The oldest book I got was from 1839 or so, and it made me so happy since the money was going to the library, and I got to reread all of Shakespeare's works, as well as other authors I'd never read before. That was 30 years ago, and now the book sales are in a big room with lots of tables and all of the books out on tables. I hadn't known the library was having a sale until I saw a sign out front, and what I found that day was a bunch of paper bags of books outside, warm early summer, all underneath giant deciduous trees with these beautiful sun-dappled shadows on a sidewalk outside, low humidity and the sky was so blue. Love. 😊
I find it humorous how coffee isn't on the list. Does this mean y'all drink it and know it's bad or not it is a good thing at all? Or that someone out there thinks it's expensive?
If you ever visit the Belgian Ardens, plan a trip to Redu, the bookvillage... The website sadly is only in French and Dutch (as these are two or our three official languages - German being the third) https://www.redu-villagedulivre.be/fr/
Earplugs - they help with sleep, relaxation, focus. It might take a few tries to find a pair that is comfy for you.
I bought my sister Loop Experience earplugs because she has sensory issues related to autoimmune disorders. They dampen the sound but don't completely block it; they've seemed to help. I know Loop has other levels of sound blocking, too.
I've got a multi pack of the foam, squidy ones that expand once they're in your ear. They come separately packed in pairs and can easily be washed. Couldn't be without mine now so I sleep better than I used to. They can also help as a moron blocker when needed so win win 😁
My husband snores like a freight train and earplugs help... until all I can hear is my own heartbeat and it gets louder and louder and I end up going to sleep in the guest room
At my job I have a jar of ear plugs for when noisy machinery is running. I call them "Ear candy", and they save me a lot of mental energy AND protects my hearing.
Puzzles. I exchange with neighbors and friends so don't buy many. Everyone in my house gravitates to the puzzle - we put on music, we drink tea or a glass of wine, we chat. It's a zen thing.
Aww :) my parents do this together, and when they’re done they glue and frame it. Pretty cute.
Squeegee. Squeegee your shower walls after you shower. Cuts down on mildew significantly.
Going to Goodwill, putting on headphones and browsing for treasures for an hour. I always spend less than $40 bucks but get a dopamine hit like a major shopping spree!!!
That sounds like fun. In Germany, you might want to try Diakonieläden.
Rainx windshield wash fluid. The difference driving in rain is night and day. For only a few dollars.
This changed my life. No more panic attacks because it was raining and I was driving.

Load More Replies...Got the 'regular (?) Rain-X and put it on a friend's car a million years ago. We drove home (about 5 hours) through a storm system and going the speed limit made the rain just blow back off of the windshield, it was actually better than what the wipers were doing! We were both so impressed, I've gotten Rain-X ever since and that was almost 30 years ago!
Using the 3D printer at the library. All it costs is the cost of the materials (usually less than $5 per piece). I make shelves, [lithographs](https://all3dp.com/2/how-to-3d-print-your-own-lithophane/) from photos, hooks and mounts and all sorts of gadgets, gears… I even fixed a pair of our fav scissors when they broke!

Fans. When the house is hot and the outside is cool, a window fan can vent the heat of the house out fast. In winter the fan and move warm afternoon air in.
We got a window unit from someone for $50...use it a couple hours late in the day to knock the heat out. My kids live in NC (USA) have the thermostat at 72..freezing!
I live in Charlotte, that's still too warm! We just got two fans for the bedroom, makes it much more bearable.

Generic brand Mr Clean Magic Erasers. Scuff marks on walls, gone. Hard water deposits on glasses, gone. Cleans every surface in my kitchen, gets label residue off stuff, brings outdoor resin chairs back to looking like new. I’m in love with these cleaning miracles.

Load More Replies...Am I the only one who thinks these suck? Have tried multiple times, really f*****g scrubbing hard, and does not fully cleab
That's not a good idea at all. Magic Eraser is somewhat abrasive and will wreck the surface if a whiteboard making it impossible to clean in the future. If a soft eraser won't clean it, then some isopropanol on a soft cloth will take care of it.

Also saves on temptation shopping. If the kids don't see the candy bar they can't twist your arm into buying it.
My grocery store gives me 1 point for every $1 I spend. Free grocery delivery is 200 points. Once I had 200 points for my first free delivery, I just made sure to do once-a-month big shops where I spent at least $200, so I earned enough points to make the next delivery free too. Self-perpetuating freebies :)
Magnesium
Not that cheap, but I agree. I now take my daily tablet in the morning and a dissolvable dose if needed at night. Makes my restless leg syndrome much more manageable.
Not cheap, but far cheaper than the pain of muscle cramps and horrendous migraines.
Load More Replies...Many people are deficient in magnesium - partly due to diet and largely due to modern intensive farming methods - but it is essential for regulating our nervous system. As the above poster said, it helps with muscle twitches and cramps but also helps your sleep cycle and is useful for anxiety.
Load More Replies...A whiteboard. It's hung right inside my front door and great for making to-do lists and leaving notes for my housemate when we're working opposite shifts.
I use my fridge as a whiteboard :) that’s where my grocery list is, and I have a dry-erase pen glued to a magnet. Most modern fridges can be written on with dry-erase marker! (Edit: in case someone messes up and gets mad at me - rubbing alcohol will remove any unwanted marker 😊)
Dude’s legitimately asking for product recommendations and everybody here is like “A nice weekend spent with friends at home costs you nothing,” or “Not doing crack cocaine is free and can save tons of money by not having to go to expensive rehab.”
'Dude’s legitimately asking for product recommendations and everybody here is like' Would someone translate that into English?
It is English, reading comprehension is not the responsibility of the writer.

Homemade sugar scrub on the cheap cheap - swipe a sugar packet or two from a coffee shop/restaurant/gas station/work, then mix with your usual facial cleanser. OR cleanse your face first then mix with an oil of your preference - I like grape seed because it’s cheap and I can cook with it. Bonus points - use turbinado or fine sugar, as sugar grains are kind of large and can cause micro tears in your skin.
Protein pack hair mask - mix one egg and a 1/4 cup mayo together, spread on damp washed hair and stick a plastic bag on top for about 30 mins before rinsing.

Bonus points for adding labels to help me keep it really organized and not mixed up.
I’ve bought a few plastic jugs with screw tops (1L-2L), I make tea in my French press then keep it chilled in the fridge in the jugs. Homemade iced tea for the cost of a few bags per jug. I’ve been drinking soooooo much iced tea, all sorts of different teas.

The scrubber with a handle you can fill with soap & replace the brush pad is easily one of the most useful things I own, it's about $2 or $3.
I leave one of these in my shower :) once a week, while I’m waiting 1-2 mins for my hair conditioner to sink in, I use it to give the walls and shelves a quick scrub. Keeps my shower super clean (I also scrub the bath tub before every bath so the whole setup is always clean even if the rest of my bathroom isn’t)
We use a bowl already in the sink, or what ever will hold enough water/soap to wash.
I found those to be worse. I had to fill mine up every 2 days or so. I think you would need a good one so it's doesn't leak out.
There are these little rubber things that go around a dog’s leash that can then hold your full dog poop bag, allowing you to pick up the poop without having to carry the bag the whole time. I highly recommend them for dog owners.
I have a hip purse (attaches at the waist and the thigh to stay in your hip) for walking the dogs. One of the front pockets is designated for full bags so I don't have to carry them around in my hand. Also, I used a training leash (which has two loops) to make a diy version of those belt leashes for my 3 bigger dogs. Gotta stop to untangle periodically, but much nicer than holding the leashes in my hands. (Looping the clip through the second loop keeps the leash from completely cinching around your waist.
Try searching “dog poop holder” or “dog poop caddy” :)

I spent the first 22 years of my life as a driving person scraping ice off by hand or burning up all my gas waiting for the window to defrost. One day we were going somewhere and my husband pulled out this magic spray elixir that melted the ice instantly. I was completely blown away. About $6. We only need it a couple times per year, but man is it worth it.
It's essentially 2 parts alcohol to 1 part water, with a few drops of washing up liquid (dish detergent).

Ugh, I don't like these things. We're shrinking phones and making them fit better into pockets, bags then you want to add one of those things to it.
they shrink down and still fit into pockets pretty well
Load More Replies...Something you stick at the back of you phone and it extends so you can have a better grip while holding it and also have it stand horizontally on a table. It takes a bit of space but it's collapsible and if you get them from the popsocket brand (idk about the knockoffs) the expandable part is removable (which is useful when using a selfie stick or pretty much anything with a phone clamp) and you can also change them to switch styles or replace a damaged one without having to remove the sticker part.

Training your cat to use the toilet. I have not bought litter in over a decade. The only upfront cost was a city kitty training kit.
I bet training them to lift and lower the lid was the hardest part ;-)
It's getting the cat to flush that's the sticking point for most people.
Load More Replies...Ermm...I think if I tried to get my Toffee to use the loo, I'd probably spend more on cat therapy in a year than I would on kitty litter in a decade! Wonder how he would flush??

Load More Replies...Those little brillo pads with soap from dollar tree are golden. Nothing more irritating than a pan soaking for 3 days clogging up real estate in my kitchen. Just scrub whatever the fam burned in it off and toss in the cupboard. I have a hallway style kitchen & I find I avoid cooking if it's dirty or cluttered.
OTOH instead of brillo, just sprinkle some baking soda and dish soap onto the stubborn spots after most of the food has been rinsed out. After 10-20 minutes it should be pretty easy to get most "burnt on" stuff off.
I spray it with Easy Off Oven Cleaner, let it sit it a bit, and then the crusty blackened burnt whatever slides off with a wash.
Salt
Well, I'll add from my experience since there's 0 context: seasoning in cooking (obvs), cleaning (add to baking soda & vinegar for an awesome clean), body scrub, icy stairs or walkways, weed killer, tequila shots, salt in the wounds of enemies, etc.

Something that didn't cost much but improved my quality of life; empty gel capsules and a pill splitter. It's healthier for me to do a half a pill, but the pills themselves were uncoated, and LOVE to stick in your throat, 5x worse when split. So by putting the halves in a capsule, it allows me to swallow them easily without choking. Plus, the taste is unpleasant, so this helps with that as well.
